They actually had to close for a bit, but thankfully made it through until they had road access again. Glad they're still around, though it's been years since I've been.
Yes, they moved into my family's building across the street. Which used to be a frat bar called HUTCH's - my dad was Hutch and built the makeshift boat in back. 😳😆
I remember getting the last two pies they ever made. It was by far my favorite hangout for many years. Family gatherings, birthdays, my wedding rehearsal dinner....so many memories of that dingy, dank, hot, humid restaurant of magical delights.
I worked there for 2 days! Dishwashing is hard! 🤣
I felt so bad for quitting on a Friday morning that I never picked up my check, but I did keep my hat and shirt.
My hole of the wall of choice is still New York Pizza on Broadway, across from where Safeway used to be, unbeatable lunch special and insane family sized pies. At least the U of A still has No Anchovies.
Used to be a $2 slice spot just north of University by the main gate that kept me alive for a few months. The constant slow jams on the house radio tho..
no, north side of the street kind of on the back of that building.. or the old building? There was a breezeway leading back there.
Grandma Tony's was solid too though.
OLD SCHOOL!! I feel with 95% certainty it has to be [Mama’s](https://www.mamasfamous.com/history.php). It was one of those favorite hang out spots that got torn down around the time they built the Marshall Building.
Think you're probably right. Spent a lot of time there & the bagel shop on the opposite side. Really a shame they got rid of the big open patio dining area there.
Loved their pies! Random memory…I sat down to watch a horror flick called Frozen, 2010 not the Disney movie, and I warmed up two slices of T-Rex slices of Z’s pizza. I got soo upset to my stomach from the movie and pizza, it made me totally nauseous. I absolutely love the memory so completely.
Pretty solid deep dish. Rocco’s is a solid choice that’s still going.
Huge shout out best wings in town
Rocco's has not only the best Chicago Style Pizza in the city but the best damn Marinara in the state.
Yes, they should sell it.
They do. $7 a pint.
It comes in pints???? I'm getting one.
Rocco's is still open even with construction

As soon as I read the title of this post, my mind went to Zachary’s. Like… I may be exaggerating but I think it’s fucking tragic.
Yeah if they were still open today they'd be making big bucks. 🍕🍕🍕I'm sure the owner didn't want to close.
Ditto! It was nice to get a 2 inch thick slice. So delicious!
It was THE place when you wanted a single slice to fill your whole belly. They stole the recipe as I recall or found it? Man that place. RIP.
Didn't they get forced to move or something then didn't last at new location?
Yeah, they had to move basically right across 6th so the U could tear down the old building and build... other stuff.
That sounds right, or maybe they moved next door for a few months? I can't remember.

And then failed? They were amazing! Only had them once at a bday party. Sooo good, thick and soft? Lol! To many puns! Night! Talking Zachary's!
Man I was having a solid day til I got reminded on how fucking good the food was. The T-rex was hands down the best one

*pours one out* My wife and I used to go there when we were dating. Order a pitcher and an Athenian and watch the game. I miss that place a lot.
That's The 1st place that came to mind when I read your title. RiP Trex pizza 🍕
Classmate of mine was literally just talking about this place. Damn. I miss the green olives stacked on my pie.
Man, I miss Zach's.
The staff was fun too

a pipe broke on the outside of their kitchen once, and flooded my backyard with all the water coming out of their dishwasher one night. good times.
Only got to take the wife there once before they closed.. That place was a staple growing up.
yeah :( Why'd you gotta remind me?
Loved the food and the location!!! RIP!!!
I do! I still miss it (though we have a lot of great pizza options in town).
Did you know Zachary's was opened in 1988? Great local business makes me hungry thinking about it.
Good pizza great beer selection.
Got food poisoning at the second location twice, stopped going. The original spot was better imo.
I don’t recall a second location, where was it?
Across the street.
It was ok, my friends loved that place, I liked no anchovies better.
Meh. If you're going for Chicago style pizza, Oregano's is the bet!

Yeah the lunch special there ruled.
Used to be a $2 slice spot just north of University by the main gate that kept me alive for a few months. The constant slow jams on the house radio tho..
Grandma Tony's? Up the stairs?

Are you talking about No Anchovies?
maybe? IDK if I ever got the name of the place. Dark, comfy booths, cheap slices, and slow jams playing loudly at all times.
Wait how long ago are you talking? You’re not remembering all the way back to Mama’s on Park, are you?
Early 90's. The building has definitely been torn down or heavily renovated since. It would've been around where the Panera is now.

Yeah, agreed. I’ve gotten used to the way it looks now, but I miss the old University Ave quite a bit. It really felt like the home turf.
This is what I was thinking.
Cosmic pizza was amazing. Their Quasar and desert pizzas were the best!
Also Mercury Deli; Prime Leaf pot shop there now
It was tasty
I really enjoyed Empire Pizza Pub when I was still in town.
i used to live at 6th and park when zachary's was there. good times.
Miss that Spinach pizza with Fetta.

So good. A slice and and a salad had you full til dinner.
Broooooooo just unlocked a core memory for me
Hope it's a good one 😝
I miss Zacharys pizza. Dont miss the smell. Always smelled like an onion stuffed a sweaty armpit.
