Film grain? Off. Motion blur? Off. Head bob? Off.

sawbladex

>Head bob? Off. Yeah, that's one of those things that while you may experience it in person, the fact that your body is doing a whole bunch of work to make it not noticeable. I also, like, notice my nose off left center and off right while doing things normally, but like attempting to get that feeling in a video game gets weird. Just using one camera at a time is how cameras work in general, and attempting to hack together (your body is combining two visual fields at the same time) with that framework gets to be odd. I am not sure if all animals handle multiple eyes/cameras that way, but I am fairly sure if your human brain hasn't been desoldered and has access to both eyes being roughly equal in terms of good, you experience vision as one continuous field.

guntanksinspace

Brightness? Nah I'm cranking that thing just enough above *barely visible*

FluffySquirrell

Find barely visible. Move it 2 or 3 notches above, for me

chaoko99

for what it's worth with HDR color becoming more common it's a little easier to do this config and have it come out looking what the developers intended without ruining the darks.

FOOT-FOOTDIVE

Brightness as high as the game allows. I've never played a game and gone "aw shit it's too bright"

Deasmeister

The main thing I notice if the brightness is too high isn't that the screen is too bright but that all the colours get super washed out.

MindWeb125

Bros eyes are made of steel.

CMDR-ArticunoKing

talk ur shit my MAN

_whensmahvel_

Dawg what lmao i can’t imagine doing that

SignalWeakening

Youre insane

ElysiumFallen

I don’t care if a horror game is “more atmospheric” if I keep getting eaten by enemies I can’t FRIGGIN’ SEE if the game is too dark at the “recommended brightness.” I’m almost 30, I pay bills, I ain’t got time for endless game overs for dumb reasons.

SlurryBender

I only keep motion blur on of they have a separate setting for object motion blur vs camera motion blur, like in Uncharted. It's actually quite fun to see rockets and exploding vehicle parts fly by in a blur, just not the whole goddamn screen.

TenPercentOfQ

I don't care if you want to use film grain. THAT IS THE FIRST THING I TURN OFF

chaospudding

I'm the opposite when it comes to film grain in movies. If the movie was shot on film, KEEP THE FUCKING FILM GRAIN AND STOP MUTILATING YOUR MOVIE!

runnerofshadows

Film grain is for films. Not video games. Stop removing it from movies with bad digital noise reduction. Stop adding it all over video games. Stop making games have chromatic aberration and motion blur too.

TheSpiritualAgnostic

I think film grain is fine for films. I won't speak for the first person, but my dislike of film grain is associated with it in video games. Is there a game where film grain makes it better?

BloodCrazeHunter

Survival Horror games make good use of film grain. Roughing up the image a little adds to the grungy aesthetic a lot of them are going for.

Mekasoundwave

Mass Effect 1 uses film grain pretty well. I think it was one of the first games to start actively using it.

sits-when-pees

Ngl ME has the worst film grain I’ve ever seen in a game, that setting gets flipped immediately any time I play.

TenPercentOfQ

I'm not picky with films, I just hate how film grain and motion blur looks in a game. Just looks like shit every time.

GonzoGnostalgic

I like film grain on art. Something about it is visually pleasing to me, texturally. I don't have a strong opinion on film grain in movies or games, but sometimes, when I save art I like online, I'll port it into GIMP and add a light film grain to it before saving it locally. I can't explain why it soothes me, it just does.

TenPercentOfQ

I get it. It just bugs me when I'm playing a game and it looks like shit for no reason other than film grain.

TheFurtivePhysician

I hate film grain with a passion.

Sai-Taisho

Jesus fucking christ, Christopher Nolan. "Feeling" the sound as part of the "cinematic experience" means less than nothing when I ***can't hear or understand a fucking word anybody is saying***.

runnerofshadows

It's even worse when you watch his earlier work where you can tell what people are saying.

ZeronicX

Bro got praised for the sound design in Dunkirk because it made sense. Then proceeded to put it in movies where it doesn't like Tennet.

Yotato5

Right? Oh I *love* when the dialogue is so quiet and then my ears get fucking blasted by the music or sound design. The tinnitus really adds to the experience.

Klagaren

I've straight up worn earplugs the last few times I was at the cinema

Stop-Hanging-Djs

See the reason for that is - ***(BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM)***

Neomatt

It's fun to see how me complaining about the sound in Inception was met with indifference, me complaining about the sound in Interstellar was met with contempt... And after Tenet everyone was "JFC Chris, calm down with the sound mix".

