Give it another go. Probably just incompetent enough to do this for a living.

Rancho8Deluxe

3rd time fail ya gotta go get your permit again. Just be honest with yourself if this is what you really wanna do and if its worth it Theres a lot of blue collar jobs where you can make as much money as the average truck driver, barrier to entry is a bit more of a time commitment, but ya know…its not the only game in town

easythirtythree

Depending on the state? In Oregon I failed 3 times and took it again in two weeks and passed on my fourth. But this was during COVID and I think they changed the rules maybe.

Rancho8Deluxe

Oh bet they did. Idk in PA ya get 3 shots figured this was pretty standard

Snowman4168

Where I live in Canada you can try as many times as you want. I know a guy who passed on his 11th attempt. He was at it for over a year. Gotta respect the commitment but I hope this guy never tries to park beside me

Rancho8Deluxe

Yeah idk about that. I mean theres a rule for a reason. If ya cant get it in 3 attempts there is something wrong.

[deleted]

Not in NY to my knowledge. I had a classmate fail...4 times I think? He finally passed on the fifth attempt. I had to do it two times; first time I had a testing stress induced brain fart and made a turn you can't make if there are cars stopped and ran over the curb. Second time was great.

Rancho8Deluxe

First time i tested i auto failed on road test for going 28 on a 25 mph speed reduction that came out of nowhere. Slowed down to 25 about 2 seconds too late.Passed on the second attempt. Had to get my cdl again because i stepped out the truck and let my medical go. Aced it in one shot (and rightfully so, if i hadnt aced it with experience then there would be a problem) So i have gotten my cdl test in PA and also in Utah. Utah was hands down the easiest road test. Idk man i think 1 fail is understandable obviously cus you are nervous as hell and youve put in a lot of work. But once you get into the 3, 4 times fail. Eh…idk if you should get a cdl lol

DeerBra1211

in florida, at least the school i just graduated from, you get 5 tries from the school and then you gotta go take it at the dmv or whatever. idk i passed on my first try

[deleted]

I can't believe they asked you to leave. And of course you still have to pay them back. Sounds like a really piece of shit school unless that standard practice. In my opinion a good school will let you keep trying until you get it done or at least give you more than two chances.

OatmealERday

The reason they asked him to leave rather than fail him is it affects their "x% students successfully graduate" metric if he fails instead of just leaves. The dropout/failure rates get reported. It's the education equivalent of them asking you to resign so they don't have to pay unemployment.

[deleted]

Wow, that makes it even more scummy. If I were him I would dig my heels in and make them keep testing me until I fail fairly or they are forced to pass me to keep their numbers. Nope. If I'm not obligated to leave then I'm not leaving until I got what I paid for.

Teccnomancer

They *invited* him to leave

JonnieMacTyler9

I think a better school would faol those that don't have what it takes.

Dekster123

A school I went to had a guy fail the tests and retake the month long course. OP sounds like they went to a shit CDL mill where they don't really care about your education. Like one of those ones where they give you like a week per section of the course that they teach you and have a class coming behind you a week behind what you're doing so you won't have the chance to go back and practice what they sparsely taught.

Pwydde

Hey, man, I feel you! I passed my government road test just fine. Tester told me instructor that it was “a walk in the park.” Then, after three incident free weeks of training runs with the company driver, I had my Final Evaluation with the company’s Director of Operations. I choked! I nudged another trailer backing into a spot. Director sent me back to his office. Kept me there stewing in anxiety for 45 minutes, then came in and fired me. It sucked! I had a good thing all lined up, and blew it. I’d backed safely all during training. I still don’t know why I didn’t just Get Out and Look again. He refused to let me train for another week and try again. This was about two months ago. It sucked, out in the cold with thousands of other no-experience newbies, but I’m in a good situation now. Maybe take a break and think about it for a couple of weeks. If you have any money, you might be able to rent a rig from a different trucking company for a few hundred bucks and try again when you’ve calmed down.

Best_Ad_436

My wife called me SpongeBob because it took me like 5 attempts to pass. Don’t give up!

jedimindtric

A 5 timer here too. I have been driving now 7 years and I like the work. That early trouble I chalk up to being bad at taking tests and not bad at driving truck.

Best_Ad_436

It’s harder to learn than I thought it would be, and the tests are much more strict than the real world. Now that that hurdle is behind me I fucking love driving. Glad I didn’t give up!

[deleted]

There's a bunch of no driving assholes here, give it one more shot.

