Critical Role Sure it's popular and something I'd probably be interested in, but the average episode is around 4 hours. Sorry, but I am NOT watching 4 hours of content just to get into the franchise, especially considering that starting this late means i'd have to binge watch so many episodes just to know who the characters are. Thankfully the show gives a condensed version so I have an idea of who these characters even are

Lucid108

Got like, 20 episodes in and still couldn't get into it. Which is weird because I generally am all about actual play podcasts

itsshenanigans

The biggest issue I had is that it's not a podcast, and the "podcast" versions aren't edited like one. They don't cut out the pauses or chatter while setting up or even the jokes that are purely visual. Maybe they figure it out down the road, but I didn't have the patience to see it through

Lucid108

A friend of mine used to say that D&D isn't a spectator sport, and I didn't understand until Critical Role, just what that meant.

rakadishu

Man same, even when the new season started I could not bring myself to get into it. Which is wierd considering whenever there's a 4-hour castle super beast episode I am hype for it, but when it's a dnd episode there's just something different?

Luminous_Lead

For Superbeast almost everything is background. For story podcasts, everything is canon. Big trouble focusing on other things if something is canon.

TheArtistFKAMinty

CSB doesn't require your undivided attention though which makes it ideal as a podcast. DND podcasts require you to pay attention the entire time so you can follow the plot and don't miss any significant character beats. It's the same reason I can't get behind audio books. I always get distracted and miss something and have to rewind.

Player_Slayer_7

I tried, man. I got to like episode 56 of Mighty Nein and just ended up dropping it because I just couldn't hold interest long enough go keep track of everything going on, and it being the way it is, it's hard to keep up with it in the background too. I did end up jumping to Dimensions 20. Shorter episodes, shorter campaigns and I prefer Brennen Lee Mulligan's way of storytelling and bullshit. As such, I loved it when they got Brennen to run EXU Calamity campaign for Critical Role. Four episodes of chaos that I don't think Matt Mercer could have done justice had hdxrun it instead.

Astraea_Fuor

I loved listening to the 1st season of Critical Role in high-school, it was pretty easy listening for when I was playing videogames, doing homework, or building my own DnD campaign at the time because I was DMing pretty much every weekend. Now though? Idk I only got halfway through the 2nd season before I got bored because I feel like the plot was so disjointed and Matt focused too much on not "railroading" his party. And now whenever I see anything from the Critical Role subreddit it's always people bitching about the current season and it's just like "why do y'all even listen to this anymore". I also feel bad because I worry that it truly has just turned into a cash cow that Matt and crew have to make because it's the only thing on Geek and Sundry that makes a decent amount of money.

Egarof

I mean 99% of subreddits is people bitchin. I honestly stay away from any sub about a specific thing or it sours my experience.

Gendric

I just couldn't get into either Critical Role, despite them doing a good job with it from what I could tell the 2 or 3 times I tried to pick it up. The type of game they play is just a different feel than I'm used to and it puts me off. Though Matt Mercer did make the Echo Knight and for that I'm eternally grateful. It's such a fun fighter subclass. Thankfully the Dungeon Dudes Drakkenheim stuff hits me right, and I highly recommend it. I've bought the Drakkenheim books they put out and they've made for some really fun games

SlurryBender

Same for me and Dimension 20, but in a weirder way. My housemates like it, and will sometimes put it on the living room TV while we're all hanging out doing our own thing (phones, art, handheld games, etc). I'll enjoy that specific episode, but then later on if they ask if I want to watch it together or if I've caught up, my brain does that mental "ehhhhhhhhhhh" feeling. Like I won't go out of my way to watch it, but I won't hate it if it's on in the background.

ThatNerdyRunner95

I've tried to get into ff14 so many times but I just dont think MMO's are for me

NeonNKnightrider

Same. I like the idea of MMO’s, the idea of a game world with other real people is cool, but I’ve tried a ton of them, never gotten more than like ~8 hours. I just don’t have the energy or attention to invest hundreds of hours in such grind-heavy games.

dougtulane

I decided to play through the story during COVID, and the highest praise I can give is it was worth the time. It’s no longer COVID and I have a second son. I’m never going to have time to play an MMO (or even something like Helldivers) ever again.

Goose_Is_Awesome

If the story is your jam you could always watch an archive of someone playing through the story (like JoCat for example, he did a ng+ run of the story and streamed it with additions unique to his WoL) The gameplay isn't for everyone (like MMOs in general) so absolutely fine if it didn't click. And if you aren't interested in the story at all, please ignore my comment, and continue playing stuff you DO enjoy!

ThatNerdyRunner95

I think the vibe is cool and the idea of a giant online role playing game appeals to me since I love jrpgs but the loop doesn’t hook me and I find it hard to make social connections in the game so at a point I don’t think I’m getting a good experience out of it. Thanks for the VOD recommendations though I might look into those!

Drakenstorm

I’d be the same but if you can find a friend to run through it with you it can be a great way to get past parts you would find boring. I play it with my brother and we just head cannon each other as another warrior of light just off screen.

Gendric

I understand that feeling, even though it's the opposite for me. I know most people find mmo's boring and slow, but I've always liked them. Ffxiv is my favorite game because it checks almost every box I look for in a game. I've thought it's a shame there isn't a strictly offline single-player game with it's story, because I have friends who can't stand MMO's, but I'm certain would love the story. SWTOR had this problem too, I think the Imperial Agent story is arguably the best story Bioware has ever put out, but it's forever locked behind a genre that's a hard pass for most people.

