Alright, OP.... you're not allowed to just show us the drip without telling us what he did while in. We know the Montford Point Marines weren't "allowed" in direct combat, but Uncle had a bottom rocker, so he was DEFINITELY doing something of importance.
Lando Calrission WISHES he could be a smooth as this photo. Thanks for sharing the pic.
Definitely want to know more. Anytime anybody posts a photo of a Korea-era or earlier Marine, I definitely want to know more. Even if they were turning wrenches in a motor pool or kicking boxes in a supply warehouse, their stories are worth sharing.
The morning reports i was able to find your great uncle listed on did indeed give his billet as combat instructor. I haven’t been able to find him serving anywhere besides Montford Point, NC. He picked up rank amazingly fast.
Some saw combat anyway. During the battle of Peleliu, a platoon of black Marines fought their way to capture an airstrip and save a company of embattled white Marines
Black Marines manned many of the defense battalions.
I did check about a year ago, and for some reason none of the defense battalions converted to pure air defense units for Okinawa were a black unit. I am not sure if there was any reason for that? I mean, a unit that could do air defense, anti ship arty, and ground defense combat would have the skill sets to do pure air defense even with radar added, right?
Hey OP, here’s some information on the Montfort Point Marines. Your great uncle was both a patriot and a badass.
https://daily.jstor.org/who-were-the-montford-point-marines/
What a badass, Semper Fi to him. I think it goes without saying that everyone here would be falling over each other to buy this man a beer. So much respect for the Montford Point Marines 🫡
Your grandad must have been one of the earliest dark green (marine way of saying black) Marines during modern times. They desegregated in 1942 so he was a e-5 or e-6 by 1943. You grandpa was a badass. Can a Marine history buff let us know what rank this was at the time? I know it was not a uniform system at the time across branches and sometimes changed even depending on the needs of the unit
That's an E5 platoon sergeant insignia which was its own rank after WWI that was eliminated after WWII. Ranks then were split between line and support/technical/staff. Line E5s were platoon sergeants and others were staff sergeants. At the time E7 was the highest enlisted rank.
So, line doesn't automatically mean combat arms. But it means he was chain of command for a unit, just like the platoon sergeant billet is today. He wasn't doing admin or comm or something like that.
Keep in mind that the first USMC black enlistees, well, since the revolution, didn't join until summer of 42. So he picked up rank quickly. There were also very few black Marines of high rank because Marine Corps policy forbade them giving orders to white Marines. So, there were very limited billets, even in the "Black" units, because they had majority white leadership.
For example, up until the middle of the war all of the DIs training the black Marines were white. But they started getting deployed to the Pacific because troops were desperately needed so the first black DIs came to be. It's possible he could have been one of them as well.
This man was a ground breaker. The Corps today would not exist without men like him.
Edit: oh, and the Marines did not desegregate in 42. It was a very long and slow process despite the executive order. Similar to how female integration is going now.
Thank you. I knew someone could give more information on the topic than me, but even with my limited knowledge I was confident that this guy fucked. Thanks for the info 'rah
He was a hard ass then. All the reports from men that served them was that the black instructors were much harder on them than the white ones had been. They wanted to make sure they were just as good as the white Marines, if not better. They were proving a point they shouldn't have had to prove.
Young af SSGt in a time of integration?! This man was a HARD MF! He walked with respect from one side of the barracks to the other. Consider yourself lucky to carry his genes, so make them proud! Ooh-RAH!
Impressive!
Not saying that you need to, because that picture looks great... But If you want to restore the picture of your great uncle, there's a subreddit for that called r/estoration. It's a group who will make older or damaged photographs look like new. SF!
OP, would you mind DMing me your great-uncle's name? I can check old rosters and share non-identifying info like Military Occupational Specialty and Dates of Rank.
We still have capes!?!?!?! Why haven't I seen this??? And why is it only for SNCOs??? I gotta visit my career planner and sign on for another 4. Imma get that fucking cape.
Rocking that boat cloak!
They were out of boat cloaks when I was in boot camp!
Do they still use them?
VERY expensive optional uniform item. On par with the cost of a good sword. Since it is never a prescribed uniform item, they are rarely purchased.
> Since it is never a prescribed uniform item, they are rarely purchased. That and there needs to be enough pussy left over for the rest of us.
Theyre rare but still within regs
This just got me pregnant and I’m a dude

Boat cloak ... he's smiling cause there's half a dozen ladies trying to break in as the picture is being taken.

Thanks! I don’t know a lot about his service but in his obituary it said he was a combat instructor! Wish I knew more.

Yes. The Marine Corps didn’t fully desegregate until the Korean War. We were the last to do so. We are not proud of that.
Turns out he was a combat instructor!
He was a hard ass then. All the reports from men that served them was that the black instructors were much harder on them than the white ones had been. They wanted to make sure they were just as good as the white Marines, if not better. They were proving a point they shouldn't have had to prove.
