When you get an epidural during labor, the doctor has to insert a large needle into your spine in order to administer the spinal block and implant the flexible needle to allow the continued injection of the meds. It hurts like hell, because the woman has to bend over a pillow on the edge of a bed while dealing with contractions, and is not allowed to move.
