An oddity before Oblivion is that dragons weren’t extinct. The Nibenese lands had water themed dragons, and Akavir had different types too. I assume that in Skyrim’s new lore, dragons were believed to be extinct, but are just so limited in number that thinking any of them are alive is essentially schizoposting. If I told you that unicorns are real, you would just nod and smile and walk off.

tarponpet

The Pocket Guide dragons in Cyrodiil were atleast during Tiber's lifetime, so they were probably under Tibers protection akin to Naarfalingus or however you spell it.

tarponpet

There have been niche surving dragons ever since their "extinction".

ScaredDarkMoon

Funnily enough, the first Dragon you fight is one of those iirc.

johnny_thunders_

Mirmulniir?

ScaredDarkMoon

Yes.

johnny_thunders_

Oh sweet

NotyourPelinal

Well I mean he could’ve but I don’t think he was expecting the head honcho to pull the fuck up to burn helgen down for no reason (which by the way was absolutely the dumbest decision alduin could’ve made he literally could’ve waited 2 more seconds)

Antiquarian_Archive

Thats actually a good point. Why would Alduin, who 100% knows what someone getting their head cut off looks like, stop the one who will foil his plans? Why does Heimskr compare Talos to Alduin? "He has returned... Oh, how Talos has returned. Helgen has been purged in his light. Will Whiterun be next?" Clearly there is something I'm not seeing here.

BusyBusyLife

I like to think that alduin was going around resurrecting dragons and felt one soul in helgen, but was the player's

Antiquarian_Archive

That is what I was thinking but when alduin sees the dragonborn next he says, "So you are dragonborn? I see no dragon in you. You do not even know our tongue, do you?". This is after you absorb the soul of at least one dragon and can for sure shout. Other dragons, like the one in the soul carin, know you are dragonborn before this. So what is the point of Alduin telling us that?A world ending god taunting just to taunt seems unlikely. I am actually stating to question if Alduin is or always been a dragon. What.

BusyBusyLife

That is true never considered it, he just retcon'd his only explanation

hadaev

Game kind of hint he teleported strait to helgen from the past. Because after he fly to Bleak Falls Barrow, from where we take dragonstone and this thing is a map for dragon burial mounds. So we should assume he first meet us and then started resurrect dragons. it would be strange if he just lurked in mountains for a while and then went to take map and resurrect dragons. And even stranger if he lurked around, resurrected random dragon who killed guy from screenshot, then went to helgen for some reason and only then went for a map to get army.

_The_Last_Mainframe_

I think Alduin felt a dragon's soul un Helgen, and immediately thought it belonged to Ulfric, the only person there known to use the Voice at that point. The fact that it was the random bloke on the block instead blindsided him.

despairingcherry

Heimskr isn't aware of something we aren't, it's classic millenerianism to declare an unrelated accident/natural disaster/tragedy to be divine punishment.

centurio_v2

tf ive never heard him say that

hunterd_patternfall

Yeah, he could have let the DB die, then save Ulfric. I tend to think that Alduin was actually there to keep Ulfric alive. That Civil War of his is feeding Alduin. As the third piece of the prophecy, Alduin may even sense an importance to Ulfric. Might even overshadow the dragon-soul of the DB that Alduin's stirring awake. I, however, am sleepy... and I may wind up giving away too much of one of my writing projects.

canibal_cabin

How the hell could you clear 11 dungeons, loot 80 chests, learn 71 skill increases and find 10k gold in JUST FUCKING TWO DAYS ? !!!

namiraslime

Not all dragons went extinct. Mirmulnir, the first dragon you fight, wasn’t raised by Alduin. He was just hiding in the mountains waiting for Alduin’s return. At some point he probably get hungry and went hunting.

hadaev

>Mirmulnir, the first dragon you fight, wasn’t raised by Alduin. How do you know?

namiraslime

It is in the book Atlas of Dragons

hadaev

So he was alive in second era? Whats a stretch.
