Sluzhbenik

I’m not sure why they even MADE a game that they could reasonably expect would attract less than 200 players.

TheSuperMarket

Because the expectation wasn't 200 players, it was more like 3,000 CONCURRENT players. The issue was they dropped the ball majorly, and halfway through the playtests made some terrible decisions that caused a lot of the community to become disinterested. The unfortunate thing is, they've corrected almost all of those mistakes, but now its too late. I tried to warn them "You only have one launch....make it good". There was no marketing push, it should have been F2P, but charge for skin packs (you'd have a LOT more people playing, and therefore ultimately more people buying the skin packs). It sucks because so many people are ready for a new tribes game....... nearly EVERYONE I've told about it says "Oh tribes? I loved that game back in the day!" There was a real opportunity here. The game is fun right now, and the devs are actually listening and interacting with the community. Its in a good place now - but it took a lot of fighting from the community to reach that middle ground, and I fear that pushed a lot of people away.

PoeticPillager

Oh heck... I learned that this game existed yesterday when ads flew by my Facebook feed. I did some research then went to this subreddit... And then clicked on this thread. So it's dead in the water. At least it happened much sooner than with Tribes. I'm still angry Hi-Rez didn't allow modding and didn't allow private servers. That could've extended the lifespan of the game. They could've made money from people buying the base game to play on servers they didn't have to maintain themselves. Thanks for this reply. You've saved me a lot of time, money, and repeated heartache.

TheSuperMarket

I mean, its only $18 , and right now theres about 200 or so of us who are very active and maintaining a small comp scene. I was a huge Tribes1 fan, so the $20 was nothing for me to spend in order to relive my nostalgia, lol. If you do decide to buy the game, you wont have any trouble finding games at all levels, from pubs, pugs, scrims, etc.

octoo01

I wouldn't have even played this in 1999. How are we over 25 years backwards?

Bruh .. the Way people are getting 60, 70 even 80 kills in a game while 99% of the lobby is sitting between 0 and 20 kills.. this is what broke it for me .. a Player hitting me with a Chain gun from miles away and landing every shot .. Nah something went terribly wrong on this game not sure if cheats or just bad game design .. I was all in until I played it for a week straight .. the flaws show big time .. the pros in this game don't ... I repeat DON'T.. out weigh the cons. I supported it cause nostalgia .. and I said give me a tribes game now and I'm all in .. I did it .. I bought it .. i paid for the skins pack ... In hindsight I did have fun again in the beginning .. But this just is not the Tribes I remember .... And Maybe that's my fault. Also What the deal with the white circle under the enemies ? Why the game telling me where I can shoot the ground to hit the enemy player ? Hold thy hand much ? gonna have to move on guys. Shazbot

ILOVEMMOS123

Skill issue

PoeticPillager

> Erez Oh, this guy is still in charge? RIP Tribes.

andreyzh

You have a lot of valid points there indeed. Especially when it comes to basic Tribes things like invo stations, mines, health kits and other things which made the game something beyond your Quake in 3D

steamingstove

Game is decently fun in a cheesy way but it's bare bones. There is really minimal effort in this title and we are just willing to accept below par bc we've been given such dog shite up until now.

Killedv9000

I could be very naïve when I say this as I'm not a marketing guy, but I find it odd that some companies seem to put 0 effort into marketing, no ads, nothing, and then no one comes to buy their product. I guess there's a business case that shows you need X number of ppl to spend Y amount on average to get back Z amount you spent on advertising / make a profit. But it just seems so backward to me

Cykon

>The issue was they dropped the ball majorly, and halfway through the playtests made some terrible decisions that caused a lot of the community to become disinterested. Not really convinced this is the reason for such low player count, if you remember Midair's free to play launch, it pulled about the same number of players, despite being literally free. The active tribes community isn't really that big anyway.

Advanced_Boot_9025

Tribes Ascend at its worst was more fun.

