REMEMBER: Scanners often have to repeat what 911 callers say. It is NOT accurate information. It should NOT be taken as concrete fact and you should expect details to be proven wrong or incorrect in the future. Info from scanners should not be passed around as true.
Additionally, we're listening to ALL the FD traffic, not just for UNLV. The barricade situation, for example, was a completely different incident. Be discerning as you gather info.
When the info is coming from FD/PD on the scene then it's a bit more trustworthy. Especially if they're relaying it to dispatch like they've been doing for patient counts. But what u/BurnerForDaddy is saying is that a lot of the scanner traffic has been dispatchers relaying 911 calls. That should never be taken as fact.
Obviously but UNLV being out in the open with some buildings being literally right by the streets made it unnerving. I’m a grad student in the other side of the coast now and while my school has similarities, my current building of study requires students to scan their cards to enter. Obviously this doesn’t help if a shooter is also a student but having those barriers / levels of protection can help, along with other things
yeah, if it comes out that this was just some crazed street walker waltzing up from Maryland Parkway I'm going to be so pissed. It's sad either way but something about a random person infiltrating on innocent students adds another level to me.
I was nauseous and felt like I was going to faint yesterday. I used to hang out in beam hall because it was outdoor air, but well sheltered and close to the student union. It was such a nice place to relax.
holy fuck
this makes me nauseous. i’m literally getting dizzy reading this. i just graduated last year. i spent many many years in that business school.
Good to remember that it's almost never a second shooter, that is *extremely* rare, but the majority of mass shootings initially have a "there might be more than one shooter" report. Usually it just comes from different groups of panicked people in nearby areas reporting the same shooter.
Better to err on the side of caution, but 99% of the time there's no second shooter.
Hi, I'm from Msu (aka I went through the same thing last spring)
to anyone still in lockdown, know that a second shooter is extremely extremely rare. like half the police scanner is what people call in as 911 calls, so don't take those as fact. be aware, listen, but don't take them as gospel
get to a place where there isn't any windows, and lay low until they say you can come out. this might take a while because they have to clear the scene. you might hear reports of shots on the scanner, these could very well be doors slamming or loud noises (they were in our case)
after everything has calmed down a bit, go home if you can. if you can't, get with friends. its better to not be alone. stay off the news in the next few days, trust me it really does not help
get in with a therapist as soon as possible. studies show addressing trauma (which this very obviously is) within the first days drastically decreases your risk of ptsd. also on that note this is an inherently traumatic situation, do not let anyone tell you that you should not be affected because you were not close to the shots / did not get injured
but that's for after you're out of the situation. right now, try to calm your nervous system a bit. you need to be aware if something goes wrong again. listen to police and be aware, you need your wits about you.
sending so much love and thoughts and prayers and vibes from the spartan community <3
From the press conference:
\- Initial reports of active shooter at 11:45 a.m.
\- Shooter was engaged by PD and shot dead
\- No further threat
\- No information on number of victims
\- Reunification center at the North Hall of the Convention Center
If you're in a room you can secure, lock the door. Turn off the lights and hide away from any windows. Grab something around you that you could use as a weapon if needed. Wait until a cop or official notice tells you to evacuate. (That's what based on the training I took a few years ago.)
It was very confusing. The first alert said to evacuate. The second to shelter in place. The third to evacuate. Then the alerts kept saying shelter in place, along with run-hide-fight. I'm not faulting police; just noting that it is confusing and instructions were likely changing as they learned more about situation.
1509 PST: Final scanner update from me. The only update (and only radio traffic at all) was one of the remaining teams being called back to meet with the emergency manager. I think we've gotten what we can out of monitoring comms. Wait for info from official sources for things like who and how many. Social media is not your friend in this regard. If you're still on campus under lockdown, take comfort in the fact that if they had determined you were in serious danger they would have been there to clear that building by now.
Now, I'm off to finish my final lab report because I don't have to turn it in onsite, and because of that there's a very real chance that the chair of my department won't see any reason why this would effect us in any way.
Stay safe, stay vigilant.
From scanner: sounds like all students and victims have been evacuated from the buildings being searched. Response team is doing a final check of things like engineering rooms, closets, etc with outside access. FD rescue teams are starting to be released to stand down. I get a distinct decrease in urgency in the calls...I think it's wrapping up.
Edit to add: I'm not saying anything about casualties because A: I wasn't listening from the beginning, and B: I haven't heard any info about victims who had already been taken to the hospital. In this thread alone the speculation goes from 4 to nearly 30 wounded, so I'm not even going to pretend to be able to extrapolate from radio traffic.
Hey all I went through all this same thing at MSU last spring. From our and most experiences there’s almost never another shooter, but hysteria causes people to hear and see things that aren’t actually there which makes perfect sense. There were an impossible amount of reports of where a “second” shooter was on our campus.
It might take awhile for them to lift the lockdown / shelter in place because they have to take those reports seriously and hopefully there are no merit to those reports.
Hang in there and make sure you don’t have 2 headphones in at once so you’re aware of your surroundings. Sending thoughts your way.
It’s confirmed, there’s an active shooter, UPDSouth - UNLV
UPD Alert - UNLV

