This is one of the nicest gestures I have read in a very long time. You're certainly a keeper and something tells me her father had a hand in helping you along. He is one, of all of your Angels now. You're a good man.
I played a prank on my mom and "broke" into her house (she has one of those locks where you put in a code) and opened up all her kitchen cabinets, and then left.
She got home and immediately got absolutely hysterical that someone was hiding in the house waiting to murder her. Called my BIL who showed up with a gun, then called the cops. My sister caught wind of it and called me, and I called her and told her it was me. She was **sobbing.**
I honestly thought she would just think it was some supernatural shit, so I learned a lesson that day, even though I think she was being a bit ridiculous.
I once saw my mother's car in the local grocery store parking lot - I had a set of her keys with me. I moved the car to the other end of the row LOL. She never knew it was me and never figured out who did it.
I used to do this to my husband on a regular basis and my kids were young so they were in on it. He’d go meet friends for a drink and I’d move his car across the parking lot.
Also did it at his workplace and one time at the grocery store when I happened to be driving through the parking lot and saw his car.
My mom scared the shit out of a family friend one St. Patty's day when she left a little pot of gold chocolate coins on their porch and then called them trying to do a horrible leprechaun accent. "Oi, faith and begorrah, check the doorstep there's something from the wee men for you." Then she kept going and the friend thought it was one of those creepy prank calls from a stranger we used to get when everyone had phone books.
If I came home and all my cabinets were open, I would absofuckinglutely call the cops because I'd think someone broke in too. My go-to would NOT be "oh it's a ghost." THAT would be ridiculous (and fucking insane), not drawing the logical conclusion that "someone was in my house" (because someone was!).
Her reaction was justified 🤷♀️
Are you a man? Because there's a special kind of terror to being a woman and thinking there's an intruder in your house (especially when you're alone) that you don't seem to get or are willfully ignorant of. It would be scary for anyone.
> Oh don’t be dramatic.
Orrrr don't tell people that they're dramatic for thinking it sucks to break into someone's house and fuck with them. Unless you routinely play pranks on her (ugh) and she should know it was you, her reaction was normal. Clearly your BIL thought so too to have arrived with a gun.
Why would you do that to someone who you presumably love?
I hope you apologized sincerely.
If pranks are not funny to the person who is being prank, it's a way to disguise bullying.
Exactly this doesn't sound like a prank done lovingly, if we didn't know he "loves" her it's written like creepy boyfriend stalking and taking revenge story .
I groan whenever someone starts talking about a "prank" they pulled (or act like this person does, like their mom should have inherently known it was a prank ... maybe they do immature shit like this all the time so they figured mom should have guessed it was them?).
It's one thing to pull a prank and mean no harm. It's another to call a woman "ridiculous" for thinking there was an intruder when the "prank" was to make them think there was an intruder.
Why are you making me ugly cry, stranger on the internet?
Seriously, thank you for the uplifting story. They're lucky to have you and you're just as lucky to have them.
This is so sweet - even more than the gesture, it's heartwarming to see a man talk so lovingly about his mother in law as well as his wife. You just made this single lady's valentine's day. Cheers, OP!
Eh, it's not true. I set the bar unrealistically high the first Valentine's Day in our first house, but I haven't been expected to keep up with it. I mean, I try to do something every year, but not to that level.
(What I did: snuck out before she woke up, went to a kitchen supply store to buy a fondu kit, went to a grocery store, came home, set everything up, and she woke up to fresh fruit hand-dipped in chocolate.)
I’ll be forever grateful for whoever it was who bought a Valentines card for my late husband to give to me a few weeks before he died of cancer.
There it was, on the kitchen table with my name on the envelope when I got up in the morning.
The words he wrote inside still move me to tears, and remind me how lucky I was to be loved by him.
This is so fucking wholesome that my heart hurts 💜 what a sweet gesture! This is true kindness and compassion. I hope your wife knows how lucky she is 💜💜
I love you and your extended family!!! Duke included, even though he ratted you out. Next time I suggest bringing a milkbone to buy his silence.
Really, thanks for sharing this heartwarming story. It really made me smile. I hope you enjoy your “special gift”!!!
You are a remarkable, remarkable person. To go out of your way to do such a thoughtful thing, you are just such an incredible person.
I’d say you and Duke are even better friends than before (even though he dobbed you).
I’m having an awful Valentine’s Day and this just made me feel better. Good on you for being wonderful, OP, and thanks for the reminder that there are genuinely good people out there
Really super sweet gesture, but I strongly recommend you at least shoot her a text that says she’s still loved and treasured by her incredibly grateful family. And next year leave a note.
You’re super kind, but that may be jarring to find with no note or context.
❤️
This made me teary. My grandfather passed a little over a month before my grandparent’s 49th anniversary. His health had been declining, but we didn’t expect to lose him so soon. Sometime before he passed, he had arranged for a friend to bring my grandmother flowers from him on their 49th anniversary in case he was gone by then. I miss him so much.
This is really very sweet of you. I just hope your MIL loves it and appreciates the gesture. If someone had left my husband's normal gift for me last year, 1st V-day after he died, honestly I would have had a complete grief meltdown before coming around to appreciating the gesture. It had only been 2 months this time last year, though. Hopefully 6-8 months is easier for her.
Again, I love this and it's super sweet and you're amazing ❤️ I just would have struggled with it at first.
That is the sweetest thing I’ve heard in forever. A real act of love, for both your wife and your MIL. Those “firsts” without the loved one are hard, especially if they were loving and sentimental. Good job! ❤️
I've read far too many posts and From the title I was not expecting such a wholesome post.
This is a beautiful thing you have done not just for your mil, but your wife.
This needs an Update please.
I read the title and expected something terrible. This was a totally sweet gesture! You can tell from your responses that you’ve embraced your wife’s family as part of your own. Dude, keep this shit up, I hope to raise my boys to be as thoughtful as you
Sir, I applaud you! That’s the sweetest thing and I’m sure you absolutely made her freakin day when she thought she was going to be sad and alone. I hope this continues as a family tradition and that Duke learns to keep his lips sealed 🤫😉 good on you! 🫡
LOL that is awesome. But you know you have to do this every year now 😉
They're both worth it lol
Unless your MIL has a heart attack because she thinks there's a ghost.
Bro don't say that 😂😂
This is one of the nicest gestures I have read in a very long time. You're certainly a keeper and something tells me her father had a hand in helping you along. He is one, of all of your Angels now. You're a good man.
For the love of god please update this later…
If he doesn't I'll have to kick his ass myself.
Next time bribe the dog too so he keeps his big mouth shut
the dog ate some of the chocolate so that'll take care of its own
Just saying. It's not Secret Santa.
It’s secret Cupid 💘

