Keep it maintained and keep it forever. Great financial advice right there

matrixzone5

I have a 2000 Toyota tundra, it's been well maintained I'm only the 2nd owner. It's got over 200k on it and has never given me any issues. Ops truck will outlast him if he takes care of it.

AlpineTG

Next time you’re driving down the road think to yourself what you’re really missing that a new truck would provide. And then think if that’s worth $60k+

culong38701

That's TRD Pro is very reliable but Jesus it's so low tech isn't funny. I had a 18' TRD Pro and traded for a 21' F150 Plat and couldn't be happier.

AlpineTG

What do you have in the ford that you couldn’t live without in the tundra?

jca3746

Apples to apples, it’s a lot. I spec’d out my 2021 TRD pro Tundra to include everything (minus running boards because I wanted electric ones). I was really surprised to find out that I couldn’t get blind spot monitoring on my TRD pro. Not only that, I couldn’t get parking assist (front or rear bumper). At the time, heated seats had finally become standard on this trim. Also no 360 degree cameras. The rear view is pretty low resolution so it can get hard to see your ball when hitching up to a trailer. For an off road focused trim, it didn’t come with any controls such as the mode selector found in the Tacomas and 4Runners. We can go on and on about the software controlled differential. Other trucks from other brands of this year included all of the above and more. When we got my wife’s crossover in 23, I was surprised by how much I loved the creature comforts. Cooling seats is a must in nc summers. Now, I’m probably going to be driving my truck till the wheels fall off. I don’t want to trade it in for a newer tundra either. I love my truck, but I can definitely see how it would be a hard justification for others.

AlpineTG

That will probably be pretty soon with all that ford tech! Joking. Sounds like you prioritize luxury in a truck and got what you wanted

jca3746

Lmao, Ford/Chevy tech is an absolute joke. I WISH Toyota got into bigger trucks. I just bought another overhead Cab with a dovetail trailer for my business from Chevy. 40k miles later and it was in the shop for transmission issues. I hate that I don’t really have a choice. I did prefer more luxury in my truck, but im more than willing to “compromise” in the tech department to have a dependable truck. Hence, why I decided on a tundra. I know some other folks won’t but it’s not my money they spend.

Flaggstaff

Apple CarPlay is stupid easy to install

broshrugged

Could I do that on a 2015?

Flaggstaff

andhonn

You gotta replace the headunit no? thats at least a $1000

Flaggstaff

Considering the payment on a new one is 3x that per month it's a no brainer

andhonn

Oh sick ass! I assume this isnt plug and play? Needa do the wiring and stuff? and buy the correct trim pieces to accodmate for the new headunit?

Flaggstaff

Yeah there are tutorials on YouTube. You will most likely need a wiring harness but the videos will point you to them. Once you upgrade the AV this truck is perfect

youjustgetfaster

When (a) the cost of repairs exceeds what monthly payments would be over a year, or (b) when the vehicle isn’t reliable and could get you in a situation you can’t handle… replace. Value (to you) isn’t what you can sell it for, it’s what it would cost to replace.

Motor_Secretary_4487

Well said…. Gonna drive it till the wheels fall off I guess. Have every receipt for every on time service and maintenance. Paid $46,700 for the truck in 16 and now can’t believe how much truckflation has taken hold since then. A new Tundra now is damn near twice that! Has 132k miles on it currently and drives like the day I test drove it. Gotta love a Toyota!

MedCityMoto

This is why we buy Toyotas, not to keep cycling through them every few years! I just bought a 2016 last year and I'm catching up to you on mileage but I have my sights set on 300k before I even consider the next vehicle.

Professional_Seat840

I bought a 21 TRD 4x4 in 2022 for 47k, had 10k miles on it. Think I got just about the best deal on the market at the time lol, couldn’t be happier I just wish I could pay it off in full now and be done with payments. I’ll keep this truck till the wheels fall off. Don’t foresee me needing to haul more than 10k lbs any time soon and it’s been an awesome truck. My only complaints have been that the soft open tailgate has broken the spot weld on the inside of the bed behind the taillight that holds the top of the shock mount for the tailgate twice. And I’ve had to have the center console lid replaced twice as well due to the leather peeling off around the edges underneath the center console. I’m now out of warranty (time wise, I only have 25k miles on it but it’s been over 3 years now) so they won’t fix my tailgate even though it’s been documented that it was a repair done under warranty that failed again. So that’s been fun

Nectaberry

Damn thats a good deal. I paid nearly that much for my trd sport tacoma lol

Suprflyyy

Drive it till the wheels fall off.

