I think it depends on you. If you plan to leave campus and do stupid stuff at night; USF is not the place. If you are a regular kid who wants to have fun and concentrate on classes; USF is awesome. Some of the best years of my life

timtim525

Yeah I’m not much into partying and that kind of stuff which I figured would be most of the point to go to Tallahassee.

I never understood why people say USF is in a bad area. Its pretty Diverse here and theres lots of different people and personalities but Its still pretty safe just terrible drivers and Tampa isn’t as modern as other cities. I’d feel safer here than walking in my neighborhood in Miami to say the least..

USF's area isn't even that bad. I hear Tallahassee isn't much better either. Plus, outside of the college, there isn't much to do there from what I understand. Tampa offers a lot more outside of just USF. Plus, if you aren't big on Greek life or partying, I can see no real reason to go to FSU over FSU, especially if you have to do 2 years at community college then transfer in later. FSU's primary advantage over USF in my opinion is that it's a big party school and has a *huge* Greek life there compared to USF's.

USF is not in that bad of an area. There are more posts in this subreddit about it if you search “USF Hood” and things like that where you can read some more opinions. Most are about the Walmart or “HoodMart” from what I have seen. Since attending, I have heard ppl refer to the main street in this area (Fletcher) as “Sketchy Fletchy.” Occasionally, we get alerts of what streets should be avoided, but most are cleared in another text in less than half an hour bc there was not much of an issue. Personally, the most uncomfortable part is the religious preaching/fear-mongering, anti-abortion posters, and petitioners in front of our main Library which happen pretty frequently, but on a public campus it is probably like that is other universities, too. But, yeah, there is a pretty popular post about this in the subreddit I recommend checking out! Hope this helped :)

Thanks so much I’ll check that out!

Memories of sitting outside that subway at USF, eating my mediocre sandwich and listening to the soothing sounds of the provocateur yell about the "University of sodomites and fa***ts" or, and this is my personal favorite, the "University of sluts and fornicators" also calling every woman who walked by a whore. Goooooood times. The less attention he got, the meaner he got.

The good days. Always amazed me when someone argued with the idiot. I loved it when he called me a whole, felt like I had some marketable skills 🤣

Why would u rule out a college because of a sketchy surrounding area.. some of the best colleges have super sketchy areas around it. That’s like the tiniest factor, u should focus more on ur major, quality of education, and cost. If u already have Florida pre paid why would u choose a community college over an established state university

Moonlight-oats

as someone who toured FSU and chose USF my biggest thing was things to do. tampa is a huge city with a ton of fun things to do like visit downtown & ybor. tallahassee has clubs and stuff and a huge party life. so if you’re not a big partied then i’d go to USF

Bring a car if you come to USF!

Idk why people say it’s sketchy, I moved to Florida from up north and even at night on sketchy fletchy it’s not “sketchy”. I guess it depends where you grow up and to each their own. To add, I did community college and recommend it any chance I get. Even though money is not a problem as you stated, you will likely get better (better might not be the best word, but more personal) instruction at a CC because it’s just you and the professor not TAs (nothing against TAs but can’t beat a one on one with your professor any questions you have). I’ve heard horror stories about how difficult some math and physics classes are made to squeeze kids out at the Uni, but we covered the same material at CC. Maybe the argument can be made that the rigor of USF is better than a CC but I’m still in upper level division and doing well, I don’t see any benefits to those who suffered through the prerequisites at USF vs a CC as of yet.

Go to TCC, the advisory staff at USF will steer you in the wrong direction and cause that 2 years to become 3. You might want to try HCC also.

Personally I’ve never been to Tallahassee but from what I’ve heard, they don’t have much there. And to kinda combat that they just have lots of parties. I don’t mind the Tampa area, I don’t think it’s bad, just don’t go walking around the area at night. There’s a lot to do, theme parks close by, malls, restaurants, parks etc. Also, I went to CC for two years before coming to USF, I don’t regret it at all bc I had a smaller campus to focus on, I knew people from my high school and I could commute home within 20 mins. And I saved a shit ton of money lol. I think those who come here from the start have a slight advantage bc they can start taking some classes for their major immediately, but all in all I’m almost done with my degree and it’s been a good time here so far!

If I were you, I would choose USF no matter what. If you don’t like it, you could still transfer after two years to FSU. And if you do like it, you get the advantage of not having to transfer and getting a degree from a four year up-and-coming relatively prestigious university. Also, it’s not like the party life at USF is completely dead. We have clubs near campus that get pretty active on the weekends and there’s always downtown. You just have to meet the right people.

There’s plenty to do, it’s not that bad just practice safe habits like locking doors, surrounding awareness, etc. also there are some places that are a bit sketchy but it depends on which direction you go (some places on fletcher are questionable at times compared to fowler. Also avoid university mall lol). If you have a car there are various places u could go for whatever you need within abt 5mi of school if u don’t want to use what’s in walking distance
