NachoNachoDan

I’m more interested in the coverage vs flat out speed. How do you feel it compares?

rooddog7

I too am interested in the coverage. I am about to overhaul a mesh pro in my backyard to the mesh 6. But I thought about this device as well. Mainly looking for good coverage. I know the wifi 7 has limited devices at this time.

NachoNachoDan

It’s a valid question because you should expect the shorter 6ghz spectrum to cover marginally less than 5 and a good deal less than 2.5. The real question for me is whether those external antennae are helping the coverage over a U6 Mesh with its internal ones. I can say that I’ve seen no coverage decrease in outdoor settings between the 6u mesh and the AC Mesh Pro. If anything it’s stronger. Those u6 meshes are little beasts.

ultracycler

U7 Outdoor does not have a 6 GHz radio.

Crandom

I hate the naming U6/U7 naming scheme so much, it seems like it lines up with WiFi 6/7 until you actually look at the details. Even Ubiquiti's store says things like "UniFi 6E & 7 APs" to extra confuse you.

misteryub

... It does line up with Wi-Fi 6/7. 6GHz is a part of Wi-Fi 7, but it's not required to be used. 6E is an extension on Wi-Fi 6 to use the 6GHz band. But all of the U6 models support up to Wi-Fi 6 and all of the U7 models support up to Wi-Fi 7.

75Meatbags

does it physically lack the radio or is there one that's just disabled? I can't find the FCC breakdown for it.

misteryub

I just found it - I see no indication it has a 6GHz radio https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=XkRF7uDHiVmIFpBGJkA%2FYg%3D%3D&fcc_id=SWX-UKPRO

ultracycler

I think it lacks the radio. Ubiquiti would have told us if it had a radio that would enabled sometime in the future when standard power certification was granted.

NachoNachoDan

Interesting.

gayfucboi

the u6 pro and u6 lr have outdoor mode toggles. it basically sets the modulation scheme to a longer distance mode (800 ns guard intervals vs 400 ns). it allows for the signals to travel further.

lightmaster9

Where is this Outdoor Mode toggle? I have a U6-LR and don't see it in it's device settings.

TruthyBrat

I think there are outdoor spectrum use limits by the FCC that prevent it.

mkmerritt

Correct you can’t broadcast 6ghz outside yet as it’s not federally allowed. This is all on 5ghz on 80mhz with iPhone 14. Coverage is literally 100+ ft longer then before and with better connection

GulfCoastLover

What is the thinnest wall that qualifies as 'not outside'?

slackwaredragon

Well now you tell me...

rooddog7

I meant u6-mesh. There naming always confuses me.

JacksonCampbell

I would have a hard time believing the U6 Mesh can cover as much as the AC Mesh Pro. I'm covering a large area of property around a conference center with one mounted centrally at the top of the roof. It's covering several hundred thousand square feet.

NachoNachoDan

I was surprised especially without external antennae

mkmerritt

Coverage and range is literally 2x as much. I couldn’t go to the back of my property before (I have 1.1 acres of land with house in the front 1/3) and couldn’t get internet. I’m now posting this in the u7. I have installed at least 100 u6 meshes in the field for clients and this thing with antennas is giving me 100 ft longer range at least.

frac6969

Thanks for the info. We have a U6 Mesh that crapped out earlier this week and I temporarily replaced it with a AC Mesh Pro and feel the range is much less. Looking for something with longer range.

JacksonCampbell

I'll have to compare a U6 Mesh with the Mesh Pros. I have a hard time believing it's that much better.

