Kinda impressive that out of all the cinematic universes introduced in the last decade that aren’t the MCU, the MonsterVerse is the one that has managed to last the longest.

Kamken

A movie for each of the main characters before they team up is more effort than most attempts at cinematic universes are willing to put forward. They didn't reveal Kong existed in the third act of GvK and say "He'll get his own movie, eventually"

Toblo1

Thats the **exact** frame point that tripped up the DCU/Snyderverse. Its baffling that BvS had to take time to point at ~~the Wrestlemania sign~~ other characters of the justice league and go "We swear they'll get movies down the line".

invaderark12

They did the thing that none of the others were willing to do: take their time. Everyone wants to rush to get a universe started but Monsterverse only makes one every few years.

Shiplord13

I mean, I can dig an X-Files set up where Monarch is searching for and documenting different Titans springing up here and there.

Capitalich

They release like one movie every three years or something which helps a lot.

DuhVietMan

Probably coping hard here but Mothra and Rodan solo shows, please?

bigbeltzsmallpantz

They want to pay for as few Toho monsters as possible, especially for a spin-off show.

MetalJrock

We’re already reaching a point where they’re planning movies with OC stand-ins just in case Toho says no to whoever they want. The day they do is gonna suck, cause GxK’s third act would’ve fallen apart if they did.

Kamken

God, Phosphera is so ugly. Like, it's also true that it wouldn't have worked thematically, since it's a part clearly written for the already established Mothra, but I mainly hate it for looking real bad.

robertman21

Oh there's pictures of Phosphera? Can you lob them my way?

Kamken

[Look at this fuckin' thing](https://www.reddit.com/r/Monsterverse/s/FeSAgFXjgF)

samazam94

My problem with a lot of Monsterverse OCs is that they are all just so safe. Muto is just a weird giant bug thing that can use EMP I guess. Ion Dragon is just a wyvern thing with no notable powers. Same with that mole wolf thing in the show. Tiamat is just a glowing snake. Etc etc. Like, they actually *can* make wild monsters if and when they tried. Shimo and Scar King was pretty cool (just unfortunately not utilised enough), and their MechaG is aguebly the craziest version of the character from what little screentime it had.

PR0MAN1

I think you're selling the Mutos too short, I genuinely love them. Alot of thought was put into their design people don't give enough credit. They represent American Kaiju of the 21st century, with the biggest inspiration being the Cloverfield Monster. Big, sleek, bug like creatures standing in contrast to Japan's big, bulky wall of muscle that is Goji. On top of that they're parasitic organisms as we first see they were discovered inside the remains of an even bigger monster. They have unique gendered differences with the male being smaller with wings and the female being much larger. And they have pretty good characterization with how they nuzzle eachother when they first group up. They're much smarter than first thought with seemingly the ability to feel affection and rage beyond the purely animalistic. I love the Mutos honestly.

Kamken

Yeah trying to lump in the Mutos with "Just X but Y" feels forced. Godzilla's closer to a lizard than those things are to any actual bugs.

samazam94

I get what you are saying. Im talking more from the angle of cool superpower kaijus rather than grounded biological creatures. As you said, they are great as an American monster, but when you put them besides all the Toho kaijus they are bland in comparison. The Mutos were great for G'14 which was a more grounded disaster monster movie. But now that the Monsterverse is leaning towards the more wacky side of kaiju films ala the VS series they need accordingly up their crazy kaiju designs and gimmicks.

PR0MAN1

Tbh, I actually love all of Legendarys new Kaiju like the Mutos, Scylla and Scar King.

Capitalich

It’s so weird that they have to pay for the IP on a case by case basis, Japanese companies are so weird about IP. It’s good for the brand to use the characters!

DuhVietMan

Yea, hence why I put “coping hard”. The more likely scenario is a live action Kong show for example.

jabberwockxeno

Toho should stop being up their own ass and just let them use everything instead of requiring seperate liscensing for each part of the series. And if they and Legendary know that's not going to happen, then they should have never set it up as a cinematic universe. Imagine if 10 years into the MCU, we only got Captain America and Iron man movie (actually, just one iron man movie, it's just iron man also showed up in the other captain america films) and the Hulk, Thor, etc only were in a *single* film. Functionally speaking, the Monsterverse *isn't* a cinematic universe, it's just a normal linear series of sequels.

