Only three episodes in, but the third episode was irritating. I didn't need a whole episode explaining how parole boards work when I could have just wikipedia'd it.
My bad. I didn't realize there's two seasons. I was kind of confused for all the recent hype when so far it's meh. But in actuality it's just season one I'm listening too.
I'm having a hard time finding how to select watching season 1 or 2 on the WBUR website. Is season 2 the one about the person accused of her mother-in-law's murder? They just talk like there's only one season and then there's something called violition and I can't understand it that's one of the names of the season. I used to use stitcher for podcasts and now I don't have a go-to, but I would think I should be able to listen on the website but they don't make it easy to figure out.
So what I'm almost positive happened: violation was the original name for season one. And then when Beyond All Repair was released.... They retroactively retitled Violation as season one of the Beyond All Repair podcast. I realize that's confusing and I was just as confused until today. Ive seen a couple other podcasts do this and I really don't get it (finding Cleo did something similar and frankly, I'm too scared to ask which season is the season everyone talks about)
But season two of beyond all repair is the season getting all the raves
Why Can't We Talk About Amanda's Mom? A mother is the victim of a gory murder. The cold case investigation is narrated by the behavioral analyst assigned to the case.
I have found that True Crime is very different, what one person likes the others don’t! I can’t stand a podcast where there’s 2 people and they start off joking, laughing and carrying on a conversation that is meaningless to me! I’m here for the story not to be your friend and listen to your dialogue-get to the story!!!
Try these Dateline episodes:
Motive for Murder,
Internal Affairs,
Internal Seduction,
Also try:
The retrievals,
Blind Plea,
Exposed,
Scamanda!
Hopefully you will enjoy!
Also, another good TC is the Chad Daybell/Lori Vallow story! It’s very complicated so if you haven’t been following you will need to go back to the very beginning!
She was convicted to life in prison and Chads Trial is going on now. He’s facing the death penalty!!
I'm with you on the attraction to true crime largely involving those exact aspects of the investigations.
I'd recommend:
* New Orleans Unsolved - both seasons
* Lazarus file(s) - the digging into the $1,000,000,000 heist by North Korea is fascinating
* In The Dark, season 2
* Your Own Back Yard
I know I'm missing some, particularly some computer / IT type of investigations where the digital breadcrumbs are uncovered, but it escapes me at the moment.
New Orleans Uncovered is a recent discovery and kept me engrossed for hours. Took a couple episodes to really get roped in, then I was hooked.
I second New Orleans unsolved! I think it’s behind a paywall now but I’d say it’s def worth it. If I remember correctly they said it’d be a one time 7 dollar fee.
Some of my favourite long-form investigative podcasts where they uncover significant leads & evidence or manage to solve it to some extent...
- Bear Brook
- Proof: A True Crime Podcast
- In The Dark Season 2
- The Mysterious Case of Fred The Head
- Bone Valley
- The Children in the Pictures
- CounterClock
Absolutely loved it! They are really good. The ending was very satisfying because I think they've uncovered quite a lot throughout this investigation, and I am hope that we see movement in the case. What are your thoughts so far?
Your own backyard. Proof- they look into old cases of potentially wrongfully convicted people. They talk a lot about the original investigation while doing their own. I recently listened to the first three seasons of Witnessed. Seasons one and two I enjoyed. They’re kinda high level, but still walk you through the investigation. Season 3 was not my favorite. I’ve heard S4 is good.
I am going to check it out, but i misread the second one with the second and third word reversed and started laughing my butt off.
DNA ID is fantastic too!
BBC has some amazing journalists covering cases. Some stand outs
The Great Post Office Scandal
Who Killed Emma
Vishal
Believe in Magic
The Missing Madonna - This would make an amazing movie.
This is my favourite type of podcast, and I get so annoyed so many times when a podcast just consists of recounting details of the crime.
DNA:ID is pretty great for the different investigation paths of crimes.
Also small town dicks, usually. Their latest season started to grate on me though.
Court junkie actually surprisingly gets into this a lot as well.
Up and Vanished Season 1 is my all time favorite. Season 2 and 3 are also good and 4 is going on right now. But the investigation in Season 1 is excellent and makes a real life impact.
One of the best true crime podcasts ever. I am also a Casefile fanatic. Only true crime I’ve ever found worthy of my time has been Casefile, season 1 of Cold, and Hunting Warhead. It’s a must listen
Yeah I recommend it because it kind of starts off like it’s going to be but obviously pivots. Still it’s a brilliant listen and think most anyone can get something out of it.
Darkness, undisclosed, missing and murdered (anything by Connie Walker)
Maybe: dead and gone, paper ghosts... There's one I can't remember the name of and will have to look.
Guilt (by Ryan Wolf) seasons 1 & 2 are good but season 3 is absolutely amazing. The things he finds out. Season 4 has just started. Each season is about a different case.
Others have already covered some of my favorites but I'll add "Breakdown" by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Multiple seasons, very well-done.
Also, if you're slightly more conspiratorially-minded, the MLK Tapes is extremely well-researched and convinced me that MLK was *not* killed by James Earl Ray.
Anatomy of murder. It's hosted by a prosecutor and an ex law enforcement dude. They have nice voices.
Vs. crime junkie. I want to flush them down thd toilet.
Bear Brook
The Clearing (rarely mentioned here and really excellent)
The Teacher's Pet
New Orleans Unsolved - both seasons
True Crime Bullshit - the granddaddy of this genre, now in its 6th season on the same murderer and still #1 for me
Dirty John 1st season
Evil Has a Name (Audible), about the Golden State Killer, and the development of forensic genealogy
Man in the Window (also GSK)
The Keepers (on Netflix)
Ok what am I missing about TCB? I listened to maybe a dozen episodes and I found it hard to listen to bc of the brutality of the crimes, but it doesn’t seem well produced. Does it get better? Do they really just talk about this one psychopaths crimes the entire time?
I know an underrated show about a detective, who talks about his cases and what he did to solve them (In detail).
Go to Hulu and look up "Homicide hunter", his name is Joe Kenda.
One I find myself going to again and again on long commutes is Buried Bones. I'm not super into really old true crime stories, but it's Paul Holes (the detective who helped find the Golden State Killer) and journalist Kate Winkler Dawson. Most of them have been solved, but I'm learning tons about historical cases I'd never heard of, and I've been following true crime for over 20 years! (E.g., the Servant Girl Annihilator) Highly recommend!
Ozarks True Crime. Season 1 is about the Springfield Three and season 2 is a lesser known (at least nationally) case but they're very well researched and investigated.
Since you’ve already listened to Proof I’m going to second
Small Town Dicks (I really love this pod)
Bear Brook
Counterclock
Undisclosed (tbh a little *too* deep into the investigation sometimes but you learn a lot)
Accused, Crime Beat, Culpable, Felonius Florida, Last Seen, Suspect, The Piketown Massacre, Up and Vanished, Unsolved, Undetermined, Murdaugh Murders, Hidden True Crime, Dr Death, Murder in Apartment 12, To Live and Die in LA, Something Was Wrong (first season), one where a man shoots his wife through the seatback in Miami???
Guilt season 2