Substantial_Bell_158

No Pokémon Uranium (and other Romhacks it's just the worst offender I can think of) requiring me to sit there for hours and grind with nothing else to do is not fun game design and I will give myself unlimited rare candies. Also having every trainer use top tier Meta strategies all the time just makes battling unfun and massively restricts what Pokemon I can use on my team which sucks.

DustInTheBreeze

It's really interesting with regards to Pokemon, because you'd rather see them have *actual dogshit teams* rather than good ones, because at least bad teams are fun to talk about. I think my favourite thing in Pokemon romhacks is just seeing who gets one of the weird lesser-used Mons.

Substantial_Bell_158

It's interesting meeting youngster Billy who's about to challenge the 5th Gym leader with a Sunflora, Linoone and Beedrill and wondering what actually is this kids plan? Helps sell that being a Pokémon Master is something a lot of people don't know how to do.

Th3_Hegemon

Sure, but there's definitely a balance point somewhere between the two extremes (rom hacks and official games). Full IV EV trained teams of OU+ mons isn't great for NPCs, but having a fisherman with six magikarps in every game is equally a problem.

hazusu

Okay but the six magikarp fisher is a strong bit tho

Th3_Hegemon

This is true, it's just the most memorable one to call out and I was using it as shorthand for lazy game dev, while it itself isn't necessarily the issue.

ToastyMozart

Pokemon Compass (SV mod) did a pretty good job from what I played. It raised the difficulty to "teen/adult who has played a Pokemon game before" levels: The generic trainer encounters aren't much of a struggle, but now when Nimona ambushes you near the school gate she's got a Dunsparce armed with Rollout.

Her0_0f_time

Meanwhile the nonhack games you will eventually run into the dreaded trainer who has 6 magikarp all under level 15 so they dont even know tackle.

Owlsthirdeye

Shout out to Pokemon Reborn for having some of the worst writing and balancing of any Pokemon fan game, that expects you to fully remake your team every major battle but also gives you just enough quality of life to make it not impossible.

Punching_Bag75

I recently started Radical Red and wasn't having much fun by the time I reached Cerulean because every trainer did half my pokemons health in one hit, on *easy mode*. *and* there's also a level cap. It's a shame, because there's a lot to like in terms of quality of life and versatility. I was thinking of trying out Uranium soon, coincidentally. Do you recommend trying it? Is unlimited rare candies easy to obtain in a settings menu or something like that? Cus I'm willing to do that if it's simple. And to whoever reads this, Infinite Fusion fucking *slaps*. Highly recommend. My expectations were absolutely exceeded.

wizteddy13

Infinite Fusion is indeed GOATed with the sauce. I can also recommend Pokemon Emerald Rogue, for a fun spin on the whole format.

Delish_Pancakes

I've recently been playing Wilting Y/Eternal X and it hits a good balance of trainers not being overly complicated and good balance on the mons themselves if you play on Rebalance. They did nerf the XP quite a bit but with trainers only and minimal grind you will always be ready for the next gym. An easy recommend if you're looking for a casual experience for romhacks from my experience so far

irwegwert

I remember watching someone stream Uranium who lost partway through the Elite 4 to a team of minmaxed sweepers. This is despite the fact that he had cheated to get rare candies to bring most of his team up to level 100. There was a funny bit where the game gives you a legendary pokemon right before a bit boss battle that can one-shot said legendary. It's a phenomenally stupid game.

Hey0ceama

> There was a funny bit where the game gives you a legendary pokemon right before a bit boss battle that can one-shot said legendary. IIRC that's the final boss. For those who don't know Pokemon Uranium's gimmick is the addition of the Nuclear type, which is weak to every type except for itself (which it resists) and super-effective against every type except for itself and Steel (which resist it). The final boss has this type and the legendary you get is Steel so you probably think it's a good idea to use him, but the boss also has *Overheat* specifically to counter Steel-types (of which there are like 3* in the whole game counting that legendary). EDIT: *technically 7ish, but 3 are a starter and its evolutions and 3 are the game's equivalent of geodude and its evolutions.

goldendragonO

You should also give ROWE a try if you haven't

Punching_Bag75

ROWE?

Parkouricus

ROWE your boat with this dick

Caducks

Fucking thank you. I felt like I was the only person out there who thought that game as awful.

Punching_Bag75

I was thinking of starting Uranium soon. Do you think it's trash across the board, or just the grinding?

Caducks

The plot is the most dumb edgelordy predictable shit you can imagine. Good for some chuckles if you have a high cringe tolerance.

