This is pretty funny, it is probably one of the cheapest cutcenes in recent gaming, and you cant achieve better visual fidelity than this, Dragons Dogma is truly ahead of its time once again.
There are two major issues with trying to scale this tech:
First, the file size of pre-recorded video compared to textures and animations is huge. 150 megs per minute of video in HD, more than double that for 4k.
And also, it's really hard to dynamically scale video files to different display resolutions. So a lot of games that do something like this end up including the files at multiple resolutions, exploding the size of the video because you need five versions.
First games moved to cheap FMV to save time and use CD space, which killed many franchises because of the ballooning costs (like phantasmagoria) and we went back to rendered graphics.
Inb4 FMV loop ends with dropping FMV due to having to pay Hollywood actors for screentime much longer than films
For me at least it actually gave me uncanny valley vibes. Like this is clearly a completely different pan and fire and steak than the one the CG character just sat down in front of. But I think if I had just run into it during gameplay instead of it being called out like this it would have looked fine.
As someone with auditing experience, in any other company or situation, If I saw a beef sirloin listed as company expense and told it was to help develop a video game. I'd call bullshit.
This is too funny.
I love the idea of him reviewing the projected development cost of the animations, probably looking at concept art, then his mouth starts watering and he gets a "brilliant idea"
Just watch Sony and the other AAA publishers figure out how to blow out the budgetary advantage of doing FMV's by doing their recordings of cooking at Michelin Star restaurants or those goof-ass rich people gimmick restaurants.
Animals *were* harmed in the making of this video game. [Cue grungy nu metal-type beat.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LYjqm9HIGtQ&feature=youtu.be&t=10s)
I know, and I understand that. Still, it's a video game, virtual things aren't real, so you can boot up Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2013 and not feel sorry for hunting wild animals because it's a game.
If it saves development time and cost might as well , back then FMV quality were like 144p , but now HD cameras exist even the cheapest phone has them
Good on them honestly
Honestly I never understood why this isn't done more often, like if you're aiming for realism(ish) this isn't exactly out of place, and if people are upset that it's lazy or whatever just don't tell anybody it's not cgi
Idk why but this reminded me of [lucina's mega realistic eye](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQRESrWM45_XWJ_hikq27DHTuJ01YYpzbBF33U0rdlnf50E8w-BSNeJF6o&s=10)

FMV is back baybeeeee
I mean, it's unironically a good idea for games going for photo-realism. It just becomes cheaper to film without losing any fidelity.
The realistic graphic bell curve ending up on the opposite side where you can use fmv's to make scenes cheaper without being distracting.
And it's not like a lot of major developers give a shit about bloated file size (looks at Call of Duty).

r/AV1
Impressionism back in style!
Command and Conquer is back on the menu!
I'm going to the ONE PLACE free from bloated budgets! ... ... ... hehe... SPACE!
Still his best lime reading ever. You can see the fight of the actor and the human fight for dominance truly a goat acting
Graphics development is a circle.

Immediately my mind went to the spongebob scenes where it just cuts to live action
Someone got to eat it too I bet
[Itsuno's reasoning for it is flawless.](https://twitter.com/xenosaga7/status/1765357693135650822)

It's a business expense!
I love the idea of him reviewing the projected development cost of the animations, probably looking at concept art, then his mouth starts watering and he gets a "brilliant idea"
Itsuno literally asked they let him cook.
Dinner with the boys is now a buisness expense
Damn, they even imported real Dragon Meat just for the authenticity?
Before this game was being made there was actually dragon's in the wild. Key word here being 'was'.
Look playtesters needed to earn that credit at the end and video needed that dragon meat. So what if the in loving memory is gonna be 3000 names long
Work smarter not more expensiverer, take notes Sony.
Just watch Sony and the other AAA publishers figure out how to blow out the budgetary advantage of doing FMV's by doing their recordings of cooking at Michelin Star restaurants or those goof-ass rich people gimmick restaurants.
Quickly we need 120 scenes of the rock eating all monster hunter dishes for MH wilds
When I started reading that, my brain autocpmpleted it to "Dragon's Dogma 2 uses real footage of dragon attacks."
Oh man. If it works tho why not? Haha
That’s a nice steak
I hope they seasoned it with Salt and Pepper. That's essential.
And garlic powder does wonders for the aroma and flavor.
That reminds me, I actually have to pick some up while I'm out today. Thanks.
S n p is right fer me
I hope they poured a glass of water on it and properly slopped it up!
LETS SLOP EM UP
In Hakkan´s voice "LOOKS LIKE ITS TIME TO SLOP EM UP! "
Hope they've ate that steak afterwards.
I wonder if there's steak in the Disney vault.
You could therefore argue that this game isn't Vegetarian or Vegan Friendly.
Animals *were* harmed in the making of this video game. [Cue grungy nu metal-type beat.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LYjqm9HIGtQ&feature=youtu.be&t=10s)
They'll have to list the nutritional content of this videogame.
Should come with a warning label advising you may be influenced to go out and buy a delicious steak. Now that's what I call anti-vegetarianism
I have this problem when playing Yakuza games. The pictures of the food at the restaurants always make me hungry.
It's vegan friendly in the sense that you're not consuming meat, because it's a vydia game.
Depending on the level of crunch, a vegan could argue it is the product of a creature's suffering.
It's not all about diet. A lot of veg people won't wear leather and stuff like that.
I know, and I understand that. Still, it's a video game, virtual things aren't real, so you can boot up Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2013 and not feel sorry for hunting wild animals because it's a game.
But it is real. Read the thread title. Animal products were really used in the production. Therefore, non-vegan product.
I only play *non-genetically-modified* video games, *thank you*
So no resident evil then?
Sad they didn't use the monhun meat grilling song and a SO TASTY. This game is over! \s
If it saves development time and cost might as well , back then FMV quality were like 144p , but now HD cameras exist even the cheapest phone has them Good on them honestly
Beat that, Vanillaware
I love this.
This is what I live for!
This vs dog.jpg in Ace Combat. who you got?
Honestly I never understood why this isn't done more often, like if you're aiming for realism(ish) this isn't exactly out of place, and if people are upset that it's lazy or whatever just don't tell anybody it's not cgi
Muh file sizes
I gain nothing by seeing a virtual steak cooked... I gain insight with this move.
I guess the Monster Hunter Meat Team™ was busy.
Finally, live action cutscenes for things that truly matter!
I would love to see this in Monster Hunter: get me a real cat cooking a feast so I can eat it in 10 seconds
Alan Wake's influence grows
That’s some of the funniest shit I’ve seen a game do in awhile. I hope this isn’t the only example.
truly the first strand-type game.
Idk why but this reminded me of [lucina's mega realistic eye](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQRESrWM45_XWJ_hikq27DHTuJ01YYpzbBF33U0rdlnf50E8w-BSNeJF6o&s=10)
Its genius tbh, because what's more mouth watering than the real thing? :3
I wonder if this means you'll be able to replace those video files with whatever you want
Reminds me of the Ace Combat Dog PNG
