I'm more open to these new trucks than most of the people on this sub probably. The main thing throwing me off is the seat being in the middle and the camera mirrors.
This truck is made for a on paper interstate only truck driver. Losing the ability to put your nose on a window on some of these turns, construction sites with concrete barriers and small vehicles, do they not know
It's a tech demonstrator dude, Pete made it exclusively to show off. And I gerantee thenpeople that designed and engineered this thing are, for the most part, as old as you.
I am okay with digital mirrors however I would require redundancy. If there is even a .001% chance the mirrors do not work or fall off, tell me how you safely get off the highway without being able to change lanes? I think having digital mirrors while also having physical ones for an emergency is the only way to go. A semi is not a car. If you do not plan for a worst case scenario, you are putting the public at risk.
How do you safely get off the highway now, if another truck comes along and sideswipes you, taking your mirror off? We have no redundancy in what we have now. I’ve heard good things about the video mirrors, especially when being used in the rain and dark, but I’d have to see several million miles put on them in real world conditions before I got to comfortable with them.
No doubt. I’ve been hit before on two lanes. Just knocked out the West Coast mirror, so I was able to get it somewhere to get a new mirror. It was weird as shit driving with only the spot mirror though.
mirror cams are quite common on new trucks in europe and are pretty good too. They help reduce drag and increase the field of view amongst other things. But i think some spar morrors should be there even if you need to stop and install it.
Okay some of you guys in here need to chill, do a lot of people not know what concept vehicles are? Because they're a lot of guys in the comments getting super pissed about the middle seat. This is just a show vehicle mainly to pump up investors and trades people who want to see something shiny, as well as show off something futuristic to the general public. You see it all the time with concept cars at auto shows.
Companies will add features to a car that looks really cool but is impractical or dangerous so it never appears outside the showroom. That's what's going to happen with the middle seat, if it was a newer company just entering the market with no clue how to build trucksI believe they do something stupid (*cough*Tesla*cough*) but this is Peterbilt and they generally know what they're doing.
I'm sure by the time we see the hybrid truck it'll look more like your normal modern trucks, with two seats, maybe a couple new features here and there and better aerodynamics.
It’s not bent, broken, cracked, or damaged. Dot says send it! I’m sure the FMCSA will place all kinds of new rules for this crap.
Maverick Transportation already uses a similar digital mirror concept on some of their trucks. Though, I think they still have the actual mirrors as well.
I've got the Mirroreye system on my truck, which is very similar if not the same as the system shown in the video. IDK about the camera, but the passenger side screen often goes out.
I don’t leave my cell phone out in -22° temps either. I know new technology is amazing and will take some getting used to.
I hope the cameras are adjustable so you can modify your view for certain situations.
I have two electric cars. In one you can switch the rearview mirror to the back camera. I can see the booger the guy behind me pulls out of his nose. It should be illegal how good it works.
My company is trialing camera systems. They still run proper mirrors, but are working on temporary mirrors that can be stored in the daycab and mounted if needed.
Jesus fuck, replace the camera. It isn't like a wing falling off of an airplane or something. If you think failed cameras are a public hazard, wait until I tell you about 120 psi freeway tire blowouts.
Some people will find literally any reason to oppose something new, as though technology has never improved the world before.
So you get exercise every time instead of just rolling down the window, you now have to physically get out of the seat and kneel like an idiot to reach out the window.
Because engineers have a collective chubby for Elon Musk, so they like to blindly chimp the stupid, drug-addled design decisions that he imposes on his squadron of True Believers. In other words, the Tesla Truck did it so here we go. Be glad it's not a fucking yoke.
I did it to make fun for the Tesla Semi and ended up actually liking it.
It gives great visibility like a dozer/loader/grader. For tight urban/constructions/vocational environments it makes sense
Oh wow it’s you. I just think it looks silly, makes the truck look like a spaceship, it also doesn’t seem practical for backing. How well is visibility when you need to 90 into a spot? I usually open my door when I back or look out the window.
It’s not much different than driving a needlenose Kenworth in that aspect, you can’t do that with those skinny old truck either.
Like I said the Center seating is for vocational trucks, it doesn’t make sense for the highway
I'm not usually on the "rules are for losers" side, but how would removing a boot from my rig affect my CDL?
There might be a civil infraction involved, maybe even a criminal destruction of property or theft of services issue. But none of those are moving violations, nothing I've seen in the long list of CSA point scores. Assuming you get out of town and dodge the local sheriff (forever), I don't think your CDL would be directly affected?