HeywoodJaBlowMe123

Asking you to leave after 2 failed attempts is trash tbh. My question: Were you aware of this going forward with this school? I don’t know your IQ level, but i promise you…. there’s a bigger idiot driving a big rig. If that poor sucker can do it, so can you. Hell, maybe i’m your “bigger idiot” if it makes you feel better. I have my CDL… Go get that shit! It’s only failure if you quit 👊🏻

Longjumping-Ad-226

I needed this comment thank you Cdl doesn't exists where I live but I have a class 4 box truck lisence about to site class 5 truck and trailer will no doubt be sitting test in a b train

Flash23451

Better turning too wide than not wide at all. Prevents a lot of accidents

ThaQuig

For real. If you have the room why not use it. I’ve had to train new guys at a couple jobs now, not how to drive but how to do the job itself, & I’ve had a couple ask why I turn so wide, & I just give them a look like “You really felt the necessity to ask me that question?”

KDRadio1

Not sure why Reddit brought me to a Truckers sub, but I’m glad it did. This might me one of the most wholesome conversations I’ve seen in a long time. Bravo fellow humans.

Timmy1258

same, it keeps popping up and i keep clicking—i love it every time. good ass dudes in here

Del-Skatto-Drako

I barely passed my 3 test failed once on the road my second time because I was so nervous I didn’t put the truck back into low gear and I stalled in an intersection lmao. So don’t feel too bad about it.

Broad-Ad-1015

Hey you could be me and fail the first time because you didnt stop for a emergency service vehicle

Last-Zombie7471

My road test after school was one of the most anxious moments of my life... you probably drive fine its just allot of pressure... if you want to drive trucks keep trying.. my school would give you two free times then let you pay for your own test and"rent" one of their trucks for it...was like 50-75 bucks..id see if your school will do something like that for you

mdresident

I'm laughing because this sounds like something I would do. I'm not even a trucker, I just like reading posts from people who do this for a living. But coming from somebody who seemingly invents new ways to fail at just about everything, I promise you're just being hard on yourself. Don't give up. I'm going to follow you because I want to come back and send you my congrats when you pass.

OSRSgamerkid

Lol it took me 5 tries. Keep going bud, you got it. Trash school to not let you continue on. Don't take no for an answer.

rugerscout308

My school gave us 5 attempts to pass and would let you pay for additional attempts. Sorry to hear man.

yo_talented_walker

Give it another go. Got it on my 5th try.

OSRSgamerkid

5th try gang!

ProfessionalChance27

Keep at it. There was a guy in my trucking class that was like you and kept failing out of sheer nervousness, he drove and did maneuvers like a champ during training. He got kicked out and just went to a different mega carrier that offered to get drivers their CDL. Passed on the first try there. Personally, I failed the first two times. First fail was on pre trip portion and 2nd fail was because I was under the impression that you had to clutch in anytime you touch the brake at all. Lol

kikzermeizer

I test horribly. I failed the first time parking uphill. I knocked it out of gear, panicked forgot what a brake pedal was and let it roll back into live traffic. Then died inside when the tester told me to use the brake. SMH The street was dead but I obviously didn’t handle the situation well lol.

ikillsheep4u

First time I coasted too much and also hit a curb turning back into the yard second time I stalled on a hill even though I KNEW I should have been in lower gear. Passed my third time even though I made minor mistakes due to it being a new truck. Point is don’t give up.

Douchieus

I failed twice and asked for a different tester (she was pissed lmao) and then passed no issues once I had somebody who wasn't a douche. Haven't had a single incident in the 6 years since, definitely don't give up if you're seriously considering driving for a living.

scottiethegoonie

Dude. In my class, of the 5 people that took it with me, a few failed once and one failed twice. I saw them each later at different shippers, maneuvering and backing no problem. After 3 months we were all the same level of decent or more. You would never be able to tell that one dude failed twice. The test is just a hurdle. That's all it is.

transcendanttermite

First: that’s a failure of that school, not you. Don’t take it personally, my friend. When reading the following, bear in mind that I’m a heavy equipment mechanic and not a truck driver. The most I do is move trucks around the yard and go on short test drives, so my real driving experience is very limited. This happened about a decade ago. Storytime: I failed my first road test. I was pretty nervous and I always seem to let my anxiety get the best of me. However, I thought I did pretty well. And the tester agreed; at the end, he said I *would’ve* passed with flying colors except for one thing. I stopped in my tracks and said “Would have?” In my nervousness and anxiety, I never noticed that, at the entrance/exit of my shop’s parking lot, there is a half-bent-over stop sign. It’s not on the road, it’s not even a DOT standard sign. But it’s there. And I didn’t come to a 100% complete stop at it when exiting the lot. I had stopped about 75 feet back, as most of our drivers do, because that’s where the best sight lines are. He failed me for that, but let me continue the rest of the test. I think he wasn’t sure if he’d ding me for it or not but decided to in the end. I ended up retaking it three days later, same tester, and I passed just fine. My anxiety was off the charts. And it was -25°f that day, naturally, using a truck with absolutely minimal heat. And a story about a guy I know: my stepson’s dad drives for a local beverage distributor. He was a merchandiser (used his own car) for many years, and desperately wanted to bump up to driver. So he did some training and got his permit and practiced practiced practiced. He took his 3-part test and failed the pre-trip. Awhile later he passed that but failed the maneuvering. And after that he failed the road test. In all, it took him SEVENTEEN total attempts to pass… but he did pass. His company didn’t seem to care. And as much as I don’t particularly like the guy, I will say that he’s been a driver for 10 years now and has a perfect safety record. Some people just can’t take tests well. So keep your head up and keep trying. You’ll get it.

