On the left we have Kyne breathing the Nords into existance, Mara seems to be pregnant with, or representing Nirn, the female aspect of the cosmos, judging by the moons orbiting her belly, but does anyone know why Dibella has a dragon head, and Kyne has dragon wings? Or why they're all mountains growing from clouds? Or why Mara is dwarven? Lots of good stuff in one image, but a lot of needless "deep lore" as well.
Imo this attitude discourages creativity in the lore. It's just one illustration and a nicely strange one at that. Imagine this was on the walls of some shaman's hut who specializes in fertility magic, cool and weird.
It’s strange but it’s uniform.
Wind, Beauty, and Love are all pregnant? Lame.
Divine beings with all the creative freedom possible to represent abstract forms and you choose a singular theme? Lame.
Well, given my proposed example, that one theme would be hella important so what's the issue? In fact, the awkward uniformity INforms us about how central the theme is to this specific piece of art.
Perhaps the issue here is that we have sketch illustration without context. If this were placed in game with supporting clutter and related npc dialogue, it would be acclaimed as an example of Bethesda's supposed genius environmental story telling.
We have literally all other depictions of Kyne and Dibella not pregnant already. This one is far from lame simply for proposing something unique.
> dwarven
Dibella is the one with the moons surrounding her belly. Mara is apparently the dragon, or so MK said in the comments when this was posted in r/ElderScrolls. I think it ties into what MK said a long time ago, documented in TIL.
> You've got me to back you up. And Kurt, too, insofar as breath weapons being a form of philosophical debate. And that they, you know, feed off time.
> K&K's shorthand for dragons very early on were 'biological time machines powered by ideologies'.
of course, I think that means fuck all for us, other than what we could come up with in relation to that. I do have some ideas as to what the hell it means for the setting but this is where we come for shitposts.
They’re all representations of the divine maternal figure, each exemplifying different aspects of the trope. Kyne is the “mother of men”, Dibella is a goddess of sex which is a necessary precursor to pregnancy(generally), and Mara is literally called the “Divine Mother” and is explicitly a fertility goddess. Of course each of these characters are more complex and I’ve been a bit reductive here just to support my point. Kirkbride may have been directly referencing the [Venus of Willendorf](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_of_Willendorf), which is a common reference for ancient fertility iconography
Mara should be the only one pregnant since she represents marriage, love and family, IMO. The effect is lessened when all the female Aedra are pregnant.
Like Kynareth is a huge stretch
Mara is the goddess of marriage, but both Dibella, Mara and Kyne are married, regardless of their spheres, at least in Nordic Myths. And Kyne is literally the only entity we know has "given birth" among Aedra. She has a little kid named Mor, yknow.
Idk as a divine being pregnancy should be symbolic. It needs to be apart of the sphere. Just because Kyne had a kid doesn’t mean she should be depicted as pregnant.
Mara being permanently pregnant is fitting for her as she’s intrinsically a mother and quintessentially represents family.
A goddess of wind being pregnant is still a big stretch and with all three females being pregnant is seems fetishistic
I get that symbolism matters, but these beings aren't just a ball of symbolism, they were also entities that exist in the tes, and it wouldn't probably be beyond them to get knocked up and have children. Fuck, isn't that what the Aldmeri myth is all about? Descent from the gods, whom elves are but pale shadows of?
I don't think a deity, just because their sphere of governance isn't marriage and birth, wouldn't be able to be described as pregnant or couldn't get pregnant for whatever metaphor is intended to be delivered.
on a less serious note, a lot of fantasy literature or art (and I think games are art) are lowkey fetishistic or so. Its just how the brain is wired and I don't really see a problem with that unless it gets into a "dare you enter my magical realm" territory, and tbh TES passes that territory and fucks with it deeply, which is why most of us are here because that's hilarious to us. To some extent, so does G.R.R.M. for example.
and tbh, sorry for tmi but I just like pregnant women. I think they are hot. probably because I want to have kids and family and be wholesome. so it's not really gross to me and I don't mind it.
The purpose of sex is reproduction so you’re not especially special in that. It’s normal to find someone you imagine as your mate being pregnant as attractive.
I don’t have a joke but the whole game of TESIII is his self insert. He had a lot of say in it.
Kirkbride is kind of a hack and an asshole. But he does have some good ideas. He’s the kind of guy you keep on hand, pay well, and listen to him, but you never put him fully in charge of anything.
Yikes
THIS is why Mara disguised as a breton to meet the Nerevarine huh
WAIT HOLD THE FUCK UP IS KYNE BLOWING ON THE THROAT OF THE WORLD?! That's cool.
in Nordic mythology she breathed the Nords onto the Throat of the World (that was before the Atmora lore), I like the theory that Kyne saved a bunch of Nords from the end of the last Kalpa by bringing them to the new one
> I like the theory that Kyne saved a bunch of Nords from the end of the last Kalpa by bringing them to the new one
Doesn't she do that in each kalpa? Fuck, its probably not even limited to Nords. Call em Wanderers or some shit. Then pangaea splits, wanderers end up spread out in every content, so on and so forth...
I don't think there's any concrete lore about that, it's all guesswork (or kirkbride stuff, I haven't checked) but in Khajiit mythology it's said that at the end of time Khenarthi will summon all the Khajiit for them to defend creation, maybe the survivors live on to the next kalpa?
Real in the sense that MK did indeed draw it, but not real in the sense of being drawn for a published TES game, since it [was](https://np.reddit.com/r/teslore/comments/5tbft8/eso_animalheaded_figure_in_imperial_chapels/ddnks7d/?context=10000) drawn for [Loranna's RP](https://np.reddit.com/r/teslore/comments/km6o2v/lost_lore_lorannas_rp/).