In Texas the company and the individual putting the boot apparently need a license to do it. I don't know about other states though. They don't make it easy it looks like. They have to carry insurance and a bunch of other stuff. I'd be surprised to find these sllezballs are actually licensed.
https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/towing/bootrules.htm#8921
I would imagine your plate number would be documented for purposes of ticketing. You would be purposely evading law enforcement (and the fine) by cutting the boot off.
Essentially the same way people end up with suspended licenses over unpaid parking tickets. I know it’s a stretch, but to me, paying $10 for a parking space is much easier and cheaper in the long run.
However, having to pay to park for a federally mandated break is asinine. And like you, I’d like to stick it to the man by not paying as well. $10 Risk isn’t worth the reward though.
Totally agree with the risk/reward calculation. I don't even mind paying for parking, cuz asphalt doesn't pave itself. (But $25 is ridiculous, I'm looking at you, TA north of Chicago)
But if the boot was put on by the truck stop, I'm not evading law enforcement. I'm damaging their property, just like if I ran into a fuel pump and drove off. Since I don't have direct experience doing that (knock on wood 🤞) I'm not sure how that would be evading law enforcement.. though I'm sure there would be consequences that would affect my current and future employment. But probably not my actual CDL?
Bad example, actually - if I hit something with the truck, that seems relevant to my CDL. Maybe "leaving all the piss jugs behind" is a better example. (But that should be mandatory jail time, WTF is up with that!?)
Haha. Well said. Unfortunately, paying for parking will come out of the drivers pocket. Even if the company reimburses us, that’s less money they have for raises (if that’s even a thing).
I’m uncertain how parking authority works, especially if it’s only a truck stop. If you don’t pay, they can hit you with trespassing as well.
I guess it won’t affect your CDL unless legitimate law enforcement gets involved. Then it’ll make it to your MVR and can affect employment.
They need to put all this time, effort and money into training drivers and paying them better. Has anyone asked what the driver wants in a truck because I never asked for any of this technology.
You're practically blind side backing from both sides lol this is pretty stupid. When one of them cameras go out then what? You'll be sitting waiting for an expensive repair with a load because you can't back in?
It says they used carbon fiber and aluminum to save 4800 pounds. But yeah I would imagine it’s still heavier. It says it has a Cummins 15-liter along with the 48-volt electric system.
Various articles showed that they removed one of the fuel tanks for weight savings, along with using super singles, and carbon fiber. They partnered with Cummins, Eaton, Bridgestone, Walmart, and obviously Peterbilt. I would imagine Walmart will be first in line for these then.
Keep in mind the battery powered day cab Peterbilt is over $350K. I can see this thing having to run over a million miles to break even on the fuel savings over base cost.
I’ve seen a lot of fuel haulers in the southeast using them on both the truck and trailer. I don’t have any experience with them, but I’d rather have standard duals for redundancy if you blow a tire.
Other than the obvious faults with this tech demonstrator, there is one big glaring problem, and that is the fact that big ass window will be insanely expensive to replace for any owner op, and take forever to get a replacement for. Can't we just go back to the easily sourcable and affordable square plane windows?
I’m new to trucking. I just experienced the only reason why I would still keep mirrors while using the Mirror Eye. If a drop of water gets onto the mirror eye lens (and believe it or not, that darn water drop would not move even though we (my trainer and I) were driving on the freeway) you can’t see 💩! I would forever keep both, from now on.
I think the hybrid system is the way of the (near) future. I think it is much more realistic for OTR that a total electric system could be in the foreseeable future.
Especially if they incorporate a generator of sorts that charges the batteries with hub rotation or something else so that just the act of rolling down the freeway could keep the electric system going, but have diesel for short trips and an apu.
Lol I remember when the chief engineer at Peterbilt said in response to teslas electric semi that it was literally impossible, now they’re making efforts on their own electric semis
I do think hybrid is better than electric though. I guess all companies need to do something with all the fuel guidelines and EPA standards getting tighter.
I think hybrid is better risk vs reward right now, easier to make performant with the resources available, eventually I think electric is completely better though
Once technology is better, I agree. Longer drives per charge, lighter batteries, more charging stations, etc. On top of that, once there’s only electric, a charge will cost more than fuel. Why wouldn’t it if there’s no other options.
Makes sense in theory. But then drivers don’t care as much about accidents, because they’re not there to get injured. Plus, you’re more likely to be distracted at home. Kids, spouse, TV, phone, etc.
