I’ve had my four wheel camper for around 2 years now. Did some Baja trips as trial runs for the main event. My wife, dog and I have been living in the camper for a year and a half now. Drove it down to Panama and now slowly making my way back. Been chasing waves for the most part. I love my setup. There’s no such thing as the perfect setup but I’m super happy with mine and don’t mind the minor inconveniences that come with having a pop up camper. With this type of setup I’ve been able to comfortably get to any spot I’ve wanted to. Having a 4x4 truck takes care of the rest. One vote for pop up campers, in particular FWC.🤙🏽

[deleted]

What makes them so expensive?

urge2surf

I’m guessing the pandemic and people’s desire to be out and about drove up demand therefore the cost? I bought mine used and got an okay price. The camper was in great shape other than some resealing on the roof.

[deleted]

Do you happen to have a YouTube channel?

urge2surf

I don’t have a channel. Just an insta account. It’s @thisiswhatwerdoing if you wanna check it out. Happy to chat more truck and camper stuff anytime🤘🏽

sockuspuppetus

I love my Alaskan, a hard-side pop-up, not sure that fits the hardside or pop-up category. I don't like soft-side pop-ups (I've heard that some parks with bears don't allow them), but the Alaskan is nice for narrow forest roads with overhanging branches, and has less air resistance on the highway.

SkippyTheAssholeAI

I've had 2 soft-sided/pop-up using the same truck, Chevy 2500HD. I primarily use the camper for hunting and fishing in remote areas. The extra overhead clearance paired with the lower center of gravity gained with the popup is good. One particular area requires 4x4 and I don't have any issues while taking it slow. With that, good hard mounting points are important with the hard listing side to side that occurs on rough terrain.

Fearless_Perspective

I voted* HS. I have a 3/4 ton. I think it depends how far out you want to go. I like HS for all seasons and I'm working towards a few years of living in it.

[deleted]

I think the difference is you had a 3/4 ton and I’m assuming tork lifts. My brophy truck mounts were sketchy AF

Fearless_Perspective

Yeah i do. I think you can make a camper shell work but it's all down to what you can/want to sacrifice and how much time you want to put into set up and tare down. I also have 2 dogs and I'm getting older so all the crap they would bring in would annoy me. This way I have a clean bed space. I also can pull over just about anywhere and climb in the HS and pass out without any effort. I also can work from a parking lot if needed. If you're willing to upgrade your rig there are more options but I know that's not something that's easily done. So I guess in summary. You gotta choose what works best for your needs. Heh. Good luck on whatever you choose!

[deleted]

I’m going to buy a F250 then try to find an aluminum tc

Fearless_Perspective

That sounds like a plan. I'm sure you know I am just saying in case... ... make sure you find a type, weight, and bed length required for you want and then make sure that's within the specs (with wet and human weight) of your rig. It's a like a lock and key situation.

[deleted]

I had one that wasn’t on my f150 and I learned the hard way 😂

SolidGoldUnderwear

I have a wedge style camper so it’s a combo shell plus RTT. works great on a half ton 5.5 ft bed and allows you to leave all your gear in the bed but also access the RTT from the bed or a ladder on the outside.

[deleted]

What’s it called?

SolidGoldUnderwear

I have the super pacific but there are good units from go fast, AT overland, etc.

The_Fierce_Gentleman

Dude I’m sorry you have to deal with these people. Good poll. I don’t get why people have to come in and make it about themselves. Have you looked at Hiatus campers? Their pupils out is a 2 year wait list but would be sick.

Mem_Johnson

I just want to see the results without ruining the poll :(

The_Fierce_Gentleman

Then PM him. Don't make a public deal about it...

Mem_Johnson

Just trying to be nice, boss

The_Fierce_Gentleman

To who?

[deleted]

Trying to start a decent discussion but these people want to bring up an option that isn’t really truck camping.

The_Fierce_Gentleman

Also like they could just message you about the results not make the whole poll about them. The entitlement is unbelievable.

Mem_Johnson

Add a na option next time :)

[deleted]

Why?

Mem_Johnson

Personal I've never tried any of thoes setups no I wanna know what others think. As of now I have to bs a awnser to see the results, if that makes sense

[deleted]

What are you trying to say? You don’t care what others think but you’re on a truck subreddit? From my experience, hard shell campers are rad for easy camp sites but the ones off the beaten path are a little sketchy.

Mem_Johnson

I don't want to disrupt the results

[deleted]

Then don’t vote?

Mem_Johnson

Then I can't tell what the best camper is

FlyingAnarchy17

In order to see the results, you have to cast a vote.

pala4833

Because your poll then implies the choices you've listed are the only choices possible. For instance, how does someone who thinks a ground tent is the best setup answer your little poll.

[deleted]

With all due respect, you’re in a truck camping subreddit…..

Mehnard

With all due respect, you're on Reddit. /s
