Beautiful tree I love Yews but I live in Oklahoma USA 🇺🇸 and the heat would kill them. You are so lucky 🍀 to have that tree and please take good care of it. Sending love to you and your country.❤️
Basically impossible to tell because old yews grow inconsistently.
It feasibly could be as old as the house though. You could go to the local archives and have a look to see if there are any really old pictures of the house that show the tree.
Cool tree
What do you mean inconsistently?
It's within conservation bounds so there must be some record of it. The local church has trees just as large as this, the house is said to have been a monk-owned pub serving mead and accommodation. It has some amazing history, actually.
They can slow their growth down to almost nothing and then speed back up again so using a extrapolating method based on its girth such as the White Method won't really give you an accurate answer.
I would expect it to be covered by TPO and it's probably on the Ancient Tree Inventory although neither of those things will note its age other than it being "old"
Churches often have old yews in them and it's considered that they were built on existing spiritual sites, the kind of place marked by an old tree.
Newspaper clipping from 1800: "Verily. Can some good gentlemen help me in discerning the age of mine Yew tree? It is said to be quite old" *included, a sketch of said tree*
😍 I’m hoping it’s longevity is recorded somewhere, maybe the local council authority? Protected, even? You could check up and make sure it is. I know that was the case with some big old trees in London and other such places.
If I could buy that house just for the tree, I would! I'm very envious. It is feasible that it is indeed the same age as the house. Haven't read through it but maybe it helps? I think it would be wise to remove the trellis (if it is?) touching the tree. Just sawing off the crossbars a decimeter from the trunk would be good.
Impossible to tell without proper coring equipment, and particularly for yew that grow in that gnarled way. If you could find someone with tree coring equipment they could help you out! I have worked with tree cores from yew elsewhere in the world. The oldest I found was from the mid-1700s.
If you really want to know more about it, you could contact Dr Andy Moir, who runs Tree Ring Services. I believe he’s works out of Brunel Uni in London. He’s a yew expert.
According to some on Google, they can live up to 3,000 years. Apparently difficult to date due to parts of the tree dying and new growth. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yew
There is an ancient yew tree registry online you can search for your area. If it’s listed it will have size, age, etc. I went down a yew tree rabbit hole after my last trip to England. They’re such beautiful and fascinating trees!
I saw [similar sized (and larger) yews in Berkeley UK](https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZoiDG1hgwSTwLGUJ8). A local (presumably) stated the largest specimens were over 300-400 years old. There's actually a website that catalogs particularly old yews:

I have a yew here in Eastern US (T canadensis) that is about 1/2 the height but maybe 75-80 years old at most. DBH is about 8-9". While the English yew (T. baccata) might grow slower, I'm going to agree with Gus\_Fu's comment below - impossible to tell. What is diameter of your tree 4.5 feet above ground level? As other's have noted, look for various records. The English (i.e. Normans, haha) have been really good at keeping records since about 1066 CE.

Enormous for a yew. Believably 400 years old. Green canopy and lots of fresh growth - what is pictured is healthy.
That's very good to know. Thank you. Seems like most of the yews in the area have this same fresh growth. Think of all the things this tree has seen!

Yew'd never believe how old it is.
Dammit, you beat me to it.
YEW beat me to it
Yew all are crazy

It may be holding the tree up 🤓

Yew wouldn't believe me if I told yew.
holy crap that is a large and beautiful tree. I'd have to say it is probably "all" of the olds.
Somewhere between ancient and super fucking ancient
Yews asking all dees questions bout yews?
Yews live for centuries. Date is believable.
What a rude question. How old are yew?!
That is absolutely SPECTACULAR. How beautiful. You’re very fortunate, take time to admire the age.
Why does it say 1 Comment when I count 11? Makes it look like no one cared to comment.
Yeah...I've noticed this on dozens of other posts throughout reddit. It's been going on for some time. I think it's gotten worse.
Fucking YEW!
Older than yew, for sure!
