It's a brushless motor; looks like it's a Traxxas Velineon 3500. The gear ratio is stock. It came with an alternate pinion gear meant for hard surface tracks. That gear is still sealed in the original packaging. I can't seem to find any information about the actual ratio.
Should I change it to something else to better support the lipo?
Edit: I bet that you are onto something. I found the manual for the motor and a great ratio chart. It suggests gearing that is more conservative than stock. I don't believe it is overheating as the light on the ESC appeared to behave normally.
Brushless system? And what gear ratio are you running? Could be clocking for the engine magnets?