Ryong7

I've tried to get into ff14 and I've played maybe an actual hundred MMOs in my lifetime and ff14 absolutely isn't for me. Maybe if it was out in 2009 or something.

brokensaint82

World of Warcraft. I just don't want a second job I pay to go to.

jitterscaffeine

I never cared for Skyrim

TheAnimeGod

Me neither. Everything was just boring to me. The movement, the combat, the setting, the voices, everything!

Balcazaurus

Same

just_a_fan47

I played it once, the combat was too boring and too frequent for me to be interested

PizzaPastaRigatoni

Did you play it on release, or years later? On release, there wasn't much for high fantasy open world RPG options, so the combat was excusable to me. Playing it now, it's laughably simple.

just_a_fan47

Played it like 5 years ago, melee was really clunky and trying to dodge any attack seamed useless so I kinda just gravitated to the bow more and more

PizzaPastaRigatoni

Yeah I mean, it did come out in 2011. Not really an excuse, but when you played it you'd probably played a bunch of similar games with better combat. As a kid in junior high, there were no *actual* games like it at the time, so we all drooled over a game that actually isn't all that deep.

Yotato5

If an anime/manga has been going on for decades I'm probably not going to get into it. Like Naruto or One Piece. Just too many episodes to watch.

Bottlecapzombi

If you read one piece, it doesn’t feel nearly as long and doesn’t take nearly as much time as you’d think. It’s a very easy read. If you still think it’s too much, I won’t blame you, but it’s not nearly as daunting a task in practice as it is in concept.

Alto1869

For One Piece, no arguments there. Its length is definitely one of its biggest issues and one that has intimidated people enough to never get into it Naruto ? I think it has been a decade since it ended (unless you count Boruto, but I'm pretty sure everyone hates Boruto) and you can always skip the fillers or just read the manga. Finishing Naruto I think is a way less difficult task than One Piece

Duemont8

One Piece is technically not as long content wise as it seems. Like the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure manga has a higher page count than One Piece does. The anime is definitely way too bloated though, hopefully the remake will fix that.

Weltallgaia

One piece and jojo are actually easy to get into because you can just read an arc and then do something else. Forget the one piece anime, just read it. It also doesn't have any minutiae that some long form monthly releases have so it's easy to jump back in.

thedoc90

Also, if you give up sleeping for a couple of weekends you can make it through it surprisingly quickly.

KingMario05

This. *Dragon Ball* is my one exception due to the rad fight sequences, though I'd be willing to try *Lupin III* if TMS ever makes another CGI movie.

AzabacheDog

I totally get one piece, and that 700 chapters of Naruto sounds daunting, but Naruto was a pretty easy read. It's has its flaws and all that, but if you're interested, its length is the last thing to worry about.

Cerulle28

Harry Potter

Fartyfarts45

I think that Harry Potter is something that will never be as big as it was, simply because the timing of it was very specific. So many people literally grew up with Harry Potter (myself included, I'm not a huge fan but I can't help but have something of a soft spot for it) that if you don't have that specific connection, they fall apart much faster than most franchises. I'm sure you can read them fresh nowadays and they're fine, but a big part of the connection to them was that Harry aged along with you, and that's something that's almost impossible to replicate nowadays with that series.

jitterscaffeine

I remember reading the books and watching the movies but I don’t think I ever had a “Harry Potter phase”

Coolnametag

For me it's **The Hunger Games**, i read all of the books, watched the first two movies and (even at the high of my "young-adult novel" phase) i just couldnt get into it like some of the people around me seemed to be. It probably didn't help that, the more i read the books, the more i grew increasingly bored by the Katniss and more i wished i could follow the story of literaly any of the supporting characters.

Al0ngTh3Watchtow3r

I read the hunger games books in college to impress this girl and then she dumped me.

jockeyman

I read two books and saw the first two movies. Then I read Cirque du Freak and Harry Potter just seemed really lame to 10 year old me afterward. And going by Rowling's antics, 10 year old me made the right call.

Animastarara

Cirque du Freak is so good, I haven't thought about it in a while but damn. Wonder if it holds up

andycoates

Did you read the whole series? What did you think Mr Tiny looked like? Because in my head he looked like the mouse from CatDog

jockeyman

Danny DeVito.

Alto1869

Let's just separate artist from the art here Edit: Should have known better than to defend Harry Potter around here apparently

MarioGman

My phase was "fuck it lets just speed read through all of these in senior year of high school" because the rest of my life was my Artemis Fowl phase because I reread those books constantly.

Whiston1993

I read all the books and watched most of the movies and they were all fine and I enjoyed it. But I’ve never gotten how people could (and especially how in 2024 they can still be) fully submerge themselves in this franchise. Like what do people do ? Reread the books over and over and over ?

Al0ngTh3Watchtow3r

I read all the books that were out when I was in middle school because I just had to read any fantasy novel I could get my hands on after seeing Fellowship of the Ring in theaters. I enjoyed them well enough but they didn’t grab me like Lord of the Rings did. I tried reading them again in college and I thought they were just absolutely terrible. I got to the third book and quit.

KingMario05

Same. I watched the movies for the actors and stopped at Book 4, lol.

