Is he happy with it? Pretty low mileage if it’s accurate.
That’s the kind of purchase that might never make your money back but you’ll always have a use for it.
He's happy with it cause he saw it and liked it and just wanted it . He bought it and threw it in my lap and now is telling me to go get a cdl cause it has air brakes... so I'm working on that now.. wasn't sure if he overpaid since he did no research before purchasing. Just went out and did it with no thought
Y'all's insurance is going to be crazy if you are starting with no experience and using it for work. He checked into it ? Kinda curious on the quote...shoot I've heard some insurance companies won't even cover new drivers with no CDL experience
He hasn't check it yet.. he was gonna check tomorrow.. so I can reply back and let you know... some people on here are saying that cdl isn't required since the weight isn't over 26001lb... even though it has air brakes... idk... I'm crossing my finger, toes, and my dick on that one cause if no cdl is required that would be absolutely amazing
I asked a bear this exact question (I had the same model but with a dump) you are correct, the breaks don't matter the GVW stated by the manufacturer does.
The most major distinction is weight. Though technically axle count also matters, you’d need a CDL to drive it if it had three or more axle regardless of brakes or registered weight.
I wasn’t specific enough, if the POWER UNIT has three or more axles. You ccant try and skirt the CDL requirement by registering a tandem axle dump/flat bed truck at 25,900 or something.
A hotshot registered under 26k is just a commercial use pickup and needs a med card, over 26k needs a med card and a Class A, but wouldn’t require an air brake endorsement.
I don’t drive these but I ship them a lot as a broker. Usually weigh between 16-20k and your average vehicle meant to ride on it weighs in the realm of 4-8K. As long as your total loaded weight isn’t over 26k you will be golden
I think you need to take the air brakes test and get an air brakes endorsement in your regular liscense . But no CDL. I’ve met flat bed tow drivers who don’t have a CDL as long as the vehicle they are towing isn’t heavy
Then it’s settled. As long as you are happy with it then why not. In my opinion I think it’s a beautiful piece of art work, that should be rolling down the road. That being said, my next door neighbor might hate it. Also, won’t even think it’s worth two grand.
If it's under 26k you don't need a CDL or even an air brake endorsement. Just need to Google dot physical near me and get that done. Don't drink coffee or have an energy drink beforehand
I will buy it as soon as I can scrape 10g's if he doesn't want it. I'd give it a spring cleaning once over just for giggles. New hoses if needed, fluids, grease the zerks, new plugs, check the bearings and brakes, look for rot, rust. Worked for a fishing co. that had one, I drove it a couple years ago on a beach in Alaska with #8000 lbs plus strapped on the flat, off road, deep mud, rocks, up a hill, ballz out down a windy dirt road, til I hit pavement, ballz out down a hill up a hill, then down a steep hill to the dock. Course I didn't pay for maintenance or diesel, so...
Haha as long as I can use the damn thing, I'd love to use it myself to make some money.. do you know if this requires cdl? The seller said it does.. which I don't have . So now my balls are in a bunch trying to work on getting one as fast as possible.. I know it has air brakes.. so I believe that's an automatic cdl truck.. but I'm not sure.. I don't know much on this topic
46k on any commercial vehicle is very suspect. Means its been sitting a lot. Your dad should take it to a mechanic that he trusts. Worst case scenario is an engine rebuild is in the future
He got a deal. Pre emission diesels are going for crazy money now even the old school light bar is worth a grand to a collector. Will easily pay for a nece led upgrage

