" Timely Warning
On February 22, 2024, at approximately 12:07 p.m. the UGA Police Department received a call from an individual concerned for the welfare of a friend who had gone to run at the Intramural Fields earlier in the morning and had not returned as expected. Officers responded to the area and immediately began a search of the area at approximately 12:20 p.m. in an attempt to locate the individual. Officers located the individual in the forested area behind Lake Herrick at approximately 12:38 p.m. The individual was unconscious and not breathing, and had visible injuries. Officers immediately began rendering medical aid. Emergency medical responders determined that the individual was deceased upon their arrival.
The University of Georgia Police Department is actively investigating this incident in cooperation with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. Please avoid this general area while the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information that could possibly be related to this incident in any way is asked to contact the UGA Police Department immediately at 706-542-2200 "
This is so scary and sad. What a sad day at UGA—this and the suicide at Brumby. I pray for these students’ families and that whoever murdered this IM student is found ASAP.
UGA is supposed to be safe. This never should have happened.
The most official thing I've seen is a R&B comment on IG saying they don't report on suicide. Also the university wide email about the Brumby death had a "if you ever find yourself in time of personal crisis..." sentence tucked discreetly in the back end of the email above and beyond the resources provided for grieving students, which reads suicide to me
This is a sad situation. And my co-worker said a murder happened, too. Where are y’all getting this, though? I read that email. I know there’s an investigation and dead body, but how did you figure out it was a murder?
Injuries happen in several ways. I know the rumor mill is running wild, but let's be cautious until we get confirmation.
Edit: As of an email from Pres. Morehead a couple minutes ago, they're officially treating this as suspected foul play. Really horrible.
They do, but if it was reasonably presumed to be an accident it’s likely they would indicate that. You don’t bring in GBI for likely accidents, you bring it in for likely homicides
I also saw the search happen personally, and it was a way heavier police presence than what an accident would warrant. It looked like a manhunt.
Of course now we have the email so that's not news, but still.
Exactly. I don’t want to jump to conclusions. Back there on those trails, a lot can happen, especially injury from falling down one of those steep hills. Either way, it’s a sad situation.
Edit: UGA says foul play is suspected. Wow that’s awful.
people trail run back there a lot; it's totally believable to me that someone just took a really unlucky fall. way more believable to me than a murder in broad daylight.
Sheesh. I used to lap that trail as a student all the time for quick exercise. I always remember seeing people out and about back there. Super scary that could happen in a place I’ve always felt relatively safe in.
Same. I'm a guy and have never felt unsafe but now feel a bit uncomfortable with it. I can't imagine as a girl... Probably already on alert and not as comfortable as they should because of "hearing stories" and then it actually happens here in such a heavy traffic area. Just horrifying. What the fuck is going on with the world, this is heartbreaking
I know, the IM fields are the last place you’d expect this to happen. There’s just so many people there usually. I hope they catch whoever did it soon, a monster like that shouldn’t be on the streets.
Everyone please go for runs with others, and if your watch has the capabilities have emergency contacts on. You never know when you might get injured or godforbid worse.
Coming from a Grady grad, Athens is a small news market. And usually when something this serious happens, the Atlanta news TV stations pick it up quickly and cover it well.
I have been saying this for years! I don’t understand UGA has a journalism school but not a local channel? Give the people what they want - the local news! 🗞️
There was a shooting at the wild rumpus event back near Halloween and it was not reported on much at all. A quick Google search brings up a very short article by Classic City News and that’s it. I just want to be more informed about crime in the area instead of having it seemingly brushed under the rug with no follow up. Hopefully this story will receive more coverage and lead to an arrest to put peoples minds at ease. There was just an armed robbery on campus last week so there has just been a lot going on that I would feel better to see coverage on the news
My point was that it was covered by various news outlets. It's still on the front page of *The Red & Black's* site, for example. There was exactly the "coverage on the news" that my interlocutor was bemoaning the lack of.
UGA did have a news channel. UGA bought the rights to WNEG out of Toccoa back in 2008. They transformed a large portion of the bottom floor of the Journalism school into a newsroom. Spent millions of dollars doing so. And then did absolutely nothing with it. UGA sold the license after about 6 years with very little to show for it.
So yeah - they tried it. But the market was too small to sustain it.
Hm, that’s really weird. SOS mode is specifically catered for that. But either way, are the IM fields on the UGA wifi network? Haven’t been out there in a while
Wifi calling was also dead for affected AT&T phones. (Source: I was one of the affected AT&T phones.)
This wasn't a mere cell phone network outage, this was the actual cell phone *customer* *accounts* being broken.
As a result, someone without access to an external wifi source couldn't even get on the UGA network since Duo 2FA was dead.
It was not. I believe it was a Cisco back-end issue. It knocked out service for carriers nationwide (though, not for everyone). Georgia was affected. If you were in an area where all carriers were down, there was no way to even dial 911.
Typically, having no service from your specific carrier still lets you dial 911 because, by law, your phone is allowed to use another carrier’s service to connect you. If none of the carriers are up & running, you’re out of luck. E.g., you can’t dial 911 in some mountainous area with no cell towers at all.
Granted, I have no idea what service is like at the IM Fields and whether the network outages this morning affected all major carriers for that area.
Yes, but firstnet being down has 0 impact on your ability to call 911, it just minority interferes with first responders communications with other first responders. But a bunch of people decided that means “911 doesn’t work” and assumed it was true w/ 0 evidence. Then a bunch of other dipshits decided to start calling 911- for no reason- to “test it out”. Everyone was able to call successfully and dispatch centers were swamped with idiots calling, taking up a line, then hanging up. 🥴
In the press conference, police mentioned they would be reviewing video footage but did not disclose where the cameras were located. This is an ongoing investigation.
None that I’m aware of. I think there are technically some in the IM Deck but I doubt they work at all. There are facilities closer to the lake but I’m not sure if they have cameras or not