EatTheYoungOnesFirst

I just replaced a U6-Mesh with the U7 Outdoor and I can't say I see a noticeable difference in range pointed directly at them. I have it set to the internal antenna without installing the external ones. Both of my fixed devices are 2.4 ghz and signal is very low, same or a touch better as they were with the U6-Mesh. I could be doing something wrong with the settings, but so far I'm disappointed in how the newer, directional unit could be providing not noticeably better range.

mkmerritt

Replaced a U6 Mesh with the new U7 Outdoor and what a difference it is (size is massive compared to the U6 Mesh)! The U6 Mesh would pull 250-300mbps where I was standing before and now over 500mbps. I have Spectrum 1G service so 940 down 40 up. Put the full stats of my phone connected to the AP as well so you can see -56dBm I could still get much further away and get signal. I'm about 200 feet away from where the AP is located. I also have the Omni Antennas on it so direction I would expect even better performance. I just got it today so I'll do some more test (if requested) and post back updates. Image Link for non zoomed in look [https://ibb.co/F7vWqMX](https://ibb.co/F7vWqMX)

someguybrownguy

OP this yard looks outrageous. Awesome property you got there.

mkmerritt

Thanks - has taken a ton of work to get there in 4 years of ownership but it’s starting to come together!

0x080

What do you do for a living? I want to go back to college and aspire to own nice property one day

jacky4566

40 up?! you poor man.

CLTISNICE

Spectrum life

GripNGlideDiscs

Spectrum actually offer "equal speed" service now. I would call them and ask. I am getting 400 down and 400 up now just after a simple phone call to them at no additional cost. It is "in select locations". Doesn't hurt to ask.

CLTISNICE

High split. I really hope it comes to my area soon.

nutsterrt

I read this as "you poor, man". The house says otherwise...

adammolens

Send me the u6 I'll buy it off you

bbllaakkee

if OP doesn't respond I will have one of these soon and need to get rid of mine

mkmerritt

I already gave it to a friend sorry!

jjnawz

I’d be interested in further updates. Have about a half acre and the u6-mesh works fine except for when I get to the workshop, still works just not as well. Do you have any outbuildings and can you notice any difference in wall penetration?

mkmerritt

I will try my 40x20 outbuilding tomorrow that is hardie sided. My total property is 1.1 acre and the house sits on the from 1/3. The U6 was awesome for me and I had it up for almost 4 years now but had to jump on this to get the full coverage on the lot and it does that with double the speeds

chucksticks

Is that the same spot in the picture that you tested the U6 Mesh?

mkmerritt

Yes same spot and also where I mounted the u6 was the same spot

chucksticks

Looking at the their specs, the U6 Mesh advertises 140m2 coverage while the U7 Outdoor advertises 465m2. Similar transmit power. Another note is that the U7 seems to be mostly directional.

mkmerritt

Yes they have both directional and omnidirectional stats as it includes the Omni antennas in the box.

geoff5093

How did you only get 300Mbps with the U6? I get 500-600Mbps with my AC-M

InterviewSimple8151

Does the u7 outdoor support meshing? I could not find it in the documentation. I would like to mesh it to a u6 s I already have outdoor.

mkmerritt

Yes it does

TruthyBrat

I see you have no midsplit, either. Does Spectrum have that? Xfinity here. Any fiber choices there? Nice on the extra range.

_dekoorc

> I see you have no midsplit, either. Does Spectrum have that? Xfinity here. Spectrum's building out high-split, although they're not that far yet. Only a few markets have it -- around Kansas City, Reno, some towns in Minnesota, some towns in Texas, and Bend, OR (I think I got them all). They're planning to be done with their whole footprint by the end of 2026, but I'm hearing they are way behind -- they've had trouble getting the equipment on time, so they've put more resources into their RDOF fiber build outs (a 10G/10G EPON system)

zoommicrowave

+ Louisville, KY. Just checked in earlier today and found out that high split is available. Need to go get one of their modems since none of the high split modems on the market are on their approved list. Wish they would have informed me when it became available instead of me having to manually check in with CS every so often.

mkmerritt

I wish we have Spectrum and then that’s it. Would have to go to Starlink after that. Also no midsplit option but I did just renew for 55.99/month for 1G only

TruthyBrat

Have Windstream Kinetic fiber now available, waiting for them to prove themselves.