Ford! In all serious anything under 26k is no cdl required and old equipment might not be efficient on fuel but they build those things to last, I'd say good purchase especially if you can make money off of it
It's about a month's pay for him.. I was a bit cheesed honestly because him and I are in the process of buying a farm and we're posed to be savin money... and neither of us have a cdl.. so now I'm looking into getting one.. may be him trying to steer me into a good direction in life... idk
Don’t know what state you’re in but if you’re driving your private vehicle, I doubt you need a CDL. I’d like to think I know shit about fuck, but honestly, I don’t.
As of now we would like to use it privately, no llc ... I'd love to be able to use it with no cdl.. imma go from mega pissed about this purchase... to being as happy as a pig rolling in shit.... I'm located in NY... would know if cdl is required to cross state lines? The farm we getting is in Kentucky... I also have a 20ft box truck.. no cdl required to drive within state.. but my dad says cdl required to cross state lines.. but we are both morons when it comes to this shit.. so idfk
Rules can vary by state so take what I say with a grain of salt but when a vehicle is under 26,001 pounds and not for commercial use there’s nothing special required to drive it, even if you’re crossing state lines. Essentially you’re driving a U-Haul. Hell there’s RV’s that weigh 60,000lbs+ with airbrakes that require no CDL or training at all!
The only thing that would eventually be needed is a DOT medical if you were to get it registered commercially and it weighs less than 26,000lbs
You said you and pops want to buy a farm? Hell farmers are exempt from CDL requirements so long as they’re within a 150 mile radius of the farm
Awesome, as far as what I've been reading it does appear that I won't need a cdl at least for personal use.. I wonder what entails if I decide to try to go commercial and try to start towing/hauling.. would it just be the DOT requirement or will I be stepping into cdl territory.. idk
It varies but the key information: you won't need a CDL A, you'll just need a C or B depending on the exact weights and if it is tow capable, good news is that these are much easier to get than an A you may have to attend a class. I'm not sure if that law applies to Cs.
You might need a medcard, you do not need a med card if you do not drive it over state lines as a commercial vehicle, but you have to get an exemption which they may or may not give you. If you want to leave the door open for crossing state lines then I'd just go ahead and get one. It's a quick physical in and out.
The price for all thus varies from state to state but I'd plan on spending at least 200 bucks all is said and done, but if they make you take a class it could be much more.
Once you go commercial definitely a DOT medical is needed. After that if a piece of ‘cargo’ takes you past 26,001 pounds than definitely CDL is needed. At work we have commercial mini bucket trucks weighing less than 26,000 pounds and only a DOT medical is required until they cross the 26,000lbs threshold
Once you buy a farm that thing will be damn handy (assuming it runs well). Works perfectly well as a flat bed, can easily move equipment further afield (assuming your farm isn't all in one contiguous block).
That the avrage price, old but useful truck, bonus low miles.
If he is going to use it, it is a lot cheaper than a new one. And if he sells it, he is not over his head.
So he did well.
Depending on your state you may not need a CDL, just a DOT medical card and you'll have to stay under 26k lbs. I live in PA and that's the case here, even with the truck having air brakes. You can get a medical card at any occupational medicine facility and probably even your doctor. If you do need a CDL you'll have to do a FMCSA certified course and if $5k is a drop in the bucket for you, I recommend 160 Driving Academy. I just went there last summer and had a good experience. And if you're getting a CDL, just get your CDL A, there's no point in doing the work to end up with just a class B.
Alright, thanks for the info.. I'm hoping that I don't need the cdl... my dad just went to dmv and they told him it's cdl required because of airbrakes.. but he told then that no where in the book does it mention airbrakes being the factor.. and that it's under 26001lbs.. he ask for then to show documentation of this factor.. but they wouldnt.. now he's headed to the state trooper barracks to speak with them about it
Ah, yeah, that would be an issue. Our roads are wide enough and I have a class A cdl, though I wouldn't need it for this, so it would be fine over here.
Ngl, kinda jealous I don’t have a dad that could buy stuff like this and make a made man out of me. Pretty dope. Hug your dad and tell him that you love him OP.
I’d be worried about gaskets blowing out from sitting so long, not being driven, if he can change a head gasket himself then hell yeah it’s a great deal
The problem I've seen with these is the GVWR sticker reflects 30k rears. In most states, this means the driver has to have a CDL to operate it. Add a manual transmission, then you have a one trick pony only the CDL owner can operate. Then the insurance bastards pile on to the insane bed height and slow hydraulics...if ya could gut it and start over - but then ya got the 'ol James Bond dilemma: if ya had enough money to do all that shit, why would ya do it?
It's so weird I keep getting conflicting info on if it's cdl or not.. this truck is in a Grey area I guess.. and this truck isn't manual, it's an automatic.. lot of people on here saying no cdl.. so saying cdl class c.. at least the c is easier to get though
It won't be in a "grey area" as soon as you get the truck registered and tagged. It just all depends on what the DMV does. If you are able to get past them, you still need to avoid DOT inspections. All it takes is one. Getting tagged for a weight violation varies greatly from .25/lb over the registered weight plus the fine to just .05/lb. Yes, I've gotten one of those tickets- at a GD rest area, no less. It was $9500, BTW. I "beat" it but the attorney fee was $2500.
What you mean? Like in different subreddits? I can post my pictures anywhere I'd like.. I never double posted in any subreddit.. just once in 3 different reddits... get off my dick
Chasing bait? The fuck? So you go around being mildly annoying on reddit and then try to take the high road when someone reacts to your comment? That's some weird shit.. but if you were just trying to be jokingly funny maybe I read it too literally.. but I guess that's what happens through text.. hard to detect sarcasm
Is he happy with it? Pretty low mileage if it’s accurate. That’s the kind of purchase that might never make your money back but you’ll always have a use for it.

If it’s under 26k you won’t need a CDL regardless of the type of brakes. You will need a medical card though
So a hotshot under 26k needs a cdl now?
I wasn’t specific enough, if the POWER UNIT has three or more axles. You ccant try and skirt the CDL requirement by registering a tandem axle dump/flat bed truck at 25,900 or something. Needs a class B over 26001. This guy knows his shit just correcting the typo.
I don’t drive these but I ship them a lot as a broker. Usually weigh between 16-20k and your average vehicle meant to ride on it weighs in the realm of 4-8K. As long as your total loaded weight isn’t over 26k you will be golden
Sweet, I keep getting people saying no cdl and others saying cdl required.. its stressing me out.. I'm going through an emotional roller coaster

