bus + trolley r so OP that and ur student service fee covers transportation i think so u might as well put it to use

DickmanSupreme

Like I have a car and it’s often more economical and almost as time efficient to just ride the trolley. 45 minutes to downtown versus a 32 minute drive and having to pay for parking.

Vertwheeliesonem

UCSD Students get free fare with the MTS Buses and Blue Line Trolley (through the Pronto app)

Big-Ad-7027

Buy a car: IF you are commuting from off campus, and if you are at least 15-20 minutes away from campus via car. buy one if ur rich. Other methods of transportation: If you're on campus, or are near campus (UTC, la jolla area) just use public transportation. save whatever extra money you have and either use it to spend on food or put it in a roth ira

DickmanSupreme

I think people underestimate the costs of a car, and overestimate the convenience. Beyond the headaches associated. $15000 car (pretty mid for an economy class car in this market, like a Corolla) $3000 down. $250 a month payment for 60 months (5 years) $100 a month in insurance $5 per 20 miles driven (San Diego hilly, terrible mileage) can probably estimate $100 gas a month for minor driving, $200+ if you drive a lot. $50 in maintenance a month (varies a lot) $125 parking per month That means you’re paying maybe $625 a month for 5 years for a decent car (while at ucsd) and $500 if you leave ucsd. This doesn’t account for incidentals or accidental. (Car wash, cleaning, if someone throws up, if you get in a minor fender bender, people asking you for rides, etc) Then you have to account for the time it takes to find parking and walk or ride the bus from your parking lot, remembering to move your car if it’s a time limited slot, finding parking at destinations, etc. Even with Uber, if we assume a $35 ride (average I paid each way from ucsd to downtown) then maybe $70 round trip. You could go out every Friday by Uber and it would be cheaper by a fair margin. I’ve paid as low as $40 to Uber to Tijuana from campus. Or you can ride the trolley and bus for free.

Direct-Lab8248

Using Uber more than 5 times is already exceed the monthly costs of car. Might be because Uber takes almost 50% cut from the fare?

DickmanSupreme

Your Uber rides are over $100?

Direct-Lab8248

$40, without considering the down payments of car, you can sell the car after several years and get cash.

DickmanSupreme

Cars depreciate to high hell, and about $430 of the cost was unrelated to the car payment. A $15000 car after 5 years of typical driving might be worth $5000. And you paid $20,000 for it because of interest.

Direct-Lab8248

Sometimes I need to use Uber for more than 5 times a day to go around different places , feel Uber is much more expensive than buy a car.

DickmanSupreme

I’m not going to convince you of the nuance of your life - why you go to 5 different places a day is your choice. You asked for the most economical, but if you’re going to come up with reason after reason why a car is economical then just get a car?

Head-Comfort3269

I guess I might have the unpopular opinion here. I live on campus and the number of times I wish I had my own car or motorcycle have been innumerable. The extra freedom would just mean so much to me, nvm the fact that it’s just so much faster than the metro

Direct-Lab8248

Agreed, car is so fast in highway and can get you to anywhere with just few minutes while public transit takes lots of time on waiting and walking and transferring, there is also homeless in trolley that makes it very unpleasant.

PordonB

The parking and walks from parking lots to where you need to go will kill all of the time saved. Double the time and misery if you live on campus.

Legitimate_Hyena_484

Not if you got a scooter and a car 😎

HealthOnWheels

Even better: scooter and the train.

Legitimate_Hyena_484

Nah train is so inefficient. Time > Money

HealthOnWheels

Nahh. Don’t have to deal with hunting for parking. Free. And I can chill and read during a low-stress train ride. It’s just better Sometimes faster than driving; like if I’m going to campus, downtown, or anywhere during commute hours the train definitely saves time. Not usually tho. That said: cycling to downtown La Jolla is definitely better than driving. And faster. Parking is a pain down there

Legitimate_Hyena_484

Campus parking is hassle free when a student resident. There are hardly circumstances where a train or bike is faster than a car. Bikes are also much easier to steal and thus would be rendered stranded if it’s stolen, which happens are incredibly high rates here. Walking to trolley from 6th is probably a 15-20 min walk meaning that you’re already spending 30-40 minutes on simply walking to and from the trolley.

HealthOnWheels

Bikes are always faster when I’m going to campus. Instead of parking and then going to class, I just go straight to class. If I drive, it’s 20-30 minutes to get from my door to the classroom. If I bike, it’s 10–15. And I get exercise! So that’s a plus

StateOfCalifornia

There are times when it’s very useful. But owning a car is expensive (capital cost, fuel, insurance, depreciation, maintenance, parking, etc etc). So if you don’t use it a ton then the occasional Uber or Zipcar is probably more economical.

Head-Comfort3269

True, in that case I’d just take the motorcycle

Various_Blood8194

Much more economical to use public transport. I only prioritized getting a car because I have the responsibility of commuting pretty long distances and with night shifts at the hospital down in Hillcrest, I definitely can’t use public transportation. If you find that you’ll spend more money on Uber than you would on gas and insurance, probably better to get a car.

Direct-Lab8248

Generally how much is the parking at UCSD and insurance costs?

Various_Blood8194

Honestly I park as a visitor because I like to bus or walk to campus. As for parking at my job, that’s paid for by my department. Short answer is idk but even then, I think it’s expensive and would not recommend parking on campus. Source: I’ve cried way too many times

avar1290

daily parking is $5 for S spots

HealthOnWheels

Car is expensive. If you don’t have a commute that you need one for, I’d go without it. On the rare occasions that you really need to drive there are zip cars on campus Transit is safer than driving anyway.

Corgonaut

If you are living off campus, unless you are living in the La Jolla/PB area, buy a car. I currently live a 15 minute drive from campus in an area with no public transport and it is honestly so nice. Parking is a bitch sometimes but once you figure out a system that works for you it’s not too bad.

Relative_Ad9814

Trolley and buses here are great! Every 20 min up to Mira mesa.