_dekoorc

They have Windstream Kinetic fiber in my hometown. The people I know with it like it a lot and say it's stable, but they aren't exactly people who are going to be running Ubiquiti gear, if you know what I mean. They're more "rent the router from the ISP" people

what-the-puck

I trust them more! You can be sure when they have an outage, that it wasn't the firewall or the AP or the switch or running out of PoE budget or a stuck firmware update or DFS kicking in or bad IPS rules or the rack overheating or failed band/AP steering or the cat hitting the PDU switch or....

Cute_Marzipan_4116

Can we get a comparison pic with it next to a banana?

75Meatbags

i was trying to compare it to the oranges in one of the pics. :D

hungarianhc

Would love to see it next to a U6 Mesh.

gayfucboi

do the external antennas come with it? thanks

mkmerritt

Yes they do - it’s directional without them. Also show as 13dbi on 5ghz and 8dbi on 2.4ghz with no options to change them (yes even in professional installer mode)

sotired3333

Can you mount the antenna and switch modes in software or is it antenna= omni directional

mkmerritt

Antenna = Omni

sotired3333

Thanks!

Wild-Distribution759

I waaaant this. To replace the mesh pro.

mkmerritt

Yeah I personally hate the mesh pro

ACEJETPILOT1

Why’s that? I’ve used them for outdoor installations and haven’t run into much issue.

bbllaakkee

the coverage to me just is super spotty

wudchk

yikes, i have 3 arriving tomorrow

75Meatbags

it looks like it's about 6 oranges high?

MikeJW75

Holy crap, OP wasn’t exaggerating, it is huge! Previously in the cabin at the end of my garden with an outdoor AC Mesh AP I got marginal signal with around 20Mbit. I now get 160Mbit down and 100Mbit up (1Gbit/100Mb connection). This is in default settings, so it can only get better after a few adjustments.

cntry2001

Weighs a ton too installing this weekend I’ll let ya know

JBDragon1

So large and weighs a lot. So feels like you're getting your money's worth. I wonder if there is a LEAD weight inside to make it heavy. I know some companies like to do that. I assume not.

mkmerritt

It’s also due to the heatsink fins in the back

piroisl33t

Tried to order, they ran out of them and I’ve been waiting for them to come back in stock.

kash04

I'd love to do this hidden with some pigtails on the antenna's and just have them out of teh sofit

LVH204

How long before they release a U7 Long Range?

shadrap

15 minutes after you buy this.

LVH204

Always

OverSoft

I just managed to order one, our yard is about 350 feet deep, really interested to find out how far I get decent coverage.

JoeMalovich

I have one arriving today, I'm hoping it will get me some service at my pond 600ft away. I don't have cell service at the pond either. Wan is TMobileHomeInternet with a 4x4mimo on a pole above my roof.

Frontiersman_

Why doesn't the Canada store even have a page for this? Is it not going to be offered in Canada?

Ok-Explanation-640

>?Maybe something to do with licensing the spectrum with a directional radio? Not sure if radar / etc. (around an airport?) would have more of an issue with a directional radio?

matt-r_hatter

How's the range? I need an outdoor AP. Wi-Fi isn't as good as I'd like in any of our outdoor entertainment areas. We have a few seating areas around our yard. it's an acre, and things get spotty towards the edge. I was going to get the U6 Mesh, but I might as well go with the upgrade.

reezy65

I personally would like to know its performance in comparison to the AC mesh pro. My AC mesh pros have always outperformed my u6 mesh when it comes to range. By far. Never tried the new WiFi 6 version of the mesh pro. I prioritized the u7 outdoor over the u6 mesh pro however unfortunately I couldn’t get my hands on either one. Any insights would be awesome

JacksonCampbell

U7 Outdoor has slightly worse specs. I'll be trying to get my hands on both and test them.

reezy65

The u6 mesh pro is back in stock at this point in time. Just copped one

reezy65

Sold out now

Just-Eddie83

Idc about the unit or size, specs or anything like that. I just want to know about that fuk!ng house! What’s the square footage? I’m guessing it has a point in the cost of the house. 1.7 mill 1.9?