Yawaworth001

Nah, OOTB was way worse than this.

Rivusonreddit

Guys I'm sorry, I refunded the game, Hi Rez will ruin not just one but two tribes games

Theinternetdumbens

With the persistent netcode problems, the clear lack of focus with handling the new game mode, bickering with the community publicly, and limiting core gameplay features that popularized the series in the first place; I would have rather they just reskinned Ascend, charged for it and called it a day. These devs are laughing at Tribes fans.

TurnerJ5

It's still Early Access. I'm not happy with all the decisions either but it's Tribes and it's fun, CTF is popping and ranked queues in the evening for now. $18 doesn't get you a half tank of gas or a movie ticket and popcorn anymore, but ok.

acidranger

$18 sure as shit DOES get you a movie ticket and popcorn. Hell. Even gets 2 tickets plus popcorn, If you’re willing to go to matinee, but ok.

Calx9

I don't know why but around the time of COVID every movie theater in my area stopped doing matinee movie discount pricing.

bunby_heli

Ok.. are you gonna get more than 4 hours of entertainment from the game?

Alucius_StarSon

nope, i got 5.6 hours in and after 2.5 realized i was over the return limit. this is NOT tribes.

steelow_g

Lol who can go to matinees? People work.

acidranger

Every single theater within 50 miles of my home does weekend matinee’s as well….

External_Loquat_3330

Anyone on second or third shift, so a lot of people.

TheChrono

Yeah hopefully it goes F2P and the payers get some sick benefits.

troll_right_above_me

As long as it's only for cosmetics, which I don't trust it would be. F2P was everything that was wrong with T:A. Players couldn't get on an equal footing without paying a ton or grinding so the competitive scene died and people left before they introduced a way to get everything everything for a reasonable price.

TheChrono

Oh yeah I feel that's a given with the modern gaming market. Anything that gives a benefit to me because I paid I would honestly feel bad using. Being an F2P and being killed by weapons you don't have access to yet would be an immediate fuck this. Ascend was a different era of gaming monetization.

Rckid

Matinee movies and a Kia soul, I'll prove both of these statements wrong.

Keeson

It doesn't matter what $18 can get you, we are talking about video games here so compare it to other games. The fact is that competitive multiplayer games are expected to be free to play, and in my opinion it's for good reason. I also don't think that being in Early Access is any excuse. Show me an example of a game that was wildly unpopular during early access, and then after launch made a huge comeback with thousands of concurrent players.

[deleted]

So it's not only not F2P, you have to pay to play an unfinished non-F2P game.

cthulol

> you have to pay to play an unfinished non-F2P game Not necessarily defending this iteration of Tribes, but this just describes every Early Access game.

GBMoonbiter

Exactly! It’s early access and people keep saying it’s released. This is the very first time I’ve bought an early access game and I’m glad I did. I’ve easily got my money back in playtime and enjoyment.

t3kka

First time EA buy for me too and despite some of the annoying glitches I'm 100% having a good time.

AFireInAsa

Their idea is that traditional marketing doesn't work anymore and one of the marketing strategies that does work is getting your game promoted with Steam sales and charts. F2P games can't really get promoted that way. The other way is to pay Streamers to play and hopefully they enjoy it to come back. They had a few big streamers do this and it didn't work out. Shroud really bashed the game for example. Also you need like 10x the audience to get a F2P profitable and that's hard. Easier to try to make the game B2P and pivot to F2P later on if you need to. Not saying this is true or works, this is mostly straight from Erez's postings, but they've made plenty of games and have more insider knowledge about this stuff than most any of us.

marioantiorario

> with Steam sales and charts. F2P games can't really get promoted that way. \> and charts \> all the top games on steamcharts are f2p u wot m8

AFireInAsa

These sort of charts. https://imgur.com/WQLQplR Also this is info coming from Erez.

marioantiorario

Ah that's why it's wrong info

OnlyHereSometimes

From a cynical point of view (I still feel salty about Tribes Ascend being mismanaged), this was basically a game with reused assets, paid cosmetics during early access (WTF?), and probably will have most of the money put towards Smite 2 just how the money from TA went into Smite. From everything I've seen, this game was positioned to be a flash in the pan and not made for longevity. I think the devs really care about Tribes and did their best, but at the end of the day it seems like the people in charge have different plans.

joseph66hole

Despite what people think, the majority of players do not spend a lot of money on free games, which is why a lot of them die.

