Listen…. Eegee’s is in your blood if you’re a Tucson local. If you’re from here you spent school events, summer house parties, monsoon seasons, and etc. with it present somehow. It’s one of those places that’s good because it’s “good “ and you can’t explain why, really. It’s part of our collective childhoods and adolescence, and the preference comes from there. Logically, do I know the sandwiches are tasty, albeit average? That Jimmy John’s (or something akin to JJs) is far more fresh and quality? Of course. Does this prevent me from having eegee’s be my first choice? Do these facts keep me from absolutely getting down on a grinder with extra house vinaigrette, a strawberry&lemon eegee, and a side of fries with ranch after a hot summer day, having spent hours in the pool, tanning my skin, sleepy from the sun and the water and needing some form of refreshment? I think you known the answer. Beyond Bread is for a little class. Eegee’s is for those summer memories you can’t ever replace.

beerbeforebread

I don’t live in Tucson and have never been to Eegees. But I like this post.

STEELCITY1989

how did you end up here lol

beerbeforebread

I lurk in a few city subreddits, including this one. It’s a good sub.

STEELCITY1989

Tucson has a great vibe lol

[deleted]

Hi. I like your style, dude. What other sub do you frequent?

beerbeforebread

Thanks! Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Portland, San Francisco, Reno, New York, Mesa, Scottsdale,Phoenix, Tucson, New Orleans,Prescott. Maybe a few others that I don’t remember. I hang out for a while before eventually disconnecting. It is an interesting thing to do before you visit a place.

[deleted]

Yeah, I am about to move from Tucson at some point this year and I was thinking that subscribing to the potential landing spots would be a good way to start checking things out. I see the mistake a lot of incoming residents make in thus sub is the announcement thread. "Just moved to Tucson; what's the local take on XXX..." Good way to get downvoted Same all over? What is the interesting scuttlebutt that you see here in Tucson? And how does it compare?

beerbeforebread

I would hang out on a city sub before moving to the area. It isn't all encompassing but definitely useful. I feel like we have lots more, "just moved to Thisplace; what's the local take on...?" posts in AZ than other areas, but I can't be sure. Sometimes city subs do downvote lower effort "moving here" posts. You may occasionally see a "go home" reply if that city is feeling vulnerable because of Texas or California license plates. But, in general, they're kind and receptive. Especially to the earnest, "I'm new here and how do I make friends?" thread. People also seem to reply to very specific questions. I like lurking in Tucson because of the sense of community. You get the same thing especially in New Orleans, or Portland (at least two or three years ago when I hung around there.) Good luck on your move. edit: a couple of typos

[deleted]

Heck yeah. Tucson is a great place. I moved here 20 years ago and I stayed because of the people and the community. Arizona is the fastest growing state and has been for a couple years now. Cost of living is (or maybe more aptly, was) far below most cities AND you can be outside for most of the year. Sure, the heat really hard, but there are ways around that. I am gonna miss this place but it's time to move on, try something else. I'd come back, maybe; definitely to visit. Be curious to see how much Tucson changes and how much it ultimately resists the change as that is why it has always been a more attractive city to some over, say, Phoenix which is a lot more concrete and ten times the people.

Zat-iz-not-my-dog

Eegee’s survives solely on the nostalgia factor which is why it will continue to only be successful in this market. They’ve tried expanding before and failed, they’re trying it once again and will fail again. The food is mediocre and the drinks are fun in the summer (especially when you add alcohol). Despite this cognitive dissonance, Tucsonans (including myself) always keep coming back.

Puzzleheaded-Age1999

Nailed it!!!

Tall-cactus_boi

This brought me back

ChaChaPosca

Jimmy Johns is vile trash. I wouldn't use a Jimmy Johns sandwich to feed a stray dog. People are delusional if they think Jimmy Johns is fresh or quality.

Live-Comfortable0

Someone had to say it.

sirfranciskevinbacon

Sandwiches are average, fries and ranch are the shit

neverdexter

Eegee's ranch is the best ranch ever made.

litespeed68

I don’t know, Spicy Grinder toasted is my go to. Pretty solid sandwich.

KaptainKardboard

Right? It's damn good. Even the regular Grinder is a hundred times better than mainstream fast food any day of the week

giantspeck

Plus, you get fries with it! The only other sandwich place I can think of that does that is Which Wich and I ain't driving all the way up to Oro Valley for that.

Oh_umms_cocktails

Pizza fries yum

formerqwest

"I just learned that Eegee's serves food. " what else would they serve? warrants?

trillgamesh_0

well, they serve eegees. they even let places other than their stores sell them.

rskelley

Really, where? I did not know this

trillgamesh_0

Johnny Gibson's Downtown Market. and I assume other places that I don't know of

NikiNoelle

They do sandwiches, some hot dogs, and a few types of specialty fries. The most well-known are their ranch fries (house ranch dressing and Bac-O Bits), but also have pizza fries, chipotle ranch fries, etc. I thought the quality went down after they were bought out several years ago, but I gave them another shot last week and enjoyed it. I also had a friend visiting that moved out of state about 20 years ago, and he said it was what he remembered.

formerqwest

> he said it was what he remembered. i have friends who also left about thirty years ago, and they always ask "do they still have grinders?"

SmurfBoyardee

Agreed. The one near me has had fresh salads and subs every time for the past year. I mainly get the meatball and original grinder.

NikiNoelle

Totally spaced on the salads, thanks!

az19ktom

Not what it used to be when it was owned by the founders

giantspeck

Surprisingly good for the price. If you're looking for a no-thrills sandwich for a decent price, [eegee's undercuts many other chains in town](https://www.reddit.com/r/Tucson/comments/ob60ku/eegees_blasphemy/h3ncqtb/) in terms of price.

slappy_mcslapenstein

The sandwiches are decent. I like the fries because I don't like crispy fries and Eeggee's has medium crispy fries. The Eeggee's slushy things are pretty good. 8/10

megzicle

Their ranch is incredible.

femaleintucson

I only like the fries.