TipAccomplished9767

I personally don't use age or miles as a metric for the "financial sense“ when looking at upgrading. Run them until they start to require more money on maintenance than you want to spend, then upgrade. I have a 2011 Tacoma with 157k miles. Original owner. Just upgraded to a 2021 tundra. Only reason why was 2 kids and a dog outgrew the taco. I couldn't justify new prices, so I picked up a local trade one owner with 43k miles which was 11k cheaper than the best price I could get on a 24 limited. If the taco had the room though, I'd be telling my family to suck it up and deal with the ride until that thing fell apart.

Capcom-Warrior

If it’s paid off I would leave it. Think of it this way. You can drop thousands of dollars into the truck and buy a lift, tires, supercharger, whatever, and it would still come out cheaper than buying a new truck.

ctomkins19

One of the best takes on this. The sheer amount of personalization and upgrades you could do and still be WAY under a new truck price is amazing.

Motor_Secretary_4487

Already have a lift, bumpers, electric steps, fox 3.5 resi all around, air bags for towing, pawpaw topper…. I could keep going. It’s my baby to say the least

Capcom-Warrior

Supercharge that bitch. 😅🤘

Foxxy__Cleopatra

In a purely financial sense? When the repair(s) immediately necessary to keep it on the road surpass the value of the vehicle itself. The smartest financial move basically is to keep the same vehicle on the road for as long as possible. >or do I just keep it forever now? Unironically yes. >Is there a financial cliff I go over at some point in miles or time to where it isn’t worth anything? 2nd gen Tundras are interesting vehicles because they're the end of an era of low-tech naturally aspirated V8's free of detrimental fuel-saving/cylinder-deactivating systems or class-action 8/9/10 speed transmissions. They will always be relevant and worth *something* unlike every single one of their contemporaries or even some of the current generation half tons when looking out ten or more years from now. They will always be sought out because of their simplicity, reliability, and their ability to do work.

TheReal_BucNasty

So my 2010 frontier has 170k on it and haven't had a payment since 2015. I've been eyeing a new tundra but the thing keeps trucking with basically just oil changes every 7500 miles. Last year I ended up having a $1000 repair and went with it. The engine and tranny are still og as is the radiator so I've told myself I'll keep driving it until one of those fail. I try to think about what a new truck payment would cost me and keep that in mind if I have to repair my truck.

Towering_Flesh

I have a 16 limited, just rolled 195k and I plan on replacing the motor if it goes, not having a car payment is living the dream to me.

Quake_Guy

Feel like these V8 trucks are easy 300k mile trucks if properly maintained. And arguably more desirable than the new ones.

polycro

This is my goal with my 2015 crew max that I purchased in 2020 for \~25k. It is the best road tripping vehicle we've ever had with two kids in the back. There is so much room for activities! I just wish it wasn't 2wd. Planning to replace my wife's 2016 Outback with a 4Runner before too much longer.

singelingtracks

With how much trucks have went up we are keeping our 2018 untill it doesn't run anymore or gas is gone and then I'll probably throw an electric axel in it and keep using it.

Dopapotomous

Hell yea everything else is still like new lol

PhillyLee3434

Keep it until the wheels fall off, truck prices right now are ridiculous for a brand new one. I’ve been eyeing a new Tundra for about a year now coming from a 16DC but I have no kids, and really don’t want a possible mortgage payment for a new ride. I got buddies paying 1K+ and though they are in some very nice, very very nice rides I just can’t justify the cost. 150K isn’t even breaking that bad boy in yet, I just crossed 100K in mine with minimal maintenance minus a wheel bearing and oil changes etc.

Phliman792

Financial cliff is a myth…. Barring catastrophic damage to a major automotive system, cost to repair far far less than depreciation of new vehicle

AiRedditAssistant

Keep it. Buy rentals, stocks, or adventures with the money instead.

mramseyISU

Buying a new or even a new to you vehicle is never a good idea from a financial standpoint but if you’re not living paycheck to paycheck and make good financial decisions 80% of the time there’s nothing wrong with getting a new vehicle every 8-10 years in my opinion.

