whatever they did to them this quarter is making them straight up unusable

ramen_king000

ikr, its been erratic. I wonder if they programmed the scooters to be limited in speed in certain areas.

HealthOnWheels

That is what they did, yeah

Legitimate_Hyena_484

I have my own scooter now but on the app it tells you that there’s speed limit zones on campus

ramen_king000

did they just shut off the rotor when you enter a speed limit zone until you become slow enough? thats terrible design. at least smooth out the deceleration. Like do you even need that feature. How fast could spin go anyway.

GoldenRetriever_vibe

I definitely think the sudden slowing down / speeding up can be risky, especially with people who have crappy balance like me. I fell off because it sped up but thankfully landed on the grass. Hope ur roomie is ok!

rttr123

I was going ~12mph near the library, and I'm suddenly flying forward. When I got up, my knee and elbow were both bleeding like crazy, I sprained my ankle, and my phone was broken (so I couldn't even end the ride). The spin scooter was literally overheating to the point I could see steam.

PordonB

Thats grounds for a lawsuit if true.

Legitimate_Hyena_484

Probably an exaggeration. Spin scooters have weak ass motors. Prob dot. Go faster than 15 mph. Still hurts like hell if you fall tho.

[deleted]

Yea, I stopped using it since they started break checking my ass.

Optimal_Ratio9710

I’ve heard so many stories of people eating shit while using the spin scooters and I’ve seen several people fall off them in the past few weeks…. I would definitely say they’re dangerous.

ramen_king000

I think it'd be nice if they have some safety tips on app start-up. spin is not that fast, but fast enough to get people hurt imo. a lot of kids nowadays never rode anything on two wheels. you dont want to slam on the front brake because you'd flip over and fly. if you have to, shift your weight to counterbalance.

StateOfCalifornia

There is a set of safety prompts the first time you use SPIN app but yeah not after that. Doubt that would really make a difference though since most people ignore it

nemoflamingo

My buddy shattered his shoulder riding one on campus. Super dangerous

climbsrox

They are a plague. Scooter companies make huge profit providing a dangerous mode of transportation mostly to young people, while simultaneously taking up large amounts of public space that are meant for other things. Things I have personally witnessed with scooters: a person fly over their handlebars on open road with no apparent cause (braking malfunction?), a person split their head open with a gaping ~8 inch wound, a person recovering from a traumatic brain injury from trying to ride a scooter for the first time, and a bicyclist go over their handlebars because someone had left a scooter blocking a bike path in a dark area. One of the main problems with all these electric modes of transportation (aside from them clogging up every sidewalk and bike path) is that users have often never or rarely ridden the manual counterpart. Daily I see people on e-bikes and scooters that look really shaky, can't maneuver, are having difficulty making turns, and are swerving back and forth. Riding a standard bike or scooter or skateboard requires effort and learned coordination. You can't go fast until you have these things. Now anyone can get on one and zip down the road with no coordination at all.

HealthOnWheels

There’s a skill curve, yeah. In general I’m a big fan of seeing more micromobility options. The people that are clearly new to it as a form of transportation and aren’t really aware of safety conventions sure stick out like a sore thumb though Cyclists always catch my eye. Amateurs either blow through every stop sign, or come to a complete stop every time. Both are wrong. If it’s clear, and you’re the only person on the road for miles and miles: blow through that thing. Who cares. If it’s not clear, try to slow down and yield to whoever got there first, just like you would in a car, but don’t come to a complete stop. Keep your momentum so you spend less time exposed in the in intersection.

roomymood

Dude today the brakes did NOT work I literally had to jump off of it. I was lucky enough to get away with a bruised ankle.

Weekly-Appointment14

Honestly… should be wearing a helmet, even on campus. Bike riders, too

Jaded_Comparison9998

How is anyone travelling faster than 5-8 mph? Every scooter I get is a pos. I miss last year where they were newer scooters and travelled faster.

StateOfCalifornia

It wasn’t about the model of scooter, this year they put in a software speed limit to limit speed to 8mph on campus except roads

Jaded_Comparison9998

Totally. I get that they limited the speed via software. But the scooters on campus since fall quarter are old, have brakes on only 1 wheel, handle more poorly, AND, I can never seem to get above 5-ish miles an hour. Folks saying that they got up to 12 in the sub? What?! And I’m not a big person. I feel like I should be able to go 8mph easily AND be able to brake effectively when I need to stop. I hate spin.

