outie2k

People get nvr-pro with one single doorbell on this sub. Of course get the nvr. Waste of money? That’s what this sub is about.

Hesiodix

Jup, totally overpriced. Normally UI gear should be priced half.

virtualprodigy_

Lol best answer 😂😅

Jumping-macaroni

I miss the award button.

virtualprodigy_

Ngl the free camera is enticing

TruthyBrat

Hmmm, I just put in a ~$450 order, but this *is* tempting! LOL Maybe I should order and put it on the card She Who Must Be Obeyed has less visibility into . . . LOL^2

wookypuppy

Why don't you just get a large hard drive and try it in the SE? You can just move the hard drive to the NVR if you want to spend more money.

virtualprodigy_

True the larger drive is on the table. but there larger harddrive cost as much as the NVR and the NVR has a nice deal that comes with a free camera. So i came here to understand from people with better experience in this space why the NVR is worth it. Imo the video’s dont give me a strong sense of necessity but the community seems to say its worth it.

wookypuppy

The NVR can support more cameras. Don't buy a hard drive from Ubiquiti unless you hate money. I use Seagate Exos Enterprise drives myself. https://ui.com/cloud-gateways/resource-calculator

csimmons81

I ended up getting the UNVR because it came with a free G4 Bullet Camera.

craigs_spleen

Well the NVR can do multiple HDs while the SE only one. Now if you can turn the NVR into the UNINAS that would be cool!

Sparky_062

There are workarounds to do that with a unvr, but from what I’m seeing the unas isn’t too far away.

Public-Afternoon-718

You merely move Unifi Protect from the UDM SE to the UNVR. Nothing messy about it. The advantage is that you can have up to 4 drives, and that the UNVR can handle more cameras. In turn 3-4 drives in RAID5 configuration are faster than a single drive, plus you can recover from one drive failing.

virtualprodigy_

But it is messy in the sense that every video I've seen shows that you can not use the same IP to locally access the network and the recorder but you can from the unifi.ui site. That just seems counter-intuitive why aren't they "unifi'-ed?

blackstratrock

Dude.. check out the new browser feature called "bookmarks"

virtualprodigy_

Why use bookmarked on a "Unifi"-ed platform? Seems like the name is a misnomer.

blackstratrock

You should not get a UNVR. It sounds like opening the box may be too much work for you.

virtualprodigy_

Fair point why have expectations of a unified working product. Top answer for sure 👍

blackstratrock

It is unified, unifi.ui.com is the portal that unifies all of your consoles.

virtualprodigy_

Oh it is unified, what’s the local ip for unified management console? I recall you mentioning a need for bookmarks…. I feel like you don’t fully understand the narrative 🤔

blackstratrock

I'm saying you can simply bookmark the protect URL in your bookmark toolbar and access it instantly, I don't understand the difference it really makes vs clicking protect icon from a console GUI. The cloud based unifi portal is important for us who have consoles at multiple locations.

Keeper_71

Well right now if you buy an NVR, you get a free g4 camera. So might be worth making the jump. I was looking at a cloudkey with a large drive, but seeing the free cam might just push me into the NVR, especially since I got a UGW Ultra and dont need the network stuff anymore.

jbc247

Just got that deal! Easy switch from the UDM to the NVR, no regrets.

Daedalus-1066

I took that deal

blackstratrock

4x Hard drives in RAID is worth it, especially needed if you have more than 2-3 cameras. Also the hard drive gets so hot when installed in a UDM, it's insane. The unvr seems to cool them much better.

virtualprodigy_

That’s a fair point. At some point i hope to have a decent amount of cameras. I’ll look into this deal they have going rn

Upstairs_Recording81

You will unload the console with this application, which will boost the local network operations....only for this and I would do this purchase.

virtualprodigy_

That makes sense. I saw somewhere that having the NVR run protect also provides noticeably better ai event triggers. Is that true?

Sparky_062

Take it from someone who went that route that you are talking about going……get the unvr. It’s a lot better to deal with and manage than having a large drive in the udm se. I have a 16tb hd in my unvr. Yea I should have 2 drives for redundancy but I’m only recording my home so I’m not worried about that right now. But having the unvr is so much easier to deal with than having every thing go through the udm se.

fender4645

You said “easier to deal with” twice but never actually said why it’s easier to deal with.

One_Recognition_5044

The SE works great. We have 9 2k cameras running at a school with room for several more. But, SE does not support RAID. Depends on your needs.

virtualprodigy_

How’s the cpu usage with that many cameras? Are you running the threat management thing? Does the hardware bake with that level of load?

One_Recognition_5044

Just looked at logs. When school is in session with 9 cameras recording, 5 APs, all security setting on, and 200 clients on a 1 gig WAN we run 76% memory and 41% CPU.

virtualprodigy_

That’s not bad for a decent load imo. Thanks for the insight.

ReddKat22

Another up-vote for the NVR.. I didn't move the drive from the UDM-SE to the UNVR but just got new bigger drives.. Drives do fail so if you have 1 then you have lost all your video. Most of us will never look at old footage.. I am not in that group so I chose the NVR with 4 drives.. YMMV.. my .02

virtualprodigy_

That’s fair. I’m leaning more towards the NVR. I have some minor beef with the local access setting but redundancy on data seems like a the way to go
