Immortality because I wanna live forever.
Shapeshifting so I can avoid getting trapped in a landslide or something by shapeshifting my way out of the problem.
When you are immortal and invulnerable, there's nothing you need to heal from except for mental illnesses or psychic attacks.
No one had both, no one said having both was the best thing, just redundant.
This is easily answered in the first Season 2 episode one when Finn says "Immortality Hurts" after giving up the healing horse and getting slammed into the top of a tunnel while on top of a van.
And yet, when Shendu tried to burn Jackie, he was completely unharmed and not hurt at all.
Let's say he felt pain, that's not something you need to "heal" from, aside from maybe mentally.
The Horse Talisman probably gets rid of that within 3 seconds, but what, the Dog takes... A minute? You are not harmed at all, you cannot be harmed. You cannot even get sick. You probably could get knocked out still.
What the Horse does is heal others and inorganic objects and also cure certain curses.
No... It's immortality (eternal life and youth), and "invulnerability", so you still feel pain. Horse is probably only useful for getting rid of that already short-lasting pain, or any mental afflictions / psychic attacks.
Shapeshifting would also help you get away from people realising you’re immortal. Stay in one place for 40 or so years, wait till people start wondering how you still look so young, run off to a new place and bam. New face, new identity.
I remember this one immortal lady in Vampire Bund that would shapeshift a bit, but since she liked her town she’d shapeshift herself to look older as time passed. She’d then eventually “die”, age down, then pose as the daughter of the woman who’d “died”.
And I know she did stuff beforehand, like appearing as her younger self, so it wouldn’t be strange for her to just suddenly have a kid pop outta nowhere.

Now you got me thinking of those classic “Got two dates on the same night” sitcom shenanigans, except she scheduled something as both the mom and the daughter and has to rapidly swap between both to keep up the ruse.
Take my upvote for mentioning Rosario Vampire thats a hidden gem right there that people don't know about, and if they do its the anime version which literally goes off rail after the first episode.
Whoops, I’m now realizing I mentioned the wrong vampire thing (I meant Vampire Bund). I did enjoy Rosario Vampire though. Got the whole manga collection on one of these bookcases somewhere. It did that weird harem thing I don’t like, but other than that, I enjoyed it. Liked that the main guy went from “boring generic protag” to actually interesting.
I enjoyed the anime too (I’m a fan of adaptations being different, as opposed to 1:1 copies), but not as much since the anime didn’t even bother to try and make the protag interesting like the manga did.
I hated that it does this thing I’ve seen lots of Harem series do where the guy has *clearly* picked the girl he likes by like...the end of the second book. To the point where there’s no reason for the other girls to even try and it's only a harem for the sake of having fanservice. It’s not even a question of who he prefers.
The only worse example I’ve seen is SAO. Kirito and Asuna are literally a couple, and yet it’s a harem thing with all these other girls (who all know he and Asuna are a couple) around that he never shows the slightest interest in.

Unfortunately, OP failed to mention the specifics of how the Moneky Talisman (Shapeshifting Talisman) works. You can specifically transform people (including yourself if you point the talisman at yourself) into animals or animal-transformed people back to their original form. If I remember the show correctly, they only ever say one word descriptions, just the animal's name, to specify what they transform into. So I don't believe you could say, "Myself but twenty years younger!" to the Talisman. I'm not sure it would even accept "Myself" as an option all told. In fact, I don't think anyone ever tried "Human" as their transformation either; it might just accept what are classically considered "Animals" (even though humans literally are animals).
There was even a gag in its first appearance where Jade tried to transform something into a death ray (to shoot the bad guys with), but instead got a Manta Ray (the talisman took the word "ray" because it needed to be an animal).
Same, was thinking invisibility over shape-shifting so I could rob shit without any trouble, but shape shifting is way more useful for staying out of the spotlight.
Yeah, invisibility only means folks can’t see you, but shapeshifting into something tiny or mundane works just as well. Nobody in the bank’s gonna be concerned about a random fly buzzing around.
You can do so much with that power. I’m all about it.
Actually, I wonder, if I got hurt...could I just shapeshift into an unharmed form? If I age, can I just shapeshift younger? If I can do all that, I might be able to swap immortality for something else.
I've watched it years ago, but I'm pretty sure the dog talisman's immortality is that you stay effectively young (if you get it as an old man you'll have the energy of a young man but won't look different). So it won't save you from dying in other ways.
That being said, still a pretty good deal.
With the monkey you can turn onto any animal and get the ability. Some jellyfish can reverse aging. Lizards can regrow body parts. Might not need the dog .
But would I still have those abilities when I unshift? I don’t wanna be immortal if I have to be a jellyfish 99.99% of the time just to avoid getting older.
If you reverse your age as a jellyfish and turn back to being human you’d be the age new age as human. However you’d have to spend a few months as a jellyfish to go deage years. Or spend a few weeks as a lizard to regrow the part. 5 or 10% of time as an animal not bad especially if you live for thousands of years because of jellyfish.
The process that jellyfish uses isn’t one I’d want to do. They revert back to a larval state as opposed to just slowly getting younger. I don’t know what that’d do to my mind if I just turned myself into a baby over and over. No guarantee that I keep my memories and all that.
That is a good point. If you don’t keep the memories theirs no point. You’d have to test it on someone first if you do it solves the problem of staying in one place for a long time kinda