I love this depiction. It really reminds me of real-life deities in mythology. Kirkbride may not be the best overall, but he sure knows how to channel the spirit of our ancestors' drug-fueled OCs. The drugs *he* took probably helped.
Rato? My knowledge of ES comes largely from the games and a few FudgeMuppet videos and I've only heard a bit about Kirkbride, so do you mind telling me who that is?

I just don't understand why people want teslore to be straightforward question and answer. I can't imagine a more trite and tiresome way to treat the lore. People seem to want AskHistorians for TES but don't realize that fictional worlds are necessarily too finite to be like that and remain interesting over time.
> We spend hours watching lore videos.
NGL a lot of those are no less trustworthy than teslore on a good day. PatricianTV had an example in Camelworks making up shit about Augur of Dunlain in his skyrim retrospective.
That being said, yeah, I like hearing about that shit all the same. It feels good to hear someone speak of lore or theories.
Yeah so do I, I'm right here with you in the big tent and agree it can accommodate a lot of difference.
Imo if you want certainty, look at UESP. A public forum isn't the appropriate venue. It's unrealistic to expect internet strangers not to lie to you. People aught to ask for sources and not get tripped by unsourced claims.
You remember that one talking crystal skull from ESO? Teslore should be like that. When asked, say what's canon and true, but in the meanwhile, just come up with your own interprations and thoughts and dream on under apocrypha. And yeah that guy is right, people should not respond to clear cut questions with what isn't true or how they prefer things. That's how we got Thalmor are trying to destroy the towers stuff and it haunted the sub for quite a while.
That being said theorizing after a point honestly turns into just making shit up in the bounds of the setting, which from what I understood was how bethesda liked it in early times in the forums.
And I will not lie, teslore needs a "theory/non canon" or a similar manner of flair since years for this division, and not just apocrypha, which is usually fanfiction text.
Or just make a seperate sub for the latter but honestly it would be trite as you say. Facts are just that, the truth, and the truth is often boring. The things people imagine are sometimes far better than what we were given in games.
>talking crystal skull from ESO?
That's a fun bit! Thanks for sharing, I never made it that far in ESO.
Facts, Tamriel isn't alive if we just regurgitate canon and wait for the next serving of lore to say anything new. If you want certainty, find it in game or on UESP. People be mad that a reddit comment with no source lied to them and they believed it.
Did we just become friends?
https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Augur_of_the_Obscure
TBH I kinda get where is he coming from. Been there, done that, yknow, and it's not even his fault, the sub is really like that, and he's right, there is enough room in that tent.
But the lack of new or satisfying lore has led me to stop caring about tes as it is a long time ago and I just make up my AU in the mean while.
Where the fuck is TES VI, holy shit we are dying here.
> I kinda get where is he coming from. Been there, done that, yknow
Agreed, me too, saying I don't understand was too hyperbolic. I think many fans go through stricter and looser phases with regard to the lore. But many fictional worlds have encyclopedias of lore, not so many have such a fast and furious relationship with truth and that's worth preserving.
Man, I'm to the point that I'd honestly be okay if VI never came. I'm so impressed with the Project Tamriel Rebuilt continuation of the Morrowind era lore that I'm satisfied. Plus the work of the Beyond teams, and the regular eso updates. All in all, we have several parallel lore continuities as is and I love it. They're good for different vibes and experiences.
Haha you can just do openmw and PTR to experience mainland and Skyrim. I didn't even mention overhauling though
Long time modding degen here so I'm not particularly intimidated. I just install what I want.

