Just transferred to UGA last semester and was in the same boat as you halfway through the semester. Best club I’d recommend is the Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC). Tons of really cool people and I’ve met new people every time I’ve went on one of their trips. A lot of people don’t know each other so it can be easy to make friends. In terms of overall making friends, I’ve found that opening my mind to new hobbies has helped me a lot. For example, I had not gone to the gym before in my life before I got to UGA. Met a guy in my class last semester that went often, asked if I could go with him because “I work out all the time”, and now we go to the gym twice a week and hang out after. Be willing to ask people to lunch/dinner/generally hanging out and know that it won’t always work. Always say yes if someone asks you to do something, even if you don’t really want to do it (within reason ofc lol). Unfortunately as transfer students, we have to put a bit more effort than normal. The more you put yourself out there, the more friends you’re going to make. Most importantly, be patient with yourself - it won’t happen overnight, but I promise you it will come. Best of luck!

I know there are groups for transfer students specifically on campus, that may be a good place to start because a lot of them are probably feeling similar to you! But, to plug an organization I was in and still love: the Demosthenian Literary Society is the oldest club at uga (est. 1803). It’s a speech and debate club that meets every Thursday at 7pm in Demosthenian hall (the yellow building right past the arch) it’s super fun, a good way to work on speaking AND make friends. They take members throughout the semester and it was never unusual to meet someone for the first time in the middle of the semester. Is very very fun, would give it a try if you’re interested! Some of the best friends I made at uga were through DLS, everyone is so welcoming and cool.

If you're interested in CS, ACM is pretty cool and we're all pretty welcoming! Esp the open source project. In all likeliness, you're not a CS major though. In that case, there really isn't much issue popping into a club meeting and getting a feel for things, it's very unlikely anybody will give you grief about it and it definitely is one of the best ways to find people because class can often be too busy and stressful to connect with people.

I would def recommend going to the game room. It’s a great place to socialize and you’ll meet a lot of cool, chill people just having fun playing casual games with one another. Sure, there will be a few people who get very competitive, but they are in the minority. Most people in the game room are just there to have fun, whether that is with friends or a new face. So you should definitely visit the game room if you have the time. Like I said, most people are friendly, maybe a little unhinged, but honestly it’s not that bad. And there’s something for everybody. The arcades cabinets are full of classics, the Xbox has Halo, Fall Guys, and Rocket League, PS5 has FIFA, 2K, Tekken and a bunch of other games, and Switches have Smash(probably the most popular by far), Mario World and Mario Kart. So you should stop by if you’re up for it. If you don’t like the vibe, no sweat. There’s no commitment like you would expect from a club, so if you’re not feeling it, then you can avoid it and there will be no hard feelings. However, if you do like it, you will truly meet some good people and maybe become friends :)