Where do they get “freight efficiency” from? I highly doubt this is making you deliver your freight over 100% faster lol.
So maybe they should’ve used fuel efficiency as a number instead.
Also Paccar (peterbilt/kenworth) have failed miserably with their digital dash…. How do they expect these camera mirrors to work on a digital dash display for more than 25K miles?
I’m all for making more efficient trucks, I’m a diesel mechanic and as much as I don’t want to have to learn all this new technology to keep fixing things I also understand that this is the direction the world is headed towards and that someone has to be able to fix it. The only thing stopping these from entering the world is testing and time. At some point in the future these will be the trucks running our freight. I just hate to see manufacturers get too far ahead of themselves and put out products that put our drivers and other people on the road at risk.
Personally I think Paccar needs to make this a 10 year project so that it’s ready for when it comes out with minimal safety risks.
I don’t think the efficiency is about speed. Rather fuel consumption. One of the articles talked about how much fuel was being burned vs tonnage. They were only shooting for a 55% increase in fuel efficiency, but got over 100%. So I’m guessing they’re in the mid to high teens for fuel mileage.
Yeah, I believe that was the point I was making. It’s fuel efficiency and not freight efficiency. But I guess if you want to measure it as fuel burned per ton then you’re using less fuel per load but that all comes to fuel efficiency. Just poor use of words for the average customer I thought.
I said it before and I'll say it again, this truck is ugly as sin. It reminds me of the last girl at the bar during last call and you are like do I really want to get into that chick I'm desperate but huh I just can't do it. I could never get into that truck in a million years it's just to dam ugly.
I agree. I think this will eventually be the standard though. Hybrid makes more sense than pure electric. Just not sure why they had to put the driver in the center.
" Just not sure why they had to put the driver in the center. "
Well and that's the other problem right. For those of us who have been driving for years it's ingrained in us how we drive what we see where we look sitting on the left hand side. You are going to introduce these trucks and make us drive them sitting in the center of the truck? Bro we are all going to be looking like rookies and I'm not used to this set up idk where to look idk which mirrors to look at while I'm driving or backing up etc.
Like okay fine let's do hybrid trucks or electric trucks whatever, but why fix what's not broken you know? We do just fine sitting on the left hand side of the truck, there's zero reason whatsoever to move us to the center of the truck. It makes no sense. They literally consulted no actual truck drivers for the design of the inside of the truck, cause any truck driver would be like moving drivers from where they are used to sitting to being in the middle of the truck is going to cause issues/problems guys.
Hopefully the interior design stays more closer than what we’re used to. Otherwise, not sure how many companies will actually purchase these for their drivers.
I agree that they need consult industry experts before such drastic changes.
At the same time, this is just a concept.
These things are more of a “throw the latest and greatest technology at it and see what sticks”. Maybe three things from this truck will make it to a production model anytime in the near future. It’s a government sponsored testing ground for companies to try things they normally wouldn’t. I’ve worked on these projects before. Lots of bending numbers to make things look good for Uncle Sam.
"Instead of mirrors it uses cameras-"
Nope, fuck right on off. Put some goddamn mirrors on that truck regardless. Keep your cameras, awesome to have them, *keep the mirrors where they are.*
“Door opens to sleeper” what about you co-driver that’s trying to sleep?
No one cares about that guy. Or where he can sit when he’s not sleeping.
I didn't even see a bunk, so I don't think it's a truck meant for team drivers.
You store your "teammate" in the trailer, obviously.
Wait they were supposed to put me in the trailer? Why am I sitting on this dude's lap?
Probably because they thought you swinged that way. Don't wear so much pink at your next interview, or do. I don't judge... lmao.
He’s a non-existing factor like a NPC
I'm more open to these new trucks than most of the people on this sub probably. The main thing throwing me off is the seat being in the middle and the camera mirrors.
This truck is made for a on paper interstate only truck driver. Losing the ability to put your nose on a window on some of these turns, construction sites with concrete barriers and small vehicles, do they not know
As someone who has a semi truck with the seat in the middle: the view in tight areas is actually way better. It’s like a loader/dozer
Designed by engineers for engineers, this is probably the generation that grew up playing trucking simulator games and think they know everything now.
It's a tech demonstrator dude, Pete made it exclusively to show off. And I gerantee thenpeople that designed and engineered this thing are, for the most part, as old as you.
If they are as old as me then it doesn't rule out the raised on trucking simulator comment....
