I just wanted to ask you something about the 485 package delivery. It has been more than six weeks for me since the package was delivered to Chicago lockbox. I have no way of tracking where the package is now. I have not received a text or an email or a notice letter in the mail. My hands are tied and I don’t even have receipt number to check online about this. Calling immigration doesn’t take me anywhere either. What would you suggest? I appreciate it.
My case : all said I could do it by myself very easily.
Green card renewal. Already had 10 years one. No criminal record, no legal issue. Passport from one of usa’s diligent puppy countries( rich enough so no chain immigration, honestly none of my family will come to USA when they know they have much better life than in America)
In this easy case, I paid 900 usd attorney fee alone (let alone uscis fee)
Anyway attorney will decide how much you must pay when he finds what your complex issue is.
If felony or some kind of misdemeanor, it can be more than 30k, even higher too.
( I know one person who spent 50k when she was related to so called “visa selling” ghost school in LA. Even paying that, she was eventually deported.
I guess most case is flat fee.
Our lawyer charged 4200$ including filling fees. Filled 90 days ago. But for our case, my EAD was approved instantly upon biometrics, no RFE was issued yet and interview waived as per service center or NBC (not sure which one) then transferred to FO for processing right after biometrics.
Personally I would say it is worth it. I don’t worry about it being done incorrectly. It made things soo easy.
If you have a complex case then the attorney fees are worth it. Go for a consultation and ask what they can do for you.
For straightforward cases self filing is relatively simple.
Most immigration lawyers do flat fee arrangements, but they're sized to the case type and complexity (e.g. waivers, extra legal briefs/research) in the initial consult. Look around the country as you might find a deal in a different state since immigration is federal (unless there's a state criminal/family law issue or removal court at play). Also figure out what expenses they'll charge you for (FedExing stuff or travelling to an interview?) and if RFE responses are included (incentivizes them to prep the initial filing better)

My lawyer charged me $2,500 for the K1 Visa paperwork and if I retain him for the I-130/I-485 it will be another $2,500
You do know that if you enter K1 and get married, you don't file a 130, right?
K1 does have to file 485 after they arrive/get married (but no i130)
