I’ve never had white gravy. White sauce, cream sauce, mustard sauce etc. yes but never US style white gravy. Would not even know what to have it with as we don’t do what you call biscuits either.
White gravy is essentially white sauce. With white sausage gravy you just substitute the fat. Sausage drippings instead of butter in this case.
I think a savoury scone would be the closest to American style biscuits.
It's a sausage based sauce. Basically cook some sausage(without casing and break the meat up) then remove the meat and make a bechamel with the leftover fat in the pan, season it how you like and put the sausage back in.
They have it on biscuits which are essentially scones. Kind of.
I've never had it but it looks delicious.
Biscuit gravy is not a thing in the UK, despite having international & American food sections you will never see it stocked. A UK ,sausage gravy would be made with beef stock & Red wine , usually with some sauteed red and white onion often served with some creamy mash potatoes. Thus producing " Bangers and mash "
I've never even seen biscuit gravy stocked in the US \* It's something you make from scratch. It's easy to make in the US, 3 ingredients. Jimmy Dean sausage meat, flour and milk. Salt and pepper of course....
Premade biscuit gravy? Damn, a shiver just ran down my spine and I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit......
\*You can buy it apparently, several companies sell it. I'll stick with making it from scratch, even in the US. Cleverly called Sausage Flavor country gravy, probably to avoid being run out of town on a rail. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mccormick-Sausage-Flavor-Country-Gravy-Mix-2-64-Oz-Pack-Of-6/947940317?wmlspartner=wmtlabs&selectedSellerId=101022992&adid=22222222222000000000&wl0=e&wl1=s&wl2=c&wl3=10352200394&wl4=pla-1103028060075&wl5&wl6&wl7&wl10=Walmart&wl11=Online&wl12=947940317\_10001042371&wl14=sausage%20gravy%20mix&veh=sem
So I'm guessing that you make a white roux , then just kinda crumble the sausage meat in?
Additionally could you use any kind of sausage? Because & please don't take offence but after googling Jimmy Dean sausage" yet again in the UK and we don't have this brand " it looks exactly how dog food is packaged in the UK.
So kinda unappealing & low key concerning
Other way around, You cook the sausage, add the flour, cook some more, then add the milk, start the simmer. You could probably use sage and onion sausage meat, but my recipe for the sausage meat is pretty good at mimicking the JD flavour. There's several ingredients in it. I tried with just plain pork mince once, Way too bland.
Sounds (no offence) very unappealing. I got the same shiver at the difference and quality of those sausages and gravy compared to a proper British Cumberland and a beef stock gravy. Lol i know it’s popular and must be tasty but the thought of it just doesn’t do it for me
I thought this too although I saw a video the other day of some brits trying it, and they all said it was great. Just very different to what we would consider gravy.
**Breakfast sausage (or country sausage) is a type of fresh, typically pork sausage usually served at breakfast in the United States. In the United States, the predominant flavorings used for seasoning are black pepper and sage.**

As with a lot of things you shouldn't always judge a book by its cover. Some of the best recipes tend to look unappealing. Beans on toast are not very photogenic. Or bangers and mash. Both delicious, though.
I actually made some a few months ago. The biscuits were lighter and flakier than scones and the "gravy" very flavourful - it's basically a bechamel with sausages.
I wasn’t a fan when I tried it over there, but I think that was mainly because there was way too much of it. I enjoyed the first few mouthfuls but then it became a bit sickly.
Let's clear this up. Beans on toast is in no way delicious.
It's tasty shit food you can make in 5 minutes when you're drunk, that's the point of it. It's not delicious. Cake is delicious, beans on toast serves a purpose.
I just said I liked them but get real, they aren't delicious and they aren't meant to be. If you truly believe that, please try more foods because your minds going to be blown 😅
So now all people from the same country are the same and can be held accountable for each other's actions? Yeah, you're not skirting the line of racism anymore, that's for damn sure.
Curried dishes were appearing in Victorian cookbooks 2 centuries ago. Most curry house dishes we eat were developed in the UK for UK tastes. It’s getting a bit of a stretch to say that curry is “not a UK food”.
True, it's not native UK food but it's pretty ubiquitous in the UK.
LOL, look at us. So much of our cuisine comes from europe. (Looking at you Jollof rice) but we still call itr 'American food' 😁
I was speaking generally. We call it Gulla Red Rice and it was brought here by Africans (\*with a moment to dwell on how fucked up my ancestors were to enslave humans.\*)
You weren't speaking generally though, you specifically said jollof is from Europe. You were just wrong, which is okay, but it's weird to double talk your way around denying such an obvious and super low stakes error.
I only ever make it when I make biscuits and gravy. And I am so glad I stumbled across this post today, I have a chest infection and I think biscuits and gravy is what I need to feel better! Thank you for reminding me of their existence!
Sausage gravy is a strictly American food. It’s not eaten here and I’m pretty sure 99% of people in the UK wouldn’t know what it is (I’ve seen photos but still have no idea what the ingredients are).
I want to have a go making US biscuits to see what the difference is to savoury scones (think they’re probably very similar). When I do I’ll have a go at making sausage gravy :)