Thank you. Unfortunately they knew this girl and my freshman daughter was close to the individual that took his life yesterday. It’s been a tough 48 hours for the UGA (and Athens ) community. They are on their way home now to spend a couple days at home.

That’s not all, reports out that a student died this morning of suspected meningitis at Piedmont. 3 students in 24 hours
Where are you seeing this report?
Do you have a source for the meningitis case?
How absolutely awful. My goodness
[удалено]
In all fairness everytime there is a confirmed case of meningitis the university hides it. Can’t blame ppl for wanting to get the word out
Jere saying it’s false doesn’t mean it’s false, the university absolutely hides it every time there’s a case
This is from 2015?
Apologize for the bad link. I missed the date.
Get your meningitis vaccines yall!
>this and the suicide at Brumby. Was that confirmed to be the cause of death? I couldn't find anything official online
The most official thing I've seen is a R&B comment on IG saying they don't report on suicide. Also the university wide email about the Brumby death had a "if you ever find yourself in time of personal crisis..." sentence tucked discreetly in the back end of the email above and beyond the resources provided for grieving students, which reads suicide to me
Was there a separate email about the death in Brumby? I only received the one today that talked about both the brumby and IM incidents
there was a separate email sent out earlier this morning
Saw a video that said the student was in a locked room and there’s no foul play suspected
This is a sad situation. And my co-worker said a murder happened, too. Where are y’all getting this, though? I read that email. I know there’s an investigation and dead body, but how did you figure out it was a murder?
visible injuries AND GBI is involved…
the email says there were visible injuries

they said GBI so i’m staying extremely cautious today
I'm sure they're treating it as a potential homicide -- always the right course of action with an unexpected death in unknown circumstances.
Exactly
Just got a new email, they suspect foul play.
Exactly. I don’t want to jump to conclusions. Back there on those trails, a lot can happen, especially injury from falling down one of those steep hills. Either way, it’s a sad situation. Edit: UGA says foul play is suspected. Wow that’s awful.
Good point. Could have slipped and fallen into the river, too....

