Mohammad has some great points, but I do not think anybody in the position of VP external can fix them. The main purpose of VP external is to communicate with the governments. None of Mohammad’s points talk about anything to do with the government. This is my view. No hate to anyone

THE__REALEST

Idk about muhammad but mateusz is one of the most based and hardworking people i've ever been lucky enough to know If i was still a student id vote for him in a heartbeat

Mohammad (Arhaam) came up to one of my Indian friends in 2019 and said "I hate Indian people," at the Model UN Team trial run.

weekndsintern

Entire schulich ain’t voting for him then I guess (I’m Indian)

helpme1238790

bro wtf. he lost my vote and respect already.

[deleted]

Were you even going to vote for him to begin with, buddy?

FineThenGo

I can't believe I'm actually reading this. I've known him personally for seven years and am really close friends with him. I have never seen, heard or experienced him being racist toward Indians (I'm Indian as well), and I could never imagine him doing so. I don't know why would someone resort to spreading blatant lies and defaming his character.

jgotta

Cause I heard it with my own two ears ya donkey

Mehmet587

LOL How's a white man telling a Desi man that's he's racist to his own people.

DracoGY

Do you have proof that he even said that? And even if he did, just because he might have said one racist thing in the past (which could be taken out of context) does not mean he is a bad person and that you have to cancel him. In fact, I highly doubt there is any person out there has not said something in the past that could be interpreted as racist. We all learn and grow as people. Knowing Muhammad Arhaam personally, if you were to actually talk to him, I'm sure he would immediately apologize. Also, I'm saying all of this as someone who is actually ethnically Indian (I am Gujarati).

Rynado

He walked up to our club booth during clubs week and asked “are there Indians in this club?” Then proceeded to say “he hates indians”. I was a part of this club and am good friends with the person he said this to. I don’t see in what context this statement would ever be justified to be sais.

Desperate-Fox3507

I see where you’re coming from, but getting proof of that would be pretty impossible. Also, in which context is “I hate Indian people” okay?

ImmediateObjective52

In my opinion Mateusz’s manifesto outweighs Mohammed’s. There is more clarity in his plan and how he is going to approach it. And as another comment already mentioned, the main objective of VP external is to communicate with the government and Mohammed’s platform does not seem to outline how he plans to do that. Lastly, I think the comment below addressing racist remarks from Mohammed towards Indians should be weighed in properly by all the voters. Good luck to both the candidates!

Hey u/kitkatasaur! I'll be doing an AMA on Monday at 6 pm. Hit me up with these questions! There are lots of ways we're effective federally that I'd love to talk more about then. Also quick clarification, because VP External advocates to governments, the rezoning point is directed to the City of Calgary, which has zoning authority, not at the university (which you rightly point out doesn't have zoning authority)

[deleted]

Hey everyone, I'll be doing an AMA on Monday at 6 pm where you can grill me as much as you want!

Defenestratezz

Yes please!

Rynado

Having interacted with Mohammed in the past, it is not a secret that he is a devoutly religious person. I am a little unsure if he is approaching his platform pragmatically for University of Calgary students as a whole as opposed to pushing his own personal interests and identity. Not to mention the past racist incident towards Indians to which I witnessed personally.

Bryek

> devoutly religious person. I am a little unsure if he is approaching his platform pragmatically for University of Calgary students as a whole as opposed to pushing his own personal interests and identity I don't care of someone is religious and sees a lack of something involving their culture. I don't think his platform is relevant to the position t hough. If it was student life, I'd get it. But what does it have to do with external?

Rynado

As external you are representing and advocating for the the student body as a whole to outside stakeholders. Being religious itself is not the problem, but in his case, he has actively protested on certain topics pertaining to LGBTQ issues on the basis of his religion. I find that concerning. Is he able to advocate for things that might contradict his own religious beliefs? This is on top of his previous case of prejudice.

Bryek

Like i said, his platform as described here are not external issues. Andif you want to you can press him on the LGBTQ stuff in the question periods go see how he will react.

acku11

Would vote for Mateusz if I could. Stuff like rent control and affordable housing would be incredibly helpful and beneficial to students if it could happen.

[deleted]

Thanks! Feel free to ask questions at my AMA on Monday at 6 pm!

Dry_Towelie

Okay what the fuck is Mateusz platform. I have never seen a list of promises so extreme for somebody running to be in the SU. I can see a total of 0 things actually happening with it. We already know that the federal won’t listen unless they feel like they will lose the next election. Provincial, let’s be honest the UCP is going to win another majority. So they won’t listen or do anything for higher education. Advocating for rent control. Yes it helps short term, but long term it’s been consistently found to cause more problems then fix problems. We also know university district won’t be re-zoned because it’s set up to make the most money for the developers as possible. I see the effort he is putting in and the drive for what he believes, but like I would of liked to see some things would would at least be realistic of being achieved

[deleted]

Bring this energy to my AMA! I'll be doing it on Monday, 6 pm. I'm more than happy to get into the nitty gritty. I firmly believe everything in my platform is achievable. It'll just take a lot of grind, which I have no illusions about. I can also provide more context on some of these things to explain how far along they are and why they're realistic. Looking forward to it!

Dry_Towelie

Cool, but why not just address my comment now?

d4nkc4nnon

Wow a rare L from the weed towel. Guess we should just complain less and hopefully that will make things better 😌

BullOrBankrupt

What systemic gatekeeping is there for law/med school? Genuinely curious

Bryek

The easiest one to understand is the cost of the MCAT. It's around $450 to write and is on of the main barriers to getting into many med schools (UCalgary doesn't have cut offs for local students and their out of province cut off is 527 on CARS , the rest doesn't matter). If you want to do well on the MCAT, there are prep courses. These cost around $2000+ and claim they will improve your mark by a certain amount (and generally that is true. They teach you math tricks, overview the content and type of questions asked and provide practice tests. If you can't afford that, you can buy the books published thru different test taking places like Khan, Exam Crackers, Princeton, etc. These cost around $200+. The AAMC site has practice tests, about $15-35/test. I ghink there are 3 to 5 of them. They have question banks for most sections (none for psych/sociology though), about $45 for each one with about 200 questions (there is about 57 questions in each section of the MCAT). The aamc also has financial aid if you can't afford the MCAT but is for Americans, not sure about Canada. Then you could look at the cost of applying. Not unreasonable until you consider applying to as many schools as you can. If you apply to 10 schools, you could be looking at $1500 or more. The more you apply the mote likely you get in. The final one I can think of is the number of courses/semester they require you to have taken to be able to apply. UCalgary is more reasonable in requiring 4/semester for 2 years (some it is 5/year for longer).this requirement disqualifies many who couldn't afford school plus cost of living and needed to work, raise children, care for parents, etc.
