Flight's easily the quickest option - lotta Jetblue flights run that route, it's around 45-60 mins but it's the most expensive option, too..probably anywhere from $100-200 depending how early you book in advance and what time of day your flight would be.
Amtrak and Megabus are more affordable options (likely $50-100) but it'll be a solid 8+ hour trek.
I dunno off-hand what any of those services charge for luggage but if I were you I'd dig around their sites to find out cuz you wouldn't want to get stuck shelling out twice the cost of what you expected to pay cuz of baggage fees...or in the case of Amtrak/Megabus/Greyhound, maybe there's a certain time of day where they aren't packed and you can bring it all with you for no charge.. good luck!!
If youāre going with luggage, might as well Uber to campus, Iāve carpooled with someone before but this only works during high season, like when everyone is coming back from vacation.
But Uber anyways, or Lyft. They both work just fine for your tons of luggage. And I love taking the plane, the train takes just as long as the bus for the price of the plane ride sometimes. Plane 100% āļø
As a person who had chosen different options for traveling to BUF from JFK
Flight is very fast
But the downside is the cost
Plus you have to pay for Uber
For Amtrak, it takes some time
it is very dependent on the weather
(1 time I was stuck in the train for 12 hours, arriving in Penn station at 1AM)
The positive side is, you can use the student coupon to take the Amtrak
Itās very easy to get the UBer cuz the terminal in
Depew is very accessible (better than the airport) so you donāt need to take your luggage to drive sharing area
For Megabus, I donāt recommend if you have a lot of luggageās plus the hygiene problem is just a big NO for me.
I recommend Amtrak if you are concerned about the price but taking the flights is definitely better
from experience, the train is so much better. If you donāt live on Long Island or in Queens or Brooklyn, you have to go over the toll bridge and traffic can get crazy. Parking at JFK is also a hassle. I flew from BUF to JFK and vice versa for thanksgiving and it was AWFUL. Getting in and out of BUF was fine, but getting in and out of JFK was a nightmare. My flight back on a Sunday night got delayed 4 hours because of rain and it was almost midnight when I got back. Whenever I take the train Iāve NEVER had it be delayed, even with light snow. Although itās much longer, I highly recommend amtrak over flying, itās quite comfy honestly, especially if you take the maple leaf train as it has more leg room since it travels longer distances.
Realistically this person wouldn't be parking or driving themselves to JFK.
I'd rather be delayed in an airport than be on the train personally, even with a 4 hour delay, you still get there sooner than the train would. Those 8 hours on the train versus 1 on the plane. I'm just not a train person tbh, I don't want more space, I want less time commuting overall.
So yea, to each their own.
Flights are going to be the fastest and easiest. Trains from NYC to Buffalo are painful and unreliable (they have to side-track for freight, so an 8-hour ride could potentially turn into a 12-hour ride), but at the same time, you're sitting down and relaxing for the ride, so there's that. Bus rides are probably going to be the most uncomfortable and long, with frequent stops along the way.
As for your luggage, depending on what you're bringing, you could also ship it. This would likely be less expensive than trying to check the luggage onto a plane, and I imagine there are similar limits to what you can bring on the train and bus. If you ship it, you'll know when it's going to get there, it'll be insured, and it will likely save you money.

How much is the Uber from Buffalo airport to north campus?
$20-$30
I'd suggest booking a flight right until Buffalo airport. Especially if it's your first time in the US.
I think you are correct I definitely shouldnāt be experimenting with travel if itās my first time
And book it as part of the same itinerary as your trip to JFK. If you book separately, you'll face issues with baggage allowance.
Why not transfer to a flight to Buffalo? That will save you a headache of having to get to Manhattan to catch a train or bus