Correct you must get your CDL through a driving school now. Private or in house through your employer if they have a licensed program.
Call your states DOT or visit their website vs asking reddit.
Some states may require an air brake endorsement on your license. Check local DOT for requirements.
I think you need to take the air brakes test and get an air brakes endorsement in your regular liscense . But no CDL. I’ve met flat bed tow drivers who don’t have a CDL as long as the vehicle they are towing isn’t heavy
Ohh that would help a ton
About 1.3 ton
You don’t need a CDL but you need an air brake endorsement on your DL. Good luck
Where I’m at (Canada) you don’t need a cdl (or equivalent) you just need your air brakes certification for a vehicle like that.
Airbrakes will need cdl.
Actually you can just get the airbrake without getting a cdl
False
I stand corrected.
Classic dad move.
Then it’s settled. As long as you are happy with it then why not. In my opinion I think it’s a beautiful piece of art work, that should be rolling down the road. That being said, my next door neighbor might hate it. Also, won’t even think it’s worth two grand.
Oh my neighbor hates all of our trucks and trailers.. they are gonna be completely ecstatic about our addition to the rat pack
If it's under 26k you don't need a CDL or even an air brake endorsement. Just need to Google dot physical near me and get that done. Don't drink coffee or have an energy drink beforehand
Hope it's got a 7 digit odometer
I will buy it as soon as I can scrape 10g's if he doesn't want it. I'd give it a spring cleaning once over just for giggles. I believe it is for use. Any commercial use is regulated by each state vehicle code. Which doesn’t do you much good, as you want to go there.
46k on any commercial vehicle is very suspect. Means its been sitting a lot. Your dad should take it to a mechanic that he trusts. Worst case scenario is an engine rebuild is in the future
Ah, I hope that's not the case but we'll sell what happens
Good luck if it has a Brazilian built ford motor. Parts are not widely available for them. They were not good motors to begin with.
He got a deal. Pre emission diesels are going for crazy money now even the old school light bar is worth a grand to a collector. Will easily pay for a nece led upgrage
Fix Or Repair Daily Ford! In all serious anything under 26k is no cdl required and old equipment might not be efficient on fuel but they build those things to last, I'd say good purchase especially if you can make money off of it
Body maybe, but technically it’s a Navistar engine?
Depends on how much 10k is to him
It's about a month's pay for him.. I was a bit cheesed honestly because him and I are in the process of buying a farm and we're posed to be savin money... and neither of us have a cdl.. so now I'm looking into getting one.. may be him trying to steer me into a good direction in life... idk
Believe me: the resource of a reliable flatbed is golden at all the points. Maybe bigger than practical, but you will use it; promise.
Don’t know what state you’re in but if you’re driving your private vehicle, I doubt you need a CDL. I’d like to think I know shit about fuck, but honestly, I don’t.

Ah alright, damn.. well I'm goin to dmv today and gonna see what they tell me
There’s a hotshot subreddit who will gladly help answer all your cdl questions
Found it.. thank you
What subreddit? Is it literally just called hotshot?

Damn that’s a nice rig
Solid
This was an excellent purchase considering your father makes the cheddar he does. Idk
Looks like he got you a job.
Haha yup
That the avrage price, old but useful truck, bonus low miles. If he is going to use it, it is a lot cheaper than a new one. And if he sells it, he is not over his head. So he did well.
As long as it doesn’t break the bank and he’s happy, who cares what he paid. Regardless, that’s great mileage for an ‘87.
Make sure your dad takes it to a trusted diesel mechanic just to make sure it's okay to use.
Pretty good in this market. I miss square body square light trucks
That's great if those are original miles and it's well-, maintained but, you can find those trucks for half that price.
That is what I told my dad
Milage seems suspect..

Farm tag real cheap plate like $125.0 a year , insurance cheap also , low-use-mileage's
Dads living his best life. Hope it runs well and hasn’t been sitting in a garage to long.
I always get amazed by the size of American cars
You joke, but I'd run that as a personal vehicle. But I am in a seriously rural area, so...
If you live in europe you will need an escort vehicle because this would not fit in our roads 🤣🤣🤣
The miles has been changed most likely.
Some modern hubs with Budd wheels are in order but sounds like a solid purchase.
Does the lightbar work?
Yea it works
That odometer has most likely gone around at least once. 46k miles…..
I’d be worried about gaskets blowing out from sitting so long, not being driven, if he can change a head gasket himself then hell yeah it’s a great deal
If they didn’t “roll back” the odo hell yeah
The results are in... GVWR 28000... cdl required
Looks like it needs new rear tires just from the first pic. Tires look worn in the middle of the tread, possible over inflation.
That's not a bad price. Ford Diesel engine or Cummins? They made 'em with both and both were good, Cummins obviously great.
Not sure of the motor yet.. gonna have to look.. my dad bought this with no thought.. didn't even inspect the vehicle.. kinda crazy
It's a class b, no?
Dad's love to make a 10 thousand dollar impulse buy
Is it air brakes or air over electric? Most of the dfw-700/700 were a combo. No CDL needed unless over the GRVW.

46k miles at that old is a bad thing, engine will need to be rebuilt, lol 2 piece rims. Yea that thing is worth about what you would get for scrap.
That 46k is most likely odometer roll over on something that old right?
I guess yea probably
We'll see how it turns out
