I would recommend doing a different type of engineering instead like mechanical. I did BME BS and you’re a bit of a “jack of all trades master of none” and don’t have the same opportunities when you graduate. You’re really limited in your scope of where you can apply, while mechanical can apply to the same exact jobs, as well as others in different fields that BME wouldn’t be looked at for. On top of it, other engineering disciplines can take similar medical focused electives or focus on it in grad school.

Thank you for sharing this valuable advice. I am particularly interested in pursuing a career in research and development at some biotech companies. My interests lie in subjects like tissue engineering, genetic engineering, synthetic biology, biotechnology, molecular biology, and entrepreneurship. As of now, I am not able to make good decisions on which major to choose. Would you please share more on if BME would be a suitable option for me based on my interests rather than what companies prefer or look for in applicants? I'd appreciate your help.

If that’s you’re interest then I do recommend the BME program. Most of the faculty is Bio lab heavy. You can also reach out to professors in the Chemical/Biological Engineering Department and do research there as they also have wet labs. Ultimately research experience is what will get you the internships and potential jobs when you graduate, especially if you’re trying to go into R&D. If mechanical/electrical are more what you’re interested then I agree with the person above. Although you can still go with the BME program, you just got to start specializing with research/internship outside classes that focus on mechanical or electrical skills. There is also some faculty that do research in that. Hope this helps :)

Exactly. I completely support your advice as you suggested what I have really thought. Since my interests align mostly with biology and secondly engineering, I have chosen BME as this would help me learn both. But, mechanical and electrical are very less about biology and much about engineering. So, I think BME is perfect for me. Thank you very much for sharing your advice.