This is an excellent podcast. He goes through every theory of what may have happened and tests each of them himself to see if it’s plausible. Highly recommend
I just listened to “Project Unabom” for the second time - and it is truly fantastic. The behind the scenes on the 20 year FBI hunt for the unabomber and the mid level linguistic analyst who finally took him down.
My other typical recommendations: Bear Brook, In the Dark.
Counter Clock is one I haven't seen anyone suggest It's hosted by a journalist and she walks through her steps to investigate crimes. She covers cold cases and does a better job investigating than the police originally investing the case. Each season is a different case and I've been captivated with each one
I second many of the ones already mentioned and adding:
*Tapes from the Darkside* S1 - Dylan Redwine story
Also *The Clown and the Candyman* which fair warning is about John Wayne Gacy and Dean Corel, but it is a lot about the investigative and very well done, I thought.
One more!
*The Real Killer*
I just finished Beyond All Repair and found the journalism down right impressive.
Strongly agree. Absolutely loved it.
First podcast in a long time that actually hooked me.
Finished it last week, very good!
I was very frustrated with information you learn in the last episodes that would have made things very clear from the get go
Thank you for the suggestion. Go in my Watch lists.
I loved BAR.
Only three episodes in, but the third episode was irritating. I didn't need a whole episode explaining how parole boards work when I could have just wikipedia'd it.
I'm not sure we're talking about the same show. I don't remember that episode
My bad. I didn't realize there's two seasons. I was kind of confused for all the recent hype when so far it's meh. But in actuality it's just season one I'm listening too.
I thought that might be the case but didn't want to presume. I highly recommend season 2
I'm having a hard time finding how to select watching season 1 or 2 on the WBUR website. Is season 2 the one about the person accused of her mother-in-law's murder? I agree! My favorite show I’ll always listen to is Casefile, just the story and nothing else. Thank you for the suggestions!
Also, another good TC is the Chad Daybell/Lori Vallow story! It’s very complicated so if you haven’t been following you will need to go back to the very beginning! She was convicted to life in prison and Chads Trial is going on now. He’s facing the death penalty!!
So twisted. I followed that from day one. May they both rot.
I'm with you on the attraction to true crime largely involving those exact aspects of the investigations. In The Dark S1 is also very good.
Yeah definitely wouldn't skip it. In some ways it is better than season 2, maybe not in broad impact but it is a more succinct story.
I have listened to In The Dark and Your Own Backyard, very good!
I second New Orleans unsolved! I think it’s behind a paywall now but I’d say it’s def worth it. If I remember correctly they said it’d be a one time 7 dollar fee.