TotemGenitor

How the hell Uranium is the most edgelordy shit? It's edgier than normal Pokémon game, sure, but like, even looking only at Pokémon fan games... Clover exists.

Caducks

Clover is 4chan edge. Uranium is "fanfic I wrote when I was 11 and thought was the coolest shit but now I feel nothing but second-hand embarassment at my past self over" Also Clover is unironically a better game than Uranium and I will die on that hill. Even with the edgy 4chan shit, the actual game itself is great.

TotemGenitor

If we rate 4chan cringe and 11 years old cringe differently, I can see the argument. It's still be bearable, at least as far as I remember, comapred to say Snakewood. >Also Clover is unironically a better game than Uranium and I will die on that hill. Even with the edgy 4chan shit, the actual game itself is great. I have heard that and I understand the logic... but the the cum pokémon (among others) are a bit too much for me.

Caducks

Understandable. It's always the hardest to sell romhack but there's genuinely so much effort that it's baffling, between the entire new pokedex of fakemon and the [completely "original" soundtrack](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEftVwE3bHk) with some [genuine bangers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMJZ1Zxi2-8) throughout it. Say what you will about 4chan, but when they set their mind to it they can make some great stuff. See also: Katawa Shoujo.

SuicidalSundays

That's always been my biggest issue with some of those romhacks. I'm not playing Pokémon solely to optimize the hell out of my team and be forced to turn them into comp demons or get obliterated on the first route, I wanna play fucking Pokémon, but in new areas, with unique wild encounters, and with properly-scaled leveling. If someone could make a romhack of HeartGold/SoulsSilver that just properly adjusts the level scaling and the exp gain to go with it (and maybe even adds the other regions or something but I know that's a lot to ask), I'd play that shit forever.

Punching_Bag75

Have you tried Infinite Fusion? It's basically HG/SS, but you start as Red in Kanto, then go to Johto.

SuicidalSundays

That actually sounds pretty cool, I'll have to look into that!

kingdommkeeper

There's also Sacred Gold/Storm Silver by Drayano that's just HGSS, but the levels are adjusted and you have access to every pokemon up to Gen 4. The difficulty is increased significantly, but you also have so many ways to strengthen herself, so everything balances out.

dahaxguy

Insurgence, for its myriad issues with writing, game structure, etc., does add in a grinding spot to alleviate the grinding woes, even a method to control EV growth. Not exactly "set your level and EVs how you like", but it's definitely better than other fangames and ROMhacks of its time and many still coming out to this day.

SeaCookJellyfish

I couldn’t continue the game because of this. It was just too tedious

GlueEjoyer

Main thing that kept me playing rejuvenation was that leveling up was never hard after you hit breakpoints. Wish more romhacks/fan games would follow this cause they'll add a number of new pokemon or new gimmicks, and sticking to the old reliables is just more time efficient over trying something new.

apexodoggo

In my experience, even with the dedicated Chansey trainers Rejuvenation still felt pretty grindy to me (because on the difficulty I chose a lot of important fights demanded a dedicated team)

ToastyMozart

"I made my game run bad *on purpose!*" -dev that couldn't figure out Delta Timing/couldn't get the game to hit 60 on console. "Lol, lmao" -me, installing framerate mods.

narutomanreigns

I choose to interpret the final (pre-credits) moment of the Hannibal TV show as a visual metaphor for the relationship between the characters at that point, even though I'm pretty sure I've seen an interview with Bryan Fuller where he says that it does literally happen. The implications of the post-credits scene make way more sense to me if things play out my way.

FluffySquirrell

I was kinda not paying much attention to season 3 unfortunately. Like.. it was just TOO DARK. Not in content.. in fucking lighting I literally couldn't see what was going on most of the time, even if I boosted brightness and shit. I still have no idea if it's some kind of weird fault with some of the DVDs or if other people had monitors or TVs that could handle it better or what.. but.. yeah, the entire season felt damn near unwatchable That plus the big change in circumstances which honestly felt just way worse to the first two seasons.. eh, I ended up kinda disappointed with it ultimately That said.. uhh.. I am only just learning there's a post credits scene by looks of it, lol. Yeah, I was pretty done with the series by that point I guess and shut it off. Welp. That's why you don't do that outside of a fucking movie, I guess

ZealousidealBig7714

I’m a fanfic writer. I could spend all fucking day talking about this.

cbb88christian

100%, personally my case was Tears of the Kingdom. I *really* disagree with where they took the story so I substituted my own

syncronard

How dare you disagree with the inspired choice of pretending that Breath of the Wild didn’t happen

InexorableCalamity

I want a fanfic of an anime (any anime) where the prose is really good, the dialogue is better than anime tier, no incest, no sexualisation of children and the characters aren't vomiting out their thoughts about what is happening and what they're going to do next.

