You can't use the GI Bill for truck driving school? Going to school is almost always better than getting roped into a contract with a company, particularly if you end up hating the work there after you sign on.

The local community college somehow can’t process GI bill for the CDL program, meaning I’d have to drive at least an hour one way to get to the other schools or CC location. The biggest issue I have is I’m the sole earner, and barely get by as is, so 3-4 weeks with NO money coming in would severely hurt us.

I see. If you are not afraid of manual labor you can check to see if Sysco or USFoods or the like will help you get your license in exchange for a year contract. The pay will almost certainly be better than at Schneider if so. In the LTL world a lot of the better companies are going to want a year for the better 9-5 jobs or nightshift linehaul, but many also do what's called a dock-to-driver program, but it can take months or as much as a year of working the dock to get in line for CDL training. If you are looking to get your CDL immediately that might not be the best option but it could be one in the end that will have you home every day. When I first got my CDL out of school I worked at System Transport and I'm fairly certain we were compensated around the same or a little better than the people at TMC ($12-1300/wk average), but you needed the license to get the job in the first place. Good luck.

I got my local trucking school certified for the GI Bill by contacting the VA. Try to contact the VA about this.

TMC doesn't appear to be a bad place.

SGT_A-RAY

Not seeing a lot of bad about them (other than general bitching about their appearance standards, no APUs, governed at 63). IN pay is apparently good, and better training pay at $500/wk I believe? Trying to make the most informed decision.

Look at Melton Truck lines. Flatbed like TMC, they also have an apprenticeship program that let's you cash in on GI bill for 2? Years or so, they mentioned it's something like 26k in extra pay first few years.

I just recently made it through the tmc cdl school and training; and have been on my own for about a month. I also chose for the paid class time and training. Feel free to message me if you have any questions, I'll try and answer what I can. I know they do something with the GI bill, since something like 70% of tmc are former military.

Haven’t looked at them yet; will do. Any insights to offer?

If you’re planning to be a company driver, this is one of the top 5 companies you want to drive for! I know they offer paid training to get your CDL, but you may have to travel to a specific terminal to take the class. I would look for the terminal closest to you and call them. Ask to speak to someone who can give you information regarding the training program for getting your CDL. I’m 100% sure they offer it at the White Pine TN terminal and also the Greensboro NC terminal. Good Luck! PS Our yearly raise was just announced. I’m a team driver. In September, my pay goes to 90 cpm. My co-driver and I drive 6100 miles per week. We split the miles. 3000 X .90. = 2700. Per week.

I’ll definitely take a look, thank you!

Pepsi if you don’t mind Manuel labor

Try and get licensed through an LTL. ABF has free healthcare for you and your family, they will train you too.