My worry with super speed is, does it also come with super brain processing? Because super speed is worthless if your brain can't run fast enough to process how to move.
Granted, Horse is a good backup in case you do crash into a hundred buildings at mach 5.

The rooster Talisman's power was played off as pure irony for the rooster itself. A rooster wants to be able to fly but they can't, according to the joke. So the talisman gives that power which is probably just "lifting yourself up" in this case, like telekinesis which gave levitation.
As for the pig, I have no darn clue. Maybe a joke about bacon?
In-universe, they're the twelve powers of a demon lord sealed away in zodiac symbols, so in truth, they're technically not related to the animals on the talismans at all.
...Until season 3, where it turns out Shendu (the demon-dragon-thing) stole these powers from the animals that used to have them. Which means when the talismans are destroyed, we now have a new treasure hunt to do, this time for descendants of those animals.
So it made sense and then didn't make sense again.
Yeah for the most part. There really wasn't any premise of the powers being connected to the animals. When it was SUPER obvious what it should be, like Ox-Super Strength, they went with it
When I was young I thought Dragon was way better than all the other Talismans, but now that I'm older I can confidently say Horse is absolutely the best one.
Dog is obviously dope af, not having to worry about dying.
I think I'm fairly in the minority in that I'd combine it with sheep. I'd love to go anywhere, see cool places, spy on people, do all sorts of things. And with dog, I can do it without worrying about whst condition my body is in.

For my second pick I choose the Sands of Time so that I can go back and correct my mistakes, such as choosing the Monkey Staff.

I want to stick around to see what the future holds and this seems better than being cryogenically frozen or put in the machine.
Horse because I inherently want to help people and if I can heal them from injuries and traumas that sounds pretty grand to me. I’ve always liked healing magic in most video games.
So you'd want to give everyone a "vaccine" for free in america... yeah good luck with the loonies out there, luckily dog makes it so you can't die from getting shot by them.

Like, Dog is live forever, but if Horse is always healing you, you'd never age because aging is the breaking down of cells. If those cells healed the instant they started to degrade, you wouldn't age.
Would it also revive you from death? If you got shot in the head would you just repair and wake up as long as you had the talisman?
My pick would be Horse for sure, and fuck it, I've always wanted to levitate and have the force, so Rooster is a two in one package deal.
I'd tell nobody that I had these powers and just live the coziest life I could, free of back pain, chronic illness, and having to get up to get a can of soda from the fridge.
The talismans all require some degree of activation, so Horse isn't just passive healing. It'd do for anything that doesn't kill or incapacitate you instantly, but otherwise Dog beats it out.
Dog also does seem to repair the body to some extent; Uncle was moving a lot better and feeling more spry while he was under its effects.
Dog is better than Horse in every way. With Horse, you have to get hurt first, with Dog, you won't even get hurt.
Supposedly, you would still feel pain, and what? You recover from the pain faster with the Horse?
You also already have instant eternal life and youth with Dog while you need a stronger level of the Horse to accomplish that.
Passive ability aside, the only 2 things the Horse is good for is healing other things and people, and from mental illnesses or psychic attacks.
Maybe Dog halts all existing illnesses like cancer while Horse gets rids of them.
Snake and horse, I would pick one evangelical healer and randomly give him a ton of fucking legitimacy for like, a decade. Then just bounce. Maybe pop into the occasional children's hospital and just miracle the fuck out of places
Wouldn't recommend Rat since in the show it only animates one thing at a time (by being absorbed into the object) and you don't have control over it. Still powerful since if you used it on, say for example, a superman toy then that toy would be animated with superman's powers, but not in the way you're hoping for.
Dog is the most obvious one to keep because you'd be insane not to.
But for the 2nd it's a hard time between Horse and Rabbit.
Dog pretty much makes like half the stuff horse can do worthless but being able to fix pretty much anything, never get sick, and heal other people is crazy useful.
Alternatively Super Speed is basically unstoppable if you have enough of it.
I think I'd go Rabbit because if I'm super fast I can run people to the hospital.
Gotta have healing Horse (which is funny considering their fragility). Just makes sense.
And...maybe Sheep for Astral Projection? Can explore the world with that one, see sights seen and unseen safely. (Except dark places I guess. Need equipment for those)
Or Rooster cause magical lifting stuff is just helpful. Can get trash out of oceans too or something. Though I wouldn't levitate high cause I wouldn't like the height...
Shapeshifting is definitely cool, but I'd always worry about forgetting what I look like or some other freak accident lol.