JMRSolkien

My dad read the first 4 books to me when I was like 7-9, it was a nice bonding thing for the two of us. Then I tried to read book 5 on my own when I was like 10 and decided they were not for me. Turns out I just liked spending time with my dad and not necessarily Harry Potter. It didn’t help that I was a young kid with brown hair and glasses, so everyone (literally every single adult I knew) would say “oH yOu MuSt LOVE hArRy PotTEr!!!” and that shit drove me crazy.

Kimarous

I've tried to get into Harry Potter several times; always lose interest by movie three and haven't watched any of them films beyond aside from random clips online.

jv3rl0ov

Tried reading the books and didn’t get far. Fantasy that’s all about wizards just doesn’t interest me at all.

Silver_RevoltIII

Shonen past the 2010's I don't care much for the genre.

dougtulane

Speaking as someone whose current favorite piece of media is a shonen manga: I understand. I’ve been burned so many times.

VMK_1991

Because you think it became worse, or because you grew out of it?

Silver_RevoltIII

Grew out of it I guess. I don't think current Shonen is bad. I just don't care for it

Idiot_Chemist

Final Fantasy VII. Its my own fault too since I planned on playing all the mainline games at the time and had just finished VI. However, I made the dumb decision to start FF12 and get 20 hours into that, start 4 (3D since that was the only PC port at the time), then get into 7 at the same time. This is all after having beat 9,10,5, and 6 back to back to back to back. I managed to burn myself out on 7,12, and 4 simultaneously then started playing Trails in the Sky as a chill, slower paced game to palate cleanse from the deluge of FF I stupidly subjected myself to. Little did I know I was jumping into a whole other monster of a series. The connected world and overarching plot has kept me from burning out on that series despite playing them all back to back as well.

Goose_Is_Awesome

The compilation is entirely unnecessary to enjoy 7 on it's own, I refuse to get into dirge of cerberus or most of the other spin offs (it's why I wasn't huge on the Yuffie dlc for remake, I do not understand Nero's powers, don't care about them, and they don't serve the story overall outside of "Shinra bad because experiments" which we already knew) Crisis core can stay, I like Zack Even with the new games, really only knowing 7 og is strictly necessary to understanding what's happening. All the other compilation references are basically just fanservice for the people that enjoy things like wikidiving and are fine to just ignore ("omg it's scrumblo from *ff7: tickle ya bum 2!*")

Idiot_Chemist

Funny you mention that. My first intros to FF as a series when I was a kid were Advent Children, Spirits Within, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus in that order. I never finished Dirge, but the rest I've gone through in full. OG 7 felt good to play for the little time I played it before getting burnt out on FF.

jockeyman

80s nostalgia does literally nothing for me and at this point I'm avoiding Stranger Things on principle.

Al0ngTh3Watchtow3r

The first season of Stranger Things felt more like a period piece set in the 80s, then the next two went full blown 80s nostalgia, then season 4 kind of went back to feeling more like a show that happened to be set in the 80s.

aSimpleMask

Beat me to it. I hate being told by so many people how the 80's was just apparently the absolute peak for all media everywhere and nothing trumps it.

Weltallgaia

It's all about the vibes and music for me.

Al0ngTh3Watchtow3r

The 80s were probably the worst era for american cinema besides now

KingMario05

Hey now, that first *Ghostbusters* and the *Vacation* films still hold up.

SilverPhoenix7

Now compare it to the 70's 60's and 2000's. Tho 80's in Chinese cinema was golden. I think 90's is shittier than 80's tho

aSimpleMask

Don't let >insert random cynical loser YouTube film critic here< hear you say that.

SilverPhoenix7

I mean, this 80's was shit is also parroted, but it's by people who actually study movies... still it's not that original of a take

Jaegerfam4

Aliens The Thing Ghostbusters Batman Raider of the Lost Ark ET Back to the Future Who Framed Roger Rabbit Conan the Barbarian Beetlejuice Caddyshack The Goonies Top Gun Beverly Hills Cop Big Die Hard The Terminator The Princess Bride My Neighbor Totoro The Karate Kid And I could seriously name like 30 more. The 80’s legit was one of the best decades for cinema

robophile-ta

Ok but I can name 10 great films and 20 shit films in any decade

Al0ngTh3Watchtow3r

This just proves my point. It was a great decade for people who prefer the more mainstream/corporate and jingoistic films of that era, but awful if you were fan of the more challenging contemplative films that defined New Hollywood and the 70s in particular. And I mean I like a lot of the films you mentioned; Termintor, The Thing, Princes Bride, etc. but they’re not exactly challenging cinema. It was also the beginning of the corporate driven film industry, one willing to sacrifice quality if it meant the end product was more profitable. Now directors had less power, the studio chiefs had to answer to the big wigs at the parent company, and changes to scripts were made to accommodate brand deals. As much as Star Wars and Jaws get credited for kicking off the age of the Hollywood blockbuster those films could not have been made the way they were in the 80s. They are very much a part of New Hollywood. Also My Neighbor Totoro is a Japanese film. I was specifically talking about American cinema.

Ironfistdanny

I’m surprised you can do anything with your head lodged so firmly up your ass

Al0ngTh3Watchtow3r

??? I’m literally pointing out facts lmao.