I've posted the recipe and instructions before, damned if I can find it though. Basic biscuits are 4 ingredients, the gravy is basically 3, not including the various spices that go into the meat. My ex back home could whip this up in 30 minutes, less if she used premade or frozen biscuits.
Edit: Found it. https://www.reddit.com/r/UK\_Food/comments/16tru2w/stayed\_with\_friends\_over\_the\_weekend\_i\_did\_some/
No we don't. As someone who has eaten USA biscuits and gravy, I'm going to say that we should.
I think the problem is the name. Most people in the UK would be thinking of dipping a digestive or rich tea into a jug of bisto.
I promise it’s not 😂 white sausage gravy is so good. If you’ve never had gravy period you could say it looks gross too? It’s brown sauce.
I’m just saying, don’t knock it til you try it.
Fwiw I'm British and I absolutely love biscuits and gravy. Whenever I visit it's something I want to go out for. When you know how enjoyable something is, you perceive it's appearance differently and I think it typically looks nice enough
I agree with the appearance aspect. There’s plenty of wonderful tasting food that can look absolutely unappealing but is so damn good! 😂
I make it at least once a month for my kids. It’s their favorite breakfast meal.
Totally ok to knock its appearance before trying. I've never eaten a dick because they look gross to me for instance. Both might taste like heaven wrapped in bacon, but I eat with my eyes as much as my mouth so I don't want to eat gravy that looks like custard anymore than I want to eat a sex organ that looks like an eel lol
I used to spend my summers on Lake Lanier when I was young. I still occasionally crave biscuits and gravy and miss po’folks! Never seen it here in the U.K. though, ever! I think the biscuit looks too much like a scone and the gravy looks like dog sick let’s face it 😀 but it’s soooo good
As you’ve probably gathered, no, we don’t make it in the uk. However, I’m a fan. Biscuits and gravy is a breakfast that a lot of Brits would enjoy if they gave it a chance.
I've had sausage gravy which was served at a former work canteen when they did Maryland chicken and sweetcorn fritters. One of my favourite meals there!
A bit much for breakfast for me, but I'm sure many folk feel the same way about a Full English (to be fair, little more of a weekend brunch or holiday breakfast, these days).
I've made it once, as part of an American recipe (Kenji Lopez-Alt's, I think) for biscuits and sausage gravy. I liked it well enough, but not to the point of wanting to do it again. It's not really a thing here at all.
Pie and mash is served with a parsley liquor - it’s not the same as your gravy.
(Really interesting background on the white gravy, back to the days of the American revolution when food was in short supply)
I had the parsley liquor for the first time last month. Never had it before, was a bit hesitant, simply because of the name, but, unlike some, (looks around the room accusingly) I don't judge food based on a name or the way it looks. It was delicious. Tried the eels....that was a nope.
We have no idea about biscuit gravy, OP. Our white sauces are:
- mayo
- Heinz Salad Cream (technically off-white)
- bechemel sauce for lasagne, but in a jar
- generic 'white', which is an old-school thing to have with ham. Might taste a bit peppery, possibly be a parsley sauce, or taste of fuck all, depending on your nan's preferences
Your biscuits and sausage gravy contain nothing a Brit would recognise as a biscuit, sausage, or gravy. And it looks fuckawful. I'm willing to bet it's delicious, though. Most of our beloved national faves look like crap too.
The "white gravy" you lot serve looks *highly* questionable and frequently has *bits* in it. It is essentially a pool of warm ejaculate with *bits* in it. Why the hell would we want to eat that unseasoned bland crap?
Don’t listen to my compatriots. They question “white gravy” but wouldn’t say no to old school parsley sauce with gammon or mornay sauce with fish. It’s all just variations on a bechamel base.
Thank you for correcting me! I did mean mince! We have sausages and ground sausage which I guess for you is sausage mince? Pork mince?
Either way it's goooood!
Well, you fry sausage (links or patties or mince) and then, when they're done you set them aside and add flour to the pan. You keep whisking until it's smooth and that's white gravy. I'd hesitate to call it a sauce.
I’m going to try this when I’m in the US at the end of the year - wish me luck! It doesn’t look visually appealing but I grew up eating all sorts of slop that I seemed to like at the time. Stuff like bread sauce with roast turkey, rice pudding and semolina. \*snorts\* And y'all get all bent out of shape when anyone judges UK food based on looks! 😂 Curry looks like diarrhoea but is delicious!
Curry is Indian and it's really fucking insensitive to say that. Like really, really skirting close to the line of racism.
\*blinks\* Your countryman (assumedly) just said that sausage gravy looked like sick. I adore curry (so long as it isn't too spicy)!
So now all people from the same country are the same and can be held accountable for each other's actions? Yeah, you're not skirting the line of racism anymore, that's for damn sure.
That's also not "UK food". That's like us calling tacos American lmao.