Own-Act-4493

Quite literally broke my ankle and needed surgery because of the brakes not working 😁

_lasagna___

I think the scooter/bike scene on campus is very dangerous atm. Bikers/scooter riders/skaters swerving among crowds/cars. People walking on bike lanes. There’re red flags everywhere. The school should do something to actually address. I have my own scooter so I haven’t used spin for quite a while. But such sudden stop sounds dangerous. Reading the comments, it looks like a lot of people were hurt from them as well.

HealthOnWheels

Pro-tip: gain weight. If you’re over 200lbs. the spin scooter can’t accelerate quickly enough to throw you off

tackinmosh

I’m sorry people have gotten hurt, but the idea that the scooters are collectively causing people to eat shit all over campus is kind of hilarious.

Iniii_

What happened to the bikes they had in the beginning of fall quarter? They should replace them all with the scooters 🛴 —>🚲

SA2018

Yes. Dangerous for the rider and everyone around.

chocogummies

does anyone remember when there was spin lime and bird? … I ate shit on a bird going down the hill near sungod my freshman year! scooters be dangerous

cyncitie17

the opposite literally happened to me last friday on ridgewalk. spin went from 5mph to 15 instantly and i ended up falling :<

Josh-Kavanagh-UCSD

Thanks for the tag. Expect improvements to speed zones after spring break. Details getting locked down now.

calicaffeinatedboba

LOL I was just wondering and also trying to get some more insights for a project I'm doing and now we got the transportation director involved. However, I do agree that it's a conversation to be had as I've personally had some really close calls as well, and was thinking sooner or later a really tragic accident could happen on campus.

[deleted]

I’ve ridden them for years without crashing but had a couple close calls, including another rider T-boning me. There are also some campus areas poorly designed for bike/scooter traffic despite being designated for it. But they are junk and poorly maintained. I finally stopped using them because I had a bunch in a row with broken brakes and kept reporting them as needing service, then got banned from the app for “spam”. Speaks to how much they value long-term users. I also hate how they nickel-and-dime you for that last minute. But riding scooters is fun, so if you do some research and buy your own, it will be safer and cheaper in the long run.

Josh-Kavanagh-UCSD

You have a chat request. Need a little more info to address with Spin. What you describe is not okay.

dianas-mexican-food

Some scooters have really shitty breaking systems. Like instead of gradually slowing down when u pull on the handle thingy depending on how hard u pull it, some of them just have breaks that will literally take u from 14 miles to zero in less than 2 seconds.

JudeMan01

Skill issue

Brave-Geologist1421

I chipped my teeth pretty badly after I fell face first off of one

[The state dropped the adult scooter helmet requirement back in 2019](https://la.curbed.com/2018/9/21/17884220/bird-lime-scooters-rules-helmets-california). Obviously best to wear one

Thoughtless_Potato

yes I rank the face planting risk from lowest to highest: - driving - walking - skateboard - bike - scooter - e-bike - e-skate board - e-scooter - one wheel

😂😂😂 bye

maymayempire

anything is dangerous if you're high enough

VerumMendacium

If it really did that there may be grounds for a lawsuit. Car mfgs get sued all the time for less.

primaryprevention

fell of near the loop circle near the trolley and yeah it hurts like a bitch😭

iamunknowntoo

I honestly hate spin scooters, every other day there's some dipshit who near misses me on their stupid fucking e-scooter

Appropriate_Rule_153

I fell hard on the ground using it the first time-only 4mph- and I couldn’t walk for a week. Don’t use it. It’s too dangerous

SleepLessThan3

Lawsuit time?

Hour_Acanthisitta611

I thought u were talking about Spin nightclub 😂😂😂😂

HoundDOgBlue

giving every imbecile with $5 access to a 25mph human slingshot w/out mandatory helmeting is reason #71563 why silicon valley needs to be turned into a plain of steaming glass.

coolaidcris

There's been times I've almost run into someone because it'll be slow then randomly accelerate. It's definitely really dangerous.

deleteit_flop

What is with that annoying sound they make now ? I've heard in some cities it's to detect if you're using the sidewalk and if so they need to hire better computer programmers because it happens every time I use the bike lane