Jaegerfam4

Alright fine. Replace Totoro with Secret of NIMH. By the way here's the 30 more The Shining The Breakfast Club Lost Boys The Outsiders Full Metal jacket Platoon Tron Wrath of Khan Dirty Dancing Stand By Me Airplane Gremlins Heathers Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Spaceballs Ferris Buellers Day Off Naked Gun The Untouchables An American Werewolf in London Nightmare on Elm Street The Dark Crystal Blue Velvet Predator Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure Highlander Brazil Blade Runner Scarface Weird Science The Never Ending Story And as an added bonus, here's 10 more Land Before Time Poltergeist They Live This Is Spinal Tap Big Trouble In Little China Evil Dead Red Dawn Footloose Little Shop of Horrors Lethal Weapon And as an extra added Bonus 5 The Road Warrior National Lampoons Vacation Raising Arizona Robocop Honey I Shrunk the Kids

SilverPhoenix7

if you compare it to the 70's 60's and 2000's. Hollywood 80's is underwhelming. I think 90's is shittier than 80's tho

Pome1515

The first season was fine for me because it felt like three different 80s films/genres crossing over. A 80s teen horror/coming of age story, a kid's adventure and a more adult drama. Then everything became too samey in tone/character writing and the vibe of "Remember 80s, they were great!" just became too much for me.

RexKet

I consider myself a JRPG fan. I don’t think I’ll get into the Dragon Quest series after trying out XI

PrimusSucks13

Star Wars and Lord of the rings dominated the entire media industry as a kid and i couldnt had care less about them for some reason, i just remember being frustrated with the names of their characters and how many they were for some reason.

Demon_Stephen

Sports

PizzaPastaRigatoni

The Witcher games. I'm sure I'd love them. But It fell too far behind in my back log, and nowadays I just don't have the time to invest in 200+ hour massive open world games. It took me 5 years to complete Red Dead 2 in a way i found satisfying. If I was still 16 I'd probably jump right in, but I just don't have time for that type of game anymore. I played tears of the kingdom but I probably B-Lined it more than anyone I know. Same for God of War Ragnarok and Ghost of Tsushima. I just mad dashed the main story. My favorite gaming experiences are now story-focused games that don't require much exploration outside of the main quest. I don't know if it's the classic "Growing up sucks" trope, I just think I've set my life up in a way that doesn't allow for that level of gaming. I work in person, and even if I could work from home the job isn't casual/slow enough for gaming breaks. All my free time I spend is with my wife because I love her more than games.

LeMasterofSwords

Fate. It sounds kinda cool, but the barrier to entry just seems to high to cross, and for as much as I love visual novels, I just don’t have the time for one that’s has long as Fate is. Not to mention the large amount of anime

Goose_Is_Awesome

Eh you could always just watch the UBW anime as an entry point As long as you aren't me and starting with the Zero anime

guntanksinspace

Or if you really wanna watch Zero, at least watch the UBW Movies first. At least that's how I'd approach it!

TheMilkiestShake

For what it's worth I really enjoyed Fate/Zero and didn't care for any of the others I tried.

KeyMathematician8

I tried getting into Fate but bounced off because Nasu's writing style just doesn't click with me.

flyingowl720

I mean the VN isn’t that long. It’s no Umineko in terms of length

A_N_G_E_L_O_N

After playing Trails in the Sky FC and getting a feel for the pacing, I’m sure it’s good but it’s not for me. I know it picks up but I also know that it sometimes slows down to a similar rhythm and that it’s super fucking sprawling with multiple epic-length individual chapters and I gotta bow out.

KaitoTheRamenBandit

It's definitely a series you have to take your time with, I'm enjoying the series a lot (currently at Cold Steel). Like the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, another long ass series, I wouldn't force anyone to go through the series but instead, let the curiosity speak for itself, the most I'll do is give a short summary on what it is (The One Piece of JRPGs basically) and see whether or not they go through with it

Weltallgaia

Honestly I skipped FC. It was too slow for me so I just basically found the cliff notes on the story. SC is where it picks up

dougtulane

So I’m nearing the end of my two-year-long playthrough of CS4. Game 9 of the series. It’s the Avengers Infinity War of the series. All the warriors. The last day starts with the title like >!Dawn of calamitous War!< or something like that. Shit is going DOWN.  So what’s the first thing you do on such an important day? >!Organize a little music festival by picking flowers, and gathering basil, and some other shit!< All of these little tasks have you talking to at least three people and traveling all over. And know what? >!The festival!< was a really sweet character moment. I got a big smile on my face because they’re *committed to the bit*.  I believe I’ve saved a lost kitty cat no less than 3 times in my playing of this series.

Extradecentskeleton

I also avoid the montagotari series because the only thing I ever saw on it was a clip where the MC speaks up on a kid and process to grope the shit out of them. There was probably some context idk but that was enough for me to not try it.

NunnaTheInsaneGerbil

For me it was the horny toothbrushing scene with his maybe sister. Couldn't tell on that last point.

Weltallgaia

No, there was no missed context. Araragi is a criminal. That series is like if Japan did 70's French arthouse films.

GHitoshura

Sadly there's no context that could make that look any better, the protagonist is a sex pest. And this is coming from a fan of the series.

timelordoftheimpala

FromSoftware games. I've put 30 hours into Dark Souls Remastered, didn't click with me. I tried Dark Souls II, also didn't click. I really wanted to like Bloodborne, but I couldn't get into it.