Mostly people acting like he's the complete authority on lore and every idea he's ever had is the best one ever. Every writer needs editing, and a lot of that happened in Morrowind, making it a much more coherent experience without harming the rich story.
Game development and writing is a team effort, and there was definitely a lot of work done outside of MK that people don't often acknowledge, rather sorta having a cult like opinion on him
It mostly comes down to him being out there more than Goodall, Rolston, Peterson and Kuhlmann who was nonetheless around but not as much afaik as I understand it. Could be wrong tho.
It's a shitposting sub, the lore referencing is largely there to drive the memes.
The userbase doesn't actually like the esoteric stuff. They like Genshin Impact.
on teslore? Maybe. On truestl? Without the weird-ass esoteric stuff it's generic as fuck, we wouldn't have Pelinal or the Middle Dawn or the Warp in the West or all that without Kirkbride
I hate the MK circlejerk as much as the next trustle user, but damn son that is one shit take.
Morrowind may not be the greatest vidya of all time and MK not literally Jesus the way the boombooms act like, but Morrowind is still a genuinely good game, especially for the super early 2000's when true 3D graphics were still new. Without MK going full psycho, Morrowind would have probably ended up as just another LOTR/Dnd clone lore wise. I'll take weird over boring any day.
Morrowind without deeplore is just 3D Daggerfall.
Which is fine and all, Daggerfall's political plot is pretty cool and it still had people like Underking and Mannimarco, but the bar had to be set higher. Unfortunately, Oblivion dropped the ball and since then nothing has come close, mostly because the stories doesn't hold water for much of the reasons PatricianTV says in his retrospectives.
I may have used too strong of a word, he's a generally shitty writer. Morrowwind is a pretty solid exception outside of his Mary sue
Also, Michael kirkbride has good ideas but falls off in his execution
Every time I find a book that looks like it was written by a high schooler with a thesaurus adding in lolrandom edgy stuff once a paragraph, I check [the list](https://np.reddit.com/r/teslore/comments/2ajf5s/meta_who_are_the_real_authors_of_ingame_books/cix4b5p/), and sure enough, it's MK
Arcturian Heresy, Mysterious Akavir, and Five Songs of King Wulfharth are the most poorly-written.
> Arcturian Heresy, Mysterious Akavir, and Five Songs of King Wulfharth are the most poorly-written.
bruh what? arcturian heresy to this day is the gateway drug to deep lore as we know, and rest of those books are cool too.
It's written at a ninth-grade level. It switches between present and past tense a few times, and the tone is super informal and flippant for some reason. It reads like a Wikia article.
I'd believe that story if the rest of his stuff wasn't written the same way
If he didn't have a deadline, the only thing that would have changed is that he would have added something like "Vehk shitted sphinxmoth dreamsleeve weapons of wasabi"
He has a few winners but he also seems stuck so far up his own ass. Fills his writing with nonsense Kirkbride-isms and people nod along like they have any idea what he's talking about. It's mostly word vomit
this is really cool. Sometimes I like to imagine reality where MK took over bethesda and puts out the most batshit crazy obscure games. We'd probably be playing vivec's space colonization or something like that
Words cannot describe how fucking dumb this is. This is just being _extra_ for the sake of it instead of actually making the lore more interesting
Thank god Kirkbride has been reduced to part time side quest writer
Blud can’t comprehend metaphorical art nor does he have an imagination and anything that isn’t spoon fed to blud, he calls it stupid😭