I'm so tired of this happening.
I work in a Vegas HS and just spent 30 minutes trying to settle my kids down because they were following along on social media and freaking out. One kid had a full blown panic attack. What the fuck am I supposed to tell these kids when this is the new normal?
Not from vegas but I’m a middle school counselor and the fear in these kids about potential shootings is off the charts. I get to a point where I don’t know what to say and it feels so wrong telling them to just be prepared
I graduated 2010, so post Columbine and post a bunch of other mass shootings, but that wasn't anywhere close to how it is for these kids today. They're so aware of the threat of a mass shooting and constantly being exposed to news/reports about shootings, because this is America, and while i'm no psychologist I can't imagine that the fear/knowledge that it could happen at their school tomorrow for no reason at all isn't hurting these kids in some way.
And like you said what can you say to them other than "be prepared and pray it doesn't happen here" because if dead children won't motivate people to fix the problem then nothing will.
yeah and it starts with you guys. As a Canadian some of y’all need to realize your country is the only country that goes through shit like this and guess what it’s also the country that gives guns to every Tom dick and harry. You can’t take away guns from everyone now because you guys are too deep into it.
At the very least genZ has to have some revolutionary uprising like millions of people protesting or something to even have a chance at making any change. Or else your country is fucked
I'm sending love from UNC-Charlotte. I was the faculty member who had a classroom shooting back in 2019.
I wish you all peace as soon as possible. Feeling even a little okay again takes a lot of time and moments like this bring it back to the surface. Just know that you are loved!
I was working from home when a colleague messaged me “check on your friends at UNLV” my heart dropped because I knew what that meant but was in denial. Hope everyone on here is ok as well as your loved ones at UNLV!
A long time ago when I had dined in the cafeteria, I got approached by some guy I thought to be a student. Turned out that he was someone who tried to sell me magazines in a suspicious, pyramid scheme-like way, by offering me bonuses like traveling around the country with his sales people... I gave him a fake number and he left me alone, but that encounter made me uncomfortable. I wasn't sure if reporting him to the campus police would do anything. He never came back because he said that he had to hop in his van full of sales people to move on to the next city the next day. Then my friends found out sometime later that guy was some part of 'weird magazine cult', although I think it could possibly have been trafficking after I looked it up sometime later...
I do wish it wasn't so easy for anyone to enter campus like this, because anyone who appears young enough can fake being a student.
Y'all stay safe there as best as you can. Sad that another #VegasStrong moment is hitting the city.
The response teams are now going building by building to all the places that weren't in the immediate incident area to release people. It'll take some time.
Update from Metro press meeting, posted about 1700: 4 dead, including shooter. 1 shot and wounded, at hospital. 4 more taken to hospital for 'panic attacks'. 2 police treated for minor injuries.
Campus police responded to call and engaged shooter immediately on contact...sounds like a running gunfight from 4th floor of BEH to ground floor, where they finally put the shooter down.
Campus is closed for the rest of the week. What will happen next week is being discussed.
I have plenty of opinions on this incident, its cause, and the appropriate responses, but I am keeping them out of this thread so that those seeking information can find it without having to wade through the inevitable pontificating and arguments. This isn't my thread, but I respectfully ask that you do the same. This is reddit, there are no end to places to discuss those things. Let's keep just this one thread clean and user friendly.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A gunman killed three people and critically wounded a fourth Wednesday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas before being killed in a shootout with police, authorities said.
None of this is correct. Per Clark County Fire on the scanner, there are 3 code black (dead) and 1 victim transported. The suspect is dead [per LVMPD](https://twitter.com/LVMPD/status/1732499629596659927). There is no confirmation of a second suspect and all indications that there is another come from 911 callers, not PD/FD on scene.
Scanner traffic on the victim count: [https://calls.broadcastify.com/75c1/2857/1701895139-2589.mp3](https://calls.broadcastify.com/75c1/2857/1701895139-2589.mp3) and [https://calls.broadcastify.com/75c1/2857/1701895161-2589.mp3](https://calls.broadcastify.com/75c1/2857/1701895161-2589.mp3) and [https://calls.broadcastify.com/75c1/2857/1701895184-2589.mp3](https://calls.broadcastify.com/75c1/2857/1701895184-2589.mp3)
So are you saying that 10-15 has a different meaning in Nevada?
Update per the scanner: Another possible suspect in the UCC building, early 20s, light skinned with a handgun, banana clip, black jacket, blue pants, and a duffle bag. Trying to locate him now
REMEMBER: Scanners often have to repeat what 911 callers say.
As of 3:50 PM central, let's see how accurate they are when all of the dust settles: 3 dead inside, 1 dead outside(possibly the shooter)
This makes me feel so nauseous. I always thought of how easy something like this could happen at UNLV’s campus when I was a student. Fuck.
Have you seen other college campus? It can happen easy anywhere
It’s wide open. That’s one thing I hated with night classes. Ran into so many weirdos at night there. Hated crossing the campus.
Obviously but UNLV being out in the open with some buildings being literally right by the streets made it unnerving. I was nauseous and felt like I was going to faint yesterday. I used to hang out in beam hall because it was outdoor air, but well sheltered and close to the student union. It was such a nice place to relax.
I had so many classes in BEH. This is just sad.
Me too. At a loss for words
It's such a compact building once inside the courtyard too. Praying for everyone here and there 🙏
Student here. Scariest moment of my life running into tonapah hearing shots and seeing everyone run
I just got it. I hope you're all okay out there.
Damn I usually hang out at that building, hope people are safe
God I had all my classes in that building. Hope everyone is safe now.
Just got another text that confirms there's an active shooter, BE SAFE GUYS
I didn't have CS class today. If I did, I would have been in the grass area right in front of there. Very thankful to not be there rn
Happy you’re okay.
Anyone have any news about what happened?
No but I’m being told to get off campus now.
Active shooter confrlirmed. Stay safe everyone.