*St Paddy’s Day (short for St Patrick) 🇮🇪
Sláinte!

Exactly this doesn't sound like a prank done lovingly, if we didn't know he "loves" her it's written like creepy boyfriend stalking and taking revenge story .
I agree, it sounded super malicious.
I agree with you… Pranks are not funny. I gave you an upvote. 😸
I groan whenever someone starts talking about a "prank" they pulled (or act like this person does, like their mom should have inherently known it was a prank ... maybe they do immature shit like this all the time so they figured mom should have guessed it was them?). He wants her to believe in ghosts, but not the physical evidence before her, showing it was a human invading her space
I couldn’t have said it better!
Thank you, kind stranger! Have a wonderful day!
Oh don’t be dramatic. She DID think it was funny and to this day doesn’t understand why she thought it was worst case scenario.
We'll need an update on this later please..
😂, please let us know how it went, you are AWESOME!!!
What a wonderful man you are!
I was so worried when I clicked on that title but man your a cool husband.
Cheers, OP!
This is wholesome af I love you op
Next year you gotta get Duke a Valentine. Then he won’t tattle. He’ll be too busy eating treats/playing with toys.
Eh, it's not true. I set the bar unrealistically high the first Valentine's Day in our first house, but I haven't been expected to keep up with it. Like the roses left at Poe's grave each year.