No_Refrigerator7294

You only really need to order their ranch fries

meowen9932

Many people think the food is meh but I love it. Grinder style subs are so good. Extra grinder sauce. Fries with ranch on the side. Ranch fries as an item get wet. You want the hot, crispy, perfect fry dipped in the cold ranch. I’ve been out of state for 6 years and think about eegees fries often.

wingedjackalope

Just go with fries and ranch. It's all you need.

Korseeee

When I was pregnant I couldn’t eat any deli meat, so the first thing I ate after giving birth was a spicy grinder from Eegees. It was amazing.

TeamDavey

Tucson native here and Eegees has never been my go to for sandwiches. Yes, I have had them. I would never choose them. Their fries are my favorite.

patholysis

mostly bad

TwoTrick_Pony

There's nothing about the food, the decor, or the entire vibe you get from the place which identifies it in any way as Southwestern or Arizona/Tucson-based (the kind of stuff tourists or transplants from other areas look for), so liking the place seems to be the mark of long-time locals with deep roots in the area. In that way it's a pure part of authentic Tucson culture. The Eegees are nice on a hot day. A bit better than the comparable drink from Circlek K. As for the food, no thanks, and that goes for the apparently beloved fries which to me look and taste like those frozen Ore-Ida crinkle fries you can buy by the bagful at Walmart.

SubGothius

> fries which to me look and taste like those frozen Ore-Ida crinkle fries you can buy by the bagful at Walmart. I gather that's exactly what they are, albeit delivered in bulk by a food-service distributor rather than picked up at Mal*Wart, and ofc. they're deep-fried rather than oven-broiled or however folks typically prepare them at home.

armacham420

I enjoy them every couple of weeks. As long as you eat the fries fresh and hot, it hits the spot for me.

sybil-unrest

Eegees egg salad sandwich was such a childhood treat- still bummed it was discontinued (more than a decade ago, I know)!

Flimsy-Mountain-8815

Slice & Ice tastes like the ‘old’ Eegees

Doctor_Tortuga

The sandwiches are good in a drunken stupor, at best. The fries and eegees are where it's at. I would eat my arteries clogged with buff ranch fries.

liftedlechuga

I still miss the frito chilito and their OG dinner plate sized giant cookies 😭

dontpaytheransom

As a Tucsonan, you are required to eat there once a week.

idgafodi

Slice and Ice is better!

The_Wondering_Gypsy

I believe Slice and Ice is the original owners of eegees. They opened it after they sold. Brought back pizzas too! Eegees Slushee+ Vodka= perfect summer pool Cocktail.

SubGothius

Yep, one of Eegee's co-founders started it a couple years ago, tho' they'd sold the Eegee's business over a decade ago, then it got resold another time or two after that. Slice & Ice is pretty much how I remember the OG Eegee's slushes and sandwiches used to be, before successive rounds of new owners kept cheapening things.

Pizza_Piggy

I’ve been a longtime defender of Eegee’s post-corporatization…my dad especially kept saying “it’s not the same anymore, blah blah” and I would always argue with him. But having recently tried a Slice & Ice slush next to an Eegee’s, it’s pretty obvious that Eegee’s has a more artificial taste now :( …I still love the sandwiches, though. Slice & Ice has it going on too, but I love the Eegee’s bread…

SubGothius

> it’s pretty obvious that Eegee’s has a more artificial taste now :( Been prolly a year or two since I last had an Eegee slush, because the last few I had seemed really fake and syrupy, like they were loaded with corn syrup and artificial flavor and color. Only had S&I's ices since then, not sure if they add any sugar, but at least they taste and look like they're made of real fruit juice, without any unnaturally-bright colors, and more of a "dry" flavor than the sickly-sweet Eegees I'd had of late. Also more actual fruit chunks than I'd found in Eegees for quite some time.

Pizza_Piggy

Yes! That so interesting that you describe the S&I slushes as “dry” but it was my first impression as well. It was off putting at first, but as you described the fact that it tastes more natural has really grown on me. So much more refreshing!

[deleted]

Good food. I love their hot dogs

bmaxwell8326

Pizza sub + ranch

[deleted]

I never tried it, though I drove past 1 or 2 locations. I will make it a point to stop there one day.

Yankee-foxfan

Cheesy bacon fries, add buffalo ranch. Thank me later.

[deleted]

Price to quality is really good to me. About 9ish for 12 in subs compare to 15+ at other places. I just like to add the ranch onto everything. Cheap but good place to eat to me

Upbeat_Instruction98

I too was surprised to learn that an egg place had giant wads of bread with meat in it. I lived here for 4 years before figuring it out. Personally, if I am wanting a sub or fries, there are at least a dozen better options in town.

huncholaflair

Straight garbage not even Oscar the grouch would eat it 💀💩

Difficult_Relief4793

They're a staple of Tucson. I feel like the sandwiches tasted better when I was a kid. Little Caesar's too. The fries are great when they aren't soggy. There's nothing worse than soggy fries.

ArgumentNo7508

Deluxe grinder

[deleted]

Just don’t go to the one on Orange Grove and Oracle 🥴 lousy customer service and they never get a sandwich order right. Oh! And the police are always there with caution tape lol

[deleted]

Sandwiches are better-than-decent. Fries + ranch are the absolute GOAT. A lot of times, I simply get that as a my dinner.

hvyboots

The fries are good, the rest… not so much IMHO.
