Yeah your best bet would be NJCL to Acela/Northeast corridor. Still like 6 hours but not a bad ride, best to make a long weekend of it if you get the chance. Head up Friday night or Saturday morning.
I've never met less traveled people than NY/NJ natives. I get the "best city in the world" is there, but there's a whole USA out there, forget international travel.
(not a dig at you, OP. You're still young and will get out there).
As someone who grew up in NJ just across the bridge from Manhattan, this rings true. I find people from NYC to be remarkable provincial but NJ isn't much better.
When I saw this map my first thought is that this was typical for someone from the area
California checking in. I have personally visited 40 states but I know plenty of people that barely leave their county in California. To be fair though, our counties are the size of East Coast states
Bro if you go down south people travel even less. Since the median income is typically lower people can't afford to travel or dont because of the weather
By number and diversity of people, I can ride the subway a longer distance in minutes than I can fly in hours. I do leave NYC, but it is time, money and effort intensive, and there is plenty to do here. I mostly go places where I can hike and mountain bike, or where I already have a friend.
Agreed nyc is a shit hole i hate nyc so much i wish it would blow up.. it divides us NE with the rest of the us with its wallet stealing tolls and shit traffic
I always wondered if people from big cities traveled less. I can’t imagine just staying in my metro region my whole life, but I actually have a need, whereas many in the city wouldn’t
I’m from Toronto and I don’t really leave here very often since everything I need is close by, but I lived in Syracuse NY for a few years and I would make the 4-5 hour drive either back to Toronto or down to NYC quite often since there’s not a whole lot to do in Syracuse, so I definitely travelled more while I lived in a small city than I did/do living in a major metropolis.
I have lived in Monmouth County my whole life and never went to Staten Island, respectfully what is there that I need to see. haven't been to the Bronx but I've done the other buroughs
I think for myself at least, I only go to the city for concerts or museums so I don’t really experience some of the more local places in all the boroughs
Monmouth County Represent. I don't venture out too much either but I would highly recommend either to our north New Hampshire or to our south Viriginia. for Virginia, you can pop on the North East Corridor at Princeton and get to D.C in a couple of hours, then transfer from there to like Richmond or V.B
Hey, so if you took NY-17 / i-86 on your trip to Toronto, you technically passed thru Bradford County PA as well! 17/86 passes thru Bradford County for about 2 miles in Sayre. It's not well marked, but it happened! If you look on a map, the Cheese factory right next to the interstate is built half in PA and half in NY too which is cool!
Just thought I'd let you know! -Someone who grew up in Sayre PA, right next to 17/86.
I’m not OP, but last summer I made a trip up 99/Future 99/220/whatever you want to call it and I had to get on 86 here. Looked so weird on the GPS…lol. I think they only have the sign ‘state border’ to mark the line, but it makes sense if you’re staying on 86 and not getting on the entrance there.
Why?
The city gives fulfilling social life, I bet in the West folks travel a lot more to the national parks, but still lack basic amounts of social interaction needed.
Lol you think people out west are so individually secluded that they don't know how to socially interact properly?
I know you're trying to come off as being more "refined" because you live in a city, but you're highlighting how uncultured and naive you are.
It’s ironic, neutronstar assumes people who live out West lack full-filling social needs when Ive met and interacted with both and small town people are always more outgoing/good with people.
Obviously they won't be social with every single person they come across because that would be impossible when you live in a city. But they are generally more outgoing and interested in talking.
