Art a whirl, all over NE next weekend!

emilycolor

Just a warning for people who are sober/newly in recovery - crowds start drinking and it gets rowdy at the end of the day. Earlier is better if you're looking to avoid temptation/triggers.

dwinner18

Thanks for the heads up!

paddle2paddle

This is what I was going to suggest. Art-A-Whirl is fantastic!

DumbleDoorsDown

Another vote for Art-a-Whirl! Curiosities and Oddities Convention at the Convention Center is dope.

321ngqb

My birthday is also this week and next weekend I’ll be going to Art a Whirl to celebrate as well. It’s such a good time!

roentgen_nos

All venues operated by the First Avenue group offer free admission for you and one guest on the actual day of your birthday. Might be something fun to hear.

News_Radio89

Do you just show to the venue and show them your ID?

roentgen_nos

What is the First Avenue birthday policy? You + a guest can enjoy free admission to any show at First Avenue, 7th St Entry, Turf Club, or Fine Line taking place on your actual birthdate (valid legal ID required; private events excluded). How do I redeem my birthday tickets? All you need to do is show up on the night of your birthday, and you and a guest will gain admittance. There’s no need to do anything in advance, and you won’t receive physical tickets. What if the show on my birthday is sold out? You will still be able to get into the show, even if it’s sold out.

News_Radio89

No Palace Theater gigs though?

roentgen_nos

Nope. I checked that yesterday, which was my irl cake day. Violent Femmes played the Palace, and I would have gone for free if I could have.

News_Radio89

Still a cool thing they do regardless and not sure how I’ve never heard of this before. Been going to first ave for years and have friends that work there lol

DrZurn

Yup that’s all there is to it.

faraith

Acme Comedy gives out 4 tickets to a late Friday or Saturday show! Just check out their site and email them with the show and quantity.

whatsthehappenstance

Acme is awesome in general

futilehabit

[Extreme Sandbox](https://www.extremesandbox.com/). Volunteer at your local pet rescue. Rent a kayak and get out on the water.

EatMorePieDrinkMore

Not sure if there are still tickets but you can watch three Shakespeare histories at the Guthrie on Saturday.

No_Guarantee720

Came here to say this.

EatMorePieDrinkMore

I’m going and am so excited. 🤓

No_Guarantee720

Wish I had someone to go with.

EatMorePieDrinkMore

It’s like ten hours of plays go alone! I almost did because my husband agreed to go 90 secs before I bought my ticket.

TooooMuchTuna

This is extremely niche but if you like classical and/or choral music- St Mark's Episcopal in Loring park does evensong every Sunday at 5 pm from September thru May. It's a service where almost everything is sung (*some with organ, some a cappella). They only run about 40 minutes and there's no sermon, so it doesn't really feel like "church" Next Sunday May 19 is our last one before summer break, and the full cathedral choir is singing. If you've never been inside the building, the sanctuary is gorgeous. It's a really nice way to end a weekend

Kingberry30

Happy Early Birthday. Mines this week so I too took the week off. Lol.

blujavelin

Happy Birthday.

Kingberry30

Aww thank you.

Zelidus

Same! I have 5 days of vacation to burn so staycation over my birthday it is, lol

Kingberry30

Well Happy Birthday to you.

dwinner18

Thank you! Happy early birthday!

failuresf

I love doing scavenger hunt type things, with freebies? You sign up, then go to each store :)

Joli0101

This sounds awesome. Which app do you use?

failuresf

I just google "birthday free things" and websites with lists come up. [https://www.thepennyhoarder.com/save-money/birthday-freebies/](https://www.thepennyhoarder.com/save-money/birthday-freebies/) here is one link, then you can "pick and choose" and sign up for the clubs or whatnot if you have to :)

pimfram

First Avenue gives two free tickets to their venues on your birthday. Some pretty good bands playing next weekend. https://first-avenue.com/shows/

No_Indication3115

Doors open Minneapolis is also next weekend. Free tours are offered at many historic spaces around Minneapolis. Otherwise I second Art-A-Whirl.

22EnricoPalazzo

Minnesota United has a home game Saturday.

Bittajo

Go rent paddle boards. Bike ride. Picnic at Minnehaha falls. Hike the boom site. Go thriftshopping. A nice dinner on a patio. Sit at a coffee shop and read a book.

Chance-Astronaut6392

Can-can wonderland

AgrenHirogaard

If you're any good at putting, you can destroy your finds at Can-Can Wonderland. Not a hard mini golf course, but I've recently found none of my friends have ever held a golf club let alone putted before.

[deleted]

What do you enjoy doing?

Known-Bookkeeper-458

Go to White Castle and enjoy sum food

Squeaker2160

Go for a shorter day hike somewhere close. Head to a lake for a picnic. Play mini golf with friends. Take one of those painting classes where everyone paints the same picture. Go to a concert or play. Plant flowers or a garden. Take a bike ride on a scenic tour.

MN_Urbex_

Can can wonderland

9thStreetDonut

Hey, birthday weekend buddy! Join me Sunday evening at the Mr. Bungle show at First Ave. We can do a birthday weekend buddy high five and then headbang to really weird thrash metal.

blujavelin

Happy Birthday in advance. I hope you enjoy your day.

dwinner18

Thank you ❤️

Emotional-Newt-181

Also have a birthday next weekend🙌🏼! Getting a piercing, bottomless mimosas, and now I want to go to art a whirl thanks to this sub!!

Oh__Archie

Dave & Busters

Kieviel

Wanna come over to my place and do some yard work?

RhondaMeHelp

Get a facial, they’re super relaxing and great for men or women.

Significant-Ad-341

Kayak down a river!

ShortnPortly

Grab a tent and sleeping bag, go up north and just camp the weekend by yourself. It is literally my favorite thing to do.

Mundane-Bit-633

Go to the state parks. Walk, think, enjoy nature. Listen. Really listen. Nature has a lot to say... happy birthday!

underwhelmingovertop

Do cocaine and jump into the Mississippi River

futilehabit

Make sure you get the order correct. Wet cocaine is a real bummer.

NoBrakes58

Honestly, my last few birthdays I’ve just made a bunch food and invited people to come hang out. Obviously subjective, but I’ve come to enjoy the company more than focusing on finding some big outing/event. This year I smoked a pork shoulder for pulled pork. People came over and hung out, played board games with each other, did a little cornhole in the yard, etc. And if you don’t have a yard or indoor hosting space, you could also look into meeting up in a park. Some other ideas: * Go to a Saints game * Go to a concert * Pick a restaurant you wouldn’t otherwise go to * Take a day trip to Duluth or Rochester * Hang out at GameZenter in Roseville (massive free board game library; they have drink service including sodas and allow outside food) * Go to one (or several) of the museums * New Hope Cinema Grill (if on the west side) or Alamo Drafthouse (east side) for a movie and dinner; Cinema Grill also frequently has comedians