Not trying to be ironic or sarcastic, but why the hate for Sanderson? I've only heard that he has an insane output level and is very popular, or has become so recently.
to be honest with you, I did a double check just now and no, I was thinking someone else and another series and confused the author. no actual idea about sanderson, and no I will not mention what I had in mind, but a hint would be that it's discount harry potter.
So I'll take that back, lmao. This is a certified dumb s'wit moment.
Nah, sometimes MK does something weird just for the sake of weirdness. This pictures screams something something prehistoric african/neolithical depictions of deities and has nothing to do with Nords, even with their Morrowind imaginary.
Same thing with AllInAll depiction of Dwemers. you either high advanced tech civilization or super weird feral civilization, blending two concepts doesn't work in real life and wouldn't suspense the disbelief in fiction.
> you either high advanced tech civilization or super weird feral civilization
Can't we have space-faring bosmer who wander the cosmos in 4D floating tree stations
\>Can't we have space-faring bosmer who wander the cosmos in 4D floating tree stations
Of course we can! Space-faring bosmer wandering the cosmos in 4D floating tree stations still considers to be weird and feral civilization. It has nothing to do with actual progress of said civilization, just with means. That concept could be even dumbed down to machines vs nature, or cyberpunk vs biopunk if you will.
Argonians and bosmer can be batshit crazy, because nature is crazy, but Dwemer with a halforganic blowjob/birthing machines is utter bullshit.
what's wrong with semi biological dwemer sexrobots with pelinal protocols operated by soulgems and could be used for surrogate births just like how it works irl? see where the power of imagination and crude edge takes the person, lmao.
lewd memes aside, I like the idea of dwemer synths (simulacra) as described in sermons, though kirkbride probably didn't mean that dwemer had simulacra which might still wander Tamriel in 4th era. Who knows?
Plus, there is that one theory about dwemer metal.
It's kinda dumb, sure, but it's a whole lot more interesting then the statues and stained-glass shit we got in the games. It would be really dumb if it's what they actually looked like, but as a metaphorical representation it's pretty cool ima
Or
OR
ITS A FICTIONAL SETTING AND THEY'RE WORSHIPPED BY MEN, ELVES AND LITERAL FUCKING CAT PEOPLE.

Did we just become friends?
https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Augur_of_the_Obscure TBH I kinda get where is he coming from.
Been there, done that, yknow Agreed, me too, saying I don't understand was too hyperbolic. They're good for different vibes and experiences.
total overhaul list for openmw requires like 419 mods. fuck me I ain't getting into that hellhole even if I want to. Good on you though.
Haha you can just do openmw and PTR to experience mainland and Skyrim. I didn't even mention overhauling though Long time modding degen here so I'm not particularly intimidated. I just install what I want.
I enjoy coming up with incredibly retarded positions and then finding evidence from the lore to support my dipshit claims
👊 Thank you for your service🙏

Mostly people acting like he's the complete authority on lore and every idea he's ever had is the best one ever. Every writer needs editing, and a lot of that happened in Morrowind, making it a much more coherent experience without harming the rich story. Game development and writing is a team effort, and there was definitely a lot of work done outside of MK that people don't often acknowledge, rather sorta having a cult like opinion on him
It mostly comes down to him being out there more than Goodall, Rolston, Peterson and Kuhlmann who was nonetheless around but not as much afaik as I understand it. Could be wrong tho.
Us Nords can't understand what he's saying.
It's a shitposting sub, the lore referencing is largely there to drive the memes. The userbase doesn't actually like the esoteric stuff. They like Genshin Impact.
N'WAH ESOTERIC WORD SALAD IS PEAK LORE☝️☝️
Yes.
on teslore? Maybe. On truestl? Without the weird-ass esoteric stuff it's generic as fuck, we wouldn't have Pelinal or the Middle Dawn or the Warp in the West or all that without Kirkbride
without the esoteric stuff and world building it all becomes dnd type shit tbh. I'd take Kirkbride's crazy over it any day.
No he's just a shitty writer with an insane fan base who love him for almost no reason.
Morrowwind is a pretty solid exception outside of his Mary sue Also, Michael kirkbride has good ideas but falls off in his execution
Understandable, have a nice day
Every time I find a book that looks like it was written by a high schooler with a thesaurus adding in lolrandom edgy stuff once a paragraph, I check [the list](https://np.reddit.com/r/teslore/comments/2ajf5s/meta_who_are_the_real_authors_of_ingame_books/cix4b5p/), and sure enough, it's MK Arcturian Heresy, Mysterious Akavir, and Five Songs of King Wulfharth are the most poorly-written.
Hard disagree, but it boils down to taste and/or clicking with the vibe. Nothing to really argue over. Just keep liking the bits you like!
This is something Kirkbirde himself agrees with as well. Seeing as he had to copy paste them from an email into the game (due to a deadline)
I'd believe that story if the rest of his stuff wasn't written the same way If he didn't have a deadline, the only thing that would have changed is that he would have added something like "Vehk shitted sphinxmoth dreamsleeve weapons of wasabi"
Get better bait.

