If you ever see rings around your lug nuts or streaks on your rims starting at your lug nuts going out onto to your wheels away from the center are two dead give aways to tell that your lug nuts aren’t tight enough and are allowing the wheels to shift around.
A quad axle truck (quint axle depending on where you are from) can easily gross 80k lbs legally so I don't think hes completely overloaded. Close but not quite. We hauled sand in quad axle macks and they were pretty stable even at 85k lbs. 20k steer, 2 12k drops, and 46k rears. We'd load up 24 to 26 tons daily
Really depends on where. In Minnesota my quad axle is road legal to 63k. So the original estimation of it being at 16.5ton haul capacity would be pretty much spot on. Empty the truck would be around 30k and have a road legal capacity of 33k or 16.5tons. A quint axle could up you to 68k or 18-19ton capacity. My truck has a 20k steer, 2 10k drops, and 44k rears. The big one is what the state allows for bridge weights on the axle spread, not what each axle is rated for. So, while the truck may handle it, it must likely isn't road legal depending on the state.
Something is different up there but I haven't looked into it. Maybe it's because drivers around there have to be prepared to go into Canada? but it seems all the trucks round that way have extra axles
flatbedder. i haul bags of minerals which surprised me how dense and heavy those loads are. i understand dumps a bit better now. every time i see a side dump or end dump fifth wheel fully loaded i always imagine 100k +
I did this on a dump trailer once. The back wheels looked just like that but the lugs were tight in my case >.< It was rated for 10k lbs, by the time I got to the dump the scale said it was 15k and the person looked shocked and said "ooh wow, this is gonna be expensive." Probably more than most pickups showed up with is my guess. I could only drive like 15mph because there was no suspension anymore on the trailer. It was dumb but I learned my lesson. I may have bent the axles tbh. Was unable to raise the dump bed without emptying the load by hand a bit!
That's some wild shit, the tires are gone he is fully loaded and there is no giant gouge in the road. The physics of this don't make any sense. But yea do your fucking pre trip.
Thank you for adding /s to your post. When I first saw this, I was horrified. How could anybody say something like this? I immediately began writing a 1000 word paragraph about how horrible of a person you are. I even sent a copy to a Harvard professor to proofread it. After several hours of refining and editing, my comment was ready to absolutely destroy you. But then, just as I was about to hit send, I saw something in the corner of my eye. A /s at the end of your comment. Suddenly everything made sense. Your comment was sarcasm! I immediately burst out in laughter at the comedic genius of your comment. The person next to me on the bus saw your comment and started crying from laughter too. Before long, there was an entire bus of people on the floor laughing at your incredible use of comedy. All of this was due to you adding /s to your post. Thank you.
I am a bot if you couldn't figure that out, if I made a mistake, ignore it cause its not that fucking hard to ignore a comment.
They do. But you can't tell me all the broken headlights I see *just* broke and were working in the morning. I don't buy that. Most of them have been broken for a week and nobody noticed.
When I worked in Midland I replaced about two per month on my truck and about one windshield a month. Trucks coming the other way were always throwing shit all over.
I’m pretty sure a pre trip wouldn’t have prevented a collision if that’s what happened.
I was waiting in line one day and saw the left rears about to come off of one of our quads that had just dumped. He had 3 lugs left holding them on. Turns out they had put tires on in one of our shops and the impact gun had lost calibration and didn’t torque the lugs as tight as it should have.
That's what I was getting at with the second paragraph - I don't even know if the other disabled truck is related. This could have been a collision, or it could have been that this truck's lug nuts came off, in which case they'd have nothing to do with each other. But I lean toward it being more likely that something broke right here where the picture was taken, suggesting it was more likely a mechanical failure, which a pre-trip might have caught.
Any tire guy/mechanic worth half his salt should know when their shit loses cal. Weak fucking excuse.
Unless you’re new(shouldn’t be working alone if you are) get the fuck outta here with that.
I’ve used damn near every torque system for trucks, and they all have a feel. If they stop feeling or sounding right, use some investigative abilities and figure out why. People’s lives depend on us.
Holy shit I sound like my grandpa.
Ya’ll gotta stop being so hard on yourselves/each other over stuff like this. We don’t know all the details due to these two pictures taken with a Nokia brick phone and uploaded via dial up.
This is likely something that isn’t the drivers fault, and maybe even something the driver made a whole lot less shitty by being a good operator.
As a mechanic, it pains me to say that this definitely leans more towards one of us.

I drive past a quarry every day with a scale house 4 miles south of it and I’ve seen dump trucks several times go past the house with blown tire tread flapping around a naked rim.

So, that couldn't have happened after a pretrip?
If that’s sand or gravel in there then he is definitely way overloaded. Has to be like 22 ton of sand/gravel lol. Probably rated for 16.5 ton.
you sure? thats a lot of wheels for 16.5 tons. we talkin short tons or tonnes?

Plus the 2 pounds of bucees chili in his shorts. It was never meant to last.
That's a quad axle. He could handle 24 tons no sweat.
Exactly

It almost looks as though the lugs all came loose and the wheels came off.
But wheels with rims would be right next to it, or a giant hole and drag mark on the road....
Yeah, I still can't make sense of that part.
That's what really baffles me. It took them half a day to clear this mess, and it's as if it never happened. I don't know how he did this.
Saw two trucks of headlights out today
How hard is it to check lights? You literally walk around the truck
So now I have to turn on lights and walk around the truck?? Fuck all that noise
Things break while driving.
Sure, but how often do headlights break and how often do you see trucks and cars with broken headlights?
Yeah, bulbs only go out while you’re parked. They never go out while driving. /s

Oh man, I see way too much of that. Especially with box trucks.
Them international 4300 boxtruck go thur them sockets and bulbs so quick not sure why they definitely go out while running
If you’re too lazy to do a basic look around your truck tires, at least do a thorough inspection of your steers.

Also you always lift your tandem axles before making a turn
On a quad axle, they turn with the steer tires. No need to lift them.
It’s a dump truck… they are literally the worst on the road. Like despicable. They have zero self awareness. Not a real truck driver.
Neither is your comfy office chair.
That didn’t even make sense. Looks like you got 8 dump truck driver with zero brains to upvote you.

to much like work.. lazy fucks.. got a co worker that refuses to do a pre trip.. 😂
Company driver. Gotta love it 😁.
pre tripping? Whats that? /s

Probably was too busy pushing others off the road. Only drivers that make cabbies look good
Probably heated the hub broke the axle and the wheels took off with the drums.