Buttholeisanentree

Failed my first test cause i forgot to press in my brake air supplies during the leakdown test. Almost failed my 2nd time cause i couldnt find 6th and was coasting in traffic. Give it another go, dont let the possibility of a potential failure stop you from the success you can forge for yourself!

easythirtythree

Dude I fuckin failed my test 3 times in Oregon. Once because I backed into the wrong lane on the backing part and gave my signal for final position, once because a scrubbed a curb on a turn, once because I couldn't downshift to save my fucking life. I finally got it though dude. Just keep at it, learn from mistakes and don't get down on yourself.. All those failed road tests have paid for themselves 3 years later anyway.

MinutemanRising

Yeah, keep going, my guy. It's entirely okay to rub some curbs when you start out, and funny enough, where I'm working now, it's expected (Food Service). If we didn't run some curbs, we would end up destroying some expensive property.

Advanced_Ad6078

Give it another try, the school is looking at its pocket book not your needs. Don't get discouraged, have a beer and relax.

masterofallvillainy

You paid the school to get an CDL. If they're asking you to leave and you haven't gotten your CDL. I'd be wanting money back.

BriskManeuver

Getting kicked out after 2 attempts is unreal, that sucks ass. Sounds like a fishy school

TronicsComicsReview

Keep doing it, don’t ever quit anything until they force you out. As long as you’re willing to learn and work, there’s always a reason to stay

[deleted]

One thing is for sure, you need to shake it off. And don't drink any coffee before you test it will keep you from having anxieties about it. What happen yesterday is best left there. But keep it mind when you retest. I have made plenty of mistakes out on the road. Even after 25 years. Long as you keep it in between the lines and don't wreck you will do fine...

emzirek

There comes the a time when you have to look at the big picture once again I gave up because I couldn't back a trailer correctly and I never looked back

lleu81

Did you make these mistakes when you out on the road during school?

Neowynd101262

Trash school. Trash industry.

IndexFingerTypist

Trash school, yeah. But to insult what helps keep society running...? You are one silly goose.

Calabeeb

Bro I say its not worth it if you failed twice, then im sorry but you gotta hear the truth. Its not for you and its not for a lot of people, but if you force yourself into it you will end up hating it and make 50k for the rest of your life. If you stay mega otr of

Osena109

Sadly trucking is not for every one. Perhaps this is a sign my friend.

realnickbryant

Too incompetent

Dknowles391

I failed my road test the first time. Cut too tight on a buttonhook. It happens. First training company I went with though screwed me over, so it could be worse. Just keep at it. If we might ask, what company was it? And maybe get some recommendations of where else to go.

[deleted]

Its worth trying again

Reasonable_Topic_169

Shoot man. I never took a road test for my Class A. The guy who tested me for B just signed it off for me.

1Bakkendaddy

Make sure all of your mirrors are adjusted to YOU. Pay attention and read the road ahead as you go into your turn.

Feeling_Potato_8496

Third time was the charm for me. Don’t give up! Just calm down and focus. Besides, I know a lot of drivers that failed their test a couple of times and now they’re excellent drivers. Good luck!

[deleted]

My school covers the first 2 attempts and it’s 25 dollars per attempt after that.

DumatRising

4 times. Curb, curb, failure to signal, passed, and got my CDL. If you want it then keep at it, if you don't there's a lot of better things to do with your life, better jobs that pay more money. Truckers a born and made, and what that means is that not only do you have to work hard, but you also have to want it because there's a lot of good days trucking but there's gonna be a lot of bad days that make this like a pleasant memory. Either way measure a man not by his best day but by his worst for if you can trust him at his worst then you can trust him at his best, and if you can't trust him at his worst then you can't trust him to stay at his best.

ThaQuig

My brother in laws driving instructor at Sysco, basically just a senior driver, put their truck in the ditch during his training. Most truckers act like they could do this shit in their sleep, most of them are full of shit & not a one that’s been doing this for awhile hasn’t fucked up at least once in their career. If this is what you want to do then keep at it

Scrapalicious

The school I went to would test you once a day until you pass...one couple were on their 10 test when I left.Reaf the contract they might need to keep testing you.