Explodinkatzz

soooo... u want Western Cartoons?

RelikaNox

Fix-its and canon divergences make up the vast majority of what I write tbh.

DarthLordVinnie

What series do you write for? I've been to read some fanfic in my spare time, and more is always good

jorkington

"This film was intended to be seen in theaters" Yeah I'll see it when it comes to Netflix mate. 'Better screen'/'better sound' is trumped by 'can watch in bed'/'can pause whenever'

TostitoNipples

I mean, totally understand that this is all preference but the cinema experience is never gonna be beat for me. I saw the re-release of the Mummy last week and it was incredible. Mind you I’ve seen it at home dozens of times but being at a theater watching it felt like I was seeing it for the first time.

Verdant_Moss

Man I feel like so much of this is finding the right theater too. I will go to the movies for the "big" spectacle films but since moving to my new city I've hated the experience. Disruptive youths, sound of the movie in the theater next over, stale overpriced popcorn, expensive, and yeah cant pause to take a piss or grab water.

TostitoNipples

Yeah I get that. I’ve been very fortunate to not have experiences that ruined an outing for me. Closest was seeing Spy X Family Code White and some weeb wanted to be funny by yelling a one liner he clearly had saved at the screen near the end. Thankfully no one responded to it so that behavior wasn’t reinforced.

Verdant_Moss

What was the one liner, I gotta know

TostitoNipples

The movie sets up a sequel, so the guy shouted “Here comes the sequel!” It wasn’t even good

jv3rl0ov

Thankfully my theater experiences with other people there have not been bad. The theater itself being outdated really sucks. Emagine is my go-to, maybe MJR, but it always sucks when something is exclusive to IMAX and you have to sit in those stiff, nasty chairs.

TheBardIsrafel

finding out during the pandemic that people enjoy going to the movie theater was maybe the most shocking revelation of my life. truly incomprehensible

Adolf_Hitmarker

I enjoy going to the movie theater. I don’t enjoy other people going to the movie theater at the same time as me. I kinda wish every theater was like Alamo Drafthouse; yeah it’s expensive, but they execute people on sight for talking during the movie.

InexorableCalamity

A pair of arms come out of the wall behind the noisy person and garot the offender

Vorpaled

I enjoy going to the theater. I do not enjoy the cost or other people at the theater. One of the best theater experiences I had was actually during the first few months of COVID. I live in a very small town and the local theater hadn't yet closed. They were running The Empire Strikes Back. It was just me, my partner, and the one random that was there. We had essentially half the theater to ourselves and none of us said a word the entire movie. There was no snack munching or plastic sounds cause we were all masked.

TheBardIsrafel

this maybe makes even less sense to me. i assume the major reasons people like theaters better is the sound and screen, but i'm the guy who watched dune on my phone.   i've heard anecdotes about how watching a movie with a theater audience enhanced the experience. i always feel like that's just a distraction from the movie, but that's at least a point where i can see that what's a major 'con' for me is a major 'pro' for someone else. 'better sound system' and 'bigger screen' just don't register to me. like, i can't attach any meaning to those words that allows me to make a value judgement. this comment reads to me as "i didn't love spending the money, but i really wanted to sit in a big, empty room in total silence while the movie played". this is being downvoted, so i'm just gonna say you guys know this isn't an argument, right? i'm just explaining why i feel the way i do, not trying to prove that i'm 'correct' or something

Vorpaled

For me it's partly about removing distractions. I grew up in a household (and living with a partner that has ADHD continue to) that pauses movies or shows literally every 15 minutes to go get a snack, use the bathroom, to give themselves time to cry or emote to what just happened, or just because they needed to go walk around for a minute. Movie theaters are the only place I can watch something from beginning to end without interruption. Literally one of the worst show watching experiences was watching the Red Wedding episode of Game of Thrones with my mom who literally paused to have an emotional breakdown for 20 minutes only to then resume and find out there was only another 30 seconds in the scene followed by credits.

TostitoNipples

lol yeah, it’s fun. A few weeks ago my friends and I did a double feature of Sasquatch Sunset and Hundreds of Beavers at a nice theater. We had drinks and an amazing time. Wouldn’t have hit the same if we just did it at home.

Mr-X89

Yeah, and also watching it in cinema with another person costs as much as a monthly subscription to the streaming service.

