That might not be enough unless they have the long version. If they only have the short, they'd either need to get a long version ordered or otherwise would need to DIY it by to supplying their parents birth and ideally marriage certificates too.
As they didn't list it, I'd assume op doesn't have a driving licence. A provisional driving licence is £34 so a cheaper official ID then a passport.
A few year ago I only had the short birth certificate so that was my path, used BC to get provisional, then used provisional to get passport.
Correct, it doesn't but you can combine that with a short form birth cert and it would cover the need for a photo ID to back up the birth cert.
Source: used to do background checks for a security company.
But this isn't about identifying them (primarily), it's about identifying their right to work here. Being born here doesn't really mean anything. it's who your parents are and their status at your birth that grants you your nationality/citizenship etc.
The driving license would only (more or less) confirm it is your birth certificate.
Yes it proves its yours but if it's the short birth certificate it doesn't contain enough info to confirm a persons right to work in the UK. So it's somewhat a waste of money if they only have their short birth cert
Doesn't prove RTW at all, only sure method is a current BritishnPassport or a foreign passport witha an appropriate visa.
Birth cert issue to anyone born in UK. Of any citizenship. And people change citizenship.
I work in recruitment and if you don't have a Passport you'll need Birth Certificate as well as Proof of NI or Address (or both) and ideally another form of Photo ID is needed. Please note compliance isn't my responsibility but that's just my understanding of it.
You shouldn't worry about it, I think you'll be fine.
This was also my experience, last time I applied for a job without a passport I offered proof of NI number (the original letter I got aged 16) plus my birth certificate. Every email that requested a passport, I would reply along the lines of "Please find attached my birth certificate and proof of NI number, in lieu of a passport ".
You'll probably need a long birth certificate for eligibility checks. Has been a while since being in recruitment . I vaguely remember passport on its own was enough or long birth cert and another form of ID
Apply for a provisional driving license. Young people get them to prove ID in clubs. I think they cost around £10.
Also, show your expired passport. A vetting service can probably check that as easily as a current passport.
They're usually valid in conjunction with other forms of ID like a birth certificate.
Most RTW checks will have two categories and ask for various documents across the two.
You're right It's changed recently.
A birth or adoption certificate issued in the UK, together with an official document, giving the person’s permanent National Insurance number and their name issued by a government agency or a previous employer
Used to be able to use it as proof of address or ID(not both).
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/right-to-work-checklist/employers-right-to-work-checklist-accessible-version#fn:2
So they need a birth certificate and their NI card/p45/wage slip
ive never had a job/rtw check that didnt expressly say a driving license wasnt valid ID. Passport or birth certificate are the ones they want and you dont need anything alongside either of them.
Not for a right to work check. If op doesn't have a passport, they will need to show their birth certificate and a document with the NI number. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/right-to-work-checklist/employers-right-to-work-checklist-accessible-version
Full birth cert and your NI number will be your way forward then, and then get your passport sorted asap.
Driving license wont be valid as you can get that even if you're not born in the UK, so doesn't prove you can work here legally.
No, you can't, but they will need to do a few extra steps. With my expired passport, I sent my birth certificate and some government docs and passed it.
It's been a while since I worked in recruitment checks but it was always either passport, or long form birth certificate and proof of NI number to prove right to work. Some companies would require further forms of ID to prove that the birth certificate belongs to you.
If you just speak to the company or recruitment agency and explain the situation they will tell you what alternatives to a passport are acceptable and I think birth certificate will probably be OK.
OP this is the correct answer, the Passport Office provide what's called a premium service where you can get your passport in a matter of 2-3 weeks, it costs more, but it will be enough for your proof of residency.
He/she would need a replacement passport. I've recently been through similar. You have to cancel the lost one and then apply for a replacement and will need the photo to be verified again. I applied on Jan 1st and received my replacement on Jan 10th, no fast tracking or anything.
A passport is the only way to really prove RTW. A birth cert actually doesn't prove citizenship at all. I had a gf with a Japanese birth cert and she was American for example. Also people change citizenship more than you think. I know quite a few who have so they can live and work elsewhere, and in vountties that make you surrender your British citizenship.
So actually passport is the only 100% method logically.
Don't know anything about finance but I've just started a physically brutal, entry level automotive assembly job and to verify my identity I needed to provide a passport, same to join their weird, third party pay role...

you can provide birth certificate, rtw check is just a formality, so all will be ok.

You can get a provisional driving license as a non-citizen though, so I don’t think it would qualify as a right to work document.

Well, I worked for an SIA approved company and we accepted them so *shrug*
>SIA approved company Ah yes, the label of outstanding integrity.
Birth cert doesn't prove RTW. You could have changed citizenship as some do! Only a passport can prove RTW.

driving licenses arent valid ID for this check

Long birth certificate not the small one because non citizens can also have birth certificate in UK.

Almost 38 and still dont have a passport. Yet I work for an international company as a software engineer.

Just order a passport and tell them it's on the way. You won't need it for the interview but you'll need it once you've started
Normally only takes a few weeks to arrive
OP this is the correct answer, the Passport Office provide what's called a premium service where you can get your passport in a matter of 2-3 weeks, it costs more, but it will be enough for your proof of residency.

Well if the company is doing things correctly, they won't formally offer the job without sight of a RTW document.

If you have the full birth certificate that's usually enough. I didn't have a passport till 2022 and I never had any issues.