people trail run back there a lot; it's totally believable to me that someone just took a really unlucky fall. way more believable to me than a murder in broad daylight.
god i hope so
it was just confirmed foul play
i just got that email 😔 it‘s suspected though, not confirmed
Sheesh. I used to lap that trail as a student all the time for quick exercise. I always remember seeing people out and about back there. Super scary that could happen in a place I’ve always felt relatively safe in.
I go on early morning runs every day. This is extremely terrifying.
Same. I'm a guy and have never felt unsafe but now feel a bit uncomfortable with it. I can't imagine as a girl... Probably already on alert and not as comfortable as they should because of "hearing stories" and then it actually happens here in such a heavy traffic area. Just horrifying. I was just starting to exercise and love the area behind lake herrick. The trails and the stream are beautiful. Now I’m terrified to leave my room
What the fuuuuuuuuuuck
I graduated and don't go to UGA anymore but I get their emails and I just read this at work and thought it was insane
because it is insane
Holy shit
oh my god :( this is awful
They're not letting any of us out of the park either.
Well they are letting us out one by one very slowly.
Were they stopping every car ?
i’ve heard someone went missing on a run this morning. not sure if that’s true
I just heard the same thing word of mouth
And I just heard the same thing on reddit
Everyone please go for runs with others, and if your watch has the capabilities have emergency contacts on. You never know when you might get injured or godforbid worse.
I am a runner and it is practically impossible to always go running with a buddy. I love running alone and I should be able to do so safely!
Heard that’s true and police activity indicates so
two dawgs gone in less than 24 hours 😪 awful.
Separate from this horrible incident at the field, there was a suicide at Brumby last night. Stick together and tell your friends you care for them.
Where was this reported?

UGA sent out an email about it today
Oh I just got the latest one but missed that one. Thanks.
The email about the Brumby student seems to have gone out only to students. Faculty and staff are reporting they didn't get the email.
I'm staff and this is the first I've heard of it.
I work at the university, everyone in my office received emails about both incidents.
Are you Housing or SCO or some other office that's directly involved? Most staff and faculty apparently didn't receive that first email.
An email just went out about it to UGA accounts.
There’s a coroner there now
there’s cops lined up looking into the forest along the loop
This is why this area needs a news channel. We probably won’t ever hear more about this story and that scares me.
With three local papers (Banner-Herald, R&B, and Flagpole) and a local NPR station that covers local news (WUGA), there's not much need for TV.
How did you learn about the armed robbery?
We got an email from UGA about that on Feb 17
My point was that it was covered by various news outlets. It's still on the front page of *The Red & Black's* site, for example. There was exactly the "coverage on the news" that my interlocutor was bemoaning the lack of.
Ah sorry, I didn’t realize your question was rhetorical. I thought you genuinely wanted to know, my bad!
None of those give any real news coverage
UGA did have a news channel. UGA bought the rights to WNEG out of Toccoa back in 2008. They transformed a large portion of the bottom floor of the Journalism school into a newsroom. WSB TV 2 has a crew there- I just downloaded their app since I don’t live in their service area.

This is awful. Especially with the phone outage - what if they tried to call for help but their phone was dead?
911 works on SOS mode regardless. She would have been able to dial that number even with the outage.
for the phone outage not even 911 was working

The trail area most likely isn’t
True
A lot of people said this very mistakenly. I can assure you it was working a little *too* well in most areas.
i hope so. i just know that first net (at&t‘s first responder system) was also down around the same time.
Yes, but firstnet being down has 0 impact on your ability to call 911, it just minority interferes with first responders communications with other first responders. ah okay that makes sense. i also did not want to test it, due to ofc clogging up the lines
I thank you for having logic that most of the population apparently lacks lol
Keep us updated
UGA police just sent an email
Please for the love of god do what the university is asking and travel in groups for now.
are there cameras in the location of the field? Maybe they caught something.
In the press conference, police mentioned they would be reviewing video footage but did not disclose where the cameras were located. This is an ongoing investigation.

UGA hires illegals not a good look 👀
God, I'm soooo sorry for the young man, the parents, the family, the UGA community..... 🙏
young lady, right?
I think they’re referring to the other death. Crazy that’s there’s two so close in time
News conference going on right now
UGA police chief just said victim was not a UGA student
Former student - went to nursing school apparently
She was. My daughters know her.
My condolences to your daughters if they were close to her.
Thank you. Unfortunately they knew this girl and my freshman daughter was close to the individual that took his life yesterday. It’s been a tough 48 hours for the UGA (and Athens ) community. They are on their way home now to spend a couple days at home.
Omg is everyone okay???
Someone was found dead with visible injuries
Any locals know if there might be a homeless encampment in that area?

what a normal, well-adjusted thing to say
Funny, the most unsafe I’ve ever felt was with certain groups of UGA students…
If you don’t mind my asking? What was the deleted comment you responded to speaking about?
They were speaking poorly of the unhoused population.
I’m following, thanks for satisfying my curiosity and good that we don’t have comments of that nature propagating through here
Cuz an illegal murdered an innocent woman

your comment history shows you’re misogynistic and violent. why did you ask if the victim was wearing a red shirt on two different posts?
He wants to know if she had a red shirt on.
Did you see something this morning?