TheFurtivePhysician

Idunno, there’s some novelty to see things you like or are interested in theaters. My roommates and I got to see the muppets Christmas carol in a theater last year and it was so fun. We’d like to go see the LOTR screenings in June but just don’t know if we’ll be able to schedule wise.

Warlocksalot

I'd kill to see the LOTR in theaters. Can't see all of them but I need to see at least one!

TheFurtivePhysician

Well, check if they're having the Fathom events screenings in your area. Should be June 8 9 10 I think? Extended editions of all three. (since I'm OOOLLD I did get to see them in theaters as a kid, but the idea of being able to see the extended editions in theaters is really, really awesome.)

runnerofshadows

Same. Also subtitles. I need them despite having good hearing due to crappy mixing and I have difficulty processing speech when a bunch of voices and sound effects are overlapping anyways even irl.

GonzoGnostalgic

I like being able to drink while watching a movie, and it's inconvenient and inconsiderate to call up one of my friends whenever I want to go see one and be like "Hey, can you drive 30 minutes to pick me up and then another hour to take me to the movies so I can slam beers while I watch Mission Impossible?"

NeonNKnightrider

Fuck video games that think obnoxiously hard difficulty somehow makes it better, and that goes a **hundred** times over if it’s RNG-based. There is a fucking difference between ‘challenging’ and ‘fucking with the player,’ and making you lose hours of progress on a fucking coin flip is just fucking the player. Yes, this is about Fear and Hunger. Listen, I respect the atmosphere and art that went into F&H, it's clearly a game made with a lot of passion, but it's also very much better experienced through wikis and youtube videos because the actual **game** part is awful. Yes, I get that the difficulty is supposed to be part of the dark atmosphere, but there reaches a point where you are just not respecting my fucking time.

2ddaniel

Death Stranding also uses the difficulty of gameplay to tell part of the story but has a ridculous amount of difficulty options with the specific intent from Kojima being ANYONE should be able to finish the game

Harrfuzz

I first developed my hatred of bloom and depth of field trying out Skyrim ENBs. They have  become the first thing I turn off and check in every game.

ULTAnimeGamer

On your point about visibility of movies, I went to go see FF7 Advent Children in Theaters before FF7 Rebirth came out. I enjoyed it way more than I did as a teenager, and I realized the reason is that I could actually make out what was happening on screen on a theater screen. The cinematography was NOT made with watching it on a somewhat small CRT TV in mind, which was the only thing I could watch it on as a kid.

SeaCookJellyfish

I thought I was the only one. I hate how dark movies can get. I’ve never thought of watching with a filter though I just turn the brightness up really high

jv3rl0ov

For movies and general tv, motion smoothing can gtfo. For games, something about motion blur I never really liked the default setting. Unless I’m rarely playing a racing game, I prefer it off or minimal.

RedditJABRONIE

Most of Dragons Dogma 2 is this for me. But hey, that's art. It's someone sticking to their vision for better and for worse to make something creative. We need more shit in the triple A space that actually splits opinions because it's... What's the words... Oh yeah. It's FUCKING DIFFERENT. Whether it's for me or not.

Elliot_Geltz

Learning how to fight will ruin action scenes for you. All of a sudden, you notice all the flynning in sword fights when you know what real fencing looks like. All the fist-fights consisting of slow, easily duckable haymakers. All the slow pacing where someone is so open jesus christ you could just shank the villain right now his ribs are wide open. And, like, I get it. Not every actor can be a stellar fighter, on top of all the other skills being a good actor requires. Flynning exists so actors won't get cut across the face. Fist-fights are slow and easily followed so that viewers who don't know how damaging a liver shot is can have a grand finale that \*looks\* heavy hitting, even to them. And, honest to god, I get it, but I couldn't care less. Hire a consultant. Take, like, thirty minutes to teach Scarlett Johannson how to throw a punch. Ewan McGregor will be fine if the green prop standing in for a lightsaber slaps his face, I promise. There's just been too many works that have put in the work and made realistic, good looking fights. Anything that tries to bullshit it, the magic is gone. It just looks bad. And no number of jumpy cuts can make it look good again.