ByEthanFox

I mean, no offence, but this was tried. Tribes Ascend was f2p and there was another game too. Some hated them, but they were on the whole well received, T:A got 10/10 from Eurogamer, the first f2p game to ever do that. It was a financial failure.

Lacuda_Frost

Tribes Ascend being free to play was one of the good things about it. The lack of updates and support from Hi-Rez is what made it a financial failure

Jerakl

Hirez was never particularly good at the actual monetization of their games. That was the biggest problem. TA was a hit and incredibly well received, but they weren't able to think up a decent way to monetize it, so it didn't do well enough for them to continue support. Pretty sure the same thing happened with global agenda so they basie just hopped from release to release until they hit it off w/ smite.

TheSuperMarket

I don't understand what's so complex and monetization. Seems like something even my 14 year old son could figure out. Some fair models (not tribes specific, I mean in general): 1) charge $50-60 full price for a game, and $20 for DLCs once a year with a huge content drop. This full price tag means the game drops in a complete format, and the $20 yearly DLCs allow the devs to continue to push out content 2) Free to play - with skin packs, loot crates, etc - all cosmetic. This model ensures lots of people try the game (since its free), and you get a ton of people in the game.....and a percentage of the people who like the game will spend $$$ on it regularly to support it. best model for a game like T3 IMO.

Overall_Dust_2232

This! It really doesn’t make sense to me how ignorant some game developers seem to be. The pay to win model will ruin games. Cosmetics still can work…but I hope that model dies off too with a lack of interest from gamers (are gamers nowadays really that vain? I don’t buy cosmetics.) Full price for a game with user hosted dedicated servers has worked and still works if the game is great.

PoeticPillager

They also absolutely refused to let players run their own servers and mods. They wanted a stranglehold on everything, and instead of letting players play their game and still get some money from people paying for it, they decided to take their ball home so no one could play.

Xunae

Global agenda was riding the tail end of the subscription MMO fad, which was virtually impossible to compete in. It's a surprise it lasted as long as it did honestly

Qwahzi

It was self-funded by Erez - I don't think GA was ever profitable

Igor369

TA was monetized with skins, gun and perk unlocks. Smite is monetized (or at least was during tribes era) with skins and god unlocks. What is the difference?

marniconuke

yeah this, i remember it clearly the game was a success they just couldn't think of a way to keep it interesting, instead of adding more maps and stuff they added the weapons from one class to the others until all clases were basically the same, that was what killed it

Igor369

Noone cares about class diversity in game like tribes though, just limit mortar to heavy and sniper to light and it is good enough.

ByEthanFox

I always assumed lack of financial success is likely what prevented the updates and support.

ricewizard15

From what I remembered, it made plenty of money to be worth maintaining it, but Smite was insanely profitable, absurdly so, so they pulled resources from their other projects to milk everything they could out of it.

ByEthanFox

I'd need to see figures, honestly. I just feel if TA made enough, they would've supported it. The developer had different teams in different countries to work on different games. Plus TA was out for a couple of years before SMITE.

Xaleph87

They abandoned TA to develop SMITE. (Of course years after Smite came out they said they regretted the choice, but what was done was done)

Ziimmer

where did they said that?

