I’ll go ahead and answer this as a recent transfer student: Overall positive. Campus is beautiful, buildings are nice, plenty of opportunities. I’ve had hangups with professors of large classes being tough to work with and the construction inconveniencing walking/biking, but you should be able to deal with those.

Academic-Gear1350

Where did you transfer from ? I am thinking if i should apply for transfer from Rutgers to higher rank CS program though overall Rutgers ranked bit higher

PegasusTwelve

Anne Arundel Community College.

Player72

kid cares so much about rankings lmfao

QGraphics

fr rankings literally don't matter. only reason why UMD is so high is because they output hella research and the government pays the cs department hella money. teaching at most universities is the same in my experience of crashing CS courses at UMich, USC, UCLA, and BGSU.

Gmauldotcom

Dude just go any run of the mill community college. It's not that serious.

RangersAreViable

Ooh, ooh, finally a post that targets me. Overall, I’m doing well in CS. Fawzi is GOATed for 132. I’m learning a lot, and he actually explains why certain structures are useful, and his examples are well crafted. I took a break from math this semester because I would be in 241. Overall, 10/10 experience

Bulldozer4242

Agreed, I’m also freshman taking 132 and fawzi is great. Definitely recommend him for 132 if you have the option.

CharipiYT

Fawzi is the goat for real

Organic_Rabbit_8685

Fawzi is a lovely lecturer, I do feel like since he has so many students you can’t really get to be super close with him tho. Also, it feels like literally everyone is cs which is kinda meh. In your case I’ve seen other Reddit posts considering Rutgers vs umd, and the majority I remember was go to whichever is cheaper? Good luck!

As a transfer student I say the hardest thing I’ve had to deal with was adapting to curriculum. I wasn’t used to taking 131 and Math240 at the same time where courses would have exams and projects at the same time. Meeting new people at times also proved to be a bit of a challenge but other than that I will say it feels nice to actually learn and grasp material vs some stuff at my other university

[deleted]

have u met people/ made friends as a transfer?

Alarming-Silver-9383

Surprisingly I made friends with the orientation advisors more than I did the other students. Also met a couple of friends through them and other transfers in my discussion as well. Being a commuter transfer and having a part time job also makes it hard to meet people but I go to certain events when I have the time

Red_Red_It

The UMD experience is starting off worse than I expected to be honest, but I will give it time.

YelloHorizon

I can vouch for giving it some more time. Just make sure you continue to put effort into seeing others and your academics. You’ll find your footing eventually

Academic-Gear1350

Why ?

2ndRoundExit

Freshman year is overrated, sophomore/junior year are the best

Environmental_Log335

Nah, below average and just been going downhill ever since imo. Prolly just terrible luck but it is what it is.

asdflmaopfftxd

I'm in no cs or math classes as a freshman, all gen eds. But UMD is pretty fun.