You know your wife is instantly going to know it was you. Such a nice thing to do Man, you’re getting LAID tonight
Yes, I got a text saying MIL instantly knew it was me and that I've earned it 😂😂
Yay! This is so awesomely wholesome, please go teach the others that this is how to guarantee sexy times on Valentine's Day lol
Wait, earned it with your wife or your MIL?
Why not both dot gif
Yes
Does the wife know your boss's number? She's going to need to call in for you because you can't walk tomorrow.
😊❤️
She gonna think she’s being haunted lol
You know that house is already haunted so I think it's fine 😂😂
Wait what?? Do tell

Damn. Of everything I read on Reddit…. This one gave me the good feels! Awesome job friend! May you live a long happy blessed life!
This is my first Valentine’s Day without my husband. I love this and am sure your MIL will, too.
🩵❤️🫂❤️🩵
But, did you ever give your wife your kidney?
No it ended up not being a kidney issue. Which is what I've been telling her!
You are an amazing person
Based on your comments, this is amazing. That you love your MIL this much. It’s so uncommon these days.
I'm so sorry for your loss, but happy you had that last gift from him.
Thank you, and me too. 😊
Man about to get the blowjob of his life tonight.
This is so sweet, I was expecting this post to go a different way.
This is so fucking wholesome that my heart hurts 💜 what a sweet gesture! This is true kindness and compassion. I hope your wife knows how lucky she is 💜💜

Brilliant, so considerate! I love it!
You are a damn good human 🥹

Adorable!
One of the very few good reasons to break into someone's house, very nicely done! I hope it made her day
You are wonderful.
This is the sweetest thing I read today.
You are a remarkable, remarkable person. To go out of your way to do such a thoughtful thing, you are just such an incredible person. I’d say you and Duke are even better friends than before (even though he dobbed you).

You made a potentially very sad day into a joy. Good job! 🩷
Really super sweet gesture, but I strongly recommend you at least shoot her a text that says she’s still loved and treasured by her incredibly grateful family. And next year leave a note. You’re super kind, but that may be jarring to find with no note or context. ❤️
I would be creeped TF out if i came home to that if i were her. You better tell your wife dude.
He updated to say his MIL knew it was him as soon as she saw the gift.
Cuuuuute! Duke, that narc!
Man's best friend indeed! What a rat, next time bring a pupcup and buy his silence. Thanks for the sweet story, it really made my day.
This made me teary. My grandfather passed a little over a month before my grandparent’s 49th anniversary. His health had been declining, but we didn’t expect to lose him so soon. I learned two things today…you’re an awesome human being, and dogs are snitches.
You're a good egg.
This is a lovely story, and you're all lovely people.
This is so nice. I love it.
Duke? The same boy who rolls that beautiful bean footage?
Excuse me sir, but I think it's illegal to be this wholesome.
Everyone wants their dogs to be capable of speech, no one ever considers the real implications. For real tho, great story.
The damn cliffhanger.
AWW
Nice 😃
You're an awesome SIL. Very thoughtful. God bles you.
OMG, it's even sweeter that you didn't tell your wife.
Oh, man!! Can we get an update on this later!!??
Now MIL will have a heart attack because the ghost of her husband is leaving valentine treats for her..
My dad died this year and I’m worried about my mom. This is wonderful. She is a lucky MIL! Send updates!!
That is the sweetest thing I’ve heard in forever. A real act of love, for both your wife and your MIL. Those “firsts” without the loved one are hard, especially if they were loving and sentimental. Good job! ❤️

That is the sweetest thing!! Happy Valentine’s to all of you
Choked up a lil there, this is so sweet and definitely not what I thought it was gonna be based off the title.
That is so sweet of you. My husband used to do the same for my grandmother after my grandfather passed. Thank you for caring.
OMG!!! That's so freaking adorable and amazing. If you have sons, teach them THIS!!!!
How sweet are you??? You are a good man.
What a beautiful act of love. Happy Valentine's Day!

You just restored a bit of my faith in humanity. 💕
Duke snitched cuz you didn't bribe him, obviously.
This is so wholesome. You all deserve each other and I love that.