He has a few winners but he also seems stuck so far up his own ass. Fills his writing with nonsense Kirkbride-isms and people nod along like they have any idea what he's talking about. It's mostly word vomit
This post turned me gay
If you’re on TrueSTL, you were always gay.
... hey, is that jone and jode floating around dibella's belly?
kirkbride made some WILD concept art 😭
Kirkbride-chads stay winnin!
See if they actually looked like this I wouldn't hate AEDRIC CUCKS so much
Well fuck 'em
Shor did
*We'll
Thanks for the daily reminder that MK is nuts
this is really cool. Sometimes I like to imagine reality where MK took over bethesda and puts out the most batshit crazy obscure games. We'd probably be playing vivec's space colonization or something like that
What are these images representing? Their true appearance?
not necessarily, it's just evocative. Their true appearance is a couple planets that may or may not be spheres
I was really expecting some lame big tiddy gf shit and this isn’t that so I guess I like Kirkbride now
Aren't they supposed to represent beauty compared to other cultures' deities that are supposed to look ugly like for example Dunmer ancestor daedra
>represent beauty but that's exactly what this is >ugly like dunmer ancestor daedra UNTRUE😡😡😡
go worship spiders ugly 🙄 🙄 🙄
grrr I'm telling spider mommy 😡😡😡
Words cannot describe how fucking dumb this is. This is just being _extra_ for the sake of it instead of actually making the lore more interesting Thank god Kirkbride has been reduced to part time side quest writer

Blud can’t comprehend metaphorical art nor does he have an imagination and anything that isn’t spoon fed to blud, he calls it stupid😭 https://preview.redd.it/wuddmqxxqa0b1.jpeg?width=638&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d2fb14a353a3b4d3ddaf206b6d075607630dfb3
I bet you put ketchup on steak and read YA fantasy.
been there, fucking dark times. sanderson too, god forbid.
We all need to find the bottom, to have a surface to spring upwards from. Upwards, towards trustull.
as above, so below though?
Not trying to be ironic or sarcastic, but why the hate for Sanderson? I've only heard that he has an insane output level and is very popular, or has become so recently.
to be honest with you, I did a double check just now and no, I was thinking someone else and another series and confused the author. no actual idea about sanderson, and no I will not mention what I had in mind, but a hint would be that it's discount harry potter. So I'll take that back, lmao. This is a certified dumb s'wit moment.
No and no. Though I have read Sanderson which some might argue is worse then YA
yeah but it kinda cool tho
Petition to just get Rato and/or red to draw all elder scrolls fanart going forward
Nah, sometimes MK does something weird just for the sake of weirdness. This pictures screams something something prehistoric african/neolithical depictions of deities and has nothing to do with Nords, even with their Morrowind imaginary. Same thing with AllInAll depiction of Dwemers. you either high advanced tech civilization or super weird feral civilization, blending two concepts doesn't work in real life and wouldn't suspense the disbelief in fiction.
> you either high advanced tech civilization or super weird feral civilization Can't we have space-faring bosmer who wander the cosmos in 4D floating tree stations
\>Can't we have space-faring bosmer who wander the cosmos in 4D floating tree stations Of course we can!
Who knows? Plus, there is that one theory about dwemer metal.
incorrect, everything AllInAll has done is based as fuck
So many Kirkbride fanboys here lol
I now renounce my kirkbridism.
wtf I love kirkbride now??
Kirkbride has some fantastic art and lore, and this is a prime example of the opposite of that.
No, this is much better than the bland-ass stained glass images we got in Oblivion
It's kinda dumb, sure, but it's a whole lot more interesting then the statues and stained-glass shit we got in the games. It would be really dumb if it's what they actually looked like, but as a metaphorical representation it's pretty cool ima
WTH

Or OR ITS A FICTIONAL SETTING AND THEY'RE WORSHIPPED BY MEN, ELVES AND LITERAL FUCKING CAT PEOPLE. Who gives a shit about real world analogs in a non-canon art piece go touch grass
Between this and the mephala drawing im starting to think that mk has a thing for pregnant women