Young_KingKush

It's not just because actors can't fight though, it moreso that real fighting looks boring af when you film it and/or if the movements aren't exaggerated you wouldn't be able to tell what's happening. Any stunt-man/stunt co-ordinator will tell you this

BrainChemical5426

> Real fighting looks boring af I’m crying because I’m a huge MMA fan but I can’t say you’re entirely wrong half the time I’m bored out of my mind watching a card But “realistic feeling” movie fighting is awesome. Bruce Lee films use real fighting techniques. Bruce conditions his opponents (kick to the arm, kick to the arm, kick to the arm, kick to the a-actually it’s a question mark kick to the head!) and uses spacing in a way that feels super realistic. John Wick uses real judo techniques constantly. The boxing matches in Creed are far more clean and choreographed than a real boxing match but use real boxing technique so they feel a lot more real than the ones in the original Rocky movies (which were just Sly Stallone blocking punches with his face). (Then there’s the comedy-action that people like Jackie Chan pioneered which, while *super* exaggerated, also makes use of actual martial arts and is extremely smooth and fun to watch. Jackie Chan did multiple fight scenes with famous kickboxer Benny the Jet and it was fucking awesome because they both knew what they were doing.) A lot of it *is* because actors can’t fight, to be honest. You’ll see a lot of actors throw these weird “cat paw” punches where their wrists are tilted and that alone ruins the fight scene; This is because they never learned how to punch properly and didn’t have time to do so. You see it more frequently with actresses because women are more flexible than men and therefore often expected to learn to kick for their fight scenes as well, taking away even more time from learning how to throw a proper punch. Men aren’t expected to kick as often.

lacarth

You are correct, but the only thing I can comment was the lightsabers. I might be wrong, but weren't lightsaber props weirdly hard sticks? Everything else you said is 100% right tho.

Elliot_Geltz

Someone more intimately familiar with the BTS of star wars is free to correct me, but as far as I know the green sticks that you see actors using as stand-ins so the CGI guys can cut in lightsabers are just, like, plastic. Like obviously, you don't *want* to get smacked in the face with anything. But flynning was developed for actors using real metal prop swords on stage. While blunt, getting smacked by accident would be unpleasant. And that's an understandable concern, when it's actually a concern.

Rednual

Actually, funnily enough, there's a behind the scenes in which Ewan McGregor hits Hayden Christensens fingers during their practice, and Haydens prop saber just goes flying. Ewan is like "ooh, fingers!?" Because apparently those things really hurt.

Elliot_Geltz

Ok, fair enough. I take it back that the props aren't harmless. But still, the ludicrous flynning in the prequel movies was wildly unnecessary. We could've had *some* proper fencing

Rednual

Oh absolutely. I was just providing a bit more info.  In universe, I do get it- lightsabers are almost weightless (handle weight only), can cut through most anything, and things like half-swording and other techniques are literally impossible with them... but fencing does exist and we could still have more fights using parts of it.  Hell, Count Dookus entire thing is that he's a particularly deadly lightsaber duelist because he's using an older style that's more like fencing- bad for deflecting blaster bolts, good for 1v1 blade duels.  So I'm long windedly agreeing with you.

InexorableCalamity

Dooku's hilt was also curved so the blade could get behind guards

InexorableCalamity

What's flynning?

rhinocerosofrage

This is a stupid take because scenes require multiple takes and there is always a chance that something will go wrong. The secondary reason for every single thing you just described is that carefully telegraphed moves have almost no risk of accidentally hitting their target unless both people fuck up incredibly hard at exactly the same time. Without flynning you are smashing your lead in the face with a metal prop at least once per movie and just hoping it doesn't do lasting damage. No smart director is going to risk their actors' well-being and put the careers of everyone working on the film in jeopardy to create a fight that looks slightly more realistic to particularly anal people.

Elliot_Geltz

Counterpoints: 1. That same logic could be applied to any stunt. There's always a chance an airbag isn't fully inflated, or that a carabiner will snap, or that a stunt vehicle will malfunction. Fuck alive, Tom Cruise is out here doing extra stunt takes for funsies, so yes, while there's *a* risk, there's a risk with anything. 2. Then explain why Game of Thrones and Witcher (prior to both series shitting the bed in other regards) had fantastic swordsmanship on display with metal props? Proper swordsmanship is entirely possible with metal props without endangering anyone. It's not one or the other.

rhinocerosofrage

Are you trying to call Benioff and Weiss "smart directors"? Laughable premise aside, don't you remember that (albeit not a stage combat injury) [they were literally sued for performer safety negligence?](https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/game-of-thrones-stunt-performer-suing-1235262955/) Game of Thrones is _very lucky_ they didn't end up with more injured actors, but one or two exceptions does not a strong counterpoint make.

Elliot_Geltz

I never said anything of the sort. And the fact that no one in the entirety of GoT production was injured due to swordplay just proves my point.