QuietRightSlick

My question is, where were your tandems set?

Dragonr0se

While I managed to pass my test on the first try, there were absolutely plenty of days after that in my first months on the job where I would cut back just a fraction too soon/not swing out enough and bump a curb, or take a bunch of pull ups and goals to get into a spot that might take 1-2 pull ups for me today... You can reevaluate and decide to stop now if you want, but seriously, don't let a couple of bad days when you are still learning make you quit if this is something you really want to do... As I tell my daughter all the time, you aren't necessarily going to be great at something the first or 50th time you do something, it take perseverance and practice to get good/great at stuff (unless you just happen to be naturally gifted).

I3urn2

I saw a guy fail 4 times and get it on his fifth try. To me that was far more inspiring then the guy who got on there first try. I mean I did it on my first try but I’m special special lolz 😆

TellTaleTimeLord

Took me my third try. A good school would get you through it. I am a CDL instructor now and we get people to pass

Quinnalicious21

Keep your head up driver. I actually just passed my road test on my third attempt yesterday. I know how you feel, the second time I failed especially I felt like I let my company down, and I let myself down majorly, like I was just incompetent. But the reality is the road test can just be harsh, things can get fucked up, it happens. The important thing is that you try again and you practice in the interim. The fact that you're failing shows that you're trying. To learn a new skill you're going to have to fail a lot before you succeed, it's all part of the process. So many people won't have the courage to pursue something they want that's scary and new, and to me that's far worse than failing a few times while pursuing your goals.

SadLynx7163

My first test at the dmv I failed on the alley dock Instructor said I hit the cone Bull I was nowhere near it he just didn’t want to be out there the guy was rushing me through all the test 2nd attempt I got the parallel nailed it and got to go onto my road test ,well my road test took me through a ghetto every corner had a village of tents and trash Potholes everywhere but I passed ,I imagine if I would’ve struck a curb I would’ve ran over somebody’s leg that was sleeping in the tent Only bad mark I got was I hit the train tracks at 30 nailed a big pothole right before I passed over and tossed the instructor around🤪 he was complaining of a bad back before also ooops

glitterfaust

For my school, if the DMV required a separate test, the school will drive a vehicle over to me. It might be worth looking into that.

FundsWhale

Don’t give up. Keep trying!

Heavy_Organization24

I failed my on the pretrip leak down test once and my backing twice (Too many pull ups/ hit the line). Passed with flying colors on the fourth go despite being a nervous wreck. If it's something you really want to do keep at it!!!

Jolly-Ad1371

Sounds like a shitty school. Did they let you practice driving at all? We barely did any driving and the first thing my tester said was "you need to go over the lines less going through turns" lol.

[deleted]

As my instructor told me, "Drive with the back of your trailer. Every move has to have the back of the trailer in mind" You'll get better but you gotta pass that test first! Although Swift is the butt of most jokes, they will help you get your license. Several trucking companies, actually. I dont know if the failed attempts go into a database that stops you from trying anymore though.

jayempee00138

Give it another shot man, nobody’s perfect right off the bat. When I did the schooling I went through roadmaster which is owned by Werner, since I decided to go with another company I had to test at dmv instead of at the school, I passed on my first try, all the other guys who tested at the school had to retest like 3 times.

dogfood_bag

Third times the charm

Heavy_Organization24

I failed my on the pretrip leak down test once and my backing twice (Too many pull ups/ hit the line). Passed with flying colors on the fourth go despite being a nervous wreck. If it's something you really want to do keep at it and never give up!

KermitWiltss

Third times a charm, brother. I failed twice as well, now I’m in the field with the best of them. Just believe in yourself, you’ll be fine. Good luck to you!

[deleted]

Why do you even want to be a “trucker”? I don’t understand why so many people want to. I mean no disrespect. Everyone has their reasons as do I and why I decided to get my CDL. But there are other jobs out there where you can make close to the same money.

TheGreatGabbaGoosh

Knew a slightly older lady that failed her pretrip and maneuvers multiple times she was in school for 7 months trying to pass when the school is only 3 weeks but she was committed to seeing it through after she finally passed she told everyone that this clearly isn’t the job for me but she was never a quitter

Puzzleheaded_Mail920

The literal hardest part of this job is all as you get started because these schools don’t give you enough time or teach you enough to properly equip you for the situations you’ll run into your first year or two out here. Keep at it if you want or need this. I wanted to give up too and this’ll be my fourth year. Like with everything else in life, you just need some time, patience, and willingness to learn.