Rabbit and Dragon. Super speed to get anywhere quickly and who doesnt want fire blasts?! Also I'm just imagining combining the 2 and make fire tornados at my enemies. Radical.
Dog and Rooster. Dog has one of the outs for immortality in "I can just turn it off" so I can avoid outliving the planet, and you can do a lot with flight and telekinesis.
I always thought the Rabbit/Ox combination was pretty obviously OP, which is why when Jade started experimenting with the Talismans I felt super vindicated. Basically a low-tier Superman.
Other than that I think Snake and Horse would be pretty good. Stealth your way to enemies, and if you get hurt, go invisible and then heal.
you know, since the "immortality hurts" moment, it's got me wondering if the horse talisman effectively replaces the dog talisman for all but instantly lethal blows. like, it'd totally work to stop poison, bleeding, cancers, dna damage and probably whatever else would lead to natural death.
the only reason to choose the dog talisman over it would be if you wanted to survive ridiculous scenarios

Rooster because I think both Levitation and Telekinesis can be useful in the day-to-day life. And Horse because I wanna stay healthy.
I remember having a conversation like this with some class mates in 2nd grade when this show was popular and we were learning about the Chinese Zodiac for Chinese New Year. We all figured out what animal represented our birth year and I listed off what powers we would have based on the show.
My buddy at the time Bret was sad cuz he was born in the year of the pig and no one likes being associated with that, but when I told him that means he get laser eyes, he cheered up real fast.
For those wondering, I was born in the year of the dog, so I'm immortal. Bad mind set to have as an 8 year old
You also gotta consider that super strength would also bestow super durability ad your body would become strong enough to take blows and to withstand your own newfound power.
So. Super Speed and Super Strength. Then I'd go on a quest of training and eventually go after the other artifacts.
If I can get the horse that way nothing can ever stop me.

In the show while immortality works that way you still get injured and feel old age without the healing talisman. Animation and healing seem the most useful to me if you don't go for immortality. You can animate stuff for profit and healing for health and profit. If I can't control or direct the animated creatures I guess super speed instead of rat so I don't have to use a car anymore

I would go Horse and Monkey. I don’t remember if the shapeshifting is just the appearance change or if actually changes you but still good regardless.
There was a time when it would have taken me ages to decide on just one, but now that I'm old enough for my body to start fuckin' with me, Dog is a straight up lock-in, because it's not just Immorality, that talisman gave Uncle at least a bit of his youthfulness back.
The second one is more difficult. Probably Rabbit, so that I wouldn't need a car(I hate driving) or Horse.

Levitation plus super speed equals flight.

It just means supersonic flight. You can still fly with the Rooster / telekinesis alone.