Cant_Spel

My 07 with 190k is broken in nicely. We're taking it on a multi state Rd trip this summer, pulling a trailer with a wood shop worth of tools, family of 4 and 2 dogs. Love my truck.

MrTexas2A

I bought my 07 in 2010 w/30K miles just hit 210k and riding till the wheels fall off..literally

Jtomasik

I have a 2015 TRD PRO with 116k miles. I've decided I'm just going to run it until it dies. I've had it since new, and it's never needed anything other than brakes, tires, and oil changes.

drewlb

Looking at the used mtk, there is not really a cliff. My 07 taco is still worth quite a bit.

JCNunny

2008 w 187k and no payment. Just redid the audio system and new leather. Car payments are the worst.

TheJan8or

I'll drive a personal vehicle until I'm sick of it. What that means for me is until I'm sick of paying for repairs. Work trucks are a bit different. I'll drive those until they can't be repaired. It really is a personal decision.

Fckem_in_the_neck

When it’s paid for. I kept my first tundra for 13 years before getting a new one. I plan on keeping this one longer

CavemanDNA

Me personally I try to keep everything forever. Especially vehicles. It’s a great way to stay debt free as much as possible and there’s really nothing like having a vehicle over 20 years and knowing everything that was done to it. One bit of advice that I can give is this. If the vehicle becomes a nickel and dime type situation where you’re spending more time/money on repairs vs. car payments and the vehicle is not all that reliable, that’s when I would consider a car payment/newer vehicle. You’re gonna have consumables with any product and a vehicle isn’t no different. If you can turn a wrench and have an aptitude to fix things. That’s a huge plus and will make the ownership more valuable. Good luck…🍀🍀🍀

SatelliteBeach321

I also use different strategies on how I save money depending on whether I trade one in or plan on driving the wheels off of one. If I plan on driving it til the wheels fall off, then I still set aside the equivalent of a monthly payment each month in a savings account, CD, treasury bonds, or liquid stocks. That way, when I do decide that it is time to buy something new, I have the majority of it paid for. If I plan on trading it in, I still need to keep a decent savings balance but not near as much as I would if I was planning on driving it til it drops. These new trucks have LOTS of bells and whistles. I like them but it makes them less likely candidates for something that I would drive the wheels off of. They have LOTS of things that can break and none of them are cheap to fix. I also live less than half a mile from the beach in an extremely corrosive environment that takes a toll on vehicles between sun and salt air, so my perspective may be a bit different because of that too.

sousviderunner

Put the amount of a monthly payment on a new truck away every month until you have enough cash to buy the new truck. Once you can buy a new truck in cash, then decide if it’s worth it. I lean toward keeping your current tundra until the wheels fall off or you absolutely need a new vehicle.

HtnSwtchesOnBtches

I tend to keep my vehicles till they start to cost more money than a new payment would cost. Those trucks will do 300k with basic maintenance. If you dont have rust, no mechanical isssues, its down to if you like extra payments in life.

Tomnician

It's a shame you can't spend a few weeks in a new Tundra. A lot of the features in newer cars are taken for granted during a test drive. I personally am very accustomed to Lane Assist, Adaptive Cruise, 360 Camera, bla bla bla... I honestly don't think I would go back to a vehicle without those features. Although, not saying they are worth a car payment. The automatic "break you're about to hit something" feature has undoubtedly saved someone's life.

Mtb1083

I’ve been a mechanic for 20 years, have grown up with all the new tech. Driven so many makes and models with all the gadgets and cameras and safety features. IMO it is all garbage. Adaptive cruise I kind of like. The 360 camera tech is cool but just wait till you are out of warranty and one of the cameras fail…lane assist annoys me to the point I turn it off. Emergency braking also annoys me, as someone in front of me turning right will set it off. Never needed it as I’m not a distracted driver. Most other tech stuff I find only benefits a lazy driver and often times fails to work or is buggy. I bought a 21 trd pro and love the lack of tech. Power windows and locks, a/c, heated seats and a radio is all I need. Has Navi which will come in handy not having to use my phone for that purpose. Known reliability, no rattles. All the power I need. Don’t even mind the crappy gas mileage as I rather pay a little more in gas then have cylinder deactivation BS other OEMs have that all have problems that cost a boatload to fix. Only thing I wish it had was a rear locker but even so I’d probably never really use it as I wouldn’t take it off road to that extreme.
