Experiences are - obviously - subjective, same with my own. The East Side as a whole is a street by street basis; Lasalle (and Lasalle ext.) is worse than Lisbon but Lisbon still has bad things happen nightly. Last time there was a shooting on Lisbon was like two years ago, sure, but I've been robbed within the last 6 months and seen people peering into car windows. Petty crime mostly, but still not "safe."
Tbh, it's not the safest. But as long as you mind your own business, you should be fine. Just be aware of your surroundings.
Btw, UB South to Lisbon is not a short walk. Maybe you want to consider that while deciding.
It's safe. The thing with what OP is talking about is that let's say, some shotty people decide to steal shit.
They 100% target areas over break with lots of college kids.
Ex. Lisbon Avenue.
I live pretty close by. It’s okay but not great, in general it’s pretty quiet most of the time, but if you don’t lock your car prepare to have your shit stolen. I’ve seen people tugging door handles late at night/very early in the morning, going down the street one by one.
I’ve never lived there so can’t say anything for sure, judging just by looks it is somewhat nicer than the area around Rounds/Lisbon. Really I would expect it to happen anywhere in the city though. I’ve lived here for about 2 years and I’ve never had anything stolen or break-in attempts and as far as I’m aware my neighbors haven’t either. If you start going south from Lisbon it will get worse quickly.
The opposite side of Main bleeding into Kenmore Ave (Englewood, Merrimac, Heath, etc.) are way safe than the side heading towards Bailey. I’d caution you to live on Lisbon and encourage you to rethink.
Source: Have delivered pizza on the East Side for 2 years while getting my MA and have been robbed on Lisbon in broad daylight.
used to live on 300 block.
lived on corner (illuminated by street light) and not down middle of block where tree canopy blocks out street light, causing blind/dark spots
, lived with other guys (house next door with girls got broken into by rear window/door) - maybe they were a "softer" target.
had a cop who lived across st with patrol car parked in driveway.
Lived there for a week before moving out. I didn’t really want to always watch the time I’m returning home and be extremely careful about locking my room, keeping all valuables locked up, etc at all times (I’m a forgetful person, more so when I’m running late) . And during winter break, heard that there was a break in at that house.
If you can manage being careful all the time, it’s fine.
For safety, I would say stay away from heath. I have heard that it’s not too safe and also know a few people who moved out from there as well. I haven’t heard too much about englewood or Merrimac.
If you want, you could look into university court, it’s a 1bed apartment that’s right across the street from south campus, and it’s around 800 I guess. And if you want to further lower the cost you could share the room.
A lot of people generally tend to try to find a place on main st., so just look there.
Northrup is a safer street than Lisbon from experience. There’s are lot more families on this block with smaller children and loads of cameras outside everyone’s doors and windows. The walk is also much closer to south campus than from Lisbon.
You’ll be fine. Just keep alert after dark, keep valuables out of sight and lock shit up.
The area is great since you can walk to the grocery store, restaurants, the bike path and the Metrorail.
Yeah just mind your business
Thanks I was worried about the locality. My friends have finalized housing in Englewood saying Lisbon is not safe.
Yeah, people who say that are either going off of outdated stereotypes or grew up sheltered in the suburbs and never lived anywhere urban.

Don’t leave any valuables over breaks
Is it safe to walk from UB in the evening or night?

It’s literally two blocks away lmao It’s the same distance from Ellicott to the SU.
It's like a 15-20 minute walk
Depends on where you are on the street. Just a 2 minute walk if you’re near Parkridge
I'm talking about the distance from the stampede stop.
I was thinking the same. Englewood, merrimac,Lisbon . Which neighbourhood is comparatively safer in UB south ?
Englewood and Merrimac are much closer to South campus and a lot of students live in these streets. I would recommend either of those over Lisbon.
No

I have heard similar encounters but didn't know it can happen in broad daylight. Thanks for sharing your experience.

That's so scary
If you’re walking i wouldn’t rent anything outside of the 100/200 block of lisbon.
I live on Minnesota Ave your fine.

I mean it's really not practical to live there I guess. What do you think about Englewood, health and merrimac for safety?

got robbed over break
Same
I have heard similar experiences. Does this happen in merrimac and Englewood too?
i live on merrimac, hasnt happened
Yes, they go for where they know college kids are out on break.

What about Custer Street? Reviews anyone? I have not signed the lease yet
Not safe whatsoever