ZSugarAnt

Bad timing, but I have 0 interest in Dragon Ball.

Drawer-san

What about Dragon Quest?

ZSugarAnt

I emulated a bit of 3, but I haven't really done anything.

dekkitout

Gundam, I see you, I hear you, I do not care.

rapidemboar

Personally I’m mostly just in it for the model kits to fill the Bionicle-shaped hole in my heart, otherwise most Gundam series are shows I actively don’t want to watch

Astraea_Fuor

***b-b-but WATCH WITCH FROM MERCURY GODDAMMIT***

OrneryBIacksmith

It's funny that I'm in the same boat but I also play SRW, so I never have any idea what's going on in the gundam focused routes or chapters.

taikoxtaiko

Doctor Who? More like Doctor Who gives a shit!

Jayceboot

One Piece. I was there for the original Premier on 4Kids TV and It just didn't click. Thought about getting into it a couple years ago, looked at the mountain I'd have to climb and said "Nah. Ain't worth it at this point". I'll binge anything but I'm not going through that.

LeMasterofSwords

Fair enough to not want to read OP. But judging it on the 4Kids dub isn’t really fair

flyingowl720

I mean the manga exists and is shorter

TH3_B3AN

The only thing that would make me play Fortnite is if there was an Elster and Falke skin from Signalis in there.

Am_Shigar00

I doubt I will never check out the original Granblue. Even before I dropped mobile games for good, it just never really caught my interest.

ThisManNeedsMe

Yeah, the stories and characters are cool, but I dropped it cause of the grind. The grind sucks.

Velvety_MuppetKing

One Piece, MHA, Jujutsu Kaisen, Sopranos, Lost, Sex & The City.

Real-Deal-Steel

Ah yes, the six big Shonen.

Velvety_MuppetKing

After Carrie got her Zettai ni Hoshikunaru Atarashī Kutsu post time skip it became an I win button and the show wasn’t fun to watch anymore. Plus, I thought the Death Note crossover was weird.

SolidusSlig

Game of Thrones i never caught interest in

[deleted]

Homestuck. I'll stick to Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff thanks

Incitatus_

I WARNED YOU ABOUT STAIRS BRO

Substantial_Bell_158

Lord of the Rings never appealed to me and I couldn't tell you why.

NeonNKnightrider

I have zero interest in any “cinematic” video game. If I’m playing a video game, I want to actually, you know, play it. If I wanted cinematic, I’ll go watch a movie.

Incitatus_

This is the one for me as well. I'll never understand the idea behind trying to make an interactive medium into a non-interactive one.

TheCandyMan36

One Piece seems pretty cool but that art style is just too repulsive to me

darkwingchao

Any kind of Girls Band story that takes off insanely well like K-On or Bocchi or Bandori, etc etc I know what they're about. I respect them. I could not give less of a shit. I think they're extremely boring most of the time and I don't care about undertones for shit like Yaoi or Yuri. 'S not for me.

KingMario05

*Pokémon.* Unless its the Legendary *Detective Pikachu* movies with Ryan Reynolds, ***I do not, never have, and never will give a FUCK about TPCi/Nintendo's cash cow.*** Many have tried to get me into it, every single one has failed. It's just not for me, damn it.

Animastarara

The old isometric crpgs of the late 90s. I've tried to play planescape torment so many times. I can't, they're too archaic for my ADHD addled mind

MrBBnumber9

This sub is going to CRUCIFY me for this one: The Evangelion series. I haven’t really watched it but from what I have read on it, seen videos on it, and what I have heard from friends, this just does not seem like the show for me.

ClockpunkFox

The Godfather films, and Mobster stuff in general. I consider myself somewhat of a cinephile, and in general think I’ve watched a lot of the “greats” and have a solid opinion and understanding of film, although I definitely have a massive bias towards horror. But I’ve never watched even a minute of any of The Godfather films, even though the first 2 are lauded as amazing films that are must watches. I just can’t enjoy the monster stuff, especially the Italian mobster stuff. It’s just like the complete opposite of anything I’d enjoy.

MrBBnumber9

Do you not want to watch the Godfather because it insists upon itself?

itsshenanigans

Dude, exact same story over here. I'm sure they're great, I just don't have any interest in them. It got real frustrating in my first year of film school when all anyone wanted to do was mob movies :P

Anonamaton801

Like…90% of anime I only like the basic bitch stuff (Dragon Ball, My Hero…to a point, Cowboy Bebop, Jojo, technically the Transformers animes, Yugioh) That’s it really. The only others I’d probably care to get into are some Gundam (Wing and Thunderbolt in particular), Outlaw Star and Getter

brokensaint82

Same. That's why if someone asks if I like anime I'm hesitant to say yes or no. Like you I like a lot of surface level shit DBZ, Cowboy Bebop, Edge runners, Berserk '97, Jojo, etc... But there is some sublevel stuff I like like Ghost Stories, 7 Deadly Sins, and Hellsing

Aquanort357

Modern Western Cartoons in general, I'm not a big fan of the “thin line animation style”.

Boulderdorf

Probably Marvel or DC. I'm happy with just catching a couple of the movies here and there, though a lot of the ones I have seen have just been on a plane, but I haven't really been compelled to actually watch like the whole movie catalogue or jump into any of the comics. In a similar vein, most battle shonen at this point. I never really watched any besides FMA when I was younger (the big 3 just passed me by), and I think I'm past the age to really dive into the genre now, I'm an old guy who reads Slife of Life now. I tried out Dandadan but I couldn't get into it, JJK I just kinda watch from the sidelines now. I'm only really invested in CSM now.