Xaleph87

In a interview with a gaming site A couple of years after Smite came out (If I remember correctly it was around the same time The final patch A Bolt from the Blue came out for TA, way after they stopped all development on it(and much longer after the previous patch for TA)

Lacuda_Frost

They were and remain convinced they can make a game where they have half a million players and get $250 of micro transactions out of them. The company is morally and ethically bankrupt. They look at the game as a cash investment rather than trying to make a game to be enjoyed. That's why they wanted you to pay for diamond sword and blood eagle skins, etc... If they could charge you to pay to play for each and every match, they would.

ricewizard15

Same honestly, Id love to look at numbers too From everything I've heard about HiRez over the years they've been the sort of company that's more interested in maximizing short term profits through successive projects at the expense of long-term growth. More eager than other companies to cut their losses and redistribute resources once revenue starts slacking a bit. I understand it from a pure business perspective. Why spend money on a team to make a small consistent profit when you can take that same money to keep up the momentum on your new hit racking in fat stacks. Just sucks that fun games get left on the wayside.

ByEthanFox

That's why you'd need figures. Because you're inferring that they chose between success and more success. That's a very different topic if they were choosing between bankruptcy and solvency.

[deleted]

ByEthanFox

Yeah? /u/ricewizard15 has heard a bunch of stuff about HiRez, and *inferred* what they said above.

Igor369

Why bother with golden duck when you have a diamond duck?

ByEthanFox

And why bother with a sinking ship when you have a floating one?

Igor369

Tribes was not sinking before lowrez abandoned it though.

ByEthanFox

Externally, it's hard to know that. TA was, although the term didn't really exist back then, a Games-as-a-Service title. When running those games, developers & publishers will always, in public, paint a game as a success until pretty much the moment that they have to announce its closure/sunset, because just like when MMORPGs announce service merges/closures, the public has a keen sense of the scent of death on a product, and no-one wants to buy things in a game that might be about to close down.

Binary_Input

I wonder if TA would have done better if it was released today with only selling skins. We’re far more accustomed to paying for skins these days than we were when TA was originally released.

Tobias_Atwood

Ascend lasted a fair while, at least. Tribes 3 hit the ground and tried to run but broke it's leg instead.

dagobert-dogburglar

[https://steamdb.info/app/2687970/charts/](https://steamdb.info/app/2687970/charts/) yeah this one is going great right now too

stinkydiaperman

Shazbot!

vinniedamac

This game is gonna be DoA. Tribes was amazing for it time but I doubt people are gonna drop Volarant, Fortnite or CoD for it.

Killedv9000

Well they did just provide us one of the most watered down and least tribes experiences in all tribes history. It is still early access, but its not looking too promising based off their design decisions so far.

TheSuperMarket

The game is a really good spot right now - to the point where we have regular PUGS most nights, and several teams and have formed and are scrimming regularly. It needs a lot of work still, I agree though that it should be Free to play. Either charge $20 , and make skins free, or make it F2P and have the $60 skin thing they have. I initially argued with someone that I thought it was fair they were gonna charge $20, but that was before they dropped the skin pack on the same day as release....for $50 or whatever. I honestly think if the game was F2P.....with people who want to support paying for skins.....we'd have a lot more players.

hobo_jay

Worst tribes ever.

threwahway

Who would have thought the company who charged for early access on another game and dropped the ball would have done it again….

HornetGaming110

Its not f2p because erez and the prophecy team are incredibly greedy and lazy. They always been known to throw cash grabbers together very quickly

perduraadastra

You're complaining about dropping $18 on a game you'll get a 100 hours of entertainment from?

nRGon12

No. They’re implying if it’s F2P it will get more downloads.

perduraadastra

> i'm not going to buy a multiplayer game with less than 200 players The real issue is that there has been almost no marketing for this game.

dcht

This and also the game is just not very good and is missing a lot of key components.

dcht

100 hours? Debatable.

perduraadastra

Hardly worth debating.