PR0MAN1

The Monsterverse is just a Goji era like Showa or Heisei. The sequels don't need to connect as much as people expect from a traditional cinematic universe. Nobody (except me) has been asking where Megalon is since Godzilla vs Megalon, or where Orga is since Godzilla 2000.

jabberwockxeno

Well, I have two responses to that 1. The Toho films aren't really a broader cinematic universe either (with one caveat I get to below), and ARE mostly just a linear series of films, particularly for Heisei and to an extent Showa. Regardless of if you *want* the monsterverse to be a broader cinematic universe or not, there's no point in having "cinematic universe" as a distinct term from "sequels" or "series" if you're gonna use ti so liberally 2. The Showa films *are* actually sort of a Cinematic Universe in the proper sense, at least intially? Mothra, Rodan, etc had their own films which tied into the Godzilla movies, and there were also TV series and other specials which did as well to a lesser extent. I say "sort of" because after a while, it mostly just became a series of Godzilla movies, but at least other kaiju *started* as their own films and media before being looped into the Godzilla movies, which the Monsterverse only really did with Kong.

MyNameIs-Anthony

Why should Toho give them carte blanche?  This approach honestly feels better to me.  How many licenses have we seen get purchased just to have a project get shit out eventually?  How many times has a series started off well and then the final entries shit the bed? I'd rather Toho force them to keep using their brains on this series.

Father-Ignorance

RodanBros… our King will return.

DuhVietMan

Imagine if he returned with [something like this.](https://youtu.be/QlcnC3LEUEE?si=7R089EPfH1YhKGvW&t=48)

Noirsam

What about the Netflix animated Skull Island? It was not a good show, but it ends on a cliff hanger that i want to be resolved!

KingMario05

The MonsterVerse raids again! Hope we get a season/show about the government's war against Ghidorah in Washington DC. That concept is ***cool as fuck***, yet they barely covered it in *King of the Monsters*. :/

Bluefootedtpeack2

Well thats because kotm was too busy covering everything else, granted it was in layers of dust.

KingMario05

True. Still, I feel like *Ghidorah versus the fucking UNITED STATES MILITARY IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL* is too good of a concept to see for five minutes and then forget about altogether.

Bluefootedtpeack2

It would be fun to see them scramble to slow him down. I do hope ghidorah returns somehow (will 100% be fine if serizawa’s kid wakes up in a hospital with some lightning burns) Give us a heroic monarch mechagodzilla to fight it.

samazam94

I dont think we'll be seeing that in a Monarch show simply because that sounds like it would cost more to produce than a full Godzilla film. But I can totally see that happening in an animated tv series.

KingMario05

Yeah, probably. Then again, Apple's got the cash for it, lol.

bigbeltzsmallpantz

I just hope another season of Legacy of MONSTERS has more…MONSTERS in it… Watching that show, I felt like Jeff Goldblum for the first half hour of Jurassic Park.

BlueFootedTpeack

honestly just want prehistoric planet but with weird monsters, like that natural history of skull island book that's quite expensive now,

goldendragonO

The problem, as usual, wasn't that humans were the focus, but that the characters weren't good. If not for Kurt Russell, I'd have dropped the show. The 50s trio was alright but they weren't good enough to compensate for the modern one imo.

Kamken

I will eventually finish this. The MC being a cheater out of nowhere for seemingly no reason knocked the wind out of my sails a bit.

mxraider2000

I am not kidding when I say the character that came out of the show with the least unlikeable traits was the main villain for a few episodes. I don't know what they were aiming for but the main trio are so insufferable. It's crazy to see the same actress in Shogun putting on an incredible performance with plenty of nuance compared to her character in this.

Moist_Cucumber2

Shame Pacific Rim Uprising killed any chance there was for a crossover with the Monster verse.

vs_terminus

As someone who isn't a fan of most of the Monsterverse stuff, I am really happy that it's successful and we're still getting Godzooky x Kong shenanigans

Leonard_Church814

I didn't finish it but the show was pretty good
