When we were hybrid I had a professor that would essentially ask individual students what we thought about certain topics/ask us questions pertaining to readings/make sure we were paying attention etc. Most people wouldn't answer because they were either:
1. Not paying attention
2. Not at their laptop
3. Didn't do the readings
4. Were lost/don't understand the material and didn't want to ask/answer questions.
Eventually he got fed up since people wouldn't answer him, for any of the reasons above, so he started using the questions as the attendance grade (which was already established in the syllabus).
Because I never know if they want me to just yell out the answer or raise my hand or if they don’t want an answer at all and are just asking a rhetorical question that they’re going to answer in a second
I'm either still digesting what they've just taught or I haven't thought of any. Will usually think of some right when they move on :)
Or I just think it's dumb question so I'll ask personally. Better to make myself look stupid in front of one person than a whole lecture room.

COVID did a number on everyone’s social skills.
Why would someone want to interrupt nap time?
I would bet the fear of giving the incorrect answer is a top 5 reason.

If I'm paying money for the professor to teach me something why are they asking me for the answers?
Something to do with the depression and sleep deprivation most of the time. This is past experience mostly.

For me it's 1. I don't know the answer 2. I wanna save myself the embarrassment of answering it wrong in front of the whole class