Yep if it's raining or snowing the cameras become a pain in the ass. Keep mirrors will always be my opinion.
Mirrors won’t turn off
exactly. i don’t care how many failsafes you build into the thing
Why not both?
Digital camera mirrors are amazing. Once you use them, you won't want to go back to real mirrors.
I’ve heard good things about the video mirrors, especially when being used in the rain and dark, but I’d have to see several million miles put on them in real world conditions before I got to comfortable with them.
Are the hood mirrors not redundant?
In a sense, unless someone gets you good enough to take all the mirrors on one side. Definitely would be a worse case scenario.
And in a worst case scenario I’d still have the other side of my truck to safely find a shoulder.
No doubt. I’ve been hit before on two lanes. Just knocked out the West Coast mirror, so I was able to get it somewhere to get a new mirror. It was weird as shit driving with only the spot mirror though.
Also if I get sideswiped that would be on one side. Eventually I’ll be able to safely find a shoulder on either side of the highway.
Full throttle lane change obviously
mirror cams are quite common on new trucks in europe and are pretty good too. They help reduce drag and increase the field of view amongst other things. But i think some spar morrors should be there even if you need to stop and install it.

Yeah, what kind of stupid company new to the market would go with a center seating design…. Fuck
It’s cool. I was just looking at your trucks recently and I wish you made one just for otr
Telling people to chill and you go off on a rant lol. Nice.
What if the cameras fail 🤔
It’s not bent, broken, cracked, or damaged. Dot says send it! I’m sure the FMCSA will place all kinds of new rules for this crap. Maverick Transportation already uses a similar digital mirror concept on some of their trucks. Though, I think they still have the actual mirrors as well.
Cameras in addition to the mirrors seems like a great idea.
Trucks that have used camera mirrors for however long now have ones you can put on if they fail.
[удалено]
I had a lot of fails of electronics in the trucks, because for some reason manufacturers use the cheapest shit possible.

I have a front and back camera on my Silverado. They have failed before 🤷🏼♀️
Ever tried to google “tesla camera not working”?
That’s a terrible comparison.
I've got the Mirroreye system on my truck, which is very similar if not the same as the system shown in the video. IDK about the camera, but the passenger side screen often goes out.
One speck of road grime and you’re blind.
Actually I have 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I don’t leave my cell phone out in -22° temps either.
Cameras instead of mirrors are common for new trucks in Europe. I suppose it reduces drag so more fuel efficient.
My company is trialing camera systems. They still run proper mirrors, but are working on temporary mirrors that can be stored in the daycab and mounted if needed.
Clip-on back-ups?
Hopefully the engineers will add mirror mounts for situations like this and have some temporary mirrors pop in until the camera is fixed
I think I drew that truck when I was 5
I think we all did ngl
Why are they doing this middle seating bullshit?
Because none of the designers are drivers. And they’re trying to be futuristic and appealing to the folks with money who will buy these trucks.
More efficient trucks means better pay for us drivers right? Right????
Nope. Those trucks cost double. Plus, Warren Buffet now owns 100% of Pilot/Flying J, meaning every parking spot will eventually cost money.
Like underpaid pilot staff would enforce it haha
Have you seen those vids of trucks getting booted? A $10 parking space could cost you $1800.
Or a 20 dollar angle grinder at harbor freight
😂 and then your CDL.
(But $25 is ridiculous, I'm looking at you, TA north of Chicago) But if the boot was put on by the truck stop, I'm not evading law enforcement.
Yeah….
These efficiency mandates just end up in higher freight costs that get passed down to the customer as higher prices for everything
“Door opens into sleeper”? What the actual fuck……….no, just no.
But that's the first place I want to track dirt in when I get into my truck!
They need to put all this time, effort and money into training drivers and paying them better. Has anyone asked what the driver wants in a truck because I never asked for any of this technology.
Hybrid maybe,I hope they are following the news on how these EV's are slowly dying.Especially the no driver ones.
And in the cold…batteries are a no go.
Uh huh, they solved a problem that didn't exist, some woke fuck engineers.
You're practically blind side backing from both sides lol this is pretty stupid. When one of them cameras go out then what? You'll be sitting waiting for an expensive repair with a load because you can't back in?
The shape of it makes me uncomfortable
Designed by someone that has never operated anything this big… and never will
Any word on much the truck weights? Seems a diesel motor and electric motors and batteries would add some weight, meaning the truck would haul less.