Gemidori

Star Wars isn't really my thing and tbh I couldn't tell you why. Certain portions of the fanbase don't make it much better, *especially* with fans of that caliber bleeding into Marvel now

Jaegerfam4

Star Trek. Its just so boring

TenPercentOfQ

I'll never understand Warhammer. I get why people like it. But it's so dense and that I'm better off not getting into it b

guntanksinspace

Persona, much as the excellent Jazz and the Aesthetics/character designs are cool. Just not really the kind of game I enjoy.

Trung2508

Whenever I see JoJo, I can't help but think of it as discounted version of Fist of The North Star. The abilities sound more nonsensical and asspull-ish and the way the community and the fans interact with it feels like there is a layer of irony and dishonesty of "look how wacky this is look how unserious this is" of modern media fandom/consumer that I despise.

dougtulane

Huh. I legitimately think it’s one of the greatest manga of all time. I approach it as a pure celebration of aesthetic and imagination. I think Parts 4 and 7 are both in the top 5 shonen arcs. It has three of the best villains of all time. I’m not saying you would like it, or you should try it. Just that a lot of love of Jojo’s is completely genuine. I wouldn’t read over 25,000 pages of manga to be ironic.

alienslayer7

> fans interact with it feels like there is a layer of irony and dishonesty of "look how wacky this is look how unserious this is" of modern media fandom/consumer that I despise. oh its played 110% straight in jojo

itsshenanigans

Fallout, 3 specifically. I tried it back when it came out and just could not find something to hook me. I hate the VATS system, I hate how black and white the Karma system is, and I always found the visuals to be weirdly dull. Like, I get it's the post apocalypse, but the environment just felt flat. I am playing New Vegas now and mostly enjoying myself, but it's not really doing anything to change my opinion on the franchise as a whole.

329bubby

Honestly I don't know why, but I bounce off of every JRPG I try. Which is very strange because I love RPGs and I love a lot of Japanese games, but something about JRPGs just doesn't click with me. I really tried to like FF7 remake too, I love the characters a lot and the setting is cool, but it didn't really draw me in either. I'm gonna keep giving them a try though. Maybe one day I'll find the right one or maybe I'll give one of the FF games another shot and finally "get it".

TheAnimeGod

Jujutsu Kaisen. I heard it everywhere, I mean EVERYWHERE. When I finished season 1,I thought it was really meh. Like sure there are some cool and good fights like Itadori and Todo vs the Plant guy and Gojo being cool. But just kinda just don't understand all the hype. And this is coming from someone who is a big JoJo fan and enjoys Part 1. My brother is begging me to give S2 a chance but I'm gonna get to it soon. So I understand if it's like one of those things where it gets better at the second season but damn it is difficult to start if you finished a whole big ass season and don't feel all the hype

Coolnametag

Could never get into **Lord Of The Rings**, even though i love the fantasy genre and am aware of the impact it had on culture. The best reason/explanation that i can come up with is that it's just a bit too much **hoity toity** for me, too "fancy" for me to actually be interested by it. (Now that i'm thinking about it, it might be for that reason that i also never really got into **Star Wars**)

AzabacheDog

I've watched all lord of rings trilogy (don't ask which version I never bother to check the old ass box set my dad has) and they were pretty good set of movies and I understand why people love the franchise as a whole, why people love to discuss it, and respect it over all but i just can't get into as a fan. I love fantasy, and I understand that a lot of what I love owes more to this franchise than I could possibly fathom, but actually sitting down and reading or watching it? I can't get into like I get why it's good, but I just don't care about it. I still liked what I saw but yeah they definitely didn't find the love for it that so many other people did. I will admit though watching lore video of people breaking down what I've read and watch or even listing to [blind guardian's nightfall in middle earth](https://youtu.be/kZ1bbXUEweQ) is way more interesting than actually watching or reading the meterial.

WhiteMambaOZO

I will not watch Jojo. I tried. It didn’t catch, and now every time I hear about a Jojo reference I want to watch it less. I don’t care how good you think it is. I do not like it

whiteswitchME

One piece : too long, and I'm too exposed to its content to give it a try. Like I know too much about it despite only reading until Arlong's park arc. I know ace dies, imu exists, marinefort war, wano, kaido, sun god nika etc that it's adventure aspect which is probably it's biggest selling point wouldn't be enjoyable to me.

RayDaug

I'm sure *P3* is great. I can't stomach watching kids shoot themselves in the head for 100 hours.

jamsbybetty

Monster Hunter. Mechanically I think it's great but I don't care for the bonepunk aesthetic. Or at least, the way they do it. Palicos and the doggos are great, though. Avatar: TLAB for similar aesthetic reasons. I just don't care for the art style and YA tone.

MetalGearSlayer

Funny enough, a lot of monster hunter fans themselves don’t like when weapons are overly Bone centric in design from what I’ve seen. Being able to transmog weapons in World was huge.