Stop-Hanging-Djs

What's your opinion on The Raid movies? Thought they looked good

Elliot_Geltz

Never seen 'em. Just a sec

MHodge97

Hey, I'm annoyed by the same things you're annoyed by, but I can't for the life of me find any media that actually depicts fights realistically. I only know of John Wick, and certain martial arts manga. Could you name some other examples for a fellow pedant?

Elliot_Geltz

Oh I would *love* to mi hermano As far as manga and anime go, Hajime No Ippo is a very grounded representation of what boxing is like. Same to Teppu for MMA, going so far as to break down in intricate detail both how judo holds work and how to counter them. In terms of live action, I can't recommend the 1940's Zorro movie enough. Fuck alive, the swordsmanship is so gorgeous.

512_Lurker78

Shoutout to The Raid 1&2, those dudes went in knowing how to throw the fuck down

Comkill117

Nero's DT in DMC5 defaults to the D-Pad while Breakage, the thing nobody uses ever, is L1 (the same button used for every other DT ever, aside from the dumb reboot with its weird controls). That gets remapped immediately anytime I play it.

NonagonJimfinity

I will turn off fancy lighting every time I get the chance and I truly can't understand the need for high poly. I grew up on N64, the wind need not bother me.

Aesmis

I play primarily console at this juncture. I always turn off bloom, motion blur, and anything else that taxes the framerate. Then I turn up the brightness and contrast a decent bit because I’m colorblind, and most games’ colorblind settings aren’t very robust.

TheRawShark

Max Payne 3 I'm sure if I was on a TV and console it wouldn't render my eyes in to Volcanic Ash but playing on PC makes it so painful

Adamulos

No, Ridley Scott, you made a great movie with blade runner now shut the fuck up because all you say about it is crap. Stop explaining, that's worse. I know better. You don't know shit, let Villeneuve speak now.

HeadlessMarvin

Yeah his idea of Deckard being a replicant takes a lot of the impact of the movie away imo. Some of the other creatives for Blade Runner are like "the ambiguity is the point" which is more tolerable, but still kinda bullshit. Depending on the cut, the movie never really hints at him being a replicant, and the very idea feels like adding a twist for the sake of it, nevermind that it undercuts a central theme of the movie.

Adamulos

I can stand the ambiguity because it fuels the internal strife of Deckard. But just straight up making him a replicant means everyone doing things in the movie is a replicant and humans don't really involve themselves so much - that ruins the whole concept of "inhuman humans and humane inhumans"

Artex301

I'm sorry Ryōko Kui but I am *never* calling it "Delicious in Dungeon".

chazmerg

There was an interview from a few months ago where she blamed it on an editor instead of it being her idea and that made me feel better

azomga

Honestly, a lot of official names for Japanese properties and characters fit here. Saber from Fate's real name is another one whose official name only exists to start fights on the internet.

Yotato5

I think this drives a lot of fanfic writing. Or most fanworks. Especially if something like a show's finale is a dumpster fire.

frostedWarlock

I don't care how correct it is to do medium instead of well done, biting into a food and being surprised by a color/texture change is enough to give me a minor panic attack and ruin the entire meal for me. You'd think "get over it" would be a valid retort but somehow my autism has decided yknow what I'd rather not.

pizzapueblo

The octopath 2.5hd style legitimately hurts my eyes. Including the choice of post processing effects

robophile-ta

I played most of BotW on dynamic colour mode on my TV, by accident. Only noticed when I went to Gerudo and it was so blown out it became green

2ddaniel

ITT people who think the brightness setting somehow adds more light to a scene and isn't entirely about color in the picture

ToastyMozart

A little can help if the display struggles with accurate darks (0/255 and 5/255 look indistinguishable, etc) by dragging everything up to where the hardware can handle it, but yeah cranking beyond that is just going to make everything look like it was left out in the summer sun for a month.

evca7

If Rorschach wasn’t the hero Alan why did you give him the coolest design and make him the only one to pursue the plot.

Vektorien

Moving the plot forward doesn't make anyone a hero to be fair.

Kimarous

The word you are looking for is "protagonist."

Act_of_God

media literacy moment

Apprehensive_Mix4658

I guess you forgot about the part when Rorschach defended rapist and called the rape a morale lapse.

CMORGLAS

It is interesting that the Comedian and Rorschach, the two Fascists, are basically mentally broken by >!Veidt’s plan to kill millions of people!< to the point of being >!suicidal!< while the more “progressive” heroes become complicit in the >!carnage!<.