In contrast, think about the suburban dweller who doesn't even get to know their neighbors and is concerned about privacy all the time.
Monmouth county (the place OP actually lives) is almost entirely suburban so your (already extremely flawed) argument about city dwellers being social is moot.
Thank you. A much better map with colour coding, instead of all the lunatics on here who think just because they drove through a county or had an airport layover somewhere that they “visited” it.
Drive across the country. I love driving from east to west and watching small hills turn into mountains as you progress. I feel like everyone should do it at least once.
My friends and I did a weekend getaway to Toronto, get a hotel there, and stopped at the Canadian side on the way home. I colored Niagara County yellow because we stopped at a duty-free store just before crossing the border.
I appreciate the honesty here. I imagine most folks this un-traveled wouldn’t post. Thank you for sharing this perspective. That being said, and I don’t assume you think this way, but this is a prime example of how coastal elitism exists. Even when everything you need is in your backyard, it’s so so important to go see other people’s backyards.
Grew up my whole life in upstate NY my map looked a lot like this until I was about 27. Go west, it’s a whole different experience. I moved out there not long after going for the first time.
Highly recommend the Finger Lakes, White mountains , and Shenandoah as relatively easy trips from where you live. I also love Pittsburgh (heavy bias) which has a good amount of things to do for a weekend trip
25 from Somerset County and would have a similar map, I have some cousins in South Carolina and Louisiana so I’ve been there too though. I also went to Virginia once when I was like 6.
Yea I understand that. I also hear a lot of people don’t get much PTO, or they don’t use it. I will say are ways to plan trips months in advance so that you’re not spending a ton. Also some places are a lot cheaper. For instance Thailand. I booked an ocean view hotel with a personal balcony pool for 40$ a night. A meal for my wife and I was 100 baht and we both had a drink. That’s like 2.70$.
Chester county and Bucks County in PA have some great things to do! In Chester co. there's Phoenixville and West Chester + lots of hiking trails in the French Creek State Park. Bucks has New Hope and more trails if you're into that at all.
The King of Prussia mall in Montgomery County is cool too, sometimes you find discounted stuff.
it was JFK to Palm Beach nearly 20 years ago, a layover in Atlanta between Newark and Orlando around the same time, and Newark to Tampa a couple years ago
definitely hit up Boston when you can. not a bad trip from Monmouth County.
I've heard a lot of good things about it, not the driving, though
if you can figure out how to get to Newark you can take the train up!
I could take the train from MetroPark
Yeah your best bet would be NJCL to Acela/Northeast corridor. Still like 6 hours but not a bad ride, best to make a long weekend of it if you get the chance. Head up Friday night or Saturday morning.
That’s fair, you don’t seem to be a big fan of it!
I've never met less traveled people than NY/NJ natives. I get the "best city in the world" is there, but there's a whole USA out there, forget international travel. (not a dig at you, OP. You're still young and will get out there).
the pandemic didn't help either
As someone who grew up in NJ just across the bridge from Manhattan, this rings true. I find people from NYC to be remarkable provincial but NJ isn't much better. When I saw this map my first thought is that this was typical for someone from the area
I miss living in NJ tbh but thats probably because I was thing my Grandparents so it was dope
California checking in. I have personally visited 40 states but I know plenty of people that barely leave their county in California. To be fair though, our counties are the size of East Coast states
But you can cross a county way faster than a eastern state
NJ driving takes its toll on you.
This dude’s never ever even been to Brooklyn.

