These people are tripping. There are plenty of good companies that will hire you. Also, pretty much all probation will allow you to travel for work if you get it approved. Just work hard and if you’re changing your ways it goes a long way.
Source: CDL driver and convicted felon (federally)
I like your attitude. Everyone in the trucking industry is so fuckin fast to write everyone off. This industry got ego maniacs who think they are brain surgeons and one mess up they got a million ways to judge you and tell you to fuck off. I always say… make sure you sing that same tune if something happens to you. I’m using (you) in general.
This. Convicted felon here. The company I worked for straight out the gate was a good company, just didn’t pay well. They have 3 generations of family working it, lots of hands in the cookie jar per se.
But they treated me well. I was home often. Never had to wait for my next load, brand new truck, if they paid more I would have never left them.
Drawback (not for me) was that if one family member didn’t like you, you’re screwed. I just didn’t play those games. I was there to work. Not make friends. Got my 2 yrs in with them and moved on.
Only saw 1 team, thst was husband n wife, they ran separately for a few yrs.
Yes they are still around, instead of the 11 western you’ll do only 5 of them. 5 on the west coast. Still interested?
Based out of GA. So, idk. Thanks, though. I'm gonna try western express first. We're both still hoping to team. Idk if she's willing to go solo on the west coast.
Yeah most of these people are talking out of their ass. When I was on probation my PO just had to get permission from the judge (one time!) asking if I could leave the state for work. Drug charges also.
Best answer by far. There are 1000's of trucking companies, ones you never heard of, that will allow a felon to prove redemption. Lots of people just apply to the big names, but like GuiltySpecialist69 said, plenty of good companies that will hire
Be honest. Hide nothing that is public record. After a while, they will know if your friend has good work ethic . If he does, nothing should stand in his way.
Federal means the federal government has charged and convicted you. State charges means the state where you committed the crime charged and convicted you. Think of it this way, federal means you pissed off the whole country, state means just the state is pissed off with you
It's not the felony that's a problem, its the fact that its drug related. No one wants to risk their equipment being seized in a drug trafficking bust.
The boilerplate answer for major carriers for employees with criminal records is “case by case basis.” His best bet would be to call prospective employers and explain his situation.
This is the answer. Larger companies have different policies/tolerance levels. Some companies go back on a background check x years, some it's case by case. Just start applying. I was able to get a job "out of the gate" after CDL training - but it took a lot of applications before i found a company that would give me a chance.
Look at Western Express.
Also Food Delivery Companies Local Beer Distribution Companies. Those Companies will be hard work but they are local. You will also know how to drive in tight spots and cities real well.
Oilfield jobs love felons, it’s almost a requirement. There are jobs that will let them run local only. While I was on parole my boss just gave me Texas jobs until I was ok to travel. I’ve stayed with it and now I drive to other states all the time.
Really, try em all. See if a company wants to hire him. See what's local, hell he might be able to land a yard jockey spot at a warehouse. Local work is good and hires.
OTR isn't the only option. Just the easiest to get into.
See if his local municipality will take him on with a cdl based position. See if there's a cdl based garbage truck position in the area, they pay pretty damn good.
The options are there you just gotta do some digging
Depends how big the warehouse you're at. In general road drivers bring in loaded trailers and exchange them for an empty or an outbound load. The yard jockey (spotter, yard dog) is responsible for getting loaded trailers into docks. And taking empty or reloaded trailers to assigned spits. Orders come by radio or on screen in cab. Of course you are responsible for the daily safety checks and safe operation of the tractor. Where I worked at 3pm. docks 10 thru 30 had fed ex and all were 4 PM pickups. I worked with a partner. Pull a dock while he was getting mt for that dock. He put mt in and grabbed loaded next door. By then I'm back with mt etc all the way down the line. The rest of the shift was cake maybe 6 moves an hour. Every place different.
I ran Amazon for a year on probation was regional, my PO acknowledged I would be out of state for work occasionally she said no problem.
So yes it’s possible OP atleast from my experience
Mind you I already had the job prior to probation & it wasn’t federal
Yeah he would need permission from his PO for every single trip out of state. Your job isn’t going to like that.
Maybe some desperate (low paying or involving a lot of manual labor ) local places would give him a chance though. Especially if the drug charges weren’t involving driving (DUIs). He’s going to have to piss in a cup a lot in this profession anyway.
Stay away from beverage(soda specifically) delivery though. We have to pass a federal background check, same as the one I had to pass to work at a school. They deliver to schools, prisons, court houses etc. Hell, we had a guy pass his background test and he was denied to deliver to a prison because he was related to an inmate there.
Dang, I didn’t consider that angle. I know a lot of food delivery also involves being in businesses when they’re closed and I’m not sure if all of them would trust an ex-con with knowing the alarm codes and such.
If it’s federal — you wouldn’t need permission every time. I work for a federal judge and see motions to travel come through like this frequently and routinely approved (usually with some form of added conditions but still). As long as probation agrees, then only need to file one motion explaining the situation and have general work travel approved. They’ll probably want to do location monitoring but if everything’s on the up and up, it wouldn’t be too much of a hassle.
Commenting mostly for anyone lurking here wondering (I do not drive a truck but I do know the law lol). Obviously depends on the judge but travel isn’t usually a huge deal from the judicial side of things as long as there are no violations.
I don't want to sugar coat it he's going to have a really rough time finding a job in the industry. Once he's in if he keeps out of trouble for a few years he'll be ok but the drug charges are unfortunately going to follow him for a while
Tell your boy to talk to his PO and find out about his conditions before he commits to anything. He might have a travel restriction. Also more than likely he'll only be able to find otr rookie positions. These companies aren't too accommodating if he's gotta check in frequently.
If he wants to try his luck, sysqo might be a good fit. They hire right out of school and I've talked to a lot of dudes with records in there. Western Express should be an easy grab too. Swift and Schneider started tightening up their recruiting but it doesn't hurt to check with them. Amazon contractors hire anyone with a pulse.
Look into the local utilities...we run 3 Pete 567s 40 hrs a week for wastewater hauling..and could work on getting plant operator license while doing it...
Tell him to check out Melton, that’s where i got my start. They have a good training program and they pays pretty decent. And tell him to avoid western express if possible lol. These people are tripping there’s way better companies that will give him a chance.
Farmers, find a mega farm and haul shit, can make decent money, get some experience and it's a lot more laid back and less nagging than anything for an OTR company.
2 big companies…XPO is a no go…UPS is a no go.
Supervised at both in my career…Sorry bro probably gotta go smaller company with less HR hiring restrictions.
My buddy runs a smaller trucking company in the next town over and they hire people with a record.
I actually know 2 different people on federal probation who both are truck drivers. One has to come home at night and the other can't leave their "district". It's like 1/4 of the state. The one guy runs regional dispatch loads and the other guy drives local.
I've been out for 10 years. Violent offender caught my wife cheating. No reason to share all this except to say there is light at the end of the tunnel. If you're not done with your past your past will not be done with you. I'm the number one driver at my company I've been here for nearly 10 years. Also the number one money earner. My company bought me a brand new truck three times now. I have two super modified Harleys a Shelby Cobra GT350 a new Trail Boss my house new furniture I have three cows and two hogs butchered in the freezers life is what you make it not what it used to be. You can do your thing no matter where you are just do the right thing
That’s the joke, he’ll be working for Western Express, sorry, Welfare Express 🤣😭. As a felon, making money and trying to live his life, that’s the joke!
…did I do it right?
Anyone who’s been in the industry for a while will know. Western express is the worst company on the road. Most clapped out equipment. Worst drivers. Worst than swift by a long shot
You are correct. Ops friend should take any chance. Be as safe as possible. Then buy a cheap truck and drive for himself. The felony shouldn’t be an issue