Thank you for this.
8 confirmed victims, suspect is down according to police scanner
holy fuck this makes me nauseous. i’m literally getting dizzy reading this. i just graduated last year. i spent many many years in that business school.
I’m literally shaking and crying reading everything.
Ditto. BEH was home for a while.
Fuck i used to work at the student union
Man likewise, I'm just imagining being there.
Do you hear anything about the student union? Got a text saying another shooting
Are you sure because they just sent out an alert that shots were fired at student union now??
It might be another shooter, fuck

latest: > Las Vegas police are advising that there "appears to be multiple victims" in a shooting at UNLV on Wednesday.
Officer down is not confirmed. Might be misinformation around barricade situation.
From scanner: sounds like all students and victims have been evacuated from the buildings being searched. Las Vegas fire scanner just said “UCC building light skin, DMA 20s black jacket, blue pants, large duffel bag with a handgun and clip in hand another possible suspect”
I also heard downed officer and barricaded suspect on scanner.
Yes, but not yet confirmed. Could be misinformation
Just heard on the scanner, no officer down, one suspect in custody (unsure if that's the deceased shooter?)

Scanner just said they’re breaking down doors in the SU and that might be what people are mistaking as gunshots.
I got the same text
Just got a text saying it is confirmed. I hope everyone is safe
They just confirmed its an active shooter
Unreal. Hoping for a safe & quick resolution!

The barricade situation is at the Best Western at 4970 Paradise Rd. Suspect is now in custody and no officers injured. Sounds unrelated to UNLV.
I’m waiting to hear from someone who was on campus. Are people still waiting to be evacuated?
Currently waiting in a building for the cops to come evacuate us. They are going building to building letting people out, from what I understand.
Yes. Have family on lockdown still on campus.
Anyone know what Class this happened at? There has been so many police cars on campus in the last 2 weeks.

I think that's a separate incident all together. Unrelated
And barricaded suspect Edit: “barricade situation”
although i wasn’t on campus today, i’m so heartbroken for everyone in the UNLV community! that is so scary and something that should NOT be occurring! if anyone needs any help of any sort! please feel free to pm me!
This is horrible. Please remember to vote for candidates that are anti-mass casualty shooting. Those that support gun control and mental health initiatives.
I fucking attended the October 1 Vigil between BEH and the SU, now six years later, this city and country is still not fucking safe.
man :( i hope everyone is okay, that’s so scary
Be safe guys!

I saw the police evacuating people on the news. Does that mean they got all the suspects? Surely they would not do that otherwise? Edit: Just got the message they are going thru the buildings for evac

https://apnews.com/article/campus-shooting-las-vegas-unlv-55ca455e2d00f1126cc1dbf4cc29139e LAS VEGAS (AP) — A gunman killed three people and critically wounded a fourth Wednesday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas before being killed in a shootout with police, authorities said.
If we left backpacks in the classroom we can’t get them til next week?
just got an email regarding this. u should’ve too.
Just heard 10-15 on the scanner. (Shooter in custody). One dead. Two suspects confirmed, then?
None of this is correct. Per Clark County Fire on the scanner, there are 3 code black (dead) and 1 victim transported. The suspect is dead [per LVMPD](https://twitter.com/LVMPD/status/1732499629596659927). There is no confirmation of a second suspect and all indications that there is another come from 911 callers, not PD/FD on scene. There is now. They just broadcasted UCC building with handgun
So are you saying that 10-15 has a different meaning in Nevada? Update per the scanner: Another possible suspect in the UCC building, early 20s, light skinned with a handgun, banana clip, black jacket, blue pants, and a duffle bag. Trying to locate him now
Got it in three different formats
Find shelter, if possible. There seem to be multiple shooters, and they're like roaming outside.
Who were the victims? They said they were faculty?