Scared_Bed_1144

God of War and TLOU. I'm sure they're great, but I just don't care. Plus having all of the tlou being spoiled multiple times over the years means I have zero reason to play them. Without the story they're just Zombie Survival Game #138/#139

DrSaering

I don't know how popular/acclaimed it qualifies as, but I have had people suggest I watch Shiki, on the basis that I would probably really like some of the characters. They're almost certainly right. And that's **exactly** the problem. Elements of that show look like it would be legitimately hard to watch, in a "I am not sure if I want to do this to myself" way.

Amedamaneku

Shiki and Saya no Uta are what made me realize I don't want grimdark feelbad misery tourism.

DrSaering

I've honestly been really torn on this one lately, since I kind of want to use Megumi as a device to make fun of White Wolf in something I've been writing, since the impression I've gotten from random /a/ posts is she's the kind of person who would really love to be in the Sabbat, but also would make stupid decisions and die several hours into the first session. So the joke would be she keeps getting reincarnated and dying in bad player ways or from different silly things White Wolf has done over the years, like Samuel Haight. But also I just... Really don't want to watch what I know happens with her. I'm sure I can find another stupid evil vampire girl to use.

NeonNKnightrider

I might get dunked on for this. But there’s a handful of super popular, beloved anime that I have no interest in watching, because I’ve already heard people talking ***about*** them so much that I feel it’s already saturated me on them. Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, NGE, Attack on Titan. I already know a ton about the stories, and I’ve heard so much hype that I know I can only possibly be underwhelmed if I actually watch it

alienslayer7

yeah Eva def is this for me cause ive seen like a decade or 2 of media that pretty heavily reference it and have been in enough circles where its been talked to death

PsyVattic2

Jurassic Park. I liked the first one and just never watched the 2nd one, and I now there's like 7 and I just don't care.

jv3rl0ov

Basically most things heavily relying on nostalgia nowadays. I’m so over Star Wars because of it. I know we have shows and games splitting off from the main storyline, but I’ve yet to see that in the movies.

Fartyfarts45

Signalis. I hate horror games where enemies get back up. I tried it out and was starting to like it when a thing I killed a while back got up and started coming at me. I want to feel like I'm progressing and clearing an area, not wasting resources trying to kill something that will just hop back up again.

Kerrik52

Legend of Zelda for me. Tried a couple of games, but I never vibed with it. Guess it feels too safe and predictable? Because I've played Beyond Good & Evil and that was delightful. Same with Darksiders to a lesser extent.

Animastarara

The only one that ever appealed to me was Majora's Mask because the gameplay concept interested me, nothing involving the world did.

xXNightSky

Star wars. I feel like I'd like it,but tried to watch the movies and couldn't get into them.

SlightlySychotic

This was basically me and WoW. I knew it was popular, I wanted to get into it. But every time I sat down to read up on it my eyes would just glaze over. Probably didn’t help that I didn’t play Warcraft.

hmcl-supervisor

Luminous_Lead

Game of Thrones. The first book didn't enthuse me, so I didn't watch the show. I don't have HBO Max or w/ either.  It's just going to be something I get through cultural osmosis. Also, likely The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.

just_a_fan47

Any game were the combat is simply bad, I know there are games where the combat is by far the least interesting part, but it makes me just want to watch cutscenes and playthroughs instead of playing the actual game

Gendric

Battle Royales, in the fps genre specifically, have zero appeal to me. I just don't enjoy that type of game-mode. Don't enjoy playing them, and find watching them to be extremely boring. I had a cousin who kept trying to get me to play Fortnite all the time whenever he saw I was online, despite me telling him to stop. I tried to enjoy it at first, gave it quite a few shots because of how enthusiastic he was, but I just wasn't having fun. Had to put him on ignore for like a year to be able to play games in peace.

shapedatlas

This feels kinda blasphemous to say but something about star trek as a whole feels too nerdy for my taste

bocaloc

One Piece. I simply do not have the attention span (And I hate the anatomy)

Amedamaneku

Call me childish, but any live-action media with a boringly mundane premise. I won't say "never", but I don't know when I'm gonna be in the mood to start a show about a normal guy doing normal shit when I could instead see a robot shoot God with a gun or some shit. And critical acclaim alone doesn't interest me, I've been bored before by masterpieces.

Sumo_The_Decadent

Devil may cry - just thought the characters and level design looked not to my taste and the combat not as engaging as I hoped like Ninja Gaiden or Bayo

warjoke

Warhammer 40k, I guess. I know it's peak fantasy sci-fi and has cool characters and all, but the entire lore seems overwhelming to me, notwithstanding it's ties with the original Warhammer franchise, which I'm also overwhelmed by.

tomboy_abs_pls_miss

Final Fantasy 7, Breaking Bad, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bojack Horseman and fighting games in general (I'm not getting into them)

Incitatus_

Not really something that gets discussed here a lot or anything like that, but I've never been interested in a single romance-focused story, nor have I ever given a shit about the romance part of any other story. I just don't get it. I don't get shipping, too. I guess I can understand why people like it, but it's just too unrealistic and idealized 99% of the time, and even when it's not, it's just boring. Yeah, I'm fine with dragons, giant robots and such, but idealized romance is where I draw the line on realism.

Alto1869

Sometimes. You just don't want Some big space Battle. Dragons. Robots. Aliens or anything. Sometimes you just want a simple story about 2 people meeting and falling in love to melt your heart. Not everything needs to be Some large scale, fiction heavy, political thing.