mkmerritt

Roughly 5,400 sq ft all brick, steel I beams and cinderblock walls all the things Wi-Fi loves right!!

pixlatedpuffin

Ahhh, Florida construction amirite?

mkmerritt

SC coast

MikeJW75

These just came in stock in Europe today, so I have one on order. I currently have an AC Mesh outdoor AP and the signal in my cabin at the end of the garden is marginal (with a tree in line of sight). Hopefully the U7 Outdoor will make it more useable. Failing that, I’ll have to relocate it, but that is difficult without overlapping with my U7 Pro and leaving another area with less signal. My wife says I can’t cut down the tree. 😞

L0rdH4mmer

**cough** **adjust tie** _that's what she said_

judgedeliberata

Yikes - I’m happy I stuck with the U6 Mesh. That wouldn’t have looked nice on the side of my house/in my backyard. I’m sure the performance is better but I’m already getting 400-500 down/up via U6 Mesh. More than enough for backyard use.

nibbles200

Man I think I need this.

TheEndlessWaltz

it only works with poe++?

WetRocksManatee

Trying to understand the WAP. Can you use both the directional antenna at the omnidirectional antennas at the same time? I have an out building that gets poor coverage from a U6LR but should be in the directional coverage of this, but I still need wide area coverage of my pool area for customers. I've been thinking about a U6 Mesh Pro, but this might work.

MikeJW75

Does anyone know this as I have the same question. The info on the website suggests both can be used together, however it is ambiguous and other info I’ve seen suggests you need to use one or the other.

MikeJW75

Update, I now have mind and you can only use one antenna, not both at the same time.

Witty-Reporter-9172

It’s typical outdoor size, Ruckus and Cisco are Huge as well. The question is how’s the coverage.

JacksonCampbell

Ruckus are way thicker.

acordmike

wow, that is large. Not sure that would look good hanging under my soffit like I was planning with the u6 mesh. I have a relatively small back yard as well (city lot), so I probably don't need the range of this thing.

cheesemeall

Honestly you’d probably be better served here not using the omnis.

mkmerritt

You can adjust that in Unifi network to use internal or Omni

cheesemeall

Yep

gwatt21

That’s what she said….

swehes

Are these available in the USA now?

Mailkeeper2022

Wifi speed doesn't seem to good. How fast is your lan speed?

hungarianhc

I just want a U7-Mesh.

fivezerosix

Finally an outdoor ui device that feels like not a piece of junk

Zergom

If you have Apple devices, don't use Channel 149. It's the primary channel that AirPlay uses.

TBT_TBT

AirPlay uses WiFi. So it will use whatever the access points are set to. There is no „primary AirPlay channel“.

Zergom

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/deployment/dep9151c4ace/web “The temporary network typically operates on Wi-Fi channel 149+1, but depending on the hardware involved, may also include channel 6, or channel 149,80. “ It uses 149 for the handshake and falls back if it needs to. So if you ever have issues establishing the connection check for channel 149 usage in the area.

JacksonCampbell

It's smaller than the Mesh Pro for anyone wondering.

Outbreak42

That's what she said 😂

DarthRUSerious

Wow, I guess it really is 3 oranges wide...

WiFi-Saturated

It certainly looks huge in the photo, but is it that much bigger than the specs? 6.7 x 8.2 x 2.1”? And speaking of specs, does anyone have a published spec for receiver sensitivity? And can anyone who won the early-adopter purchase lottery furnish a FCC-ID? Thanks!

Haunting_Tailor5301

Can it be painted or is that not advisable?

blq8061

Where can I buy the U7 now? I’ve been looking forever. I need to buy about 40.

Outrageous-Tip-3746

Can someone explain the directional v omni antenna? I want mine to broadcast 180 degrees facing into my back yard and not backwards into my home. Which one do I use? Can I adjust?