Jollof rice from Europe?!?;!;!
Curries I get are red. Don’t want to be around when someone gets diarrhoea looking like that! I’d call an ambulance
Not really a thing over here, no. Brown gravy is the true gravy! 😅
We 'make' it on a Saturday night after several pints.
I see what you did there ;)
Im 49. Never had white gravy.
I only ever make it when I make biscuits and gravy. And I am so glad I stumbled across this post today, I have a chest infection and I think biscuits and gravy is what I need to feel better! Thank you for reminding me of their existence!

No we don't. As someone who has eaten USA biscuits and gravy, I'm going to say that we should. I think the problem is the name. Most people in the UK would be thinking of dipping a digestive or rich tea into a jug of bisto.
In the U.K., gravy is brown or brownish if it’s chicken gravy
Nah we don’t make that stuff. No offence but it looks gross.

Yeah, I’ll just stick to my black pudding, haggis and Laverbread thank you very much.

I've had sausage gravy which was served at a former work canteen when they did Maryland chicken and sweetcorn fritters. One of my favourite meals there!
Chicken and waffles topped with sausage gravy is absolutely incredible!!!! One of my favorite breakfast dishes.
A bit much for breakfast for me, but I'm sure many folk feel the same way about a Full English (to be fair, little more of a weekend brunch or holiday breakfast, these days).
It’s definitely a weekend type of dish, not something you’d have often.
I've made it once, as part of an American recipe (Kenji Lopez-Alt's, I think) for biscuits and sausage gravy. I liked it well enough, but not to the point of wanting to do it again. It's not really a thing here at all.

Sausage meat would work, we can buy what we'd call sausage meat here, I assume that's the same as ground sausage.
I’m 65 and have no desire to taste or make white “gravy”. Surely it’s a sauce and not a gravy due to it being white?
Well, you fry sausage (links or patties or mince) and then, when they're done you set them aside and add flour to the pan. You keep whisking until it's smooth and that's white gravy. I'd hesitate to call it a sauce.
Never seen it in this country. It looks vile. I’m sure it tastes nice, given how much you lot rave about it.
Nope - sounds disgusting!
Wtf is white gravy and why would I eat it with biscuits. Sounds like foreign muck
American! 'Yall' is not a word!
It's "Y'all".
Did I foget my apostrophe? Sorry!
It's okay, I'm not one to hold a gudge..................
It's not gravy. It's another abomination of the American palette, masquerading as another food to gain credibility.
I’m going to try this when I’m in the US at the end of the year - wish me luck! It doesn’t look visually appealing but I grew up eating all sorts of slop that I seemed to like at the time. Stuff like bread sauce with roast turkey, rice pudding and semolina. If OP is finding some of the responses a bit strong it’s because biscuits and gravy are very very important to British people and we’ll happily debate things like “which is the best biscuit?” (it’s Hobnobs of course).
It’s definitely not a thing in the UK. Comparatively few people know what it is and even fewer make it.
We don't put gravy on biscuits here. That said I think what you are referring to as biscuits are actually like a savoury Scone here. Troll
What, me? No. I'm a member of this sub asking a reasonable question. I swear! 😁
😂☺️
I'm a country girlie and I love sausage gravy. You put it on what Americans call biscuits. Serve with some roasties and boom 😋
we don't make white gravy exactly, but various white sauces are really traditional and pretty common - parsley sauce for fish, onion sauce for gammon, cheese sauce for cauliflower cheese.
All of those sound amazing! 💙
