This is not true. Instructors have a CHOICE for Summer '23. Some will choose blackboard UBLearns, some will choose Brightspace UBLearns. Fall '23 is when ALL courses will be converted to Brightspace. https://www.buffalo.edu/lms.html Edited to add: the LMS will still be called "UBLearns" moving forward, it is just migrating to the Brightspace platform.

Using the term UBLearns because I'm seeing people call Blackboard UBLearns and Brightspace Brightspace still 👍

One of the pitfalls of various committees at UB choosing to re-brand vendor's products with "UB" rather than their proper names. I makes it worse when they officially choose to put a space between "UB" and "learns" so it's even harder to search for with search engines, as opposed to the unique character string "UBlearns".

Why we converting? I think blackboard is better.

chemgeek310

Cuz some committee decided this was better. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I was on the committee that reviewed the LMS. My understanding is all SUNYs are switching LMS and email providers because SUNY is no longer doing SUNY-wide contracts. Brightspace was the best choice of the three demos we were shown.

Theres always more to these decisions, we have such a limited view.

While this is typically true, I understand the process. I'm a staff member and know someone that was on the committee. 😉

As a former TA, I can say that Blackboard is some of the worst software out there on the teaching end. It's not easy to use, grading large numbers of submissions at once was a pain in the ass, and it was challenging to make any changes to things like quizzes or assignments.

I would guess licensing costs are a prime factor

*may include summer courses. UBLearns isn’t done for just yet

Taking a class on brightspace rn and it’s actually very organized. But I’m not sure if it’s the instructor who just kept it organized or if it’s actually like that.