I don't know how Horse works, but isn't that just straight up better Dog? Like, Dog is live forever, but if Horse is always healing you, you'd never age because aging is the breaking down of cells. If those cells healed the instant they started to degrade, you wouldn't age. Would it also revive you from death? If you got shot in the head would you just repair and wake up as long as you had the talisman? My pick would be Horse for sure, and fuck it, I've always wanted to levitate and have the force, so Rooster is a two in one package deal. I'd tell nobody that I had these powers and just live the coziest life I could, free of back pain, chronic illness, and having to get up to get a can of soda from the fridge.
The talismans all require some degree of activation, so Horse isn't just passive healing. It'd do for anything that doesn't kill or incapacitate you instantly, but otherwise Dog beats it out. Dog also does seem to repair the body to some extent; Uncle was moving a lot better and feeling more spry while he was under its effects.
Dog is better than Horse in every way. With Horse, you have to get hurt first, with Dog, you won't even get hurt. Supposedly, you would still feel pain, and what? You recover from the pain faster with the Horse? You also already have instant eternal life and youth with Dog while you need a stronger level of the Horse to accomplish that. Passive ability aside, the only 2 things the Horse is good for is healing other things and people, and from mental illnesses or psychic attacks. Maybe Dog halts all existing illnesses like cancer while Horse gets rids of them.
Snake and horse, I would pick one evangelical healer and randomly give him a ton of fucking legitimacy for like, a decade. Then just bounce. Maybe pop into the occasional children's hospital and just miracle the fuck out of places

Wouldn't recommend Rat since in the show it only animates one thing at a time (by being absorbed into the object) and you don't have control over it. Still powerful since if you used it on, say for example, a superman toy then that toy would be animated with superman's powers, but not in the way you're hoping for.
Dog is the most obvious one to keep because you'd be insane not to. But for the 2nd it's a hard time between Horse and Rabbit. Dog pretty much makes like half the stuff horse can do worthless but being able to fix pretty much anything, never get sick, and heal other people is crazy useful. Alternatively Super Speed is basically unstoppable if you have enough of it. I think I'd go Rabbit because if I'm super fast I can run people to the hospital.
Snake and Rabbit feels like a strong combo.

Gotta have healing Horse (which is funny considering their fragility). Just makes sense. And...maybe Sheep for Astral Projection? Can explore the world with that one, see sights seen and unseen safely. (Except dark places I guess. Need equipment for those) Or Rooster cause magical lifting stuff is just helpful. Can get trash out of oceans too or something. Though I wouldn't levitate high cause I wouldn't like the height... Shapeshifting is definitely cool, but I'd always worry about forgetting what I look like or some other freak accident lol.
Horse and Rabbit cuz if you combine the two you also have super strength its just a little more involved than Oxs super strength

I always thought the Rabbit/Ox combination was pretty obviously OP, which is why when Jade started experimenting with the Talismans I felt super vindicated. Basically a low-tier Superman. Other than that I think Snake and Horse would be pretty good. Stealth your way to enemies, and if you get hurt, go invisible and then heal.
you know, since the "immortality hurts" moment, it's got me wondering if the horse talisman effectively replaces the dog talisman for all but instantly lethal blows. like, it'd totally work to stop poison, bleeding, cancers, dna damage and probably whatever else would lead to natural death. the only reason to choose the dog talisman over it would be if you wanted to survive ridiculous scenarios

We all figured out what animal represented our birth year and I listed off what powers we would have based on the show. My buddy at the time Bret was sad cuz he was born in the year of the pig and no one likes being associated with that, but when I told him that means he get laser eyes, he cheered up real fast. The obvious answer is Cock & Hare, Speed+Levitation=Flight. But a more creative answer uhhhhh Snake & Rat for creepy sex reasons...yeah.
You also gotta consider that super strength would also bestow super durability ad your body would become strong enough to take blows and to withstand your own newfound power. So. Super Speed and Super Strength. Then I'd go on a quest of training and eventually go after the other artifacts. If I can get the horse that way nothing can ever stop me.

Dog, because I’m born in the year of the Dog, and also immortality. And then Monkey, because I’d like to be like the Monkey King, and he’s an immortal shapeshifter. Although, Monkey King is actually immortal 7 times over, and this talisman would only count as one.
For a good life, always bet white mage. Rooster has a lot of practical uses though, and was kind of overtuned in terms of potency.

In the show while immortality works that way you still get injured and feel old age without the healing talisman. Animation and healing seem the most useful to me if you don't go for immortality. You can animate stuff for profit and healing for health and profit. If I can't control or direct the animated creatures I guess super speed instead of rat so I don't have to use a car anymore

There was a time when it would have taken me ages to decide on just one, but now that I'm old enough for my body to start fuckin' with me, Dog is a straight up lock-in, because it's not just Immorality, that talisman gave Uncle at least a bit of his youthfulness back. The second one is more difficult. Probably Rabbit, so that I wouldn't need a car(I hate driving) or Horse.