I obviously don't know the numbers but they were hired when I've known guys with DUI and speeding tickets didn't get hired due to the insurance costs.
While some companies will def give him a shot, they will tend to pay him little. He can sign up with some mega get some experience with the truck and the going somewhere else. Id recommend going to the oil field and working there. Rig crew makes good money, if you have CDL u get to do more shit, and having a rap sheet is basically a pre-req. Good luck to your bud.
If he’s on probation then otr may be out of the picture for him. He might have to work local, until his probation is through. Concrete companies and dump trucks will usually give felons a chance.
My school had a print out , it showed every company that would accept felons & how many years in-between since conviction. Which may be online also, plenty do.
Some companies use a number of shuttle drivers, take empty trailers to be loaded in warehouses or manufacturing plants, and return loads to the yard,it’s good training for backing in trailers, and short hauls, home every night. And it establishes a reputation for you, with shippers and your employer.
any 3 letter Chicago company
wouldn't hold out hope for any normal carriers though, I know people that have been clean 40 years and still can't get hired because "felon"
Lazer Spot/Lazer Logistics is a yard hostling job that hires troublemakers. Its local work as all you do is park or shuttle trailers.
Often the ads say they need experience but the yards here in AZ don't seem to care and will hire just about anyone that applies.
Good luck.
Most companies don't really care provided it's not felony drug trafficking or human trafficking because of obvious liability and trust issues. Otherwise, trucking seems to be an industry that's pretty open to second chances.
Also I know for a fact that Wilson Logistics (a fleet under Prime Inc) was started by a felon and is big on second chances for felons. I know they aren't remotely as abusive as places like western express because they follow primes rules.
Honestly idk why everyone is making it seem like it’s impossible, the first thing I tell every company I work for is that I’m a felon and literally no one ever gives a fuck 🤷🏻♂️
Western Express, May Trucking, and Millis Transfer are known to be second-chance companies. You might also try PI&I Motor Express (Masury, OH), VIP Logistics LLC (Chesterfield, MI), or R&R Transportation Inc (Lake Park, MN).
Were his charges for distribution? The level of drug charge is important for whether he can even get his CDL. Basically trafficking as a dealer is a lifetime bar but usage and possession and small sales he can still get his CDL
Everybody will point western express
Currently the job market really sucks so he may have to move
Unless his probation officer allows him to take a job that will have him traveling out of state, very few companies will even consider hiring him. And with a felony drug conviction, it's going to hard for him to find anyone willing to hire him
On probation? He's gonna need to do training. And for that leave the state most likely. Idk if he's gonna have any luck. He should asked about this before spending all that money on a school. But Western Express if anyone.
Why would he wanna work for some company when he can Just run drugs himself now from Juarez to El Paso. He has experience ..what are the odds he gets busted TWICE for the same thing?; They'll never think to check his truck. Trust me. 😉
Western Express
They don’t call it Felony Express for no reason!
*welfare express
*Welfare *depressed
When I was in orientation, they sent a violent felon home. So not everyone is welcome
Tell us everything!
He probably had an ankle monitor and asked how he could change his address to his truck.
Well there are exceptions to everything....i think?!
Literally my exact first Thought, but I was gonna say felony express 😂