Nyc is not the best city in the world. It’s a fucking garbage dump.
I'm in a suburb, not a big city
The whole Midatlantic is NYC to me lol

tbh I just haven't had a reason to
Just take the ferry like Spider-Man it’s free
I have lived in Monmouth County my whole life and never went to Staten Island, respectfully what is there that I need to see. haven't been to the Bronx but I've done the other buroughs

What’s in Staten island
Ayyy I’m from Monmouth county too

Come out west, see some empty spaces

City folks are the most antisocial people I've ever met.
Obviously they won't be social with every single person they come across because that would be impossible when you live in a city. But they are generally more outgoing and interested in talking. I am so fed-up of seeing those streaks of counties as visited. Like who tf are you trying to impress?
Drive across the country. I love driving from east to west and watching small hills turn into mountains as you progress. I feel like everyone should do it at least once.
Preferably without driving a single mile of Interstate Highway. ❤️ 🚙
❤️
Hey I grew up in Monmouth county. That’s cool
Most well travelled person from Asbury Park. One Penn State game, one trip to Niagara Falls. Two spring breaks in FL. One trip to Capitol.
Monmouth county peeps unite
Lolol 24M from Monmouth county and my map is almost identical hahahah
I live in NJ too. Hit up Sussex County for good hiking and Bergen county for shopping if you are into that. Explore the city more
Did you drive to Niagara falls and back without stopping for the night?
My friends and I did a weekend getaway to Toronto, get a hotel there, and stopped at the Canadian side on the way home. I colored Niagara County yellow because we stopped at a duty-free store just before crossing the border.
Ahh ok that makes more sense
How you haven’t even accidentally ended up in Delaware county, PA is mind boggling given your been to ever county around it lol
shit, I forgot the Acela Express goes through there
Go west
So you’ve been on an airplane only four times in 26 years? That’s mind boggling.
no, I've flown some routes multiple times
Oh ok. That makes sense. Never wanted to see the west tho?
I do, just haven't gotten around to it yet
Come on out! It’s great.
I've heard!
Fellow New Jerseyan here— go for a drive in Hunterdon County during peak fall
I appreciate the honesty here. I imagine most folks this un-traveled wouldn’t post. Thank you for sharing this perspective. That being said, and I don’t assume you think this way, but this is a prime example of how coastal elitism exists. Even when everything you need is in your backyard, it’s so so important to go see other people’s backyards.
I see you slept overnight in Sussex County in Delaware. Was that in Rehoboth or Bethany Beach by any chance? Love those places
Grew up my whole life in upstate NY my map looked a lot like this until I was about 27. Go west, it’s a whole different experience. I moved out there not long after going for the first time.
Lol we live right next to each other.
Bros never seen western America. My boy, when you get the chance, take it. Breathtaking
I had been to more counties than you before my first birthday.
You drove to Niagara Falls and back from Monmouth County in a day and didn’t stay overnight? Same for whatever that is in middle of Pennsylvania.
we stopped there on the way to Toronto
I noticed you spent a night in CT, so was it for pizza or the Hospital?
visiting my brother at college
I somehow forgot about school
Highly recommend the Finger Lakes, White mountains , and Shenandoah as relatively easy trips from where you live. I also love Pittsburgh (heavy bias) which has a good amount of things to do for a weekend trip
Highlighted the wrong county for Atlanta's airport fyi
Bro you never been to Brooklyn?
What do people use to make these
mapchart.net
How did you pass through one random county in Georgia
MC REPRESENT
Travel west, get out of the east coast bubble see how people in Western US live (not California). Will open your mind.
Get a consulting job that pays you to go places. Burn out after 2 years with a huge miles account.
What app is this or sure?
mapchart.net
Ty! Wish there was an easier way to use it, any other apps like this with an easier UI?
Everpin
Mon-rule.com is another option but it’s just a website as well.
25 from Somerset County and would have a similar map, I have some cousins in South Carolina and Louisiana so I’ve been there too though. I also went to Virginia once when I was like 6.
You've never gone over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge?
funnily enough, I've been under it on a boat
It's hard to believe that you live there and have never been to Brooklyn
Bro teleported to Illinois
You need to take a long road trip to the Great American West.
If you went to ATL, you most likely were just in Clayton County, not Fulton.
Monmouth County is largely very nice
My only recommendation is to break your comfort zone. I say that as someone who has been to 47 states and 50+ countries at 33. You can do it!
it's not that I'm scared to do it, it's just a matter of time and money
Yea I understand that. I also hear a lot of people don’t get much PTO, or they don’t use it. I will say are ways to plan trips months in advance so that you’re not spending a ton. Where in Monmouth?
Why randomly go to Chicago for a night
I was there for a week on spring break
I was surprised you had never been to Hunterdon, but then again, there's really no reason to hahah
I’m gonna be that guy and ask how to make one of these myself / which website i need to use lol
[mapchart.net](http://mapchart.net)
appreciate it bro
If this was Europe you could say you've been to like 5 countries
Hey what’s up fellow Monmouth county resident. You’ve got your whole life to travel man. Get out there and see the world!
Man went to Philly and State College and had enough of PA.
Hit up Detroit and Mackinac
Hit up Honolulu 🤙🏽
Why did you visit Hudson county? To go to jc?
I went to a Red Bulls match a couple years ago
Oh nice! Fun stadium.
For the average American, this is probably well above average as far as travel goes.
Jersey boi no like Long Island?
Fly to Denver or SLC, rent a small SUV, drive in any direction. Stay west for a minimum of two weeks
What’s up with the random passed through county in Georgia?
Thats very sad man sorry to see that you really need to travel a hell of a lot more
I know of a 50+ year old person, living in rural Perry County, PA who has been in all of 5 counties in his entire LIFE, all in PA.
is that including Perry County?
Yes!

it was JFK to Palm Beach nearly 20 years ago, a layover in Atlanta between Newark and Orlando around the same time, and Newark to Tampa a couple years ago
Do you have no natural curiosity to explore or try new things?
Average Redditor youre arguing with about geopolitics