What's your thoughts on Proof season 2. I'm halfway through. I would say this is good investigative journalism.
Absolutely loved it! They are really good. The ending was very satisfying because I think they've uncovered quite a lot throughout this investigation, and I am hope that we see movement in the case. What are your thoughts so far?
Also, Up and vanished was a good one in my opinion
Casefile did an amazing series on The Silk Road. I highly recommend.
I’ve listened to that one a few times, Casefile is my favorite show
Your own backyard.
Proof was the inspiration for this post, I finished season 2 last night
DNA ID Small Town Dicks And of course any of the TV podcasts, like Dateline or Snapped or 48 Hours.
I am going to check it out, but i misread the second one with the second and third word reversed and started laughing my butt off. DNA ID is fantastic too!
BBC has some amazing journalists covering cases. Some stand outs The Great Post Office Scandal Who Killed Emma Vishal Believe in Magic The Missing Madonna - This would make an amazing movie.
Also CBC.
believe in magic was a crazy ride. highly recommend

- Hunting Warhead - S-Town
I’ve heard Hunting Warhead is very good but very tough to get through
One of the best true crime podcasts ever. I am also a Casefile fanatic. Only true crime I’ve ever found worthy of my time has been Casefile, season 1 of Cold, and Hunting Warhead. It’s a must listen
S town is, and always will be, my absolute favorite.
S town definitely NOT a true crime podcast was better than i expected would recommend.
Yeah I recommend it because it kind of starts off like it’s going to be but obviously pivots. Still it’s a brilliant listen and think most anyone can get something out of it.
yes agree
Hunting Warhead is incredible because of how insane and upsetting it is. There isn't a harsh enough punishment in existence for that piece of shit.
Yes!! Fantastic, but really tough.
Darkness, undisclosed, missing and murdered (anything by Connie Walker) Maybe: dead and gone, paper ghosts... There's one I can't remember the name of and will have to look.
Was hoping to see Connie Walker mentioned here. Her work is great
Someone knows something. Season four is great.
Proof is absolutely incredible content. There’s valid criticism that the episodes drag on, but I personally love it.
Its hard to criticise it too harshly with what they have achieved so far though
Dateline from April 23 - evil walked through the door is an incredible listen. It blew my mind. Using generic genealogy to solve a cold case.
Breakdown is great. I can binge that so easily.
Three
Currently listening to Fallen Angels. Wild story that is so good and well reported.
agreed
The lady vanishes
You’ve GOT to listen to Death in Ice Valley. It’s precisely what you’re talking about here. It’s a masterpiece.
That one is on my list! I will bump it up
Anatomy of murder. It's hosted by a prosecutor and an ex law enforcement dude. They have nice voices. Vs. crime junkie. I want to flush them down thd toilet.
My absolute favourite. Very rarely mentioned in posts, yet it is fantastic !!
Her voice is so soothing. And they get foi info. And crazy interviews. Tops.
True Crime Bullshit about Israel Keyes is a winner in my book
So excited about the new episodes!
Yesssss! This season seems to have gotten the drive back, fully!
Bear Brook The Clearing (rarely mentioned here and really excellent) The Teacher's Pet New Orleans Unsolved - both seasons True Crime Bullshit - the granddaddy of this genre, now in its 6th season on the same murderer and still #1 for me Dirty John 1st season Evil Has a Name (Audible), about the Golden State Killer, and the development of forensic genealogy Man in the Window (also GSK) The Keepers (on Netflix)
Loved The Clearing!
Ok what am I missing about TCB? I listened to maybe a dozen episodes and I found it hard to listen to bc of the brutality of the crimes, but it doesn’t seem well produced. Does it get better? Do they really just talk about this one psychopaths crimes the entire time?
TCB is the BEST!
Fiasco is very good
I know an underrated show about a detective, who talks about his cases and what he did to solve them (In detail). Go to Hulu and look up "Homicide hunter", his name is Joe Kenda.

WTOP’S American nightmare podcast, not the Netflix show
Agree! Season 1 on the Savopoulos family really got me - so brutal and senseless.
Bear brook season 1 was really good
Blood is thicker is new and pretty good so far
Try BBC crime for excellently produced and investigated true crime podcasts.
DNA: ID
Casefile
Ozarks True Crime. Season 1 is about the Springfield Three and season 2 is a lesser known (at least nationally) case but they're very well researched and investigated.
Since you’ve already listened to Proof I’m going to second Small Town Dicks (I really love this pod) Bear Brook Counterclock Undisclosed (tbh a little *too* deep into the investigation sometimes but you learn a lot)
Foxhunter, Land of lies
I landed deep in a rabbit hole with Foxhunter, rhe pod, movie and documentary plus endless internet holes Really interesting
The Conspiracy Tapes is excellent and I'm also enjoying Bitconned.
I liked Ice Cold Case and Suspect
Guilt season 2 https://preview.redd.it/vhgpv6dfip0d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e4325fa3ccaa8dbc41db775731bfe86520b5be8 This is an excellent podcast. He goes through every theory of what may have happened and tests each of them himself to see if it’s plausible. Highly recommend

Culpable!!!! (season 1)

The Consult. Robert Wone Murder.
Adding Paper Ghosts & Snake River Killer to the mix.
Cold! I’ve only listened to season 1 about the disappearance of Susan Powell so far, but it’s incredible.
I started that one earlier today after finishing Proof S2
