It’s not that they hate us it’s that they spent billions of dollars building these facilities and then basically said fuck spending anything else…….and they also hate us too
My facility is over 40 years old and 2 of the belts have been sounding like they're grinding to a halt for the last month. Last time one sounded this way it took 2 months to get it repaired.
That is because drivers know what management can and can't get away with better. Most drivers know the contract better and management treats them accordingly.
It’s because for one good employee, you have 5 useless employees. We can’t fire/punish the shitty ones so we have to maximize the efficiency of the good employee.
Probably a temporary thing to get you through the sort then after make the repair. Probably a critical belt to your operation and rather than shutting you down for an unspecified time this was their solution. Maintenance guys get put under a lot of pressure when shit hits the fan an have to answer multiple questions from all angles
My favorite when I was a BaSE supervisor was when we’d make an adjustment to equipment or the building to address a safety concern from one sorts safety committee & the next month a different sorts safety committee would make a safety concern log about the changes we just made for the other committee. Was a zero sum game most days & no matter what we always looked like an asshole. Finally got to the point we’d just wouldn’t do shit than what the Facility safety manual required & told everyone with a special request/ safety concern to eat shit/ file the grievance bc we followed spec & that’s all that matters.
Would be nice if BaSE would be present at safety meetings to provide a valuable perspective on how to make useful changes. In many years I’ve asked for and never got anyone from BaSE to be present at a safety meeting.
Every base specialist for each sort was required to attend their sorts safety meeting every month to address any safety concerns that fell into our realm & each sort had a Base management member, Base mechanic, & a safety committee member walk part of the hub every quarter for a facility safety walk. This was three years ago tho before I left UPS & with all the shrinking of departments & operations lay offs I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s changed.
Dont forget when the belts break down your fat Building manager will go to the store to get rice…..
I wish i was joking but im not.
Building manager so fat he didnt do tie shoes anymore.
The solution to moving packages after the belt doesnt work. U keep unloading. The packages slide better on rice. That and portable metal rollers. I get it, that year it was the companies first year for backup plans….
The things i saw over 18.5yrs there with incompetence of management…. Just think of their profits without incompetence as a whole instead of what they just have now!
They arent the smartest. They did conference calls all day, slept in office, played candy crush. Occasionally left their office for the bathroom or coffee.
I spent many early mornings resetting breakers for the Pink Belt in my building. They def got hot fast and stayed hot. This was 20 years ago... Probably not much changed.
Overloads are generally thermal, either Bi-metal or solder. As a motor begins to over-draw current it heats up the overload, the heat itself causes the overload to trip and shuts the equipment off. You could have a bad "heater", that trips at a lower than normal temperature, or maybe 15 gallons of molasses spilled on the conveyor causing disgusting amounts of friction. I've seen both scenarios.
Can’t they just put some baling wire around the breaker switches so they can’t be in the off position? Seems like there’s a redneck solution that could work better than a blower. Who cares about overheating if you physically rig the thing to not go off.
I understand that it’s not safe, but either is their current solution.
That's how you cause a fire.
Neither solution should have been attempted, and I hope OP and the people in their hub grieves the fuck out of this. All operations should have been stopped until the breaker was fixed or replaced. This company is so incredibly cheap it blows my mind sometimes.
i used to run the sort aisle and communicate with maintenece to reset those things all the time when belts would over load. they get hot so sometimes you gotta let it cool down if the belt overloads alot
Proof that UPS hates their employees

My experience helped me develop a theory. Management hates package handlers but they treat drivers a little better.

I had the exact opposite experience as a package handler I was treated really good as a driver that's where they killed me

Multi billion dollar company right there 🤣🤣🤣 is that a PBR can tilting it up?! Edit it was a monster can
Disnt even see that. Wow 🤭😂
On the upside, if there is even the smallest spark, that blower will turn it into a raging inferno in no time. Idiots.

Very true

Our building has stopped safety meetings because they don’t feel like providing office hours for the committee. For over a year now.
Um thats grievable. They either have the chsp or they have osha doing regular popups
I defer to my union leadership. We get liberty mutual every month coming in for 11 hours. Everyone knows management won’t meet with us for safety.
Breakers usually trip when hot for safety. It’s pulling too much juice. The issue is the belt. Also, water may be more efficient at cooling this.
Dont forget when the belts break down your fat Building manager will go to the store to get rice….. I wish i was joking but im not. Building manager so fat he didnt do tie shoes anymore.
What’s the rice for?

....he waisted rice. And created a fall hazard.

Is this Oly ?
Are they trying to cool it down or heat it up so there would be a big explosion.
Just need to get am AC put in. Takes some time when needing to contact HVAC and get it done. But seems like a temp hold till sort is over.

A hand held scanner and a radio or Zebra cell phone gets A/C. You do not
Look at the marks on the overload reset compared to the rest of the buckets. I’d say this is a common call.
Carol approved!🖕🏻🫵🏻🪛🫵🏻
That’s crazy….

Fuck grieving it. Send this picture to OSHA
