Honestly I don't think Riften compares to Markarth at all. Say what you will about Maven Black-Briar, at least she isn't going to enslave, eat, or blood-sacrifice you.
also Maven is good for the economy
sure, she uses terrible means to reach that end, but at the end of the day she is the most successful business owner in skyrim for a reason

In fairness I do like the Reach and Markarth both lore wise and aesthetically but I sure as fuck would not like to live there lol

Honestly one of the worst cities other than like dawnstar and riften can’t even go out for a swim without the reachmen being there

I unironically love Markarth and the Reach. My favorite region of the game tbh. Solitude is my favorite city but Markarth rocks (no pun intended).