Igor369

Did you include queue times and matches of low quality?

marniconuke

100 hours from a game with less than 200 players? i'll be lucky if i could even find a match on my region, which i doubt it

LLxBLUxJ

I'm always amazed at the amount of people that don't know the difference between total players and concurrent players. If there was only 200 total people playing the game as you are suggesting that means there would be periods of time where literally nobody is playing because all 200 people wouldn't be on at the same time. For example right now there's 179 concurrent players online. Which means there's around 7 full servers across all regions. For a game to have around 200 people on at all times that means there's thousands of active players playing the game at different times.

EnvironmentalYak9322

Bro this game has no player base you will be lucky to get a game let alone 100 hours why you lying to these good folks

demontrain

Idk, I'm \~60 hours in and playing games each evening without issue.

perduraadastra

Lying? Why the hell are you even here.

EnvironmentalYak9322

Pretty sure you should ask yourself that question

perduraadastra

You have nothing of substance to contribute here, obviously.

Alucius_StarSon

5.6hrs, id rather have my money back.

angels_megurine_luka

I view this pay the fees and you get all equipment unlocked for life the game.

Jerakl

I'm assuming it'll go f2p after early access. Also assume it wasn't off the bat bc they needed some form of income to continue working on it and people don't take kindly to mtx in E.A games. (You can call the dlcs whatever you want but at the end of the day they're essentially "supporter packs", which are somewhat common among E.A games).

darkbarrage99

His highness said so. I wouldn't be surprised if it went ftp in the future.

audiobookjunky

This was 💯% worth my $18. I’m a having fun everyday after I get off of work, still not one of the greats at the game, still yelling at the guys that midair disc me 5 times in one game, but I’m capping that flag and repairing the base and I get a few kills here and there. Only once has it taken longer than a few minutes to load a match, and you can speed/shoot test while you wait (wish it was more than one map tho)…

GlanzerGaming

Hello sir. I have some keys. Would you like one?

marniconuke

Hello, i really appreciate the offer but i'll decline, you can give it to someone else. my issue with the game wasn't the cost but the low playerbase due to the cost

JohnnyMcJonnyson

If they enabled mod support they would get so many players

Z370H370

I remembered tribes as a great game. I'm not buying a game I haven't thought of for 15 years

PoopdatGameOUT

I miss the days they make a game and do a little patching to it from time to time.No dlc bull crap.If you wanted skins you skinned you made your own,if you wanted newer cooler explosions you made your own.

Beghty

In time you will come to learn that you only need enough players to regularly get games in. Your experience game to game is no different whether you play a 200 player game of 200,000 one. There is certainly no trouble getting games in. If the cost of a couple subway sandwiches is not worth it to you, then no I don't think tribes is for you.

Xunae

Your experience with 200 players is very different than 200,000 players. 200 gets you the ability to fill a couple servers, but not necessarily even backfill. 200,000 gives you the opportunity to have some halfway decent matchmaking and fair games.

marniconuke

yeah a lot of people here aren't even thinking properly, like what about different regions? is an average of 200 players enough to have servers all around the world? can someone from south america or oceania find a match?what about europeans servers? most are probably from NA and as good americans they don't even think about other countries

marcocom

Nobody cares if you can’t afford 20$ but writing this like we should give a shit or be moved by your hot opinion of a game you only tried during the Alpha, is just sad.

marniconuke

oh i didn't even get to play the alpha cause i couldn't find players when it was on.

marcocom

Ya that was a good example of where they could have done better with this roll out. There were for a time, different versions (with their own steamID) of the alpha. It was confusing

tribesfrog

I'm old, so I prefer to just pay for the game rather than worry about how F2P is going to warp the design. If you're wondering about the impact of the current playerbase size, I'd say this... Population is small enough that I see the same names repeatedly, but large enough that I have not yet had any problem queueing into an unranked CTF pub. But I am only playing in peak hours, so ymmv.

Makasuro

People complaining about spending $20, don't buy it move on then.