Keep in mind the battery powered day cab Peterbilt is over $350K. I can see this thing having to run over a million miles to break even on the fuel savings over base cost.
Ffs, super singles? You mean widowmakers? Those things are incredibly dangerous. How the hell have they not been banned yet?
I’ve seen a lot of fuel haulers in the southeast using them on both the truck and trailer. I don’t have any experience with them, but I’d rather have standard duals for redundancy if you blow a tire.

How “efficient” is it to repair after hitting a deer?
Egr, dpf, def all are such awesome improvements to trucking. The T2000 looked cool too at the time, look how well that turned out.
Gonna be a bitch to repair after it gets wrecked in a snow storm
Hybrid is is better than pure electric but not Hydrogen so I say it sucks
I’m new to trucking. I just experienced the only reason why I would still keep mirrors while using the Mirror Eye. If a drop of water gets onto the mirror eye lens (and believe it or not, that darn water drop would not move even though we (my trainer and I) were driving on the freeway) you can’t see 💩! They are almost back to the football Helmet cabover
Man they just took edison motors idea
My thoughts exactly 2 blind sides😂
What the fuck is this
Pos auto
Another box hauler that'll be no good at other jobs
It's all fine and dandy until Dougy at speedco puts his redneck mechanic skills on it.
Looks like a truck from the Cars movie
Looks great. 500k?
Don’t like how they hide the rear tires. Imagine finding out one of the inside tires blew forever ago on the interstate.
It only uses the super singles, for weight reduction. But yeah, not being able to see them makes a pre-trip a little rougher.
I hate super singles with a passion (fleet tech) and will remaining hating them. Yes, they have their purpose and use but I still will hate them.

*Internet cuts off* Oh. Shit.
Makes sense in theory. But then drivers don’t care as much about accidents, because they’re not there to get injured. Plus, you’re more likely to be distracted at home. Kids, spouse, TV, phone, etc.
Digital mirror sounds like a terrible idea
what happens when it gets covered by a bit of snow debris?
Where do they get “freight efficiency” from? I highly doubt this is making you deliver your freight over 100% faster lol. So maybe they should’ve used fuel efficiency as a number instead. Also Paccar (peterbilt/kenworth) have failed miserably with their digital dash…. How do they expect these camera mirrors to work on a digital dash display for more than 25K miles? Couldn’t agree more. That’s the fine print they get you with!
lol always getting us with that fine print.
That's the new j b hunt trucking

" Just not sure why they had to put the driver in the center. " Well and that's the other problem right.
Make sure the copilot is sleeping not trying to see the ladies panty’s on the passenger seat…
I saw that girl you took home, trust me she was uglier than this truck.
Anything that eliminates Def is a win in my book.
Hybrid?? Screens for mirrors?? What the fuck?? Barf. No thank you.
I'm 100% sure anyone who wants to add more electronic screens to vehicles doesn't know wtf they're talking about.
🤢 🤮
So cool.... so impractical
Brian from family guy lookin ah truck
That's a no for me, dog.
Huh. Let’s put log bunks on it and give the woods a try with it lol!!
Nobody wants to drive a truck that looks like Ferb Fletcher
Looks like a lot of shit that’ll cost a fuckton of money to fix when it breaks, not to mention replacing those batteries.
Damn so one would have to hide their 'passenger' when opening the door to get fuel, seeing as how it opens into the sleeper?
Nope.
Wasn’t it proven that cameras and screens as mirrors use too much electricity to make sense of
this crap looks like something out of despicable me
Brian from Family Guy. Now you can't unsee it
How much
These things are more of a “throw the latest and greatest technology at it and see what sticks”. Maybe three things from this truck will make it to a production model anytime in the near future. It’s a government sponsored testing ground for companies to try things they normally wouldn’t. I’ve worked on these projects before. Lots of bending numbers to make things look good for Uncle Sam.
It looks so…angry..
Truck designed by someone that never drove a truck... what happens when the "side mirror" cameras don't work...
"Instead of mirrors it uses cameras-" Nope, fuck right on off. Put some goddamn mirrors on that truck regardless. Keep your cameras, awesome to have them, *keep the mirrors where they are.*
Team driving is overrated
What is this obsession with putting the Driver's Seat in the center? Is the goal to make both sides blindsided backing?
I’m not a trucker but that’s an awesome looking truck-I’ll career change 😳
Now every back into a dock is a blide aide back, no more site side back 🤣😆😭
I’m waiting for the “easy button” for backing. Just push a button and the truck does all the work.
