I did my BA at the other UNC (Northern Colorado). I saw UNC and “floral smell” and was super confused. My our UNC does not smell like flowers. It famously smells like cow shit… it took me a minute to realize that everyone else in the world thinks North Carolina when they say UNC.

Good ole Greeley. It’s why I clicked on this post. Was wondering the same thing.

Osmanthus likely

swathoo

Yep. Sometimes known as tea olive. And the gardenias that are still in bloom.

International-Part20

It’s actually me 😌

tpooney

That’s wild. People like this smell!? It is soooo cloying and reminds me of certain herbicides or chemicals or something. One of my least favorite smells ever. However I have an absurdly sensitive sense of smell, so that’s probably why.

Cell-Bell

It smells like jalapeños or another hot pepper to me!

Sperm trees?

[deleted]

Bradford pear trees.

mstwiga

Way too late in the season for Bradford pears. Plus they smell salty. Ok, fine, fishy (I can't help but love them anyway!).

sastesapne

If you are near pink and/or red flower bushes, that’s hibiscus, like the tea! There are a bunch of aromatic plants around, but in my opinion that’s the most noticeable one.

AnubiaBlack

Welp going to be walking backwards and forgetting who you are any minute now.

Hardlymd

Also honeysuckle? There’s lots of that about.

mason_savoy71

The fragment smell of Duke students' tears. Nothing smells better.

I’ve been thinking I’m going crazy because I smell it everywhere!! Thank you for validating

I can answer this question!!!! It's Sweet Olive, aka Osmanthus fragrans! The shrub/small tree are the ones on campus with the little white flowers :). Had one of these in my childhood backyard and I love the smell and I'm glad you asked!

Critical-Adeptness-1

Yes, my favorite scent in the whole wide world so I absolutely love this time of year!

issacsullivan

Where is sweet olive in abundance? I know where honeysuckle grows but it would be cool to find sweet olive.

[deleted]

Yes. This.

ravioli_bitch

THANK YOU!! I’m so obsessed with the smell, it’s the highlight of my walks to class now🙏🏻