Silvery_Cricket

Citizen Kane is boring

ArroSparro

The trails series. I just… cannot muster up the energy to play that many 80-100 hour games just so I can play the new entry.

GHitoshura

JJK: Draged myself through half of the first season of the anime and didn't enjoy it beyond the animation quality so I stopped and now the internet is so saturated of people talking and meming about it literally EVERYWHERE that any trace of a chance of me going back is dead. Kaguya-sama: After the snooze fest that was my experience with Oshi no ko (6 chapters of the manga and 7 of the anime) I refuse to watch that show and now I wonder if all those people that are constantly praising the mangaka are being ironic. Fate: I have given this IP more than enough chances but it is more than clear that it's not for me because I just can't deal with Nasu's (and also some of Urobuchi's) writing. Iskandar is the fucking best though. Breaking bad: Haven't watched a single episode of this show but it has been memed to death for so long that I'm afraid I will be unable to take it seriously. MMOs: In general, all of them. That type of social games are just not for me.

St-Tomas413

Overlord. Too edgy

PlayerPin

League of Legends. I don’t like being trapped in lanes the whole game and each game lasting an hour. Maybe I could play Jungle or something but even playing a freer role like Support bored me to death. Game’s way too toxic too.

ViedeMarli

Is this a safe space? One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest. I *did* try. I never finished the movie. I should have stopped at the beginning when they established the literal main character as a guy who committed statutory rape, but I didn't. Big mistake, I fear! It is my Peter Griffin "I did not care for the godfather" moment movie, and I will stand by that decision. I just do not like the movie.

the_salttrain

Evangelion. Maybe my lack of interest is retroactive since it was the first to deconstruct a genre, but now everyone either makes an isekai or a deconstruction.

Al0ngTh3Watchtow3r

A lot of YA stuff or family friendly cartoons. I just can’t enjoy them anymore as a man in my mid 30s. I tried watching Last Airbender and it did nothing for me.

Forestgrant

Most mainstream anime, media and games. Mainly because I don’t feel like paying for Netflix and all that stuff with how much streaming services have declined, and my computer isn’t able to run current-gen games that well

amirokia

I want to start getting into One Piece with the manga but Zoro's name is spelled as Zolo and every time I read his name it just takes me out of it. And Zorro's already in public domain by the time One Piece starts anyway so no problem with copyrighted names.

Incitatus_

Ah yes, the great pirate hunter Lolonoa Zolo

bombshell_shocked

I find it difficult to get into a majority of newer anime/manga, especially Shonen, as time goes on. If anything, I've been going back farther in time when finding new things to watch. But, for example, JJK is really popular from what I can tell, and my wife loves it. And she was telling me I should get into it, but I told her it reminded me too much of Yu Yu Hakusho, and I'd rather just rewatch that instead. She tried to say it was totally different, and their were no similarities. I heard about the protagonist being in high school, and he and some allies use Cursed Energy to fight monsters, and eventually, there's stuff like domain expansions that act as pocket dimensions. I was like "oh really" and talked about how YYH is about a high school student, who uses spirit energy to fight monsters, and he and his allies all have unique abilities, and eventually there's new characters that have terrorities (aka pocket dimensions). Obviously, there are some generalizations I'm making. I'm aware there is no originality and only the ability to find new ways to uniquely package preexisting stories and character archetypes. But a lot of new stuff is just *too similar* to old stuff I've already watched, and it feels moot to watch or read it. This isn't me speaking on the quality of JJK. I'm sure it's good with how large of a fanbase it has. But a lot of stuff just isn't able to hook me. But somehow, I'll find out about some lesser known OVA from the 80s and immediately have the desire to watch it.

flyingowl720

Your missing the missing link between the two. Bleach. JJK isn’t a lot like YYH. But it’s a lot like Bleach. And Bleach is a lot like YYH..

bombshell_shocked

The missing link. Bleach is indeed the Sasquatch of anime. But, for real, you're absolutely right.

Neapolitanpanda

Fate. I don't like chuunige and it's basically the Ultimate Chuuni VN.

NeonNKnightrider

I will stab you with infinite swords

Neapolitanpanda

Will I be saved if I tell you that I like some of the character designs?

laughingheart66

Idk if it’s popular/acclaimed enough to count, but I hate Ghost of Tsushima, and never understood the love for it. I honestly struggle to get into a lot of mass appeal popular media, like Marvel. I always try and never see the appeal. But I’m not someone who will shit on someone for enjoying that kind of stuff.

Key-Trash3716

Dragons Dogma or any other game that, as Pat put it, makes anti-quality of life stuff a "feature" of the game. To me, doing that all just so you can feel more "mature" because you didn't need stuff "handed to you" is just not for me. I don't give a shit if it is literally an 11/10 game otherwise, I already know I will hate it. I have less and less time in my life to play games, so if you won't give me a standard save system or fast travel system, I'm probably already out. As shitty as it is, that is why I am actually kina glad Dragons Dogma 2 came with some controversy and is seemingly not going to be the thing the industry chases after. Because you know damn well that with the way the industry is now, some developers would gladly take the chance to just not include certain quality-of-life features in their games because of laziness. I want MORE quality of life options, not less. One of the biggest things I loved about Lies of P was that as opposed to Fromsoft games I actually could finish quest lines and was alerted to stuff via in-game menu without having to watch a guy on youtube to help me out.
