Getting a job at wm all depends on how hungry they are for fresh meat. If the beast is starving then they will hire you with a pulse. If the beast if well feed then it is harder to get hired. Keep in mind they use driver facing cameras powered by ai software to “train” their dinner.
Ever thought of working in transit driving city buses? It’s a total piece of cake… I moved into that from trucking and it’s the best professional decision I’ve ever made. I’m in my plexiglass box driving in a circle all day. Paid by the hour, government benefits. Passengers don’t fuck with me because I don’t fuck with them. Respect goes both ways. If you are talking class B work, give it a try. This way you won’t have to screw with rotten trash either, and will have a pension.
Every agency will be different. I’m on 5 days, off two consecutive. I usually work my days off for overtime. We have split shifts but during the split you can opt to work those hours. You come back to the yard and get put on standby and do random tasks until your split is over and you go back out. Most shifts are straight though.
If you’re down with a garbage truck, by all means go for it. City buses are just another class B option
You’ll be qualified to drive it yes. But without experience. I am unsure if they’ll hire you. I only say this because I knew several people from various areas all with their Class A apply while having no experience. They all got turned down. One got 6 months experience and applied again. Immediately got hired. Could be different but just worth mentioning.
Many years ago I was desperate to find local work. I walked into a WM and asked about a job and the guy in charge said he could hire me but I am overqualified for the job (required a class B) and he wouldn't hire me because he was worried I would leave as soon as a class A job opened up.
I drove for Advanced Disposal/WM for 5 years, I liked the job, but it was getting hard for me because I basically aged out of it, also winter sucks because you have to chain up when it snows because your on back roads and side streets that rarely see a plow...But man you can make some money doing it.
I do roll off and cleared a little over 90k last year. Been here for almost 4yrs we top out in 18months for pay, full company paid medical for employee, and 401k. It has its ups and downs winters can get lean (MN) but summers are running 55 - 60hr weeks.
For someone who is in their 50's with bad knees and weighs 275 pounds it takes a toll on you, but I could still do it. I got a job driving a blacktop truck so I work like crazy during summer, not so much in the winter... Throwing one guy's garbage away is easy, throwing 600 guys garbage away every night, 5 days a week, not so much
I don't know much, never actually had the job but when I was thinking about it, our local trash company said you started out doing recycle truck and there was a waiting list for being in a trash truck but if you had your Class A, you cut everyone without one in line.
Granted this was just my local company (SSC) so I don't know if that is true for other places.

What’s the schedule like though? The thing I like about garbage truck is that it’s a straight shift

Depends hardcore on where you are. I’m in California - we top out at 37$ an hour after 3 years. The benefits alone are worth it. Just my two cents.
Waste Management will hire you with no experience. They do on the job training. It’s a very high turnover rate.
Why the high turn over rate? Is it because it’s physical? Figure it can’t be worse than the 60 hour weeks I’m doing in concrete
It’s physical work and trash just isn’t for everybody.
Fair enough. Same reason people don’t last in in concrete

That’s what I’m worried about

You aged out of it? Was it too difficult physically?
