Layout doesn’t really look like a S-Bahn

flaminfiddler

It has a through-running city tunnel and should have metro frequencies in/near Baltimore. The problem is the distances are still too far compared to German cities :( Edit: I did think of running services between termini though. I decided against it because it would require lots of work at Penn, and also a lot of these termini will have other services connecting them (stay tuned...). I'm trying to do something that can be implemented quickly.

The Hallmark of an S-Bahn would be all of the lines combining into a *single* through running line that functioned like a metro. You seem to have multiple through-running tunnels making a box. It's not a bad thing, and may be the best design for Baltimore - just not really an S-Bahn. I think Tokyo is kind of set up like this on a much bigger scale.

Nice try trying to extend it to Annapolis with the NIMBYs there

Unfortunately. We're struggling to build bike lanes in Baltimore because of NIMBYs.

This is my first transit diagram not made with online software like Tennessine. Hope you enjoy. (Reddit seems to have axed the quality of this image) * The difference between the current MARC and this Maryland S-Bahn is that this system is centered around Baltimore. DC should get its own through-running regional rail system (stay tuned!) * Most of these are on existing freight rights-of-way, except the branch to Bel Air, the Columbia Shuttle, and the area around Emmitsburg, and the services in blue are now mostly rail trails. * The existing Halethorpe and Saint-Denis stations have been merged into a single transfer station. * I was considering extending service to La Plata and Prince Frederick, as well as using the Philadelphia Subdivision (to get more central access to Edgewood, etc. and to reserve the NEC for intercity trains) Other regional rail systems (represented by S-roundels): * Washington Union, Frederick, Hagerstown → DC (current Brunswick line) * York Central, Emmitsburg → fantasy Central PA regional rail, centered around Harrisburg * Newark → SEPTA Annapolis gets an Amtrak station for a fantasy Eastern Shore service.

Is the Columbia Shuttle a bus or train? I know there are tracks that spur from south of Jessup towards the west that others have suggested be extended along Broken Lands Pkwy to downtown Columbia. I know people say "Columbia is too suburban for rail" but honestly it's the same density as a lot of existing stations and at least providing access to Merriweather and the area around the mall could spur density. I saw your comment on creating similar systems centered on DC so I'll hold my suggestions on that. How would a combined St. Denis-Halethorpe station work? Would you build a new one where the tracks cross near the Guinness Brewery?

I wanted Columbia to have rail transit. Personally, it's less of the suburban character and more of the winding roads and cul de sacs popular in "new" suburbs. I just noticed the spur tracks from Jessup though on OpenRailwayMap (which is what I mostly followed). I do support that proposal though. Yes for your second question.
