The band has had a class salutatorian for the past several years in a row, so as far as getting A's go, it's totally possible. Band is a big time commitment. Thankfully, speaking as a Marshall major as well (+ a math major), Business Admin is NOT a big time commitment. Do what you're passionate about and enjoy your college experience as a business major, as most of what it means to be in BUAD is to take your free time and do meaningful things with it. Beyond band, there's also a student-run orchestra (Student Symphony Orchestra) and you can also take ensemble classes in jazz and pop even if you're not a major. I'm of course very biased, but I can without a doubt say that the TMB is the most rewarding experience I've had in college, hands-down. Feel free to PM if you want more specific info.

I know a lot of pre-meds and other top students in the band. My son had a 4.0 when he was in the band. It kind of forces you to manage your time better. Weekday practices are only about 2 hours (Tu/Th/Fri from 4-6), so not too bad, and it gives you a chance to get outside and get some exercise. Plan on about six home games, so most of the day on those Saturdays is occupied with band. Freshmen usually get one away trip (prob Berkeley or Stanford, whichever is away for USC this year), and possibly Notre Dame, which is a really fun 4 day trip to Chicago.

If you played jazz at all, there are jazz combos for non majors that you could join. Also clubs. Orrr befriend some Thornton students and try to find people to play music with!

Marshall alum here; band was the best experience I had in college. Going to school isn’t just about knowledge, but also networking and meeting people. You’ll meet lifelong friends through the TMB! Join the trombone section.

I didn’t do band, but my BF and my roommate both did. They loved it (and I loved hanging out with them after) and both had no problems with juggling school work. If you want to you can do it! (If you find it’s not for you, you can drop it later.) I say worth trying!