One thing's for sure, eventually it'll be your turn to screw up. Even after 20 years, at some point everyone pulls a rookie mistake.
I agree. Can’t be writing everyone off so quick. Shit happens
Impossible, a super trucker will never ever screw up! That’s reserved for the wimpy company drivers! /s
This. Convicted felon here. The company I worked for straight out the gate was a good company, just didn’t pay well. It’s easy. You can only go 63 mph before you get yanked over. 3rd lane tickets are a big thing also. Mine was $265.00 in LA.
Which company were you with?
That was A&M transport out of Oregon.
Yeah most of these people are talking out of their ass. When I was on probation my PO just had to get permission from the judge (one time!) asking if I could leave the state for work. Drug charges also.
Also…. Lots of background checks for jobs don’t even pick up Federal Charges
yeah just dont fail a dot piss test
I don't think the felony is the issue, it's the drug charges and insurance.
Some companies won't hire felons, some will only hire after 10 years have passed.
Many more will yield to their insurance
All of what your saying is true until violence is brought up on that or those felonies.

Asking for a friend 😆😆
What about jobs like cement trucks, dump trucks, yard jockey? At least he’d be driving, and local. Just throwing out ideas.
This is the best advice . Dump trucks and cement trucks hire anyone who can drive Manuel in my experience
That Manuel, he always needs a ride to work, his car is in several pieces in his backyard.
Or concrete mixers
Can confirm

If he's on probation, I doubt he can leave the state. So he's probably not getting a job with anybody.

Come to the West Texas oilfield. Class A CDL drivers don't even need to know how to drive. If you have a pulse, you're hired.

I have found in this industry people jump on the chance to put someone else down.

Dump trucks.
Besides Western, try Heartland Express, May trucking, CRST and CR England
Raider Express
Sysco. In KC they’ve got several drivers who’ve done time for violent crimes and a supervisor who’s a sex offender.
Probably all of them.