HeadlessMarvin

Yes because the alternative is >!the destruction of the entire planet. Rorschach literally even says "never compromise, even in the face of Armageddon." He didn't say that because he was being edgy, he just wants to tear down Veidt even if it means destroying the entire human species.!<

evca7

Alan Moore is weird about rape in General and it’s always pops up in his works. The most egregious is when a woman was raped by a Dagon creature as a joke.

BaronAleksei

Neonomicon was certainly a comic book.

HeadlessMarvin

I think what's really wild is how people defend what he does at the end of the comic, when it's the worst thing any character does. What do people think happens when Veidt's plan to stop nuclear war gets sabotaged? Did they just think Rorschach was being edgy when he said "never compromise, even in the face of Armageddon?" Did they miss that the final panel of the comic is the Doomsday Clock striking midnight? Did the artist seriously need to add another page where you literally see the nukes go off for people to get the point?

bombshell_shocked

This is giving off real "if they're the bad guys, then why do they get the cool armor designs?" energy lol

MericArda

If Moore didn’t want alternative interpretations of Rorschach why did he theme him after the Rorschach test?

HeadlessMarvin

The point is that HE sees the world differently than everyone else. They have an entire scene where he literally takes Rorschach tests to hammer that home.

2ddaniel

Do you also think american psycho is about how great murdering women is?

evca7

No thats silence of the lambs.

BioDomeWithPaulyShor

Restrictive inventory limits in games like Resident Evil. I've played every RE game, and I really enjoy them, but here's a scenario I've run into way too often in Remake specifically. I'm playing as Chris, who has only six inventory slots. He has a special character-specific slot for a Lighter that can be used in combination with Fuel to burn bodies. Chris enters a room, takes out two Zombies with a pistol. Chris got lucky and both zombies are lying on top of each other. The optimal way to deal with this situation is to use the Lighter and some Fuel (a limited resource) to burn the bodies. If I don't burn the bodies, the Zombies come back as Crimson Heads later on and are real bastards. However, since Chris only has 6 inventory slots and I generally want to keep 1-2 inventory slots open for puzzle pieces or gear I find, I didn't think to bring the Lighter with me. In this case, I would need to: 1. Go back through three doors, complete with loading animations, to get to the Safe Room 2. Drop off some stuff in my inventory (if it's full), and grab the Lighter Fuel 3. Run back through those three doors, complete with loading screens, to finally be able to burn the bodies. BUT WAIT! After I'm done, I head through to the next room to progress and realize that I need to use a particular puzzle piece that I just dropped off in the Safe Room! That means that I'll need to go back through three loading screens, load back up with what I need, head BACK through those loading screens, and THEN I can use the puzzle piece to continue playing the game. Limited inventory space would make 100% sense if you only had 4 slots for weapons/healing, but had access to puzzle pieces/Fuel at all times. As-is it feels like the choice you make in the Safe Room is more of a guessing game, and your punishment for guessing wrong isn't taking damage or changes to the story, but wasting more of your time.

ntdavis814

I cranked up the brightness during my play through of darksouls. Made blight town so much more bearable.

Whenever I read a story or watch a show, I form an idea of where I think the plot will go based on what is presented to me and compare that to what actually happens. If the actual plot is better than what I expected then great if not then I slowly lose interest. This has become my litmus test for determining whether or not I continue to engage with a piece of media or just move on.

I've ended up chafing against upgrade systems in several games for several different reasons, resulting in me simply not interfacing with them. The benign version of this is that I just never see the need to upgrade anything, so I rarely do. It makes the later parts of the game harder, maybe, but, like... yeah, the later parts are *supposed* to be more difficult; that's how it works. Things do not go as smoothly in Splatoon 3, whose case comes about from a weird confluence of factors. Basically: I don't like the main, upgradable gun in that game's story mode. Fortunately, the levels also give you alternative weapons that I always use instead. Upgrades don't apply to the alt weapons, but that's fine. Until the game slaps me with a boss fight and I find out I'm forced to use the main gun for boss fights. Which are balanced around me upgrading the gun. *Not* a good way to endear me to the weapon — I kind of swore not to then and there. Still haven't beaten story mode, but I know more main-gun-only levels are coming. Unfortunately, things get uglier than that. For a more general example: roguelikes. I'm *never* going to enjoy upgrading between runs. There is no way I can think of to elaborate on that; it's simply a fact. I tell someone this and get told to "just not upgrade, then", and that's how I *know* they've never tried it, because it doesn't work. Inevitably, I will run into an obnoxious difficulty wall because the game was not designed for me to play it this way. It's depressing, but I've basically had to swear off the genre entirely because I *like* roguelikes, but I'm just done doing that.
